Chapter 8

The next few days were pretty normal... Well, as normal as they could be at a camp full of half-gods and the occasional monster. The best thing by far was capture the flag. Both teams had been preparing all week. I was on the blue team along with Percy, the Athena cabin, and the Hermes cabin. The Ares and Hephaestus cabins joined forces with all of the smaller cabins, including Aether, meaning Jake and I were on separate teams. I was really looking forward to beating his butt. Luckily, since we were both newbies we were put on border patrol. Not very exciting, but being on the border of a creek and having water powers helped the time pass.

As the game began I took my place at the creek side. I didn't see anyone but I could just barely make out one of the traps in the trees,  probably set up by the Hephaestus kids, judging by how complicated it looked. It was like a classic net trap had been crossed with a giant squirrel trap to make a metal net-like cage that was set off by a trip wire on the ground. I decided to practice with my water powers a bit, and this trap was the perfect target. I scanned the area again before holding out my hand, focusing, and causing water to rise from the creek. I formed it into a vaguely spear-like shape and froze it, aiming the point at the trip wire. I pulled my hand back and thrust it forward fast, sending the ice spear spiraling through the air and hitting the wire, causing the trap to fall from the tree and snap closed on thin air.

"Gotcha!" I laughed, ecstatic at how well my plan had worked. Feeling giddy from the adrenaline rush, I jumped the stream and ran into enemy territory, arming myself with as much water as I could control easily while holding my trident. I only made it so far before I heard a growl and was knocked to the ground. I grunted at the sudden impact and the water splashed to the ground before my instincts kicked in. I rolled off my stomach and onto my back, knocking whoever it was off in the process. I quickly jumped up and help my spear to their neck.

"Jake?!" I half-shouted in shock.

"Surprise muthfucka," he laughed. I rolled my eyes at his catch phrase. The instant I looked away from him he swung his leg at mine, knocking me down yet again. He knocked my trident from my hand and pinned me down. I squirmed under him but he put more weight on me. "Wouldn't do that if I were you," he smiled, clearly enjoying my discomfort. I let myself relax and he loosened his grip. I used this to my advantage and yanked my wrists from his hands and punched him in the jaw. Hard. He grunted and fell off me and next thing he knew I was the one pinning him down.

I smirked down at him, "don't like it so much when the positions are switched now, do you?"

"Actually, I'm quite enjoying it," he grinned, looking at my chest.

"Perv!" I yelled, digging my knee into his gut. He groaned in pain.

"Okay okay, I'll stop," he surrendered.

"Good boy," I smiled. Now it was his turn to roll his eyes.

Just then the horn sounded and I heard cheers from my side of the creek. I smiled and stood up, bringing Jake up with me. I turned my trident back into a necklace and pulled it over my head.

"We should do that again sometime," he winked.

"In your dreams," I laughed, running to my side of the woods and leaving him grinning stupidly.

"Oh yeah, definitely," he called after me.

"You're such a pervert!" I yelled over my shoulder as I jumped back over the creek and joined my team. Percy smiled and gave me a high five.

"We won!" He shouted over the excited ruckus.

"I noticed!" I laughed. He picked me up and threw me over his shoulder in response, leaving me to hit his back and scream at him to let me down. He just shook his head laughing and ran out of the woods with the rest of the blue team. We didn't stop at the edge of the woods though. Percy kept running. I suddenly sensed water. Freshwater. We were at the canoe lake. I suddenly realized what was happening.

"No no no no no no no no no!" I shouted, hitting his back harder. "Bad Percy!"

Then I was flying through the air. I hit the water with a splash but something was weird. I heard a second, slightly delayed splash. I saw Jake through the bubbles and silently cursed Percy. I knew he had done this on purpose. I swam up to Jake and mouthed 'Percy'. He nodded. I sighed and swam up to the surface, Jake close behind. I broke the surface and glared up at Percy on the dock.

"Seriously, Perce," I muttered. He smiled cheekily.

"It's tradition," he shrugged. "Couples get thrown in the canoe lake."

"We're not a couple!" I spluttered.

"Well we could be," Jake offered.

"Shut up," I said. "Don't give him any ideas."

"Oh I already have plenty. And you sure you aren't a couple? It sure looked like it during capture the flag," he smirked.

"NO!" I glared, sending a wave of water at him. He just laughed as it splashed over him while he remained dry. I growled in frustration. "Let us up," I scowled.

"Not until you kiss," he grinned.

"WHAT?" I shouted.

"Oh come on, Mira," Jake smiled, wrapping an arm around my waist. I sighed and went with it, ducking underwater. Jake looked at me, seeming surprised. I just smiled sweetly at him and brought my hands up to his face, placing my thumbs over his lips and pressing my lips to them. We stayed like that for a second before I moved away and swam back up. Percy looked pleased as he pulled me up into the dock. Jake pouted at me from the water. He was then pulled up and given a towel.

He stood next to me and whispered, "you could have just actually kissed me."

"And why would I do that?" I asked teasingly, trying hard not to blush. He sighed and we walked back up to camp together.

A/N: this was so fun to write. It was shorter than most of my stuff but I felt the need to update. Comment and tell me what you think!
