Brother/Sister Bonding Time And Other Pre-Quest Rituals

I immediately sat up in bed, my cheeks wet with tears. I tried to remember what was making me cry but I couldn't. "Hey Hana? You okay?" I heard Percy ask. I nodded and wiped my eyes with my blanket. That's when I noticed something strange, the marks that usually appeared on my wrists and neck in the morning, they weren't there. "Hey, is there any particular reason you kept whimpering law last night?" Percy asked, pulling me out of my thoughts.

"Huh?" I looked up at him. "I....I don't know...." I said quietly.

Percy nodded, and jumped out of bed. "At least turn around so I can get dressed." He said. I nodded and did so. Once he was done and out of the cabin I got changed as well. I tried to think of the reason I kept saying law last night. I shook it off as I walked out of the cabin. Percy was standing there talking to Grover.

I gave him a wave and a smile. "What's up?" I asked.

Grover looked nervous. "Mr. D wants to see Percy." He said.

"Why?" Percy asked.

"He wants to kill.....I mean, I better let him tell you." Grover said. Percy nodded and followed after Grover. Against my better judgment, I decided to tag along. I listened to Grover explain to Percy how normal weather didn't effect us here at camp. We walked to the big house where Chiron and Mr. D were playing pinochle against two invisible opponents.

"Well, well, our little celebrity." Mr. D said, sounding rather bored. I crossed my arms and leaned against a post as Percy stood there like an idiot. "Come closer." Mr. D added, sounding a little annoyed. "And don't expect me to kowtow to you, mortal, just because old Barnacle-Beard is your father." I laughed a little at this, making Mr. D smile a bit. The two of us had a weird relationship due to our bond over the fact that we were both stuck at Camp, unable to leave, well, at least Mr. D could go to Olympus. Suddenly there was a huge blast of lightning, so big that the thunder shook the windows of the house. I jumped back in shock as did Grover.

"Blah, blah, blah," Mr. D grumbled. Chiron pretended to be interested in his hand of cards as Grover stood by me nervously.

"If I had it my way," Mr. D said, catching my attention. "I would cause your molecules to erupt into flames. We'd sweep up the ashes and be done with a lot of trouble. But Chiron," He glared at said centaur. "seems to feel that would be against my mission at this cursed camp: to keep you little brats safe from harm."

"Spontaneous combustion is a form of harm, Mr. D," Chiron added.

Mr. D sighed. "Nonsense, boy wouldn't feel a thing." I glanced over at Percy who was turning pale. "Nevertheless, I've agreed to restrain myself. I'm thinking of turning you into a dolphin instead, sending you back to your father." Mr. D said.

I snorted. "You're in need of some new material, Mr. D. If I had a drachmae for ever time I've heard that—" "I'll still turn you into one too." Mr. D said, looking at me from over his cards.

"Mr. D—" Chiron warned.

"Oh, all right," Mr. D said, turning his attention to Percy. "There's one more option. But it's deadly foolishness." He said as he stood up, setting down his cards. The floating cards also dropped to the table. "I'm off to Olympus for the emergency meeting. If the boy is still here when I get back, I'll turn him into an Atlantic bottlenose. Do you understand?" This was directed at Chiron. "And Perseus Jackson, if you're at all smart, you'll see that's much more sensible choice than what Chiron feels you must do." He picked up a card and it turned into a security pass, before snapping his fingers. The air began to fold and shift around him and then he was gone, leaving behind the faint smell of grapes.

Chiron then turned to us, he had a smile on his face, but I could tell he was tired. "Why don't you three take a seat" I did as I was told, as did Percy and Grover. Chiron laid his cards on the table as he turned to Percy. "Tell me Percy, what did you make of the hellhound?" Percy seemed to process his answer before speaking. I was curious as to what had happened, due to the fact I missed the entire thing because of my blackout.

"It scared me. If you hadn't shot it, I'd be dead." Percy said, certainly sounding a little shaken.

"You'll meet far worse, Percy. Far worse before you're done." Chiron said, and I felt my stomach drop.

"Done......with what?" Percy asked, but the blood was practically roaring in my ears as I spoke.

"With your quest." I grumbled, glaring at Chiron. He gave me a sympathetic look.

"If you choose to accept it that is." He said. I looked back at Grover who was crossing his fingers.

"Um, sir." Percy said, looking at all of our faces. "You haven't told me what it is yet."

Chiron grimaced. "Well, that's the hard part, the details." Thunder rumbled in the distance.

"Poseidon and Zeus, they're fighting something valuable.....something that was stolen, aren't they?" Percy asked. We all looked at each other and then at him in shock.

"How did you know that?" Chiron asked, sitting forward in his chair. Percy blushed.

