Chapter 15
Lila gripped a glass tightly, glancing from the liquid in it to Mira. It was easy to tell everything to Mira first. Well, the part of Lila leaving with Hisoka at least.
Lila intended to keep parts of the conversation with Nana private. Plus, it could always be there for future purposes.
Mira sat across from Lila, lips pursued as she processed what she was just told. "After all these years, you're finally leaving?"
Lila nodded her head. "I haven't told Yasu and Saki yet."
"Well, that'll be a difficult conversation."
Lila snapped her head up, surprised to see Mira smiling at her. "You're not mad or upset?"
This caused Mira's face to fall. "Why would I be upset? I mean sure, I always thought I would be there with you, kissing this place goodbye, but," her voice trailed off. "Lila, you're my best friend. It might be mom instincts, but I'm happy for you. I'm proud of you."
Lila rolled her eyes, smiling as she brought the glass up to her lips for a sip. The two sat in silence a little longer before it was broken again.
"Do you think all of this would be different if it wasn't for him?" Mira asked Lila. "Like, do you think you would be going against Nana and leaving?"
Lila paused before shrugging her shoulders. "I mean, I always wanted to leave. I knew I'd leave at some point, at least that's what I always hoped for."
"I know what Nana has always said about the men that entered here, but not all of them are horrible." Mira sighed, resting her chin in her hand. "There's my husband, Saki had her little Prince Charming, and you got Hisoka."
Lila raised an eyebrow at Mira. "What do you-"
"Don't argue with me, just accept it. I mean, you just told me that you're going with him for this Hunters exam." Mira smiled at her friend. "Small part of you has to trust him to do that. I trust him as well. Plus, you don't seem as tense or bitter since he's been coming here."
Lila stared at Mira dumbfounded before grumbling a few choice words, downing the rest of her drink. "I have to go tell Saki and Yasu."
Mira only nodded her head, raising her glass to Lila's back.
In the housing building, only full-time workers had their personal rooms. Girls that were still in their training had to share their rooms. Lila was fortunate during her time that she shared her space with Mira.
Yasu and Saki had that same luck since the two have been sharing a room since they started their training.
Lila sighed before knocking on the door with their names, walking in when one of them responded with "enter".
"I need to tell you two something," Lila told the two, leaning against the door as the two girls seemed to be finishing getting ready for bed.
Lila made her way to Saki's bed, the neater one of the two, and sat down to face Yasu's bed. Yasu had sat down across from her, Saki sitting beside Yasu. Both girls seemed to be worried as they anxiously waited to hear what Lila had to say.
"Tomorrow morning, I'm leaving." Lila rubbed the fabric of her skirt as she looked between the two girls. "I'm going with Hisoka to take the Hunters Exam."
A beat of silence passed before being broken by Saki. "And if you pass, you'll be protected?"
Lila nodded her head. "I'll get a license, and it should protect me from everyone out there." She glanced to Yasu, concerned by the lack of words from her. "Yasu?"
"You said Hisoka will be with you?" Yasu clenched her hands into fists, keeping her eyes trained on her lap.
"He'll be there." She confirmed before moving to kneel on the floor. "Depending on how it all goes, I might recommend it to you two."
That had caused Yasu to look up to Lila, confused by her words.
"I mean, we always said that I would train you two when I could finally be a mentor. It would make sense that you two would be the first ones I would want to follow in my footsteps."
A small smile was on Lila's face, her heart slowly breaking as tears seemed to be falling down Yasu's face. "We'll be the first ones." She agreed before leaning down to hug Lila. Saki followed the lead, the three girls having a small group hug.
"I always liked having Hisoka around," Saki commented as they slowly peeled away from one another. "It was like having Bancho around all the time."
"But better," Yasu added, getting comfortable on her bed. "I mean, the thing he did with the card."
Lila rolled her eyes, purposefully getting on Yasu's bed and opening her arms for both girls to enter her embrace. "We'll have to keep that between the three of us."
Small chuckled erupted from the other two as Lila blew out the candle, putting the room in darkness. "Are you scared?" Saki asked.
Lila stared at the ceiling. It was slowly hitting her that she would be leaving her home for so long. The same place that has been protecting her all these years. The people who helped protect her as well.
"I'm terrified," Lila admitted while running her fingers through the girls' hair. "Absolutely terrified. I've been living a routine for so long and tomorrow it'll be something completely new."
There was also the part of being far from somewhere safe. Yes, Lila knew Hisoka would be there and found it rather unbelievable that he would just leave her to fend for herself, but that still was a lingering thought.
Another being what would happen if someone figured her out. Would she be disqualified from the exam? Or would someone toss her to the mafia to be sold for mountains upon mountains of money?
"If you think about it," Saki's voice disrupted Lila's thoughts. "You could be making history for our kind."
"Ok, let's not get ahead of ourselves." Lila chuckled, face heating up as she thought about that idea. It was almost embarrassing the more it lingered in her head.
Just when she thought the two were asleep, meaning that the topic was dropped, Lila was proven wrong. "I think it's cool," Yasu mumbled. "I think it would be cool to say that you were my mentor and did this history-changing thing."
That had to be the breaking point for Lila. She truly wished she could just cover her face or maybe scream in a pillow.
"Ok! Time for you two to go to sleep!" She announced, deciding that she should go to her room if Lila planned on getting some sleep.
"Wait!" Both girls cried out as Lila started to climb off the bed
"Could we spend the night in your room?"
It was hardly an effort, but Lila still caved in and ushered them to her room. The three of them piled on Lila's bed, Yasu and Saki sound asleep while Lila laid wide awake. It felt impossible to fall asleep now since all she could think about was finally leaving. She tried to imagine what would be the first thing she and Hisoka would do tomorrow, aside from starting their travel to wherever the exam would be held. Her mind came up empty.
"Lila," she was startled a bit when hearing Yasu's voice. Lila glanced down at the girl, silently acknowledging her. "When the time comes that Saki and I are able to enter our mentorships, you'll take us, right? Wherever you are out there, you'll train us with everything you learned while out there?"
Lila licked her lips, squeezing Yasu closer to her and kissing the top of her head. "I wouldn't have it any other way." She mumbled, rubbing the younger girl in a comforting manner as she closed her eyes in an attempt to get some sleep.
