Chapter Two

Victoria finally made it to the church and sat on the steps. Grabbing her guitar, she left her case open for change. When she was sure she had enough for a taxi, she headed into the church. It was quite empty and very quiet; she wasn't used to it after being outside with the city noise.

"Hello?" She called out. "Is anybody here?"

"Ah, yes. Hello, dear. How may I be of help?" An old man asked as he walked into the service hall.

"I was hoping that I could use your phone to call a taxi," Victoria stated, hesitating ever so slightly. There was something about the old priest that gave her the willies.

"Of course, of course. If you'll follow me, I can show you where it is." He answered with a knowing smile.

He turned around and started back down the hall he had emerged from. Following him uncertainly, Victoria looked around the hall as they walked. The hall was maybe 15 feet long and had doors lining the walls on both sides. She couldn't help but wonder what those doors hid. Coming to a stop, she realized they were in front of the door at the end of the hall.

"There you are, dear. If you go." He directed.

"You're not coming in?" Victoria asked, starting to feel uneasy.

"Oh, I could, but I figure you'd want the privacy. Go on, then." The old man urged.

Taking a deep breath, she opened the door and came face to face with a plain office. She walked in and allowed the door to close behind her as she looked around. There was a large oak desk in the middle of the room with a comfy-looking chair behind it. On the left of the office, there were bookshelves filled with scripture. There was a large window looking out into the gardens to her right.

Approaching the desk, she reached for the phone. She dialed for the Greensburg Taxi Company and sat in the chair behind the desk. With the phone ringing in her ears, she hadn't noticed the click of the lock on the door. When no one answered, she tried again. She tried dialing two other companies, but each time, the phone refused to be answered.

Becoming frustrated, she walked to the door to go find the priest so she could tell him that no one was answering. To her dismay, the doorknob wouldn't turn. Thinking it was merely stuck, she tugged on it a little more. Each time I became a little more frantic, she started banging on the door.

"Hello?!" She called out. "Is anybody out there? Can anyone hear me? I can't open the door!"

She kept yelling out, hoping someone would come unstuck the door. She even tried kicking it down, but nothing worked. Looking at the clock on the wall above the door, she realized she had been in the room for two hours. Victoria started pacing back and forth before the window. She was trying to come to terms with the fact that this was the beginning of her end.

After another thirty minutes had come and gone, she started searching for the room. From what she wasn't sure, but at that point with only 6 hours of the day left. She was determined to find something that would get her out of that room. Finally, she found a letter opener, it wasn't much, but it was something.

She walked over to the door and put her ear to it. All she heard was dead silence, so she started to work on the lock. Suddenly, she heard loud thundering footsteps. She hid the letter opener in her clothes and sat on the desk, kicking her legs back and forth as she waited.

When she heard the lock click, she was all at once scared and relieved. She was scared because she had no idea what was on the other side of that door. Relieved because if she could get past whoever was there, she would be free from that church. Slowly, she got off the desk as the door opened. Letting out a breath that she hadn't realized she was holding, she watched as her parents walked into the room.

"Oh my goodness, Victoria, it is you!" Her mother, Mandy, cried out in relief.

"I thought Father Marshall was mistaken when he called and said he had you!" Her father, Damien, sighed as he crushed her to his chest.

"Are you kidding me?? I thought I was done for when I realized I was locked in here! What was that old man thinking?" She argued.

Releasing her, Damien sighed. "We've been going to different churches, hoping they could help us find you before today came around." He countered.

Mandy sniffled as she wrapped her arms around her daughter. "We were terrified that we weren't going to get to see you again before today."

"I'm so sorry, Mom and Dad," Victoria whispered sullenly. "I thought that if I randomly showed up before now, you wouldn't want to see me."

"Not want to see you?" Her father exclaimed. "You're our daughter, and we love you. You know we never meant to drive you away like that."

Sniffling once more, her mother spoke up. "Let's get you home, yes? I made your favorite pie today in hopes that we would find you before it was too late."

"I would love that." Victoria smiled.

They walked out of the church and piled into the car. Hearing the engine turn on, Victoria could have sworn someone or something was staring at her. Shaking it off, she settled into the backseat and waited for them to arrive at her childhood home.
