Chapter 55: Moving On

Ya'll this book is ending soon have fun with that info. I'll start publishing a new book right after this one (I have four divergent book drafts on the ready) Maybe one more chapter. And an epilogue

The next few months are painfully slow, but I manage to get through every day of physical therapy and pain. Tobias and the others don't have to help me do near as many things, and I'm finally willing to use the chair lift. I'm even excited because today I can get fitted for my prosthetic leg.

I don't think that it will ever quite register that I'm missing most of a leg, but then again, it's only been a few months. We aren't stranded in the woods anymore, I have the love of my life, and my family is growing. Susan is due in 3 months, and we are all beyond excited. Mom, Susan, Christina and I have been shopping for the nursery.

Oh, did I mention we are moving into a new house? Everybody on that plane was liable to sue the company, because the crash was their fault. They didn't do proper checks of the plane beforehand. So, Tobias and I together got... a lot of money, the amount of which you'll have to guess. We put it together so he doesn't have to move into the apartment, and we bought a six bedroom home, equipped with many assets, and still have a lot of money left over.

The nursery is one of the bigger rooms, my mom gets her own room, Susan and Caleb get a room, Tobias and I have separate rooms, and we have a guest bedroom. We have plenty of room for our quirky little family and everything is finally coming together.

"BumbleBea!" Tobias shouts up the stairs. I grab the crutches from beside the bed, and stick my phone in my sweatshirt pocket, "Coming!" I make my way to the stair lift, past the dozens of packed boxes, and hop on. It's slow, but it functions. I straighten out my hair as I get down. I technically have had a prosthesis before, but it want more of a temporary fix and it didn't work very well, with where my leg is amputated.

"Are you ready? After practicing, you are finally getting your permanent prosthetic!" Tobias seems so joyous about all of this.

He is right about practicing, I've been going in to try out different kinds legs and trying to walk on them. I found one I like, but now it's a matter of trying to get used to walking on something that's not attached to my body. It sucks that my situation was so different. Instead of getting a temporary prosthetic at two or three weeks, I was still recovering from infection and other issues. So I never got to try one out. Now I'm stuck with transitioning straight to the new one.

Tobias picks me up off the chair, and I laugh while trying to grasp at my crutches. He grabs them with one hand while still holding me up. "Bea, Tobias, come on! We are going to be late!" Mom shouts from the garage. Tobias grabs my purse for me and runs us out to the car. Mom shakes her head, laughing as he nearly tosses me into the backseat.

"Today's the big day!" I exclaim, noticing how my demeanor is getting happier each moment realization hits me.

It isn't far too the doctors office, and the trip is familiar at these point. I am wearing spandex and Tobias's sweatshirt, so when I stand it looks like I'm not wearing any pants. Mom, Tobias and I make our way to the front of the hospital, and go up three floors to where my doctor is. When we finally get back into a room, anticipation is building.

"I can't believe all of this! I've been struggling so much, but now I will finally feel normal!" I exclaim, giddy.

Tobias let's me sit on his lap, so he puts his arms around my waist and nuzzles his head into the crook of my neck, "You were perfect before and you're perfect now."

I smile, giving him a kiss on the cheek, "Ditto, love."

Dr. Olsen knocks on the door, then walks in. He smirks at me on top of Tobias, "I see you've been feeling better?" Mom shoots him a look, making us all laugh at her overprotective nature.

He shakes each of our hands, before beginning to analyze the clipboard in front of him. "I see that you've been recovering amazing. Your infection is finally completely gone, not even a trace. I am very glad that today you are able to get your final prosthetic."

I let out a breath of relief, letting go of the tension holding me back, "I'm just so happy, my life is finally getting back to normal."

Dr. Olsen nods, "Are you having any pain today?"

"None." I answer with confidence.

"Any fevers, nausea or vomiting?"

"Only once, after I ate some bad fish sticks."

He let's out a small chuckle, "We'll still keep an eye on that. How are you moving around?"

"Much better," Tobias answers for me, "She's strong on the crutches and doesn't need much help at all anymore. Her abdomen is strong and she can sit up an move around any way she wants to."

Dr. Olsen nods, grinning, "That sounds fantastic, Beatrice! Do you agree with what he says?"

"Absolutely," I nod, "I feel so independent."

After a couple more minutes of discussion, much of which Tobias butts in on, Dr. Olsen leaves, telling us to wait for a nurse. I sigh, leaning back. "I'm so proud of you, baby girl."

"You too are extra cuddly today." Mom remarks, shaking her head.

I hit her leg in a joking manner, "I'm just happy, Mom."

After teasing me, a nurse walks in, "Beatrice Prior?"

I nod, grabbing my crutches to stand up, "That's my name, don't wear it out."

"Come back with me, we are going to get that leg on."
