Chapter 4- School Shopping

"IN THE FIRST PLACE, GOD MADE IDIOTS. THAT WAS FOR PRACTICE. THEN HE MADE SCHOOL BOARDS." -Mark Twain

"ONYX, HURRY UP." Uncle Albus yelled up to her as Onyx brushed her hair out of her eyes.

"Coming, Uncle." She yelled back at him as she brushed the last of her hair behind her ears.

She quickly braided her hair into one long plait so that it was out of her face then she sprang up and ran towards her Uncle's voice.

When Onyx found him she launched herself into his open arms as he gave her a hug. "Happy 11th, Onyx," Uncle said smiling down at her skinny form.

"Thank you," Onyx replied separating herself from him while grinning crazily at him. "What are we doing today?"

"Well, we are going to get your supplies from Diagon Alley and afterwards I have a surprise for you." Uncle Albus said.

Then uncle Albus and Onyx walked towards each other and precisely on step Uncle turned, grabbed her arm, and they apparated.

They appeared in a little forest and looking around Onyx quickly recognized the trees. Yew, they only grow around a small city in England. So, was the Leaky Caldron in this city? Uncle Albus then started walking interrupting her train of thought and began to move along a small path with Onyx quickly hurried after him. After about 20 minutes they came out into a busy little town right next to three different buildings.

"Now look around. What do you notice that is different about these few buildings?" Albus asked Onyx. The white-haired girl looked at all the people that were around them and noticed that each of their gazes was flitting over the middle building like it wasn't there.

"They can't see the middle building can they?" Onyx said watching the odd scene before her.

"Very good Onyx, they can't see the middle building, nor can they see us." Uncle Albus said lightly tapping her on the head.

Onyx felt like a very cold egg was broken over her head and she cringed as the cold feeling trickled through her entire body. She looked down after the feeling had spread throughout her whole body and started. The outline of her body was faintly there, but her body exactly matched the scenery behind her.

Then Onyx felt a hand on her shoulder and she knew it was uncle Albus who whispered, "Relax it's just a Charm to keep you invisible to any muggles as they'll definitely take notice of your wings."

Quickly the white-haired duo walked to the middle building and after stepping over the threshold they came into a run down pub. Walking quickly through the pub they came to a brick wall uncle Albus quickly started tapping bricks with his wand and as soon as he tapped the one that was sticking out slightly from the otherwise even brick wall an archway began to form that would easily fit Hagrid, the grounds gamekeeper.

"Welcome to Diagon Alley." uncle Albus said.

Then they stepped through the archway and when Onyx looked down at her body she could see herself again. Uncle Albus then started walking towards the big building at the very end of the street that said Gringotts with the white-haired girl trailing slightly after him.

They quickly went into the building and went over to an available goblin.

"Quincey, we need to take this lovely lady to vault 886," Uncle said.

Without missing a beat the goblin whistled and a cart came rattling down to where they were. Onyx hopped over the side of the cart and sat down carefully tucking her hair over her shoulder while Uncle and Quincey went through the door on the side. Then the cart was rattling down and down and down going much faster than it was before yet strangely Onyx felt rather comfortable. Suddenly the cart stopped and she nearly flew forward, but Uncle Albus had luckily caught her though Onyx instantly felt the feeling of comfort vanish.

"Thank you," Onyx said to him before jumping out of the cart again.

She quickly jogged to the door that had vault 886 above it, but then she heard a roar. Onyx turned around as the comforting feeling fled even farther away. She was face to face with a gargantuan dragon.

Suddenly Onyx felt something prodding at her mind and then she felt an explosion of pain. Then she felt and at the same time heard a low deep voice speaking into her mind. I'm sorry, daughter I didn't know it was you. Then through the haze of pain Onyx saw the dragon back away and she soon felt the presence leave her mind. Onyx shot Uncle Albus a look that said you have some explaining to do. He just nodded and then she turned my attention back to Quincey.

"Ok Miss Dumbledore all you have to do is put your hand on the vault." He said.

Onyx cringed in her head at this. In public places such as this bank, she had to go by her Uncle's last name. Not that she had anything against it, but she rather liked her actual last name. Plus going by her Uncle's last name usually resulted in much more attention then she felt like dealing with.

