Chapter 7.2: The Split
"Come, let's take a seat. I assume we are capable of having peaceful conversation over food." He speaks softly, moving forward. His gaze fixed on her weapon. "I chose this hotel for the event because I heard that they serve really good, authentic Mexican cuisine." He motions to touch her elbow.
"Don't you dare." She growls, shifting in her thick accented voice.
"Hai, hai." He takes back his hand from touching her.
They both sit, facing each other. Louise keeps her weapon close to her side. She watches Ojiro with a wary look while he serves himself a slice of quesadilla.
"Go ahead, eat some. It's not poisoned." He gets a piece and takes a bite. "See?"
But Louise almost jumps from her seat when he coughs so wildly, he looks like he's about to die. "T-this one's damn spicy."
"Jesus! Now, you're just letting yourself get killed!" She grabs a jug of cold water beside her and makes him drink straight from it. "Are you alright?"
"D-daijoubu desu. I'm alright." He chokes a little, his eyes are watering.
Lousie eyes him. Maybe he really means no harm. I mean, what kind of a serial killer would choke on his own quesadilla?
"If you just want to talk, you should have just messaged me, you know? Saves time and your life." She shrugs. She takes a bite out of her quesadilla and nods in approval.
"You're not replying."
"Oh." She pauses a moment. "Well, then you should have just called."
"Your friend's the one picking up the call."
She bit her lip. Damn clever guy.
"I'm really sorry for freaking you out earlier." He looks up from the food he's poking with his fork. "It was just... this is the only way that I know to get in touch with you."
"Fine! What the hell do you want to talk to me so bad, anyway?"
"Ahm, I..." He stutters
She blinks at him impatiently.
"I..." he huffs nervously.
"Good Lord, Ojiro Korishima, just talk." She blurts, swallowing a thick slice of the quesadilla.
"I just want to ask if...if you have free time, after work this weekend?"
"See? Just be quick to answer. I really don't have the patience. And why do you ask if I have free time this weekend?"
Ojiro fell silent. And Louise's one brain cell takes a moment to register process what he really meant.
Did he just ask me out?
"You know what? You're right, the food here is damn good I can finally come over." She serves herself more tortillas and eats in huge bites.
"Please go on a date with Louise." he finally spells out.
"Shut up for a minute Ojiro, I'm trying to think here." She muttered, continuing to eat anxiously.
"Please go out with me." He interrupts again in the middle of her chugging down the beer.
She opens her mouth preparing herself to snap at him again but she calms down.
"You do know that we had just met, right?"
"Hai. Yes."
"Well, it doesn't really make sense you know. I hit you a kendama in the eye. And then suddenly you're interested?"
Ojiro laughs at the memory. "Hai. Yes. Looks like that's what happened."
"Oh, just snap out of it. Come on, I'll try to hit the other eye. Maybe that will do the trick and help you realize what tragedy you're getting into."
Ojiro shakes his head, laughing at the silliness. "I'm serious alright? Do you really think I'll set this all up as a prank?"
Louise falls silent. This is just one of the rare occasions where she shuts up. This is when life finally hits her with reality. The guy literally went to all the trouble of serving her Mexican food and making sure she came to the event. All those so he can meet him for this.
"I can't say yes now, don't worry. No Pressure. Well, it's better if we can decide of the meet up place now though, but really, you can take your time."
"Hold your horses, chico, boy. Of course I need to think about it. What do you think of me? Easy as the girls from Roppongi? I don't even know you!" She exclaims. She can't help but feel nervous.
If a guy this hot asks you out, do you think you can still manage to think straight? She asks herself, but the Sane voice behind her head is silent. Her mind is blank.
"But that's the point of it, right? You go out with someone to know them better."
She opens her mouth to argue but stops. This guy's clever mouth is getting to my nerves.
"We can grab some coffee."
Don't mention the tequila.
"...or get a tequila shot."
There! Of course! He really did his assignment.
"Do you think I'll say yes to you that easily? You haven't even done anything to impress me." She snaps, even though the smell of salsa and the mention of tequila has made her weak on the knees.
Not to mention his cold stares. Why do I even find that hot?
"You mean, you'll say yes right now if I do anything impressive?" His voice is full of hope.
"Fine! But I doubt you could do that."
"Anything?"
"Are you deaf or what? Yes, anything!" She doesn't really know what she's saying. She's just making everything up.
"You dance, you split, you do acrobatics just like what you do on ice, I don't care—"
She heard a 'bang' and suddenly, he's there on the floor in a perfect split. She almost falls on her seat in surprise.
"What the hell, Ojiro?" She breaths. "Get up!"
"Are you going to say yes now?"
"F-fine!"
"Hontou?! Really?!"
"Yes, I'll go out on a date with you, Ojiro Korishima." She closed her eyes in horror from what she had witnessed. "Just get the hell up!"
"Yatta!" He raises a fisted hand happily, like a winner.
"Yatta." She mimics him sarcastically.
"Get up now, Dios mios. My God. We're not even going out yet and you're already giving me anxiety." She helps him get up only to be interrupted by a screech. A sound like a cloth being ripped in half.
A pause, and then their eyes met.
"Yeah, that's my pants." He forces a smile.
He clears his throat and casually adds, trying to keep his cool.
Clearing his throat, Ojiro puts his hands on his hips, standing confidently. "Pick you up on Friday, six pm. What do you think?"
Louise's eyes go down at the huge hole in the middle of his pants, created by the split he did.
