Chapter 19 - Mind Games with Dawn and the Gang
Dawn's POV
I had closed my eyes when I was falling backwards, just so I didn't have too look at what had knocked me back. When I did finally open them back up, I saw the happy face of Parker over me as he sat on top of me.
"Parker?" I asked confused with the situation. "Did you just tackle me?"
He smiled and nodded furiously. "I was just so happy that you're back!"
I laughed at this kid side of him and then tried to push him off. "Alright Parker, I need to get up now though."
He gratefully slid off as soon as I asked, and then helped me up off the ground. We then walked into our room where Lucy and Xavier were laughing.
I rolled my eyes as I walked over to our table and sat down in a chair. " Thanks guys, you're the best," I said sarcastically.
Xavier and Lucy mumbled a half sincere "sorry" after they had stopped laughed. They then took a seat, along with Parker, at the table with me.
"So I'm assuming your nose is fine," Lucy said with a smile.
I nodded. "Yep, no damage done." I replied happily. I glanced over at Parker, luckily he didn't tackle me in a way where my nose got banged up even more.
Xavier smirked at me. "That means we can go have some fun," he said mischievously.
Parker laughed and then clapped his hands together. "This is going to be fun!"
Lucy and I exchanged glances and I knew we were thinking the exact same thing.
"We can't do anything too stupid you guys," Lucy said while directing a serious look toward Parker and Xavier.
They both had smirks on their faces which made me slightly nervous. The mind of a teenage boy could be a very scary thing.
"Don't worry dear Lucy, we won't do something that will get us in trouble." Parker said in an accent of some kind.
"Yes, why don't we start by going on an adventure? We can add on from there," Xavier joined in too with an accent.
"An adventure? Are you serious?" I said in disbelief. They were sounding like they were five years old, not nearly adults in a gang.
"Yes! an adventure!" Parker said while swiping his hands through the air in excitement.
"No on second thought let's not," Xavier added on while glancing to Lucy and Parker. "We all know what happened to Sarah."
Looking between all of them, they had sad and scared looks on their faces. Why? I wasn't quite sure. I didn't know who this Sarah girl was either. By the looks on their faces I chose to ask about her a different time.
"So what are we going to do then?" Parker asked sadly. "I can't come up with anything else."
The room was silent as we were all thinking about something we could do to entertain ourselves for the rest of the afternoon. After awhile Lucy got up and started pacing around the room.
"What if we mess with a few of the other trainees?" she asked after a few minutes of pacing around. She caught all of our attentions and we waited for her to continue on.
She sat back down at the table and shrugged at us. "I'm not sure how we would, but it'd just be a little fun and games? I don't see how we could get in trouble as long as we don't hurt anyone."
I smiled liking the idea as I thought more about it. We could mess with Levi! Maybe even Luke and Landon? We could even mess with Alyson........ I smirked to myself totally sold on the idea.
"I'm up for it!" I said while standing up from the table. "I think it'd be fun."
Xavier and Parker were slowly nodding. I wasn't sure if they were completely sold on the idea like Lucy and I were.
"Oh common guys," Lucy said while standing up with me. "Don't tell me you're too afraid to go say some stuff to mess with the people we've known for two weeks now."
Xavier and Parker looked at each other before turning back to look at Lucy and I. Xavier shrugged and stood up. "I could always go for messing with some people," He said. We all looked at Parker to see what he was going to say.
The normally fun and jumpy guy was calm and serious. "I guess i'll tag along," he said while standing up with us. "But I don't know if I can do anything. I don't like being mean to other people."
We nodded at him with smiles. "It's okay Parker, we aren't going to force you to do it." I said while walking over to the door and opening it."Now let's get this show on the road people!"
I held the door open as they walked out into the hallway. I quickly followed them letting the door close tightly behind me.
Truthfully, I had no idea what was going to happen when we tried to do this.
*********
A few hours later, we had managed to walk to The Crater. Parker had whined about being hungry and convinced us to stop and eat a long lunch before continuing with our previous plan. After Parker had stuffed himself, Xavier led our little group out of the Dining Hall and to the Crater. He and found an empty space in one of the corners of the room and led us over there so we could stop and figure out how this would work.
People around us swarmed around like busy worker bees trying to get their job done. We almost looked like we stood out from them because we weren't moving like they were.
"So....... what now?" Parker asked trying to get things moving.
"I don't know," Xavier said while looking over to Lucy and I. "You guys thought of the idea, make up the rules."
I looked at Lucy and she shrugged at me. "Go for it Dawn, you motivated us all to come and do this," She said handing me control over our whole little operation.
Great.
I sighed as I looked around at the people passing by us. How was this going to work? I thought about the games everyone used to play back when we were in high school. They'd be perfect to mix together right?
"Okay, I got it!" I quietly exclaimed to them. "I have a feeling you guys are going to like this game," I said catching their attention.
Lucy laughed at me. "Okay now i'm excited not going to lie."
I smiled at her, "Good."
"so what are the rules," Xavier asked curiously. "I hope they aren't dumb."
I rolled my eyes at him. "This is how it's going to work. Since I thought of everything, I get to go first." Asher groaned at me and I shot him a look that shut him up. "I'll pick one of you guys and tell you who you have to go mess with. I'll tell you how you have to mess with them too, it'll kind of be like a challenge."
"Woo! A challenge!" Parker exclaimed, back to his happy self again.
Smiling I laughed at him. "Yes a challenge. Once that person messes with who I said and how I said to do it, they get to pick the next person to go and who they have to mess with and all that good stuff!" I finished explaining a little proud of what I had made up. A simple yet fun game.
"Sounds great to me!" Lucy said excitedly. "But what are some rules so this doesn't get crazy?"
I thought about it, and to mess with people the right way they couldn't know it was a game that we were playing.
