Chapter Fifteen - Lonely Kayla
(yeah, y'all might hate me for this one but it's been planned since the start.)
Eli and Ava's visit seemed way too short for Kayla, but thankfully soon she will have her parents in LA for some family bonding. Til then, she's got Buck and the people of LA to take care of.
The 118 is responding to a call on the freeway of a woman on a road sign trying to get the attention of a man named Norman. "So, she's just some woman in a bathrobe? She's not threatening anyone or demanding Batman to come fight her?" Kayla asks, her well placed joke makes Buck and Eddie chuckle while Cap holds back a smile. "That's what it seems like for now, but you know these things usually turn very fast." Cap says as the truck stops.
The crew jumps out and grabs their gear and are able to hear the woman, "Hell no! I won't come down until Norman sees me! And don't you dare try to force me down!" She screams. 'Wow, whoever Norman is, he really got this woman fired up.' Kayla thinks to herself as Bucm walks over. "Wife, mistress, or girlfriend?" Kayla smiles, "I think neglected wife, from the tone of her voice and the fact she's in a robe honestly."
Buck nods, "Nobody's gonna force you to do anything. We're just gonna talk. What's your name?" Athena says over the loudspeakers on the cop cars.
"Lola!" The woman answers.
"Lola, my name's Athena. What's the problem?"
"The problem? The problem is after 30 years of marriage, I can't get 30 seconds of attention from my husband!" Buck nudges Kayla as she rolls her eyes. "It's like I'm invisible! But I'm-I'm not invisible! I am here, damn it! See me, Norman!" The woman opens her robe and flashes the people around. "See me now?" She asks as the people cheer.
"All these people are doing is edging her on, it's pathetic." Kayla mutters as Buck helps her into the repelling gear. She's going down to help talk to the woman while Buck and Eddie stay up top to help if needed.
A few minutes pass until Athena speaks again, "Lola, good news, we found your man. He's on his way." This doesn't seem to please the woman, "I won't come down until he sees me!"
"Ma'am, you're the most famous face in the city right now. There ain't exactly a way to miss you."
"I don't care."
"Okay, Kayla, move into position." Bobby radios, "On it, Cap." She radios back and she starts to move into position as the paramedics move a safety landing into position, causing the woman to protest.
Kayla jumps down onto the sign as the woman shoots the safety landing. "Woah, okay." She mutters to herself as LAPD move into shooting position but Athena tells them to stand down. Lola turns the gun to Kayla and she puts her hands up. "Hey, I'm just here to help."
"Lola, listen to me very carefully. You now have every firearm in the greater Los Angeles area pointed at you. If you continue to threaten that lady, they will fire." Athena warns Lola, "I don't wanna hurt anybody." She says, putting down the gun. "I just can't handle being ignored anymore."
"Lola, I understand what you mean. You don't mean physically ignored, emotionally. I had that for years." Lola rolls her eyes at Kayla. "Yeah right, a girl like you knows exactly what that's like."
"You have Norman, mine's name was Vince. He treated me like a lady around people but when we were alone I was nothing. I wasn't even a person to him. You feel like you're on an island by yourself when you should feel like you're in paradise because he's the one. The one who helped you through so much yet suddenly acts like you're nothing. Like you are just something that will always be there, not something he is grateful for to be there. You're at the point where I was right before I moved here three years ago. I was begging, pleading for him to show me any kind of attention but then I realized, he's not worth it." Kayla says, letting out emotions she's had stored away for a while and she can see that it hit Lola like she hoped it would.
As she finishes talking, feedback from the loudspeaker comes on. "Uh, L-Lola. Lola, honey, it's me. I'm here and I see you just like the sign says."
"Liar!" She screams, "You look right through me. Y-You don't even notice me. I'm just something you expect, not something you are grateful for." Norman looks at Athena before speaking again, "Lola, honey. Honey, now, listen to me. I-I'm here, and I see you. And I need you to put the gun down, okay?" Lola shakes her head at Norman as Kayla looks between the couple.
