Chapter Seven - Extra Hands in the Fire House

The favor once again involved Buck driving the three of them somewhere because of Chris but this time, it made Kayla nervous. They were going to a hospital. Walking out of the elevator, all three in their LAFD shirts and pants, Eddie leads the way into the waiting room. "My aunt." He points out when he sees her. "Tía. ¿ Qué pasó? Is Christopher okay?" He asks, walking over to the woman as she gets off the chair. They hug as she smiles, "You mean prince charming, hmm? He's peachy." She says directing her hand to where Christopher is.

They look over to see Christopher charming up the nurses and it brings a smile to Kayla's face, that kid does not know a stranger. "It's your abuela. She broke her hip." Tía says and it catches Eddie by surprise. "What? How?" His eyes are full of concern when asking about his abuela.

"She was out back on the steps and calling him to come inside. She lost her balance. Christopher called 911. The rescue got there really quick." She explains but it doesn't help to settle Eddie. "I wanna see her"

"No, she's sleeping now." She turns to look at Kayla and Buck, "And, uh, who are they?" She asks. "This is Buck and Kayla. We work together."

"Mm. I thought you just dressed alike." Kayla smiles at the comment, Tía is kinda funny. "This is my Aunt Josefina. Pepa." He says, introducing her to them. "Hi." Buck says but Kayla reaches her hand out, "Hi, Josefina is a very beautiful name." Tía shakes her hand but not before giving her a look over. Kayla looks at Eddie worried, "Tía, don't scare her." He pleads and the woman turns to him.

"You can't keep doing this, Eddie. You cannot keep leaving him with her. She's not up to it."

"I know. I know, and I'm sorry. I...I'm just trying to find some permanent help, it's just...too many forms to fill out. It's worse than the V.A." Kayla looks at Buck and from the look in his eye, they have the same idea.

"I can't believe your-" Her eyes widened at Tía's words, "ex stuck you with all of this." Eddie looks at his aunt shocked, "I'm not stuck, Tía." She doesn't believe his words, "Do you have to go back to work? Ah. And you're not stuck. I'll keep him tonight, but you need to get this figured out." She stresses to him.

"Daddy!" Chris says when he sees his father, he smiles softly at his song as he walks over to him. Kayla and Buck watch in awe at how Eddie is with Chris, "Must be rough." Buck says, "Raising any child alone is rough. My nephew is a saint. But I pray for him anyway." Tía says and Kayla feels her heart squeeze. You can tell how much Tía loves her family, "That's all you can do." Kayla says, looking at the older woman.

"So, you're a firefighter too?" Tía asks, looking at her with a kind smile which she returns. "Have been since I turned 18, never regretted it for a second." Tía doesn't say anything, just looks at the girl. Looks at how she watches Chris and Eddie, a knowing glimmer in her eye.

"Kiki!" Christopher says when he sees her. "Hey bud, how's your day been?" She asks as she kneels down to get eye level with him as he walks over. He hugs her as he laughs, "It's been good. Do I get to hang out with you, Buck, and dad?" He asks, she looks up at Eddie for the answer.

"Until Tía gets off work, yes you're gonna be with me, Buck, and Kayla." He says, his voice a little hesitant, probably scared of making Bobby upset if he brings Chris to the firehouse. "Cool." Chris says as Kayla stands up again. Eddie and Chris say goodbye to Tía and so does Buck and Kayla. The four walk away and head to Buck's jeep so they can get back to the station.

It doesn't take long for Christopher to win over the team. His laughter, smile, and innocent outlook on life is one many admire because this kid is just sunshine and happiness in a bottle. You can't help but love the kid. "I do this too much?" Chimney asks as he makes a talking motion with his hand. Everyone laugh after Christopher roasted him, "We all agree, believe me." Buck says, trying to talk while laughing so hard.

Hen, Eddie, Christopher, and Kayla are on the couch while Chimney and Buck sit next to them on the arms of the chair. The young boy's laugh melts Kayla's heart as she laughs with everyone, "Christopher, I thought we were buddies." Chimney says, faking upset as Bobby walks over. "What's this?" He asks with a smile, but Kayla notices how quickly Eddie's melts on his face when he sees Bobby, he looks terrified. "I don't remember asking the chief for reinforcements. You any good with a hose, kid?"

