...WHAT THE ACTUAL HECK
The sugar and rest definitely helped the group. They managed to pay for the food and a room at the hotel with two beds with money from their wristbands—uh, somehow. Hallez was pretty sure the money was mostly counterfeit, but she wasn't complaining.
At the very least, their physical states were better. Hallez had discovered angry red burn marks on the inside of her forearms, which Lavi explained was the most serious injury she had received from the crash. Which was a complete miracle, though it was mostly just another mood dampener.
"It'll take a bit to fully heal. It was almost a third degree burn, but you don't have any flesh exposed so you should be fine without proper medicine and treatment."
"You can't heal it fully?"
"I usually just hasten the healing process; I can't just magically snap my fingers and heal you instantly. That's something only possible on a godly level."
It was a shame, but...whatever. She felt fine other than an occasional sting, especially after the nap.
When the alarm clock on their wristbands went off to wake them, Hal jumped to her feet from the armchair where she had slept in, still fully dressed after yesterday in her slightly singed T-shirt, jacket and pants.
"Come on, wake up, let's go." She strode across the hotel room, past the two beds to the light switches, and mercilessly turned all of them on.
She was met with groans of complaint. And a second later, the shuffling of her contubernium slowly getting out of bed an hour before dawn.
"It's too earlyyyyy," Fiona's voice drifted from under one bed, where she slept in with her brother. They had insisted on Hallez taking one of the beds, but she firmly denied, saying that the armchair was as comfortable as the beds to her, and they were too tired to complain.
"Exactly." Hal took the pillow from the armchair and threw it at Fiona's face. "Come on. I'm going to brush my teeth. Do try to be up by the time I come back."
Thankfully, when she exited the bathroom, they were up.
"Alright, Fiona you go first, then Lavi, then Travis. I'm going to try and search for locations to travel to on the wristband."
"Wow," Fiona said, smiling at her, still groggy. "You sound more like a leader today."
"...I do?"
"Yeah. And plus, I think you are our leader now, unanimously."
This stunned her. "I..."
She couldn't get an answer out before Fiona slipped to the bathroom. So...she was the leader. That's...great. This wasn't the first time she had been in groups of people who unanimously chose her as leader. She wasn't quite sure why. She never asked or particularly wanted to be a leader. Being a leader sucked. Especially being a good leader. It's never simple, and she was usually neutral and strict, so you'd think that might prompt people to vote against her being the leader. But nope. Apparently being strict and serious all the time was something people wanted for a leader. Hal knew though that a good leader was someone who would be more empathetic. Someone who understood others better, someone who the rest of the team would feel comfortable being around. None of which applied to her. It was astounding how many times she had been proven wrong.
Either she was being stupid, or the others were.
But she didn't have the heart to tell them no. Especially since they were on a time limit. Less than three days...
She sat down on her armchair and began to carefully search on her wristband.
The nearest location she found was what looked like a snowdrift of sorts, further along the valley where the building was. It was hard to tell on the hologram, but Hal suspected that the entire place was covered with snow.
"Found anything?" Travis asked as he got back from the bathroom.
"You have eyes. But yes—a snowdrift nearby. It looks like it's going to be cold and dark, so we should get something warm to wear."
"We can quickly buy something from a thrift store nearby," Lavi suggested. "There's one right across the street."
Hallez stood up. "Well, then, what are we waiting for? Pack up and let's go."

After buying some thicker clothes, (and receiving some weird looks from the cashier and customers with their odd "cosplays") they proceeded back to the lake where they first emerged from. Hallez forced herself to focus on the road, decidedly not looking towards the airport, where it was lit up like a beacon even during the hours of the early morning. Hallez had wanted to watch a bit of the news last night, but the others stopped her, as it would inevitably attract more monsters. However, it would be a reasonable guess to assume that the police were swarming the place, trying to figure out what happened.
When they reached the lake, they all checked each other's wristbands, making sure the location was locked, then jumped in. Hallez swam to the bottom, then swiped two fingers across the accessory.
One gut-wrenching zero-G moment of transportation later, they arrived at their destination.