"Put the...put the gun down and let them bring you to me. And we can spend the rest of our lives together, and I can show you how much I love you." Norman says, "I don't believe you, Norman. You don't even know who I am anymore. I mean...I don't even know." Lola says and Kayla recognizes what's going on. She's finally understanding the situation she's in after all these years, she lost herself.
"I've been a mother for 18 years and now that Zack's gone, I don't remember who I was before that. Back when you used to look at me." Norman doesn't say anything as he gets on his phone.
"Maybe you're right. Maybe it is over." Lola says and starts to walk towards the edge but Kayla quickly pulls her back. "Nope, can't let you do that. I don't think you understood what I meant." Before Kayla can try and explain, music comes from the loudspeaker.
In Your Eyes by Peter Gaberial starts playing from Norman's phone which he is holding to the radio connected to the speaker.
"Oh, my god." Lola sniffles, "That song. He remembered. It was our first date. We went to see S-Say Anything..." She recalls, it brings a hopeful smile to the younger woman's face.
"I see you. I see you. Lola, I see you. I see the girl who used to sneak out to the beach bonfires and listen to The Psychedelic Furs and The Cure. Lola! Lola, I see you! I see the girl who once drank nine shots of Jäger and woke up without a hangover. Lola, I see you. I see the girl I love!" Norman proclaims and the crowd cheers.
Lola starts to walk to the edge again, trying to get to Norman, but Kayla stops her again. "That's not a fun way to go down, not without the safety landing at least." She jokes and slowly slides the gun out of Lola's hand as she helps get her off the sign.
Once Lola is off the sign, Eddie takes her over to the ambulance to check her out while Buck helps Kayla out of her gear. "What did you say to her?" He asks, "Just gave a little woman to woman advice. I'm happy her situation turned out better than mine did." After her gear is off, Kayla and Buck wait for Norman to get to his wife. Once he's close to where the ambulance is, they wait for Eddie to clear her. Once he does, she walks over and the couple kisses and before they know it, Lola is arrested.
"Yup, figured that would happen." Kayla says with a neutral expression as she puts her stuff back onto the truck so they could head out. As she heads to get into the truck, she feels someone grab her wrist. Looking behind her, she sees Eddie. "You did great back there, really shined today, Darlin."
"Thanks, Eddie." She says before pulling her wrist out of his grasp and getting into the truck, not looking back to see his expression.

That night, Maddie and Kayla are invited to a local bar by Chimney to help Buck with some advice for him officially declaring he's single. "Thanks for driving me again, carpooling is always better than driving alone." Kayla says as she gets out of Maddie's car.
She smoothes out her jean shorts that have white lace on the leg cuffs with a baby pink flowing crop top. "It's no problem, you are a much better copilot than Evan, honestly." Maddie says, making Kayla smile as she switches her shoes from slides to matching baby pink cowboy boots.
"It's been a while since I've been out to a bar. Hopefully this is as fun as the ones back home." The girls walk into the bar, arm in arm. They chit chat together until they get to the main area of the bar where they quickly spot Chimney and Buck. Kayla waves with a bright smile as the girls walk over. Maddie sits with Chimney while Kayla sits with Buck.
"Hi. Sorry we're late. I don't know why I get on the freeway. I always regret it." Maddie explains, "Because you are an eternal optimist, that's why." Chimney says as Buck looks at the two of them confused. Kayla scrolls on her phone as Chimney and Maddie talk until the waitress comes over with their drinks, "Oh, Kay, I forgot to ask what you wanted to drink." Maddie apologizes, "It's cool. Do y'all have moonshine?" The waitress nods, "I'll do a blue raspberry moonshine margarita." The waitress writes it down along with Maddie and Chimney's food order.
Buck looks over at Kayla still confused, she shrugs as the waitress comes back with her drink. The two continue to feel confused and like they're chaperones as Maddie and Chimney continue to only act as if it's only them at the bar.
Soon, they get to the karaoke stage and start singing Islands in the Stream. "Well, this is about to be interesting." Kayla mutters as she takes another drink of her moonshine margarita. "I'm getting another drink." Buck says as he gets up. She giggles to herself and watches the two in front of her singing.
Her phone buzzes and she sees that she got a text from an unknown number. Instead of being smart and ignoring it, she decides to reply.