Then heeding the goblin's words Onyx turned to the vault and pressed her hand against it. The door simply melted away as if it was never there. Inside she saw mountains of gold, silver, and bronze and instantly the comforting feeling came back.

"Okay, so this is pretty simple 29 bronze knuts to a sickle and 17 silver sickles to a galleon," Uncle said pulling a money purse out of nowhere and handing it to the white-haired girl.

Onyx grabbed 150 galleons 100 sickles and 50 bronze knuts and put them into the purse.

"Undetectable extension charm?" She said still focusing on putting the stuff into the purse.

"Precisely." Uncle Albus said.

As soon as she had finished they walked out the door and when she turned around saw an engraving of a white whip-like dragon imprinted on the door.

Onyx jumped back into the cart and they were off again rattling back up at a very fast pace. They got back up she jumped back out and feeling several gazes on her. When she turned to see who was watching her she saw a boy and girl with long black hair, grey eyes, and identical frames and height looking at her. Then only way she knew which was which was because the girl had a more feminine face and longer hair. Turning away she walked out of Gringotts with Uncle Albus after thanking the goblin.

They stopped at all the stores and by lunchtime, they had only 3 left. Ollivanders, the pet shop where Uncle said she could pick out a cat, and Flourish and Blotts.

Onyx ordered a small salad and then heard a voice ask, "Do you mind if I join you everywhere else is full?" She tensed up, it was the twins from early.

"Of course not." She heard Uncle say. Then the two sat down.

Onyx quickly studied the two twins taking in all the information she could about them that she didn't see earlier. They both looked almost exactly alike. They had the same pair of silver eyes through the boy's were just a shade lighter. She confirmed her guess from earlier that they were both exactly the same height as well. The only big difference she found between the two was her previous observation that the girl's hair was much longer than her male counterpart though his was about chin length.

Suddenly out of the blue the boy asked, "What's your name?"

"Onyx," she replied stiffly stabbing my fork into my salad, "You two?"

"I'm Sirius Orion Black and my sister is Allesandra Karma Black." He replied proudly a huge grin breaking out on his face.

Onyx watched silently amused as Allesandra punched Sirius's arm rather hard and he let out a yelp holding his arm in fake hurt.

"You can call me Karma just like everybody else. I hate my first name." She said rather aggressively.

Onyx held my hands up in mock surrender and continued to eat her food as quickly as she could.

When she was done and had stood up Sirius asked another question in a teasing manner, "So, Snow White what house do you want to be in?"

Instantly Onyx felt rage flare up making my hands feel white hot and her insides boil. She shot him the sharpest glare she could and she silently turned and followed Uncle Albus cursing him in her head.

Onyx couldn't believe it. Of, course he is just like everybody else. The second anyone came near her they have to make a mean comment about her hair. Why? It's not contagious it's just different. She really couldn't believe his audacity in teasing her about that. Didn't he ever hear the saying if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all? She really hoped she didn't run into him too often at school.

As quickly as Onyx could she forced herself to calm down, but the excitement she possessed earlier did not come back.

They quickly decided they were going to stop at Ollivanders first, so after walking down several busy streets filled with shoppers they entered the small wand shop. When they opened the door a small bell rang and an older grey haired fellow popped up in front of them.

"Hello Mr. Ollivander, we came to get a wand for the dragon daughter here." Uncle Albus said.

Onyx shot him a questioning look intending to ask him why being the Daughter of the Dragons would affect what wand she would get, but then reeled back barely avoiding crashing into a stack of hawthorn wands as she felt the same splitting pain as before when the dragon entered her mind. Onyx then felt the same kind of presence enter her mind though admittedly much weaker than the dragon's and it seemed to whisper All will be explained soon by your mother.

"What's your wand hand?" Mr. Ollivander asked.

"I don't have a preferred one," Onyx muttered still wildly thinking about what Uncle Albus meant when he talked to Mr. Ollivander.

Mr. Ollivander went in circles around her taking measurements while muttering instructions as to things for her to do to make measurements easier.

"Ok since your the dragon daughter this process should be simpler than normal. I want you to put your hands out and focus extremely hard on calling your wand to you." Mr. Ollivander said.

