Chapter 4
Lila stood with Mira pouring a drink into a mug before placing it on an empty tray before moving on to the next drink. She couldn't help but overhear conversations among men and the girls that were serving them.
"There's someone staring at you." Lila couldn't help but smile when she felt Mira's bony elbow in her side, glancing at her friend before looking up to the sea of men and women. "Near the painting that was sent by Tal."
It was just a mere sunset painting that Mira was talking about. Though, it wasn't descriptive enough since it was still a table full of guys underneath the painting. "Real helpful Mira," Lila told her while shaking the metal container that held a mixture of liquids.
"I'm trying to be discreet," she whispered before glancing over at the table again. "Ok, blonde hair and blue eyes. Before you say anything, they are like a sky blue. Like sunny day, no cloud in the sky, type of blue."
Rolling her eyes, Lila poured the drink into a glass and glanced over as she placed the glass on a tray. Just like Mira said, there was a guy that fit the description, who made eye contact with Lila. He gave a small smile to her, quickly glancing at his friends before looking back at her.
"Faye," Mira hissed to the girl that came from the table to get the newly filled tray. "Trade places with Lila."
Faye glanced at Lila before looking back at the table she came from. She too noticed the guy watching the three of them. "You know what, I'll take a few minutes of making drinks." She smiled, joining Mira behind the counter as Lila got pushed out.
"What do I even do?" Lila hissed at them, gripping the tray tightly before leaving the safety of the bar counter. "Can't exactly call him out for staring at me."
"Just give that lovely, Lila smile and return back here. Maybe add something about coming to you if they need anything." Faye told her as Mira gently pushed Lila towards the table.
Lila whipped her normal smile on her face as she approached the table, replacing the empty glasses with the newly made drinks on the table. "Just let me know if you guys need anything else." She couldn't help but stare at the man that brought her over, getting lost in his eyes. Mira was right, they did remind Lila of a sunny day outside.
"And what's your name?" The guy asked her, wearing a charming smile.
"Lila."
Lila picked at her nails, occasionally glancing at Hisoka who seemed to be enthralled by the orb that held what he wanted to see. She shook her head, refocusing her attention on the chipping nail polish.
"Who was he?" Lila jumped at Hisoka's voice. She didn't realize that he was done with what he was seeing. She should've known that though since Lila had specifically chosen a quick memory. Something to get this all done and over with. Hopefully, she wouldn't have to see this man again once this whole thing is over.
"A mistake." She quietly mumbled, dropping her hands and focusing her attention on the pillows. Lila wished she knew what she knew now back then. Maybe she wouldn't have that disgust towards all the men or the excitement whenever given the chance to leave the building.
Maybe she wouldn't have this hatred towards the idea of love. She wouldn't despise the girl who asked to see her potential soulmate.
"Do tell. I love a good story."
Lila shook her head while climbing to her feet. Hisoka's voice lingered in her ears. "If you enjoy seeing our misery so much, ask another girl to see who broke her." Lila spat out before leaving the private room. She didn't spare him a second glance as she walked through the beads and further down the hallway.
Lila hugged herself as she made her way out of the building and further down the alleyway. She pushed past a door that was their home, ignoring the other girls that were in the living room. Running up the steps, Lila didn't stop walking until she got to the safety of her room, locking the door behind her.
She knew the memory she showed to Hisoka all too well. Lila knew the very moment she made eye contact with that guy, she was hooked. Lila was lost and the ideology Nana was trying to drive into Lila's head was out the window.
'Those god damn eyes,' Lila thought to herself as she slid down the door and settled on the floor. Those stupid eyes hooked her and the innocent smile that reeled her in.
Lila squeezed her eyes shut, trying to imagine something else. Her parents were always the go-to. Her mother's smile and her father's laughter. Lila would always touch every finger to her thumb individually and repetitively. It made it easier to control what others saw, that including herself.
This time, it was different. In the memory of her parents, their eyes weren't what she had always pictured them to be. They were honey-yellow, and instead of being wide and full of emotions, they were narrow. Like they were focused on something.
Lila snapped her eyes open, the memory disappearing from her view. She took deep breaths in an attempt to calm herself, drifting her attention to the window. It was dark outside, and Lila was sure that it was still daylight when she had left the work building.
"We just want to make sure she's alright," a muffled voice came from outside of the door. "The others were saying that she hurried through without a word, and you have multiple bottles in your hands."
"Aren't you a mother?"
"Look, my husband agreed to assume the caretaker role for the evening while I comfort Lila. I promise to send her to you guys when she's feeling better." Lila easily picked out Mira's voice, so she could only assume that Yasu and Saki were outside her door as well. "I think something happened at work earlier. I know you two mean well, but this is something that-"
"Requires someone who was there from the start?" There was a moment of silence outside the door. "C'mon. Promise to send her down to us when she's better?" More silence followed by a knock on the door.
Lila pushed herself off the floor and to her feet, unlocking the door before opening it a crack to see Mira standing out there. She wore a weak smile while holding up the bottles of alcohol. Lila opened the door a little wider before returning the smile.
"So," Mira drawled out as Lila closed the door behind her and locked it. "What to tell me what happened?" Mira sat down on the floor, leaning against the bed. She watched as Lila took a spot next to her, taking the already open bottle and opening it before taking a sip.
"Well, the client, Hisoka, wanted to see why I hated the men we serve so much," Lila mumbled, tracing the lip of the bottle with her finger. "I ended up showing him," She explained before taking another sip from the bottle. "And that stupid memory."
Mira didn't say a thing as she wrapped an arm around Lila's shoulders, pulling her friend closer to her. She rested her head against Lila's, feeling a weight on her shoulder from the sudden action.
The two girls sat there in silence, sharing the bottles of alcohol between them. There weren't many words shared between them, but it was fine with the two of them. With a topic like such, there weren't many words could do to ease the situation.