"I can try." He answers innocently, making her wanna just put him in her pocket to protect him from the scary and mean world. Eddie gets off the couch and Kayla puts her arm where his was, "So sorry, Cap. My aunt's trying to get off work early, but until then, I...I didn't know where to take him."

"Yeah, you did. Right here. Buck gave me a heads-up. I already cleared it with the chief." A second later, the alarm rings. "All right, let's go, let's go." Bobby says as everyone gets off the seats and starts to head for their gear and the trucks. Once suited up, Kayla climbs into the truck and helps Eddie get Christopher in. The three sit across from Hen and Chimney while Buck sits up front with Cap, who's driving.

"These are great, see, 'cause we can talk to each other. Though sometimes I wish I had a mute button for Buck." Chimney jokes while explaining the headphones to Chris. Buck honks the truck's horn in retaliation, "Oh, I'm sorry, were you saying something?" He asks with a smirk while looking back to Chimney.

Kayla laughs to herself as she rolls her eyes. "You have a scar on your head." Christopher says, pointing to the faded but still noticeable scar on Chim's forehead. "That's very observant, kid. I had an accident. Got a big metal rod stuck in my head, but the doctor took care of it. You ever have surgery?"

"Two times."

"Actually, three times." Eddie chuckles and it makes Kayla's heart flutter. "Well, you got me beat. Now I feel kinda lame." Chimney says, giving the perfect opening for Hen and Kayla. "Because you are." They say in unison then high five, causing Chris to laugh which causes everyone to laugh as well.

"Your dad ever tell you why we call him Chimney?" Hen asks, leaning over a bit to get eye level with Chris. Chimney quickly shakes his head as Kayla laughs. "I'll tell you the story later." She assures him, "You really wanna traumatize a seven year old, Hen?" Kayla jokes as Christopher smiles at the girl.

The truck soon pulls up to a car accident and everyone gets out. Chris stays with Cap while everyone works on helping people. Eddie grabs the jaws of life to help Buck and Kayla get the woman out of her car.

After the call, they're back at the firehouse. Chris hangs out with Chimney playing the pinball machine and Cap cooks him a grilled cheese. Hen and Chimney are up top helping Chris down the firepole as Eddie, Kayla, and Buck help him when he gets down to them.

"You did awesome, bud!" Kayla says, hugging him as he laughs. Pepa walks between the firetrucks and sees Christopher smiling brightly as Kayla lets him out of the hug and his dad pulls him into his arms. "All right, fun's over." Eddie says as Pepa walks over. Everyone says goodbye as Eddie takes his son over to his tía.

"Good job today, kiddo." Bobby says, "You, too, Cap." Christopher giggles out. "Bye, Chris! Come back and see us soon!" Kayla says, smiling happily. "Can't leave you too long, princess." Buck nudges Kayla as she laughs.

Everyone watches him leave then looks at Eddie as he walks over to Bobby and hugs him. Kayla and Buck look at each other as he goes to catch up with Pepa and Chris, he needs as much help as he can get.

That night, Kayla is hanging out with Buck and Maddie at their place which is really Abby's but she doesn't care. Maddie opens up a bottle of wine as they explain to her the whole situation with Eddie and Christopher.

"I just feel bad for him, you know? Eddie, I mean. Not Christopher. Christopher's great. He's smart, adorable."

"And don't forget charming, he knows how to win hearts." Kayla says, interrupting Buck with a smirk. "He just needs a little help." Buck says, finishing his thought. "Cerebral palsy, right?" Maddie asks, her nursing mind going to work. "Aunt Pepa said he got stuck in the birth canal which led to some complications." explains Kayla as she grabs her glass of wine and hops up to sit on the counter.

"Well, did Aunt Pepa explain what's happening with the child care situation? Because there are programs."

