Chapter Five - Don't Panic!

"That's it. You're doing great. You've, uh, you've done this before, haven't you?" Buck asks as the four walk down the stairwell slowly. The woman, who they learned is named Ali, is holding onto Kayla. Eddie is in front of them and Buck is behind, making sure everything is stable on all fronts. "Yeah. It was, uh, my major at the Rhode Island School of Design." Sarcasm is heavily apparent in her voice as Kayla giggles, completely understanding her acting the way she is.

"Don't worry, Buck always asks stupid questions when things get heavy. It's one of his red flags." She jokes with the woman which helps her stay calm. "Sorry. Sarcasm is my fallback for pretty much everything." Ali apologizes as the descent continues. "I totally get it. Kayla makes me use sarcasm alot for her always cheery personality."

"When we get to the ground floor, you're getting punched, bull head." She grits out as they get to a turn. Eddie has already made it past and is holding his hand out for Kayla to grab so she can get her and Ali down safely. The mistake Ali makes is looking down the stairwell, "You think he'll still be on the sidewalk when we get down there?"

"They more than likely already have that all cleaned up. Plus, we won't be going out that side anyway, don't worry about it sweets." Kayla says calmly, making sure Ali doesn't get too into her own head.

"Let's hustle up, you two. We don't want to be here for the next aftershock." Eddie encourages but Kayla sighs, "Eds, we have to take our time. Gravity is not our friend right now."

"Wait, what do you mean, the next aftershock?" Ali asks, seemingly terrified as Kayla shoots a look to Eddie. He sighs and holds his hand back out for Kayla to grab, "Come on." She grabs it and slowly walks down the stairs while keeping Ali close to her as the woman groans in pain. Once they all get down, Eddie goes to check out the next couple flights of stairs. "Oh, you gotta be kidding me." Buck says when he sees that the stairs are blocked off.

"We're not getting out this way." Eddie says looking over to the three people looking at him, "Well, where do we go? Back up?" Kayla asks and he smiles at her, "Ding, ding, ding, sunshine." He jokes and she rolls her eyes. "Remind me to punch you as well when get Ali to safety." she mutters and the blonde quietly laughs. It's something small but it helps Kayla know she's doing a good job at keeping her comforted.

"Ladder 118, respond. This is Captain Nash. I need a head count." Bobby says over comms, "Ladder 118 responding. Diaz, O'Malley, Buckley, we're good, Cap." Eddie responds and more people respond back in as well. It's another small thing that helps the nerves that Kayla is hiding.

"Hen, do you copy? Hen? This is Captain Nash for Henrietta Wilson. Do you copy?" Kayla looks at Eddie nervously, what the hell happened to Hen and why isn't she responding. Ali seems to notice the sudden change in Kayla's behavior, "Is that a friend of yours?" Eddie looks at Kayla then replies, "Let's keep moving." he says and the four start their climb back up.

Once they are back up to the floor, Buck pulls in Ali then Kayla. She helps pull Eddie in and they stand on the wall opposite of Ali and Buck. "Miss, there's this egress on the north stairwell of this floor." Buck says as he starts to get her hooked up onto his harness. "What if it's blocked, too? Can't you guys get a ladder into one of the windows?" She asks as Eddie and Kayla move to be on the same side of them. "It's too risky. Building shifted too much." Eddie says as he and Kayla start to walk more into the hallway to try and find a way out.

"Hey, just so you know. Hen, will be okay." He whispers to her, "I know she will, she's Hen. She's always okay." She mutters and gives him a nervous smile. "I don't think I've seen you this nervous before."

"I'm good at hiding it but I think I've hid it a bit too long today and the resolve is starting to go away." Her smile waivers as everything finally starts to catch up with her. She looks away from him as she tries to calm down and keep a brave face like she needs too until they get this done. She can let reality set in later and cry about it all she wants alone, like she's done since she turned seventeen.

