Chapter 8
Over the next week, Leon and I passed each other in the hallway at school several times a day. He never said anything, but I could tell that he was still hoping. He still thought that one time when I saw him, I would walk and ask him to help me. But I just couldn't.
This week I had a project due for my English class. It was a book report about Mary Shelly's Frankenstein. School was done for the day, but I was heading to the library so I could use one of their computers. But as I was walking by the doors to the pool, I heard a large splash and lots of cheering.
My feet stopped moving without my consent and suddenly I was peeking in through the window. It looked like the girl's swim team was having a practice. My old teammates, as well as some new faces, were gathered around the coach watching someone as they swam. They were cheering them on as the coach timed them with a stopwatch he was holding.
I watched as they swam to the end and flipped, heading back. I couldn't help but remember what that felt like, the water flowing past you, friends cheering you on. As they made it back to the other end, everyone finished their cheers and clapped. My eyes began to sting as tears flowed from my eyes. I missed it so much...
Maybe... maybe it really was time.
As the thought crossed my mind, I heard footsteps and looked to see Leon heading down another hallway. He was dressed in his baseball uniform and he carried a book bag with his gear. I took off after him, running down the hallway. Luckily for me, there were no teachers around.
Once I got close, he turned around, confusion on his face. As he noticed who I was, he smiled and stopped walking. I slowed down to my regular walk and he said hi when I was in front of him. I smiled and took a deep breath, not really sure if I was ready for this, but I had to try anyway.
"Hey, Leon..."
The End.