Questioning the fact that she was supposed to call a wand, without saying anything, Onyx put both her hands in front of her and concentrated extremely hard on imagining a stick flying through the air and into her hands. Suddenly Onyx felt an object in her hands and a burning sensation in her stomach. Suddenly her feet slowly began to lift off the ground and when she looked down she saw golf fire was enwreathing her and clutched tightly in her hands a smooth cedar wood wand engraved in Latin sat there. She felt fear writh up in her stomach as she panicked wondering why she was freaking floating in the air.

Over the steadily rising wind that was rushing through the shop whipping wands everywhere she heard Uncle call out, "Calm down Onyx or your going to rip this entire place apart!"

She tried to force herself to calm down and to gently float down to the floor but the winds only continued to grow. Scared beyond belief Onyx looked down on the crouching forms of her Uncle and Mr. Ollivander as they attempted to shield themselves from being hit with flying wands.

When Onyx saw the terrified look on Mr. Ollivanders face as a wand narrowly missed his face and got stuck in his fraying hair she quickly grabbed one of the still standing shelves and used it to pull herself fearfully down towards the ground. As her feet touched the ground the winds slowly began to die down and she rushed over to the crouching forms of the two men.

Quickly Onyx looked into the reflective glass and to her immense surprise her eyes were glowing bright white. She stared at the anomaly for a brief second before she blinked and the glow began to slowly fade. Then she looked up and saw that Mr. Ollivander had a package for her wand.

Mr. Ollivander handed the small brown package to her as he said, "I take back everything I said earlier about this being simpler than normal."

Onyx let out a laugh before saying guiltily, "Thank you Mr. Ollivander." Destroying a very kind wand makers shop was definitely not on her bucket list.

"It was a pleasure finding a wand for the Daughter of Dragons but your welcome Mrs. Woods."

With that, she gave him the 17 galleons required to pay for the item and after her Uncle waved his wand at the shop and everything went back into its right place they left the shop.

As we did so Onyx muttered to Uncle Albus, "I don't think I'm welcome in that shop again."

Uncle simply let out a laugh his blue eyes twinkling brightly at me.

Next, they walked down the road to Flourish and Blotts and while they were there Onyx quickly picked up all the spell books for each year level and class so she could read them when she was bored and wanted something to do. Then she picked out six other ones that sounded interesting called Lycanthropy by Mark Trevalis, A Complete Guide of Magical Creatures and Beings by Jade Darrow, Magic: A Guide to all Extraordinary Things by M.K. Johnson, Herbs and Plants a Guide to Plants Around the World by Anora Lewis, Special Powers of Wizards and Witches by Kelly Bell, and Dragons a Guide to Some of the Greatest Creatures the World Will Ever See by Diablo Malika. Onyx piled all the books into the caldron she bought earlier after paying then the white-haired duo continued on their way out of the shop which was definitely one of her favorites so far.

Next, they went to the Magical Menagerie. After swiftly gazing around Onyx wandered over to where the kittens and their mothers were. She gazed down at all the small balls of fur sleeping curled into their mother's sides trying to suppress the urge to bury her face in the soft mounds of fur. But one caught her attention. He was playing with a small ball of yarn in the corner batting it back and forth. Onyx approached his cage and the instant he saw her he leaned his nose against the front panel made of glass creating a perfect nose print and at that second her decision was made for her.

Onyx found a cage for him along with a big bag of cat food, a box of wet food, and a couple of bowls for his food and water. She thought about names for a minute till she finally thought of a perfect one. Chip. Walking up to the register she paid for him and was told that the little kitten she picked was part kneazle which meant he would be intensely loyal to her and helpful to all good wizards and witches and would likely live just a 'tad' bit longer than a regular house cat. Onyx happily walked out of the shop with all her stuff dragging her down a bit when suddenly everything except her wand was floating in the air.

"Frost," Onyx heard Uncle yell.

Suddenly with a sharp pop, a house elf appeared and said, "What can I do for Master Dumbledore and Mistress Woods?"

"May you please take this stuff back to Hogwarts and put it in Onyx's room." Uncle Albus said.

"Certainly," Frost said vanishing with a sharp pop Onyx looked down and saw she still had her wand, but everything else was gone.

"We are going to go meet your mother now, Onyx," Uncle said blue eyes twinkling at Onyx with a small smile on his face.
