Chapter 19

Seriously guys, read Vitiligo Boy by @KuudereGenki to understand this upcoming character.

"Nico!" My eyes shot wide open and I jumped up, barely registering where I was or who was near me as I called out for my injured companion. I scanned the room, seeing cocoon of blankets with a tuft of black hair. I ran to Nico's side, pulling off the blankets like a kid unwrapping presents on their birthday, but with a lot less excitement and a lot more fear.

I pulled the blankets away from his shoulder, revealing the bandages wrapped around it.

"What did you do?" I asked the multicolored boy I had managed to scare the crap out of during my adrenaline rush (this is were it'd be good to have read VB just saying).

"Hey, hey," he said, using a soothing tone as he approached me carefully, as if I was a frightened cat stuck in a tree. "You came out of literally nothing and I'm just trying to help. You have a small rash from irritations-"

I didn't give him the chance to finish his sentence. He'd lost me at 'hey'. I didn't care right now. All I wanted was to get Nico back to camp where he could be treated properly.

"We have to go. We have to get back to camp," I rushed, scooping up Nico, careful not to jostle his shoulder as I put him over my own. I quickly found the stairway and took the stairs up two at a time. The boy followed behind, rambling some reasoning that I didn't care enough to listen to.

"You don't even know where you are," his voice finally broke through my selective hearing. I froze. He had a point... I slowly turned back to face him, fighting the glare that I naturally wore around annoying strangers and replacing it with a determined look. "And I don't know your name," he continued. This boy needs to get his priorities straight I thought. Names were not important right now.

I shook my head with a sigh, "where am I?"

"Washington," he answered, leaning against the doorframe, "we're thirty minutes from Seattle if you take the interstate."

Shit, I mentally cursed. Camp was on the other side of the country. My thoughts were interrupted by him continuing to talk. Gods, this boy was a chatterbox.

"You have a demon mutt that got you here, you have anything else, magic girl?"

Oh, if only he knew... Wait...

"You saw Mrs. O'Leary?" I asked, somewhat in disbelief. There was no way this kid was one of us. The chances of him, of all people, finding us were about one in a million. But judging by his reaction, he had no idea what he was. I planned on keeping it that way until I knew for sure. Plus, if he was, that would make his scent that much stronger, and we don't need three smelly demigods to alert every monster in the state that it's dinner time.

I walked up to the weird kid and yanked his collar, determined to know more as I narrowed my eyes at his wide ones, looking for an answer.

"So what if I did?" he asked, tilting his head. This cocky little-

I didn't wait for a definitive response, taking his as a yes. I turned, dragging him with me, still carrying Nico. I quickly looked over the area, grabbing the car keys and forcing them into the kid's hand. "You're taking me to the nearest beach," I ordered. He paused, seemingly lost in thought as he stared at me, making me shift uncomfortably, but I played it off as adjusting the Hades child on my shoulder.

"Mom'ma would whoop my ass if I put a random girl and a dying child into my truck," he said matter-of-factly. He was still looking at me weirdly. I was done with this. We were wasting time. I huffed and pushed him toward the door.

"Now." I rushed. He nodded and led the way to his truck. I climbed in, gently setting Nico in the back of the cab and claiming the passenger's seat as my own. The new kid started the engine and peeled off, getting into the interstate quickly. Finally, a sense of urgency! I put my feet up on the dashboard, finally allowing my self to relax.

"Mira," I introduced myself, finally awarding him a response to his concern earlier.

"Peyton," he replied with a grin that spread across his mostly-pale face. He kept his eyes trained forward on the road as I let my head fall back against the headrest.
