Chapter Eight - Bigots are Never Helpful
"Good morning, everyone!" Kayla says happily as she walks upstairs and sees everyone. "Well, look who finally decided to show up." Buck teases and quickly doges as she goes to smack the back of his head. "Don't even start with me, Buckley. I'm in a good mood." She sits on a chair between Buck and Chimney. Hen and Eddie are sitting across from them as Bobby sits at the head of the table.
"What's got you into such a good mood? Did you finally get a boyfriend?" Chimney asks in excitement as she knits her brows in confusion, "Do you seriously think I could only be this happy because of a man or because I got laid?" He doesn't say a word as she nods with a proud look. "If you must know, I just had a very good night of sleep is all. I am starving though." She looks at the food in front of the crew with a hungry smile.
"Alright before we dig in-" Bobby starts to say but gets cut off by the P.A. and alarm, the team groans. "Okay, lets go!" They all get out of their chairs and head to the trucks.
The trucks arrive at a little shopping center where a woman was run over by car. The team gets out of the truck and Kayla walks over with Eddie to grab their bags as Bobby and Buck walk over to the woman.
"I didn't know what to do. I was afraid to move the car." An elderly woman says to Bobby, "You did the right thing, we'll take it from here." He tells her as Buck, Eddie, and Kayla surround the woman to see what's wrong. "Do any of you have a pen? I've got a partial license plate. Somebody should write it down." The woman's voice sounds familiar. Kayla looks at her and it takes her a second before she realizes who it is and laughs to herself as Eddie and Buck continue to talk to her.
Once Hen and Chimney arrive with the ambulance she walks over to them with an amused smile, "Oh no, what happened?" Hen asks nervously when she sees the expression on Kayla's face, "Just follow me, we have a familiar friend." She leads them to the woman, "Okay, c-can you tell me your name?" They hear Buck ask as they get to the woman, "Lorraine." She answers as Athena, who nobody apparently saw arrive, gets over to them as well.
"Oh my gosh, Kayla was right. Don't we know you?" Hen asks, looking down at the woman. "Uh, no, I don't...I don't, I don't think so." Lorraine says nervously, obviously not wanting them to remember who she is. "Last year, Hancock Park." Hen says, things start to come back.
"That's right, I never forget a femur." Chimney says, making Kayla raise an eyebrow then she turns to the woman. "Well, I never forget a scammer's face. How's life been porch pirate?" She kneels down to be closer to eye level with the woman and Lorraine chuckles nervously. "Looks like I'm not the only one still observant." Athena says, commending the way Kayla remembered the woman.
They get her loaded onto a gurney and Chimney does some quick checks on her as she groans in pain into the oxygen mask. "Guess you moved up from porches to parking lots, huh, Lorraine?" Athena questions and Kayla smirks as she puts her equipment back in her bag. "What's your scam?"
"I don't know what you are talking about. I went to my court-mandated treatment. I'm completely cured. Haven't stole a package in months." Kayla rolls her eyes and walks to the truck, her bag on her shoulder. Eddie and Buck are leaning against the big red vehicle, watching everything that's going on.
"Kaz, I still have no idea how you remember so many people. We see thousands of people a year." Buck says in amazement, "They just kinda get stored in the back of my mind until I see them again. It's especially nice when I'm just out on a day off and I see someone we saved living their life normally. Sometimes they see me and sometimes they don't but it's rewarding nonetheless." She leans against the truck with them, listening in on the conversation.
"Pled down to a misdemeanor. Insurance companies are happy to settle instead of going to court." Lorraine says, as if it's obvious knowledge and it makes Kayla sick. "Insurance companies are less happy about fraud. And I got three witnesses who claim you intentionally stepped out behind that poor woman's car. Makes me wonder what I might find when I pull the security footage from this parking lot." Athena says, not wavering like usual.
"I think you'll find a woman suffering with mobility issues. Lot of trouble walking since that fall on the steps. You know, I wonder if it's because I received improper care on the scene." This causes the three firefighters to laugh at her empty threats, missing the end of the whole conversation. Some people are just awful.

Kayla is laying on the couch upstairs in the firehouse, reading a book when two familiar pairs of boots walk over to her. "How can I help you, gentlemen?" Her eyes don't leave her book as Eddie and Buck lift her legs up so they can sit on the couch then put them on their laps.
"We're bored, Darlin. Come on, let's play a board game or something." Eddie complains but she keeps her eyes on her book, trying to finish the chapter. "I'm busy right now, you two go play with the hoses or something." She says, dismissing them but they don't move.
"Maddie is going for a ride along today." Buck says, this grabs Kayla's attention. "Really? Who'd she get?" She puts her book down and looks at the two men sitting with her with crossed arms. "She requested Athena but she'll probably text you about it later."
"You're already friends with Buck's sister?" Eddie asks, impressed. "What? You don't think I can make friends, Cowboy? I'm the friendliest person here." Buck laughs at the statement, making her sigh. "I have more friends than you, bullhead."
"I do that by choice." He says, as if it's some kind of achievement. "You make me worry about you sometimes, Buckley." He grins at her and she laughs and messes with his hair. "So, Eddie, how's everything with Carla?" She asks, looking at the man who already was looking at her.
