Chapter 2

I pushed myself against the doors, trying to open them while staying out of the way of the flying debris. It was like a hurricane had come out of no where, but I knew for a fact that it was supposed to be full sunshine with temperatures in the high 80s for the next week.

More flying cloud-like shapes had begun to appear. I swear I saw one that looked like a horse. I shoved my shoulder against the door again, wiggling the door handle, but it seemed like someone had locked it from the inside. Crap. I turned so my back was to the door and ducked just in time to avoid a flying tree branch about 3 feet long and 6 inches thick. Before I could tell for Terran to duck it was too late. It hit him in the head and he crumbled to the ground.

"TERRAN!" I screamed, but it was useless. I loosened my grip on the door handle, fighting the wind as I reached for him. I almost was taken by the wind, but I grabbed the collar of Terran's shirt before I was swept away and his weight helped keep me grounded.

I gripped the door handle again, willing the storm to be over and then everything was calm. Not a cloud in the sky.

"What just happened?" I wondered aloud. Suddenly the doors were thrown open and someone pulled both Terran and I inside, and covered us with their body. I smelled a faint scent of cologne and pine trees.

"Ouch," I mumbled, trying to wiggle myself out from under the person. He looked down at me with familiar blue eyes. "Jake," I said breathlessly.

"Are you okay?" He asked concernedly, shifting his weight to look at me better.

"Er... Yeah, I'm fine," I said, painfully aware that his face was mere inches from mine. I blushed and looked at Terran. "Terran's not though. He got hit pretty hard with a tree branch," I explained. "The storm's gone though."

"It's gone?! Just like that?" He asked, eyes wide in confusion as he rolled off me to face the still-open doors. Sure enough, the sky was it's normal blue and everything seemed to be perfectly normal. Even the damage and debris that had been there seemed to have cleaned itself up.

"What are you doing here? You should be in class!" A voice snapped at us. Jake and I both turned to face the angry teacher. Wonderful. My least favorite teacher, Ms. Roach, just happened to be the one to find us. "Get to class, NOW!" She ordered and stomped off. Weird, she didn't even notice the unconscious boy laying in the middle of the hallway. Jake and I shrugged at each other.

Just then, Terran sat up, groaning and rubbing his head, which had developed a nasty bump. Jake and I went over to him and helped him up.

"You okay?" I asked as we helped him down the hallway. I heard weird clicking noises behind us, like high-heels, but deeper. I looked around but saw no one. I returned my attention forward again.

"Yeah. I'm ok. Just a little bruised. Do you know where my shoes are?" Terran asked. I looked down and for the first time noticed his bare feet... Er-hooves. Wait... WHAT?! I had to blink a few times to make sure I was seeing it right, but there they were, clear as day.

This day just keeps getting weirder and weirder. Maybe I have a concussion... But that explains the clicking noise.

"A-are those HOOVES?!" Jake asked increduously.

Okay, so I'm not the only one who can see them...

Terran gave him a weird look. "You can see them?" He asked. We both nodded, all staring at each other. "Great. Just great. That's two now. Maybe he's not one of them. I couldn't smell him. But he can see them," Terran mumbled.

"Uh... What?" I asked, confused. Jake looked just as lost as I was.

"You guys have to come with me. Now," Terran ordered, pulling us back towards the doors we had come in through.

"Where are we going? And what if the storm comes back?" Jake questioned. Terran gave him another weird look.

"You remember the storm?" He asked.

"Um... Yeah... It was like 2 minutes ago. Almost killed you guys. Of course I remember," Jake answered.

"We need to go," Terran said, pulling us along faster. I stubbornly fought against his grip. I held my ground against him, causing him to let out a exasperated sigh and turn back towards me.

"I'm not going anywhere. I can't ditch school, especially if I have no clue where we are going," I stated, folding my arms across my chest. Terran sighed again.

"Fine. We are going somewhere safe. That was no normal storm, and I promise I will tell you everything when we get past the border, but I can't tell you here. It would draw to much attention, especially with two of you," he said, which honestly left me with more questions than answers.

"Oh, you already have my attention," a voice said from behind Terran and Jake. They spun around, facing the doors again. I looked over their heads and what I saw made me want to curl up in a ball and pee myself. The thing I was looking at was definitely not human, and it had a weird accent. It had greyish skin and wings sticking out of it's back. The thing was standing on two legs like a person and it's creepy yellow eyes were watching us carefully. I wanted to run but I was too scared to move.

"Don't. Move," Terran ordered quietly. He was visibly shaking. Of course, being the idiot that he was, Jake moved -scratch that, he charged. Straight at the monster. Terran made a wild grab at him, trying to pull him back but missing.

Jake was just a few feet away when the monster turned and focused it's full attention on him, hissing fiercely. I saw it lunge and I watched wide-eyed as Jake threw himself bodily at the monster, rolling between it's legs at the last possible second. The monster turned towards him, putting it's back to us. I saw Jake mouth a message to me 'run'. I shook my head vigorously at him as the monster lunged again, talons making an appearence in it's ugly scaly arms. Jake dodged, trying to keep the monster's back to us. 'Go' he insisted, silently. So I did the logical thing. I ran at the monster's back, kicking off the ground and landing on it's back. I wrapped my arms tightly around it's neck as it tried to shake me loose, clawing angrily at my arms. I saw Jake's shocked face before feeling a shooting pain up my arm. I almost lost my grip as my vision turned red, but managed to stay in my position. Suddenly, the monster toppled forward, letting out a shriek of surprise. Then it was still.

I looked up from the ground to see Jake standing over the thing, breathing heavily with a large, sharp object in his hand. Upon further inspection I saw it was one of the monster's talons. Jake followed my gaze and dropped the talon.

"It broke off while it was trying to kill me," he said. I stood up shakily, looking around. I saw Terran still shaking further down the hall where I had left him.

"Thanks for the help," I said, brushing myself off and starting toward him. I could tell he was still a little shell-shocked and I won't lie, I was too, but I was running on adrenaline. "I'm ready to go to whatever this safe place is, now, as long as there are none of those there," I said, gesturing to the monster. Terran nodded simply. "Though I have two requests. 1, we take a different exit so I don't have to see that thing, and 2, I get to tell my parents before we go anywhere." Terran started to protest but I interrupted him, "that's the only way I'll go anywhere." He sighed and shook his head defeatedly, and we walked down the hall, away from the monster. As we passed my locker I made the guys wait while I grabbed my new bridle. No way was I leaving it. I had wanted it for months! I slung it over my shoulder and felt a slight breeze pick up in the hall. I looked behind us and saw the monster was no longer there, only a small pile of sand in it's place, quickly being blown away.

This is the weirdest day of my life.