Hallez was spit out of a pile of freezing, soft snow, and tumbled down a small hill, getting icy white powder all over herself. When she was stopped by another snowdrift, she pushed herself up, shaking her head and wiping her face, shivering.
She heard a yelp, as Fiona tumbled into her, knocking Hal back down.
"Ack! Sorry!"
Before she could respond, Travis rolled down the hill and slammed into the duo, and again with Lavi.
It took a few moments for them to pull themselves up in the darkness, rubbing their knees and elbows and sides. Hallez looked around the snow valley, and saw the building a ways away, near the center, nestled between the mountains. The building above ground was one story, but it stretched from one side of the valley to another, about a hundred meters, or the size of a football field.
Windows lined the walls, and light shone from inside most of them. A door stood in the center.
"There it is," Hallez pointed out as the others joined her. "We get in, search the place for a staircase or an elevator or something to get down, find the Sword and Shield, and get out."
"Easier said than done," Travis muttered. He unslung his spear from its position on his back, and removed the safety cap. "I still don't like the fact that the blueprint is not in our system. What is this place?"
Fiona shrugged. "Who knows?"
They've noticed your presence. Leave, run, now.
Hallez started at the voice, perking up and looking at the sky as if she would be able to see whoever it was. She forgot it had existed. But the more alarming thing was the content, and she swung her head around. Nothing in sight looked out of the ordinary. Who had noticed them? The people in the building? Why must they run? Were they that powerful?
But something did feel wrong, and the voice had never lied before. A shot of panic ran through her. The atmosphere turned tense as Hal whirled to face the others.
Her voice came out rushed. "Run, hide, now."
Thankfully, they didn't question her, but they looked at her in confusion as they immediately scattered, and hid in the snow.
She was just about to do that herself, when a blinding light flashed in her face, coming from the direction of the building. She instinctively held her hands up to shield her face.
A loud voice, amplified by a megaphone, shouted "YOU! HANDS IN THE AIR, NOW!"
She squinted against the light, her eyes burning, and saw at least five people approaching her, surrounding her. Two held what looked suspiciously like a gun in their hands, while the other three held something else, smaller, but in a way that looked like they were familiar with using it.
"PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR, OR WE WILL OPEN FIRE!"
Virtually blinded and outnumbered by whoever these people were, Hallez wanted to say that her hands were in the air, just shielding her eyes from this blinding light. And also, it was real nice of them to threaten her with death when she's done literally nothing to them.
But in the end, she still did as the person said, thinking fast. Her hands were raised into the air next to her head, and one of the people with guns slowly walked towards her, while lowering their weapon. She could only pray that her contubernium won't be idiots and reveal themselves.
She could handle this by herself.
Before they could get too close, she quickly turned into the state of phasing or whatever, and floated out of the semicircle of people with their weapons drawn.
There was a cacophony of confused shouts, and their separate energy blobs—for the lack of a better word—moved around, fanning out in all directions to look for her.
Panic once again set in as she remembered that her friends were hidden in the snow.
Argh, she thought to herself, then focused on the energy that she inferred was holding the megaphone, as the voice came from that energy blob.
"WHERE'D SHE GO? HEY, JUST SAYING, RUNNING WON'T DO YOU ANY GOOD! IT'D BE BETTER IF YOU TURN YOURSELF IN!"
He talked too much. Hallez floated behind him, then went out of her state, and used her shield to sonic-boom him into the air.
He let out a long, almost comical scream, tumbling into the snow.
That definitely got the others' attention. They turned to her, raising their weapons. Hal held up her Ancile copy at the two with guns, and managed to knock them both off their feet from a distance. Before she could do much else, however, another person, only about two meters to her left, shot her with his device.
It wasn't a gun—she wasn't sure what it was. But when it hit her in the shoulder, it was like being electrocuted. Hot, painful volts shot through her body, and a scream was torn out of her throat. She shook uncontrollably, and lost her balance, falling onto the ground.
It wasn't long before she felt her consciousness slipping away, too.
The only good thing is that this chapter is short.
What the heck is actually happening first it wouldn't let me do bold and italicize now em dashes and ellipsis?! What's next— colons and semicolons?
I'm filing a complaint.
Just hope it doesn't go straight into the lava. /ref
Now I have to check all my other chapters—