"Eddie's working on it. He's got insurance. And there's other stuff though the city, state, and county but the requirements are all different." Buck says, "Says it's worse than the V.A. which is saying something because that mess is awful." The Buckley siblings look at Kayla confused as to how she knows so much. "What? My dad served in Desert Storm and my grandad was in Vietnam. I've heard more about the V.A. than I ever wanted to." She takes a sip of her wine before continuing Buck's thought.

"As Buck was saying, You can apply for one program, and it can disqualify you from another. It's bureaucratic bullshit."

"I was a nurse, remember? The only people who truly navigate a bureaucracy are the people who work inside it." Maddie says and Kayla gives her a thumbs up in agreement, still enjoying her wine.

"It shouldn't be that way, though — Eddie, always wondering how to take care of Christopher, and Chirstopher feeling like a burden on his dad." Buck takes the food he made into the living room, both girls follow.

"Eddie doesn't feel that way, does he?" Maddie asks, leaning against the door frame. "Nope, he loves that kid more than life itself. He wants what's best for him as any good father should." Kayla sits in the middle of the couch and Maddie sits next to her.

"He, uh, loves that kid like crazy. He's a really great dad." Buck comments before taking a bite of his food. "So it seems you both have a crush on Eddie. Does that mean you're ready to move on, Buck?" Kayla chokes on her wine at the comments as Buck laughs.

"I have some news. I found an apartment. It's not far from work. Two bedrooms, secure building. Parking included."

"So you're moving out?" Buck asks and that's Kayla's cue to leave the room. She gets off the couch and walks into the kitchen to get some more wine. She doesn't usually drink this much but just something about tonight is making her want to.

Once she's sure that Buck and Maddie have talked all the sibling stuff out, she leans on the doorway and knocks. "Who's ready to get their butts kicked at Clue?"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Kayla, come on! We're gonna be late!" Buck says, jumping on the guest bed as she groans. "Leave me alone. You kept me up too late last night." She whines, putting her head more into the pillow. "You kept cheating in Monopoly." He accuses and she quickly sits up at the allegation. "You're just a sore loser!" She throws back and the two start bickering, only stopping when Maddie catches their attention.
"Hi, love to see you two being so friendly, but all three of us have work. So please stop." She says nicely then walks away. Kayla knows that's the only time that Maddie will be nice about this whole thing and gets up. Walking over to the dresser, she pulls out a shirt then grabs jeans from the closet.
Buck is still in the room and she turns to look at him, "I have told you a million times, Buckley. You couldn't handle me. Now scoot." He rolls his eyes and leaves the room, making sure to close the door behind him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

After Buck drops off Maddie at dispatch, he drives himself and Kayla to the firehouse. To everyone who has been there long enough, the sight of seeing Kayla and Buck walk in together isn't abnormal, but Eddie hasn't been there for more than almost a month and a half. So it takes him by surprise to see them walk in together, especially because it's in the parking lot and they're getting out of his Jeep.

"Morning, Eddie!" She calls out when she sees the Texan and waves. "Morning, sunshine. Your car in the shop or something?" He asks, walking over to the friends. "No, I spent the night at Buck's last night. Did not need to drive home after all the wine and him keeping me up all night." She jokes and walks away but Eddie stands there stunned. He thought that she was single, that's what she told him and that her and Buck are only friends.

It doesn't take long for the alarm to ring but Cap stops everyone when he hears what kind of call it is. "Okay, we don't need everyone coming. Eddie, Kayla, you two stay back and get some inventory and other things done. Buck, Chim, Hen, and I will be back in 20-25 minutes." Everyone agrees and the crew is off.

"Hey, darlin." Eddie, says walking next to Kayla. "What's up, cowboy?" She smiles at him. "Do you spend the night with Buck a lot?" She looks at him confused as to why he's asking. "Only when we have stuff to talk about or it's board game night and he won't stop whining about me winning until I finally let him win, why?"

"It just kind of seemed like this morning that you two were..." He trails off and it takes her a minute to figure out what he means. When she does, she laughs so loud that she covers her mouth as he looks at her confused. "You-you-you seriously think that B-B-Buck a-an-and I?" She manages to get out as she continues to laugh at the crazy thought.

