Chapter 9

It had been a peaceful week, which should have been the first sign that something was going to go wrong. Rule #1 I learned here at camp: Nothing is ever peaceful in the life of a demigod. It had been a normal day of training and bickering. I had stolen another one of Jake's oversized sweatshirts and he had found me in it, along with my stash of other sweatshirts. He chased me around camp as I held onto his sweatshirts, shrieking with laughter.

"Come on, Mira!" He shouted, obviously starting to wear down. I felt myself starting to tire as well but I spotted the canoe dock up ahead and grinned triumphantly. I spurred myself forward to the lake and thought I was in the clear until Jake realized what I was doing.
"Don't you dare!" He yelled.

"I dare!" I shouted back, feet pounding against the dock. I took a leap toward the water before freezing in midair. I looked down and almost screamed in shock. I was about 15 feet above the water with no idea how I gotten that high. I felt myself slowly turn in midair until I was looking down at Jake, who was standing on the dock, arm reached out toward me. "Are you doing this?" I screamed above the wind that was whistling in my ears.

"I-I think so," he shouted back, obviously scared.

"Put me down!" I yelled. "Slowly!" I added as an afterthought. He shook his head, eyes wide with fear.

"I don't know how!"

"Just imagine me slowly being lowered to the ground," I said, trying to walk him through using his powers. He nodded, frowning in concentration. I felt myself starting to drop unsteadily, like a bouncy ball down stairs.
I groaned with the sudden wave of nausea that came over me. "A little slower, please."

"Sorry, sorry, I'm trying," he shouted, obviously stressed. I could see the sweat beading on his forehead and his breathing becoming labored. I knew he couldn't keep this up.

"Jake, just let me fall above the water," I said, looking down and gulping nervously. He looked up at me, surprised. "It won't hurt me," I said, hoping I was right. He nodded in understanding and let his arm fall. I closed my eyes and felt myself plummet downward, hitting the water hard. It didn't hurt as much as I thought it would, but it wasn't exactly a pleasant sensation. I opened my eyes and allowed myself to drift up to the surface. I saw Jake's worried face peering down at me from the edge of the dock and I gave him a reassuring smile to let him know I was okay. He visibly relaxed, sighing in relief. He held out a hand to me and pulled me up onto the dock. I was completely dry but the sweatshirts weren't so lucky. I had lost my grip on them in the air and they were now sinking below the surface of the water. I quickly reached out a hand and the water brought them onto the dock. I made a fist and they started to dry out, steam rising from them. Jake looked genuinely concerned about the sweatshirts for a second but when the steam cleared his sweatshirts were dry and looked good as new. I let him pick them up but kept the one I was wearing snuggled close to me. He didn't seem to notice, which was weird. I looked up at his face and saw that he was staring at the water with his brows furrowed, which was really hot, mind you.

No. Bad Mira. I thought to myself.

I followed his gaze to the water and saw what he was looking at. Ripples. Not little, normal ripples but big ripples, like a really large rock had been skipped over the water. Suddenly something broke the surface of the water at the end of the dock. Jake backed away from the water, standing in front of me protectively. I looked towards the water over his shoulder and my eyes widened.

"Dad?!"

The black-haired, bearded man with my eyes smiled kindly at me. I gently pushed Jake aside. "It's okay, Jake," I assured him. He nodded, but I could see how tense his shoulders were.

"You remember me," Poseidon spoke.

"I have a good memory," I replied as memories of him and my mom came rushing back. "You left..." My voice cracked.

"I know. I know, Mira. I am so sorry but we gods... We have responsibilities. Having a mortal family just does not really fit in with that," he said, sadness clear in his eyes.

"We weren't important. Yeah, I get it. I was never top priority to anyone but mom. She loved you, you know. She broke after you left. And I was the only one there to pick up the pieces!" I felt the tears running down my face. I hadn't even realized I was crying. I turned away from my father and into Jake's arms, hiding my face in his chest. His arms automatically wrapped around me and I could feel the glare he was giving Poseidon.

"I think it's time you leave," Jake said, his voice scarily calm.

"I came to warn you," was all the sea god said in return.

A/N: teeny little cliff hanger. Hey, but I updated! I felt the need to. I have everything planned out and I finally found the words to write it. It's a little short, but I wanted to stop it here. I'll update again ASAP