Unknown: Nice job playing hero. You deserve something special.
Kayla: Umm, hi? Can I ask who this is?
Unknown: Oh come on Layla, don't act like you don't know who this is.
Kayla: How the hell did you get my number, Vince?!
Vince: That's not important, sweetheart. Just know that you and your friends can get whatever you want at the bar tonight. It's all paid for.
She looks up and tries to see if she can find him or someone who looks like they could be working for him but sees no one. Putting her phone down, she chugs her drink before seeing Buck walk past her with the reporter that was at the firehouse following. She didn't even notice them talking but apparently something happened because they're headed to the bathrooms. Rolling her eyes, she walks over to the bar and orders another drink.
Might as well enjoy it since it's all free for her.
Three drinks later, Maddie and Chimney are still doing karaoke as Buck walks back over to the table with a huge grin on his face. "So, you and the reporter?" She asks, her words slightly slurring. "Oh, you saw that?" Buck's face gets red as he sits down. "Yeah, and I thought you had grown past Buck 1.0 and became Buck 2.0. I worked really fucking hard to help you mature." She whines, the moonshine starts to kick in.
Buck looks at her confused until he sees the glasses around her, "Kayla, how much have you drank." She groans, "Enough to not care. It's all free anyways."
"Actually it's not-"
"Vince got my phone number. He texted me saying that I deserve something special so he paid for all the drinks we could all have. You're welcome." Buck is stunned at hearing that Vince is in contact with Kayla much less buying drinks for everyone the whole night.
"I thought you weren't talking to him. That you didn't want to talk to him ever again." Kayla looks at Buck as he talks, "I don't care at this point. Maddie and Chimney are getting together, slowly, and you just fucked a reporter in the bathroom. I'm gonna enjoy being forever alone because apparently my taste in men is shit."
Buck looks at her shocked as she rambles before she lays her head on her arms. She is definitely going to feel it in the morning.

Kayla is leaning her head against the window of the fire truck as the crew is heading to a gas station for a robbery. "I tried to tell you." Buck says, leaning close to her. She quickly raises her hand to try and smack him but he moves out of the way as her hand flails around. "I don't wanna hear it Buckley. You're being annoying." She mutters, her eyes closed.
"What happened to you?" Eddie asks, "She got majorly drunk last night for some reason. I still haven't figured out why yet." Buck says and it earns him a kick to the shin. "He asked me, dumbass. But what he said was true. That's what happened." Her eyes remain closed as she speaks, not wanting the light to hit her eyes that are very sensitive.
"How much did you drink?" Hen asks, "I have no idea. It was free, that's all I know." Hen and Eddie look at Buck. "It's a long story." He doesn't get a chance to elaborate as the truck stops. She gets out of the truck and grabs her bag as Buck is talking Cap's ear off about what happened between him and the reporter last night.
"Bonnie and Clyde, meets Dumb and Dumber." Athena says as the 118 looks over the two victims / robbers. "He seems fine. Pupiles are dilated. Definitely high on something." Eddie says after he looked over the man. Kayla hides a laugh at his obvious statement as she helps clean the woman's wound on the gurney.
"Well, I'll try to contain my shock." Athena says, walking over to the gurney. "Get him out of here." She says as some of her officers pick him up. "Stay strong baby bear." The dude says, his voice makes Kayla wanna grind her teeth. "I'm not your baby bear, jackass. Men are the worst, right?" The blonde woman asks looking up at Kayla and Hen.
Hen scoffs, "You're asking the wrong girl, Kay?" She looks to the younger woman. "They are the worst. You're not the only one in this boat. My luck hasn't been the best either. They all seem good but then they have to go and do something." She says and the injured woman laughs.
Buck starts to talk to Cap about the reporter again and Kayla rolls her eyes. "Ex-boyfrined?" The woman asks, noticing the gesture. "No, absolutely not. He's basically my brother who won't shut up." She says, looking at Buck. His jaw is dropped at her words before he stats trying to defend himself as they wheel the woman out.
Kayla stays back but soon wishes she went with Hen when the two workers basically confess their feelings for each other. Kayla throws her head back in annoyance before walking out of the store.