"The weather since Christmas has been weird, like the sea and the sky are fighting. Then I talked to Annabeth, and she'd overheard something about a theft. And.....I've also been having these dreams." As soon as Percy said that something clicked. My weird dream the night he came to camp, the boy in the dream, it was him. My face paled as Grover practically cheered, despite Chiron shushing him.

"Only the Oracle can determine." Chiron said, stroking his beard. "Nevertheless, Percy, you are correct. Your father and Zeus are having their worst quarrel in centuries. They are fighting over something valuable that was stolen. To be precise: a lightning bolt."

Percy laughed nervously, despite the thunder in the distance. "A what?"

"Do not take this lightly," Chiron warned. "I'm not talking about some tinfoil-covered zigzag you'd see in a second grade school play. I'm talking about a two-foot-long cylinder of high grade celestial bronze capped on both ends with god-level explosives."

"Oh." Was all Percy managed to say. I sighed as I listened to Chiron explain in more detail what Zeus's master bolt was and what it could do.

"And it's missing?" Percy asked.

"Stolen." I corrected. He looked at me.

"By who?" He asked.

Chiron immediately corrected him. "By whom. And by you." He added. Percy's jaw dropped. "At least," Chiron said, holding up a hand to stop any questions Percy had. "That's what Zeus thinks." He went on to explain how the bolt went missing on the winter solstice during one of Poseidon and Zeus's famous arguments. He explained how a god couldn't steal another god's symbol of power, but how a demigod could.

I managed to tune them out as their conversation continued on. At least until Percy called Zeus crazy. Then the sky got much darker due to the storm clouds completely covering the sky above Camp. Chiron and Percy nevertheless(look at me, using big words, boy I feel fancy) continued their conversation, talking about how Poseidon tried to unseat Zeus before.

"But I'm just a kid!" Percy said, looking around at us. I sighed and Grover cut in.

"Percy, if you were Zeus, and you already thought your brother was plotting to overthrow you, and then your brother admitted he had broken the sacred oath he took after World War II, that he's fathered a new mortal hero who might be used as a weapon against you.....Wouldn't that put a twist in your toga?" He said. Percy glanced at me, then at Chiron.

"Why is everyone blaming me? Why not Hana? She's been here longer than I have." He said. I sighed and stood up and walked over to the railing, my back to the three.

"Because I've never left camp. Ever." I said.

"What do you mean?" He asked. I glanced back at Chiron.

"The only other gods besides your father who knows about the existence of Hana are Mr. D and Hestia. She has never left camp due to an enchantment put on her. Should she ever leave camp...." he trailed off.

"Should I ever leave camp the guy who tried to kill me could find me. As long as I stay here no god, goddess, monster, or mortal will know I exist. If I ever leave camp I'd be signing my own death certificate." I said angrily.

Everyone was silent for a minute, but Percy then asked the next question that must have been on his mind.

"I didn't steal anything. Poseidon—my dad—he didn't really have this master bolt stolen, did he?" He asked quietly. I sighed and pushed off the railing.

"Thievery isn't old Barnacle-Beard's style. If anyone needs me I'll be in my cabin." I said, walking away. As I left I could hear them continuing their conversation. I slowly walked towards my cabin. Once I got there I reached under my bunk and pulled out my trunk. I opened it up to reveal three things, a glass jar that was filled with a small handful of bullets made of a strange blue stone, and a faded purple t-shirt with fish on it, much to small for me now, and finally a red knitted cap, with two strings going down either side and on the bottom of each was a heart. I don't know why I kept any of these things, but for some weird reason, it made me feel almost safe. I held the hat close to my chest as I tried to clear my head. I wasn't sure how long I had been sitting there but I heard someone opening the door. I quickly began to put my things back in the trunk. Just I shoved the trunk under my bed Percy walked in. "What's up?" I asked as Percy walked over to his bunk.

"I'm going on a quest." He replied. I nodded.

"Picked who's going with yet?" I asked.

"Yeah, Grover and Annabeth." I couldn't help but smile at that.

"That's good. I can tell it kills her being stuck here." I said, looking out a window. Percy stood still for a moment.

"Does it kill you?" He asked. I looked down at my hands.

"Yeah, a little. But it makes me feel better to see my friends getting their chances....." I said. Percy nodded, neither of us wanting to continue talking. I watched as Percy packed what little he did have. It was almost heartbreaking as I watched him look at his Minotaur horn that hung on the wall.

"Do you miss her?" Percy asked quietly.

"Who?" I asked, looking up at him.

"Your mother."

I turned away. "I don't remember enough about her too miss her." I said quietly. Percy looked at me, strangely, he had a smile on his face.

"Well, when I get back with my mom, I'll be sure to introduce you. She'd love you." He said. I smiled.

"I look forward to it."