Noticing her change, Eddie thinks quickly and gently grabs her hand. "It's not human to always be brave. Sometimes you have to let it out." He says and she looks at him. "Let's just get out of this impending death trap." She says with a slight laugh and he nods. They find a hole and start to dig it out as Buck and Ali come up behind them.

"Hey, hey, hey, hey. Hey. Is anyone there?" A muffled voice yells out, making everyone stop. "You guys hear that?" Buck asks, "Help! Is anyone there?" the man groans. Buck pries the door open as him and Eddie get into the room with her following close behind. "I knew help would come." The man says, his voice seeming to be a bit more relaxed. "That's right. We're here, we got you, buddy. All right, don't move. Just relax, okay? I need you to stay as still as possible." Eddie says as he starts to check him over. "Okay, we got to roll him over. On three. One, two, three." The three of them roll the man over as he screams.

"I... uh, I soiled myself." He says, embarrassed. "We're not worried about that. It's the least of our problems." Kayla assures him. "Not my proudest moment." He groans. "Can you wiggle your toes for me?" Eddie asks and it seems like he's trying but he can't. Eddie looks over to Kayla because as they were doing this, Buck slid down the room to look for something. "Just talk loud enough where I can hear you." She says, not wanting to leave this man alone more than he already has been.

Eddie nods and slides down to meet Buck. "Numbness in his legs, loss of bladder control." Buck asses, "Spinal injury. We got to move him out now." Eddie says and Kayla starts to look around for something they can use as a replacement backboard. "Ali, is there an ironing board in the closet?" She asks and the woman pulls one out.

"Could work, but how are we gonna get him down the stairwell?" Eddie asks, "Maybe we don't use the stairwell." Buck says, a plan hatching in his head.

Eddie and Buck pry open the elevator hatch. Kayla looks down the hatch along with Eddie to assess the situation, "At least we're not blocked by any debris. Or an elevator." She says and looks up, her light illuminating the wires, "How much do you think it weighs?"

"2,500. 3,000 pounds?" He guesses, "I like our chances." Buck says and it's an agreed plan. Once the man, who they found out is named Batari, is strapped to the ironing board. Eddie go down the shaft with him as Buck puts him down slowly with the rope. Kayla watches and starts picking at her lips. Her nerves starting to get the better of her. "You guys are doing great. You're almost there." Buck encourages as Eddie and Batari get closer to the next elevator shaft they need to get into. "Eight more feet, Buck." Eddie calls out. Once he gets to the level he starts to get the doors open to get him in there, "Buck, Kayla, get down here." He calls out and they start to get in position.

Buck takes Ali down with him and Kayla will go down alone to make it all easier. That is until another aftershock comes. Eddie is able to get Batari on the next floor before the shock and now he has to worry about his teammates and the other victim.

"Let's go, Buck! Move your ass! Kayla, come on!" He yells out as Buck and Ali get through the door. Kayla gets down as quickly as she can and tries to jump but her body won't move. "Come on, darlin. Don't be scared now." Eddie says, trying to assure her. She takes a deep breath and jumps but misses but a little and grabs the edge, "Kayla!" Buck and Eddie scream as the girl holds on tight to the edge. Eddie quickly pulls her in as the elevator falls.

Held close to his chest, as the elevator crashes. She opens her eyes to see his brown ones looking down at her concerned. Him above her as her cheeks start to redden, "Thanks," She whispers, her voice not really wanting to work. "Well, we can't lose our sunshine can we?" He teases then helps her up.

"I told you I liked our chances." Buck says, trying to break some tension that was made after the save. The rest of the trip is easy sailing. They get Ali and Batari down to the others when they hear Cap's radio.

"Looks like we got one more thing to do." Buck says as he starts to the truck. Kayla goes to follow him but Eddie stops her, "Kayla, are you okay? You almost died back there."

"I'm fine, Eddie. My body just stopped for a second. It was nerves but we got through it. I won't say it wasn't scary but hey, I'm still here." She says and he messes with her hair, making her laugh as they walk to the truck. Grabbing some tools they go to where Cap said they need to go over the comms before the chief said to evacuate. They know better, Cap and Chim were coming out unless Hen was with them.