"Well, you two did come in together and you said you stayed the night." He says as he leans against the wall, not seeing how his question is so funny. "Like I said earlier, I hung out with him and Maddie. We talked and played board games."

"So there's nothing going on between you two?" He relaxes a bit, "Not for the lack of Buck trying. When he joined the 118, he was menace to us all and didn't want to follow the rules. He flirted with victims and didn't act professionally. Self-diagnosed himself as a sex addict. I decided to take a chance and help him out trying to better himself and figure himself out like I had to do when I moved here. He originally took it as me flirting or showing interest in him in a way that I didn't have. Still to this day every once in a while he will try but I shoot him down." She explains while they head upstairs.

"Plus, Maddie is living with him and I like her a bit more than him. He's just there really. So no, nothing is going on between Buck and I. I'm still very much on the market." She says laughing. He watches as she walks over to grab the inventory lists with a small smile. "So, you're not interested in anyone? At all?"

She smirks at him, her eyes looking up due to their height difference. "Now, I never said that, Cowboy." Her hazel eye winks as she hands him a clipboard. He doesn't say anything as she walks around him then down the stairs.

Damn, what is she doing to him?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That afternoon, the crew heads to a mall because of a call from there talking about a man getting stuck in the escalator. "I've always hated these things, never understood why you would want to go on them when elevators are much better." Kayla says as she fast walks with Hen ahead of the rest of the team to do a check to figure out what needs to happen.
"This is just an isolated incident, Kay. Something that happens once in a million." Hen assures her as they get to the escalator. "He just fell through the floor! He was proposing." The woman, assumed to be the girlfriend/fiancè, says trying her best to be calm. Hen takes one look and tells Kayla to stay with the woman while she informs the team.
"Hi, I'm Kayla. I'm so sorry for this happening. What's his name?" She asks the woman who is now kneeling by the opening. "Daniel, his name's Daniel." The woman says as Hen arrives with the team, "And can I get your name?" Kayla asks as she and Hen walk her away from the escalator so they can work on getting him out. "Ariel." She says, trying to hold back tears.
"Cap, his name is Daniel." Kayla says, looking at her Captain then turning back to the woman. "I know you're trying to be brave, and that is amazing, but you can cry. Just because you're crying doesn't mean you aren't brave, really it makes you even braver." She assures Ariel and notices her grip tightening on the ring box.
"I got a pulse, guys!" Chimney says and Ariel sighs of relief. Chimney pops up not too long later and she has to hold Ariel back from getting in the way, "Why is stopping?"
"He's just letting Cap know what's going on and getting some ideas from him and one of our other paramedics, Eddie. We work as a team to come up with ideas and figure things out. Helps us keep a low mortality rate." She explains, hoping to calm the woman down.
They get Daniel tied off and the chain off him and he starts to scream. Ariel runs over to look but Kayla blocks her view and pulls her back as Hen gets an I.V. ready for when they get Daniel out. "He got cut in a pretty bad spot but he's gonna be okay. It hurts him like hell now but it's just part of the process. Better for him to be yelling than nothing. Means he's still kicking and fighting."
Buck walks over to stand with Kayla and Ariel as Chimney works to get Daniel out. Eddie and Bobby reach in to help Chim pull Daniel out, "See? He's coming out, he's coming out. It's all right. I'm gonna go help." Buck walks back over to help finish pulling him out as Ariel holds onto Kayla. "He's almost there, just a bit longer." She says while rubbing her back in a comforting manner.
They get him on the backboard, awake and breathing and people start clapping as they strap him in. Everything looks to go okay until all of sudden he starts coughing up blood and she looks on in shock. "Daniel? Oh god, please no."Ariel says, escaping Kayla's grasp and walking over, the firefighter right behind her.
Bobby helps Kayla pull Ariel back as Chimney and Hen work to stop the cardiac arrest. Her heart drops when the flatline sounds and Hen takes her stethoscope out of her ears but Chimney doesn't stop.
Hen gets him to stop and they let Ariel go over to him. Bobby pulls Kayla into a comforting hug as she starts taking deep breaths, trying to calm her own self down. "I can't cry right now, Cap." She mutters, trying to fight back the tears as he squeezes her tight. "Yes, you can." He whispers and silent tears flow. One of the happiest days of that woman's life has just turned into one of, if not the, saddest.
The ride back to the firehouse is solemn, unusual for the close team. Usually, a ride back is full of laughs or getting playfully critiqued but everyone was silent. The effect and understanding of losing someone hitting them all hard as it does every time.
Hen is the first one out of the truck then Bobby. Eddie jumps out on his side with Kayla and Buck following. No one says a word, they just grab their stuff, put it away and their field wear. The only sound being the ones made by objects and Kayla is glad her shift is over.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