"Rule number one is that you can't tell the person your messing with that you're playing a game." I said knowing that Xavier would probably be the one to do it so he wouldn't mess up his status with the other trainees.
Xavier rolled his eyes. "Rule number two can be that the other people watching have to stay far enough away so they're out of sight. And that they can't interfere to make it funnier or to mess it up," He said in annoyance.
"Sounds fair enough to me," Lucy commented. "Anything else to add to the rules?"
We all shrugged not able to think of anything. It was a fairly simple game already.
"Alright Dawn," Parker said piping in. "Who're you going to pick?"
They all looked at me nervously not wanting to be the one that had to first. I started laughing at them and they all looked a little less nervous. Thinking about the initial reason I was all aboard with this Idea, I smiled knowing exactly who I was going to pick.
"Okay..... Xavier is the lucky chosen one!" I exclaimed with a laugh. He groaned again and Parker and Lucy started laughing.
"Fine, let's just get this over with," Xavier said seemingly annoyed. "Who and how Dawn, who and how."
I pretended to think a minute, as if I didn't already know his target. "Alyson," I said with a smirk after a moment. "You have to tell her the lamest jokes you know to see if she starts flirting and falling more in love with you," I said sarcastically with a laugh at the end.
He gave me a look as if he knew I was up to something. "Why her and why that?"
Chuckling I smirked back at him. "Because she obviously has a thing for you, and it's going to be funny watching you mess with her head." I said happily.
"YES! Thank you Dawn," Lucy said joining in. "It's going to be so funny Xavier, I promise."
He rolled his eyes. "I really don't think she has a thing for me you guys," he said right before Parker started breaking out in hysterical laughter.
We all gave Parker a confused look.
"You think she doesn't have a thing for you," Parker laughed almost crying. "Then why did you go with her into that closet right after...."
"OKAY!" Xavier yelled over Parker to block out what he was saying. Lucy and I exchanged a knowing look with a smirk before looking back at Xavier who had started turning red.
"Fine, maybe she does have a thing for me," Xavier admitted. "Whatever, fine I guess I'll do it to her."
"Do what to who?" Sounded a deep voice from behind us.
Startling all of us, we jumped around to see the one and only Kaiden standing behind us with his arms crossed over his chest as is he was scolding like little kids.
"What are you four up to?" He asked us again, waiting for someone to speak.
Lucy, Parker and Xavier all looked petrified that their leader was in front of them. My eyes realized that this was probably the first time that he had ever spoken to them directly.
"We were just trying to entertain ourselves sir," I said deciding that I was the only one that would be able to speak to him. "Mess around with the other trainees a little bit."
He turned to me and raised his brow. I figured he was probably thinking it was a horrible idea and i'm sure Lucy, Parker and Xavier were scared that we would get in trouble.
"Nothing dangerous or harmful of course," I added, seeing still that none of the other would try speaking to him. "Just confusing them or saying a few weird things."
Kaiden nodded at me and then glanced around at the others who were still staring at him like they had seen a ghost. I could see they were afraid to make eye contact with him but knew they were supposed to.
I know I was scared to look him in the eye the first day I arrived here. Those icy blue eyes sent shivers down your spine.
"Did you uh...... need something from us sir?" Xavier asked managing to man up a bit.
Kaiden stared him in the eye for a few moments and you could see that confidence drain a little. I could see that in the corner of Kaiden's eyes there were flickers of amusement. I slowly came to the realization.
He was messing with all of them. Making himself seem more scary and intimidating , even more powerful. I smiled to myself a little knowing I figured out his game.
Kaiden then nodded and looked at me. "I need to talk to Dawn," he said cooly.
I was a little surprised that he had anything to say to me. After earlier I figured he'd be mad at me for some unknown reason and avoid coming into contact with me for a few days.
Lucy, Parker and Xavier seemed surprised too. Xavier the most surprised of them. His eyebrows had raised almost all the way up to his hairline.
Kaiden glanced at them and they all tried to go back to having neutral faces. "Make sure you three stay out of trouble."
They all nodded vigorously until they realized they had to speak to their higher ranks. "Yes sir!" they all chimed in together.
Kaiden nodded at them before looking at me again. "Come with me Dawn," He commanded as he started walking towards the stairs on the opposite side of the room.
Before I left to follow him I turned to Lucy. "Make sure he still does his challenge," I quickly whispered to her.
She nodded at me with a smile, "I'll tell you all about it later."
I smiled appreciatively and turned around and jogged to catch back up with Kaiden so I didn't loose him in the crowd.
How I would loose him is a wonder though.
I thought people made a big gap for Jake to walk through when he led me down to my dorm for the first time. Well when Kaiden walked through, it was like he was parting the red sea. Nobody, and I mean nobody walked in front of him and then cut back in right behind him. They made a clear path for him and I was even able to follow right behind him. The weirdest part?
It was completely normal.
Nobody slowed down to make this pathway happen, no one even looked at him for longer than a glance. Not even Me for the matter. Everyone continued rushing around at the same pace while trying to get to wherever they were going.
Having power was a real mystery to me.
We started ascending the stairs and Kaiden slowed down so I could keep up with him easily. Flight by flight we trudged up to his office at the very top.
As we entered the hallway leading to his office, I noticed Corvo wasn't standing there.
"Where's Corvo?" I asked Kaiden curiously.
As we walked up each flight of stairs, he had relaxed more and more as we put more stories between us and the people below us.
"I dismissed him for a late lunch," Kaiden said simply. "He works too hard."
I nodded in silent agreement as Kaiden walked into his office. Before I stepped inside myself I realized that the nearest person other than Kaiden was several stories below me. I didn't know if Kaiden was still mad from earlier, or what he even had to talk to me about.
To be truthful, It scared me a little.