"Chris loves her and she's amazing. I-I don't know what I would do without her." It brings a smile to Buck and Kayla's faces when they hear him continue to talk about how much Carla has helped in such a short amount of time.
Their bonding time gets cut short when the alarm goes off and Buck groans. "I thought we were gonna play a board game!" Kayla rolls her eyes and gets off the couch with Eddie following right behind her. "You coming, Buck?" He asks, looking at the boy who's pouting on the couch. "We can play one when we get back." Kayla's words quickly get him off the couch.
"Let's go save some lives."
"Hey! That's my line!" She yells before jumping on his back and he takes the two of them to the truck as she laughs. Eddie watches with adoring eyes trained on Kayla. Her smile, her attitude, her love of people, just everything makes it easy for Eddie to know that he can't until the moment is right to ask her out.

The 118 arrive to a graveyard for a possible appendicitis. "Why are there people protesting?" Kayla asks Hen as the two women get out of the truck. "Who knows, from the signs it looks like some church." That brings a bad taste to Kayla's mouth. "All these extremist so called Christians bring a bad name to us all." She mutters to herself as she slides on her gloves.
"Captain. Mr. Personality over here starting coughing, grabbed his side and fell over. Could be appendicitis. I'm not sure." Athena tells Bobby as everyone follows behind him. "All right, back up. Step aside, please." He and Athena say, moving the people so the team can get in.
"Sir, I'm just gonna examine you for a second here. Oh. Okay, we got a colostomy bag, probably backing up. You're gonna have to intubate him. Sir, just try to relax. These paramedics here are gonna attend to you." Bobby says when he sees the bag. Hen and Chimney move into position but the man protests, "Oh, hell no. You do it."
"Sir, I am not a trained paramedic. I can't intubate you. They can." Bobby says calmly as everything starts to make sense. The man is a bigot. "I'm fine." He says weakly, obviously not by the way he's talking. "Sir, you're not fine. Your bowel is probably obstructed. The contents of your colostomy bag are backing up into your system. You're about to choke on your own waste. You will suffocate and die." Chimney explains, trying to help the man but he protests again, "Get...away."
"Okay, sir, if you refuse care, we cannot administer it by force." The man looks up a bit and sees Buck, Eddie, and Kayla all looking at him with no expression, "What about him?" He's looking right at Eddie, "Diaz" Bobby says and he kneels down to start helping. "Diaz? What kind of name is that?"
"My father's from Mexico. My mother's Swedish. I can help you out with the Swedish half. But no one told me which half that is." The man quickly shakes his head no and Eddie gets up holding his hands up. "What about you, girl?" He asks, looking at Kayla. "Nope, not a trained paramedic I just help out with the basic stuff I was taught." She explains smiling fakely at him.
"Okay, would you like me to call you another paramedic team so you can have an all-white one?" The man nods at Bobby's words and it makes the whole team annoyed, "He's gonna aspirate." Hen says and not even a second later he does. "And he's aspirating" The team moves back in disgust. "Actual diarrhea of the mouth. Outstanding." Chimney says sarcastically, "I'm gonna be sick." Kayla mutters as she turns her face away from the disgusting sight and Buck rubs her back comfortingly.
"Okay, guys, let's get to work." Hen moves into action as Eddie walks over him, "Let me roll him over." He says and on the count of three, everyone helps roll him over. The man continues to gag as Eddie puts his finger in his mouth, "I need mechanical suction. This isn't cutting it."
"We got that on the truck, don't we Hen?" Kayla asks and the woman nods, "Yeah, we do Kay. Let's get him on a gurney." Cap brings the gurney to the other side and they all lift him onto it. Some of the other paramedics put him in the ambulance then take off.
"Well done." Maddie says as Bobby, Buck, and Kayla walk out of the graveyard. "Maddie!" Kayla says happily as she goes over to hug the girl. "Uh, Cap, this is my sister Maddie."
"Great to finally meet you." Bobby shakes her hand as she smiles at him, "Yeah, you, too. I've heard nothing but wonderful things about you." Maddie says and Bobby chuckles, "Well, don't believe everything your little brother tells you."
"I meant from her." Maddie nods to Athena who's walking over to the group. "Ah. Well, the feeling is mutual." Athena smiles at her boyfriend as Maddie speaks up again, "She's something. She never lets anything get to her."
"Get to me? Do you know how many times in a given day somebody's got the opportunity to get to me?" Athena chuckles, "If I start letting them get to me, I wouldn't make it past breakfast. Which reminds me, we should eat." Maddie looks at her like she's crazy and Kayla laughs, "Eat? You want to eat after that?" The sergeant shrugs, "It's lunchtime." Maddie laughs as they get into the cop car.
"Maddie obviously doesn't understand the need of getting food when you can." Kayla says as the three walk over to the truck. "She should, she was an ER nurse after all." Buck says and she shrugs, "Still, now that has made me hungry." She walks ahead of the group and gets into the truck, sitting in her usual spot next to Eddie across from Hen.
