Chapter 5

In the Hermes cabin, I watched the other kids laugh and joke around with each other. I'll admit, I felt like a bit of an outsider. Everyone here had been through so much together. There were other new kids too, but Jake and I were the greenies of the group. (Who gets the reference?)

Jake got along well with the others, him being his charming self. The girls seemed to take a special liking to him. I felt my stomach twist in jealousy but I pushed the feeling aside. No use getting jealous about some harmless flirting. Besides, I wasn't too worried about it. Jake had never been into dating as long as I had know him. He'd turned down every girl that had hit on him gently. I wasn't sure exactly why. Lots of those girls were pretty and smart and funny, but he never seemed interested. Maybe he wasn't even into girls?

Around 9 o'clock, people started filing out of the cabin. Jake and I stood up and followed the others across camp to a large amphitheater. A huge, bright bonfire was blazing in the center. Campers were talking and singing, passing around s'mores. As we sat down with the Hermes kids, the Stolls pointed out a large group of campers, probably siblings, who obviously led the singalong. They sang weird songs like 'This Land is Minos's Land,' 'I Am My Own Great-Great-Great-Great Grandpa,' and 'Down By the Aegean.' I didn't understand what any of that meant but they had pretty good singing voices. The fire even seemed to respond, burning higher, growing over 20 feet tall and turning a bright golden color.

As the last of the campers sat down, a hush suddenly fell over the crowd. A bluish-green light was cast over everything and I looked around in confusion. They were staring at me- no, above me. I looked up and my jaw dropped open.

Above me was a weird ball of green light, a trident symbol in the center. I tried moving but it moved with me. I looked around again as whispers broke out among the crowd. The chatter grew louder and louder until I heard someone clear their throat.

Everyone turned to see Chiron in the center of the amphitheater, all except one person that is. The boy I had seen earlier at the dining pavilion with the blonde girl was staring right at me. I dropped my gaze nervously and turned to Chiron.

"I see we have our first claiming of the night. Mira, daughter of Poseidon. Percy, I trust you'll show her to your cabin?" Chiron questioned. At the mention of his name, Percy, I presumed, turned his attention from me to Chiron and gave him a short nod. Chiron nodded back and trotted out of the center of the amphitheater just as the glowing orb thingy started to fade from over my head.

As the talking started up once again I saw Percy say something to the blonde seating next to him and walk over to where Jake and I were seated. He smiled kindly at me and I studied his face. He really did look similar to me. His hair was darker and messier and his eyes weren't as vibrant green as mine, but he had a chiseled jaw and strong features. He was definitely handsome. My thoughts were interrupted by him saying something.

"Hey, I'm Percy... I guess you can call me your older brother now," he said, scratching the back of his neck. I smiled up at him.

"I'm Mira... Well I guess you already knew that," I laughed nervously, biting my lip out of habit.

"No need to be so nervous, I'm cool, I swear," he chuckled. Suddenly he was pushed to the side by the curly haired blonde from earlier.

"Who said you were cool, Seaweed Brain? Don't listen to a word he says," she told me. I saw Percy make a face similar to a sad seal pup out of the corner of my eye. I held back a laugh. "I'm Annabeth, by the way. Your brother's girlfriend," she smiled. "And future wife," I heard Percy mutter. "What was that?" She asked. "Nothiiiiing," he answered, blushing furiously. I couldn't hold it back anymore. I burst out laughing, earning a few confused looks from those around us.

After I pulled myself together, Percy's attention turned to Jake. "Who's this? Your boyfriend?" He asked, glaring at Jake. Jake raised his hands defensively, looking a bit nervous.

"Why does everyone think that?" I exclaimed. "Jake's my best friend," I said, resting my head on his shoulder. Jake smirked and wrapped his arm around my waist, making me blush slightly. I saw Percy's eyes narrow at his actions and watched as Annabeth elbowed him in the side, muttering something about him being over protective and giving me an apologetic look. I just chuckled at the two of them. They were just kids but it seemed like they had been together for a long time, like an old married couple.

After another claiming (a girl who turned out to be a daughter of Iris), the fire died down and people started wandering back to their respective cabins. I went with Jake to get my stuff from the Hermes cabin. It didn't feel right leaving him there but I had to go to my father's cabin. I collected my stuff and gave Jake a hug before walking out of the Hermes cabin to where Percy was waiting outside. I let him grab my bag from me and laughed as he almost dropped it.

"What did you put in this thing? It weighs a ton! How do you carry this?" He exclaimed, hauling it onto his back.

"I must have godly strength," I laughed. He rolled his eyes at me. "It has basically everything I will ever need in it."

He gave me a questioning look. "How does all of that fit?"

"Enchanted bag," I shrugged. "I guess I that makes more sense now."

Percy nodded and we walked into Cabin 3. I instantly loved it. Even though it was currently dark, I could tell the walls were made of abalone and the smell of the ocean was in the air and I could feel a slight sea breeze. I saw six neat bunk beds and and a mobile with... Fish ponies? (I had to)

"Pick a bed," Percy said. I pointed to a bed adjacent to the bunk that looked owned. Percy nodded and set my bag down. "You can unpack but lights out is in a little while, so you might want to save it until morning," he informed.

"I think I'll wait," I said. He nodded and started getting ready for bed.

I grabbed some clothes out of my bag and went to the bathroom to shower. It had been a long day and I felt gross. I slipped out of my clothes and hopped into the shower, sighing contently as the warm water hit my back. I washed my hair and rinsed off before getting out and drying off. I threw on a pair of sweatpants and a tank top before leaving the bathroom. I climbed into bed, but on second thought, got up and grabbed one of Jake's hoodies I had kept and pulled it on. I jumped back into bed and snuggled into the pillow, pulling the blanket up to my chin.

"Oh, one more thing," I heard. I rolled over to look at Percy. "Don't go out at night unless you want the harpies to eat you." I wasn't sure what that meant but muttered an okay anyways. I saw Percy smile in the faint light coming through the window. "Good night sis," he said sleepily.

"Good night bro," I smiled, snuggling further into my pillow.

A while later I heard his quiet snores fill the cabin. I turned and stared up at the ceiling. I couldn't sleep. I sighed and got out of bed, slipping on a pair of converse. Despite Percy's warning, I crept out of the cabin quietly. I quickly crossed across the center of the Omega to the Hermes cabin, keeping a look out for any harpies, whatever those were. I tiptoed inside, trying not to step on anyone which was a feat in itself. Eventually I reached the patch of floor where Jake was sleeping. I slipped off my shoes and laid down next to him.

"Mira?" I heard his sleepy voice ask as he blinked tiredly. I bit my lip. That sleepy voice was really hot. No, bad Mira. I shook my head to clear my thoughts.

"Couldn't sleep?" He asked. I nodded. He reached out and pulled me into his arms, enveloping me in his warmth. I snuggled into him and closed my eyes, listening to his quiet breathing and feeling the steady rise and fall of his chest. After a few minutes I drifted off into a peaceful sleep.
