The Daughters of Hades
Agnes POV
Chiron's face was grim as he led me to the Big House.
'I know who your parent is.'
The words hit me as if a dagger had sliced me in half. 'What?'
'The new prophecy,' he said. 'You are the forbidden child.'
'Forbidden by who,' I muttered. 'The Queen of the Gods made my mom give birth to me.'
'By whom,' Chiron corrected. Once a teacher, always a teacher.
I rolled my eyes. 'Recite the prophecy, can you?'
Unsurprisingly, Chiron nodded. He seemed to grow older second by second as the fire reflected the light on Chiron's body.
'Month of the ghost arrive
The forbidden child will thrive
With three demigods she trust most
Conquer and befriend the ghost
The Golden Sword shall raise
Through the dangers of the endless maze
Olympus shall fight with endless pride
The virgin one will turn the tide
Golden days shall be preserved
Land destruction to the far out curved.'
I know this, of course. But I can't memorize it - that's too long for my brain to remember.
'Um... Yup, that's me,' I murmured.
'That is your prophecy.' Chiron's voice changed. I know Jason Grace told me about Chiron's language skills, but I couldn't help replying.
'Yes, I guess it is. Month of the ghosts - that's July.'
Chiron stopped speaking.
'What language is that, anyway?' I asked curiously.
'Paliá glóssa,' he said.(That's Παλιά γλώσσα for y'all translators)'An old language that was forgotten by mortals. You speak it. You belong in their underground organization.'
'What the - oh.'
A faint smile appeared on Chiron's lips. 'Yes. "What the oh."'
'You know that wasn't on purpose!' I protested.
'Chiron!' Annabeth burst in.
Chiron looked at her. 'Yes, my dear?'
'Three more campers arrived!'
Chiron straightened. 'Three?'
'Yes!' Annabeth replied. 'Someone needs to go meet them!'
'I'll go,' I said.
Annabeth thought for a while. 'Alright. It's Rhinestone, Blossom and Rysa. You'd better go quickly.'
Rysa! My heart raced. I sprinted out to the courtyard.
Rysa! I yelled in my mind. Rysa!
Rysa looked at me. Joy crossed her face for a second then she quickly hid it.
'Um... Hi, Rhinestone, Blossom and Rysa. Welcome to Camp Half-Blood!' I told them.
'She's not Blossom,' Rhinestone stated. 'She's Pocahontas.'
Blossom laughed. 'That's what she calls me.'
'Where's my brother?' Rysa wanted to know.
'Your? - oh, yeah, Percy. He's probably in the lake.'
'Great,' Rysa grinned. 'I'll beat him up for calling me Jackson.'
'Well, then shut up, Jackson,' I said, which won a punch in my arm.
She ran to the lake, yelling. 'Yo! Percy! Where are you?'
Rhinestone stared at Rysa. 'You know her too?'
'Of course. Rysa Jackson's my best friend.'
Pocahontas, a.k.a. Blossom, smiled. 'Agnes, right? She told us quite a lot of things about you.'
'You know the Greek and Roman gods are real, right?' I asked.
Rhinestone nodded. 'Yep.'
'Do you know your godly parent?' I continued.
'Well... No.'
I led them to the Hestia's hearth. If you're asking me how did I know it was there, well, I did run across that.
'So what did -' I started to ask, but Nico came out of the Hades cabin along with Hazel.
He looked at the twins, showing confusion.
Percy and Rysa raced to us. 'Daughters of Hades,' she whispered in my ear. 'Don't ask me how I know. I just do.'
Typical of her. I thought I was the one who was blessed by the gods. Does being a daughter of Poseidon have any special powers I don't know?
A girl came out of the Hades cabin. 'I'll take over if you have any trouble,' she said sweetly.
Hazel smiled at me. 'Aly Orio. Daughter of Thanatos, but they haven't built his cabin yet so she shares with us.'
'Aly?' Jack from the Hephaestus cabin said. I know his parentage and name because just then, Leo Valdez poured a bowl of water over him and lit his hands on fire, evaporating the water. 'I set fireeeeeeee to the rain!' he sang as a grumpy Nyssa took a radio and blared one of Adele's hits. 'Jack, ma bro, sing along!' he yelled.
'Shut up Leo,' Aly said. 'Agnes, if you're struggling, I can help. Percy, drop that silly ball of water unless you want my dad here. Jack, I appreciate your concern, but I don't think now would be a good time showing your displays of affection.'
Jack sighed wistfully. 'So hot...'
'Quiet, male,' I snapped. 'Aly, go on. I heard you have experience.'
Aly laughed. 'I do. C'mere, twins, I lead you around camp as a tour...'
Her voice drifted off as she led Rhinestone and Blossom away.
'Get into the Hermes cabin,' Annabeth advised. 'It's where the unclaimed people go.'
I brought my stuff in and took a nap at the Hermes cabin, hoping they won't be as annoying as the Mercury kids before they boycotted me.
'Wake up,' Ruth said. 'I repeat, Hermes cabin to Agnes. It's breakfast.'
It's been a week since I got here and I still haven't been claimed. I mean... Athena, really?
You know why, a voice said in my brain.
No, I don't, I thought back.
Zeus is having a temper because he lost his shoe.
What, now? I asked.
I will claim you, Athena promised me. I will claim you at the campfire.
Fine.
How did I do that, don't ask me. The Olympians just love to invade my mind.
We sang and stuff, and the Apollo cabin, once again, were quite impressed with my singing.
Rhinestone sat on a log, playing with some kind of card game - isn't that Mythomagic? Cool. I'll get Hermes to steal my brother Hayden's cards one day. Blossom was holding hands with Aly, laughing as she sang Colors of The Wind. Rysa was grinning with Percy, while slapping his face as Annabeth gave her a thumbs-up -
'Look!' someone shouted - Jesse, if I'm right.
I was. Soon everyone was looking at me.
I looked up. Blazing on top of my head is a gray owl - a symbol of Athena.
Thanks Athena, the Hermes cabin was getting at little stuffy.
What? came Hermes's voice, sounding mildly offended.
You heard me.
'Hail, Agnes, daughter of Athena, Lady of Owls, goddess of wisdom, creator of the olives.' Annabeth bowed down. Thanks to Mom's blessing, I heard what Annabeth said under her breath. 'And my sister.'
The campers followed her as a familiar hunting horn blew.
'The Hunt,' I said.
Annabeth stood up in surprise. 'How did you know?'
I shrugged. 'Long story.'
'I'm guessing they tried to recruit you?' she asked.
'Yeah,' I answered warily. 'Kind of like that.'
An auburn haired girl, about twelve, stepped into Camp Half-Blood along with others Hunters. They either grinned at me, waved or winked at me as they filed in. Or in Thalia's case, ran and hugged me and Annabeth.
'Agnes! Long time no see, girl!' she said. 'When I last saw you, you were - what? - nine years old!'
'I wasn't that young,' I countered. 'I think I was, like eleven.'
She smiled. 'One year, then.'
'Yep, one.'
The auburn haired girl which I knew was Artemis went up to me. Chiron tensed.
She smiled faintly and beckoned me. 'Come, Agnes, to Cabin Eight.'
Then she hugged me tightly, which was extremely unusual for her and sobbed.
I patted her back as I hugged back. I could hear the gasps and felt the stares of the campers but I didn't care. I am the daughter of Artemis, and I have the right to comfort her when needed.