"But I think it's far enough out that we can get back behind it and push it out the rest of the way." They hear Bobby says and it's perfect timing. "Looks like we got here just in time, then." Buck says as they round the corner. "Yeah, seems like they were planning on having all the fun without us." Eddie agrees with a smile, "Why do you wanna take all the fun, Cap? I thought we were family." She teases as he looks at them relieved. "Heard over the radio you needed some equipment and available hands down here." Buck says and Cap chuckles, "You know you guys are disobeying a direct order."

"And they'll be duly reprimanded, as soon as we're done here." Chief Williams says as she makes her appearance with the group and a slew of other firefighters behind her. "Looks like you're gonna have to reprimand yourself, as well." Bobby teases as the 118 move to stand together. "I'm seriously considering it. Your people are very persuasive and persistent. One shot, Captain. Either way, no one's coming to rescue us." Williams says but it doesn't make the 118 anyless determined to do this, if anything, it makes them more determined.

Everyone stands to the sides as Chimney uses a truck to try and pull a big piece of bundling out of the way so they can get more moved. Once the piece is moved, Cap orders for some support beams. Buck and Kayla hammer them into place as they plus Eddie make their way into the opening to try and find Hen.

It takes everyone using their full strength to move some pieces to make another passageway. Once they find a piece looking to be the main blockage, everyone helps pull it down and then they wait.

Barking is heard as a Yorkie runs out as Buck calls out for Hen. It's another minute until Hen walks out with the missing little girl on her back. Kayla sighs and grabs the first hand she can find, which is Eddie's. She doesn't notice it but he does and he smiles, not only because she grabbed his hand but also because Hen is safe.

Once Hen is back with the team, they all share a small laugh at the events of everything today. As if saying, we all made it out okay, we won again. Everyone walks out and Kayla almost cries when the little girl, Kat, is reunited with her parents.

Eddie, Buck, and Kayla start putting their stuff away when Buck's phone buzzes. "Hey, service." he says, catching Eddie's attention and he quickly gets on his phone. What surprises Kayla when she looks at her phone isn't the texts from her parents and sister asking if she's okay because of everything that was shown on TV but a text from Maddie. She texts her back assuring she's okay and smiles as she texts her family back as well. Her dad promised to call later to talk about what happened this morning.

"Hey, can you guys do me a huge favor?" Eddie asks when he gets off the phone, "Yeah, of course." Buck says as Kayla nods.

The favor was to take Eddie to Chris's school to pick him up. Kayla is in the back of Buck's jeep, changed into a t-shirt and jean shorts after they got cleaned up at the station. It doesn't take long for them to arrive at the school and Eddie basically jumps out of the car.

"Maybe you're right, Kaz. I think he might just be Superman." Buck says as they watch Eddie run into the school. A smile hasn't left her face since they arrived and saw how quick Eddie switched to dad mode, "Maybe, but I think it's mostly that he's an amazing dad." She says as they wait for Eddie and Christopher.

The doors are wide open so the two can see right in as Eddie hugs his son. Her eyes water for what seems like the millionth time today but for once it's good. It takes a minute but Eddie and Christopher walk out of the school and to the Jeep. Once Eddie opens the back door for Chris to get in, he's greeted with a kind smile from Kayla.

"Dad, you didn't say that you knew a princess." He says and she laughs, "Well, it's nice to meet you, Christopher," She says as Eddie helps him get in the Jeep. "I'm Kayla. I work with your dad." She holds out her hand for him to shake which he does. "You got a good shake there, bud." He laughs and it melts her heart. OMG, this kid is already winning her over.

"Chris, you already met Kayla but this is Buck. He also works with me." Buck waves and Chris smiles. "You already have friends dad? That's new." He says, roasting his father. Kayla looks at Chris shocked as she holds back a laugh but Buck doesn't even hide it as Eddie chuckles.

"Good to see you too, kid." He says as Buck takes off.

What a nice way to end a very hectic and chaotic day, but it's just another day for the 118.