Everyone is getting love but her!
That night, Kayla is sat on her couch in lilac pajama shorts and a big t-shirt she's had since high school with wine and Delia sitting next to her while watching some old movie on TV. She doesn't know what has been wrong with her lately, usually she's all for people falling in love but she guesses the whole thing with Eddie is messing with her head.
She doesn't get much time to think about it when someone knocks on her door. She goes to open it but then quickly shuts it when she sees who it is, but his shoe blocks the door from closing. "Kayla, come on. Just let me in to talk." Vince's voice says, carrying through the apartment.
Against her better judgment, she walks away from the door so he can walk in. "What do you want, Vince?" She asks, his name like venom on her tongue. "I wanted to talk to you about this guy you've been seeing. Edmundo, was it?" He asks, a cocky smile on his lip as she jaw tightens. "We're friends. That's all." She says as she walks to her kitchen to get some more wine. Vince follows close behind her, his familiar woody and warm cologne filling the air. "You can say that all you want, but we both know the truth, Kayla. You are really into military firefighter Ken but sadly first love barbie is back in town." She rolls her eyes as she fills her glass of wine before pulling out a beer for Vince.
"Ah, you remember my favorite. Is this the kind you always get?" he asks, teasing in his voice as he opens the bottle. "Some things are easier to just continue with than others." She mutters, crossing her arms as she takes a drink. "Look, Kayla, I know things between us became very rocky three years ago."
"You basically were just using me as pleasure doll and a pretty piece of arm candy!" She says, her voice rasing to remind him of how thing were befor she left. "I know, I know, and I'm sorry. I've changed. Dad getting sick has put a lot of things in perspective for me." She looks at him with a neutral expression, he sounds genuine but could easily be lying.
"I want to aplogize for how I treated you. I love you, Kayla. I have since the day I met you and I let things get in the way of being the proper man for you." His hazel eyes start to fill with tears. "I let myself get comfortable. I let things my friends were saying get into my head and I messed up. I will never be able to change what I did but I want to change what could happen." He puts down his beer and gently grabs her hands.
"Can you forgive me, my love?" The nickname he used to call her hits her heart. He said with with the same love and sincerity he used to before things changed. Suddenly she's 18 again laying in his bed with the sunlight beaming in through his curtains as they talk about their future together, before he started to treat her like less of a person.
"This all seems very sudden, what are you planning?" She asks, putting her guard back up. "I'm not planning anything. When I came to LA, I originally wasn't going to come see you. I was just going to let you live your life without the thought of me...but then Jamie told me about the stuff you've done and I just...I couldn't stay away."
Taking her hands out of his, she walks to her couch and sits down. "Kayla, you know I'm not a man who begs." She chuckles at his words before jumping in shock when he gets on his knees in front of her, "Kayla Georgia O'Malley, I am begging you to please forgive me."
Her eyes look at the man in front of her, a man she loved for years. Someone who she trusted with her whole heart but broke it dozens of times. She knows something has changed, before she left he would've never begged but here he is now. Begging for her forgiveness.
"I'll forgive you, Vince. It will take a lot for me to trust you again and you are on a very thin line. I can't let myself get hurt like that again." She says, looking at him with sad eyes. He leans in and rests his chin on her thigh, "I promise you, you won't regret this." He says before kissing her covered thigh.
His lips continue to move up as she sighs, is she really going to let this continue? Is she going to let him take her to bed or here on the couch? As his lips move to her neck, she moans softly. The familiar lovely pressure from his lips makes her heat up.
Yes, she's going to let him do this because holy fuck does she need something! "Vince, you have to remember." She mutters, pulling back to look at him. "You're a virgin, if you want this then I will take care of you but we don't have to." He says, putting his arms around her waist. " I want to." She says before leaning in and kissing him.
The two move in sync, the years of being together coming back for this moment as his hands slide under her shirt as she unbuttons his. He picks her up and her legs wrap around his waist, "Where's your room?" He asks, kissing her cheek and jaw as he waits for her answer.
"Down the hall, the door is open." She says and he walks them to her room. He gently throws her on the bed before closing door.