That evening, once Eddie and Buck are off, all three meet over at Buck's place. He told Eddie it was so they could help Maddie move but Kayla knew the real reason.

Sitting on the back of the couch, she enjoys the sight of Eddie in a flannel in jeans. Seeing him out of uniform is something she isn't completely used to yet but something she deftly enjoys.

"Thought you said we were helping your sister move. Doesn't look like she's packed anything." Eddie says confused, looking at Buck then Kayla when she gets off the back of the couch. His eyes not missing her legs that are out because of her jean shorts that have a white t-shirt tucked in. It's a simple outfit but it definitely looks much hotter on Kayla because of the way everything hugs her just right.

"Oh, this stuff is Abby's. I lied about the whole moving thing." Eddie looks at Buck confused and Kayla swears that is the cutest confused look she has ever seen. "I mean, my sister is moving, it's just..."

"She doesn't have a lot. She's able to live without a million things unlike Buck." She cuts in and Buck rolls his eyes. "What's going on, guys?" Eddie asks, "We asked you here, well I asked you here, 'cause there's someone I want you to meet." The Texan sighs then looks at Kayla then back to Buck.

"You didn't set me up, did you?" She laughs at his question, maybe a bit more than she should. "Buck? Set someone up? Please, he can barely handle his own-" Buck covers her mouth, "No, just-just trust me. And ignore the hyena over here-ow!" She bites his hand and he removes it, making Eddie laugh.

"This woman is...exactly what you need." Buck finishes just as a knock sounds on the door. "She's here." Buck says and Eddie still is apprehensive. Buck leaves the two alone as he goes to open the door, "Buckaroo! Where's Lala?" Carla asks as Buck laughs and she smiles brightly.

She grabs Eddie's hand and walks him into the kitchen where Buck and Carla are, "Ah! Goodness, I missed your face." Carla says while hugging Buck, "Oh, I missed you too." Carla looks over and lets out a happy noise when she sees Kayla, "There's my favorite girl!" Kayla drops Eddie's hand and walks over to the woman with open arms. "Oh, Carla. It's so good to see you again." The two women end the hug and she moves so Carla can see Eddie.

"Uh, Eddie, this-this is our friend Carla." Buck says while closing the door and the woman walks over to shake Eddie's hand. "Nice to meet you, Eddie." He shakes her hand, "Likewise."

"Carla is L.A.'s finest home health care aid. She has years of experience navigating giant bureaucracies, and we think she could help you figure out how to get Christopher what he needs." Kayla explains as Eddie looks at her with adoring eyes. "I'm red tape's worst nightmare." Clara says laughing, "I'll get you through this in no time. Now, let's go sit down and let's see what you're working with." He moves aside for her to walk into the living room.

"Besides that perfect bone structure, don't act like I didn't see you getting all cushy with him Lala." Kayla's face reddens as Eddie chuckles. "I don't know how to thank you two." He says, looking at his two friends. "Chris getting what he needs is all the thank you we could ever possibly need." Kayla assures him as Buck sighs, "Well actually-ow!" He holds the back of his head after she smacks it. "Don't try to be cute." She says before turning to Eddie.

"Now, go get the help you need. Carla is genuinely a superhero with this stuff." He walks into the living room, leaving the two best friends alone. Happy that they could help.
