Chapter Five

Opening her eyes groggily, Victoria looked around, trying to remember where she was. She jumped to her feet, looking around the room of the abandoned house. She should have died last night. How is she still alive?

The light was shining through the window closest to her. Peering out, she saw that everything looked normal. Nothing major changed from yesterday to now, except that she was still alive.

Feeling safe enough to venture away from the house she was in, she left. Once she was out, she started walking back to the park, even though it was probably a bad idea. Once she got there, she made her way back to her meadow, glancing behind herself often.

Creeping up behind a tree, she peeked out into the field. The coast was clear, so she walked forward to get her duffel bag. She squinted as something on the ground was blindingly bright. She realized it was a silvery substance pooled together under a raggedy black robe.

It was the robe her reaper was wearing. There's no way she killed it, especially not with a letter opener. She wasn't quite sure what to do; dumping out her duffel bag, she searched for something to collect some of the liquid. Finding an empty water bottle, she dipped it into the pool of silver and screwed the cap back on.

She stared in shock as the liquid ate through the plastic, spilling out onto her feet. It burnt, she screamed, but no one came to her aide. She fell to her knees, crying as she went. Falling forward, she holds her arms out to protect her body and face. Landing upon the robe, the pain intensified and her screams got louder. This was the worst pain she had ever felt in her life.

Looking down at her hands, she watched as her skin boiled and started changing. Cringing, she looked down to her feet and saw nothing but her bones. Slowly the pain got worse and worse, showing no signs of stopping. She felt her spine break and watched as her hair turned to silver.

Her skin kept boiling; it spread from her hand to the rest of her body. Contorting into different positions as her body broke and reshaped itself. She was crying as her skin became taut against her muscles and bones, ripping in some places. She was crying out as talons erupted from her fingertips. She was gasping in pain as she lost her teeth and cut her lips with the new ones.

Finally, as the process became complete, she stood. Looking down, she could still see the bones of her feet, but she laughed. Glancing around, she noticed that she had grown in height. Realizing her nakedness, she pulled on the robe.

She left the clearing, forgetting about her belongings, for they were no longer hers. Walking along, she found who she was meant to be, her parents. However, she was no longer Victoria; she was yet another reaper with no name. Her parents gazed upon her and screamed in terror.

They were recognizing her as what was once their daughter—realizing why their death days were the day after hers. The reason they were to die on the same day as each other. Today was the day that they learned why no matter what, no one survived their death day. They died or reap. Take your pick. Either way, you will never be you again.
