Chapter 17
DarkMoss swatted at something tickling her nose. It stoped for a moment then continued on. She opened her eyes to see Brambletail's tail in front of her face. DarkMoss thrusted her hind legs at Brambletail, who was sitting down next to Aquaspear. Brambletail lost her balance and fell backwards. DarkMoss sat up about the time Brambletail managed to catch her balance. A freezing gust of air hit DarkMoss like claws. She peered out of the den to see everything was covered in a layer of snow.
"It snowed?" DarkMoss asked.
"Yep, What happened to your face?" Brambletail tilted her head to the side.
"A rabbit scratched me." Brambletail let out a muffled laugh. DarkMoss shook her head and padded outside the woven den. Large fluffy snow flakes fell form the pale grey sky. Not a lot of snow had fell, only enough to cover a cat's paw.
"Aquaspear your apprentice has exploded! She's every where!" DarkMoss joked. Aquaspear bounded out of the den, bouncing high in the air when she landed. The three kits, Whitekit, Hollowkit and Sapkit where playing in the snow, trying to catch the falling flakes of snow. Last night, DarkMoss had wondered how Thistle had met Nutmeg. She had asked why he wasn't with her, but he didn't want to talk about it though.
A wad of snow hit DarkMoss' side. She looked at her challenger, the white and grey furred warrior glared at DarkMoss with bright blue eyes. Silverpatch circled around her, trying to hold a laugh. Slowly, DarkMoss drugged her black paw against the snow, gathering a wad of her own. After she got a small pile, she held her paw above the pile, waiting for the perfect time to strike. Silverpatch looked down to scrape another pile together, it was the perfect opportunity to get revenge. With her claws unsheathed to hopefully hold more snow, she took her paw and scopes as much snow as it would hold. Looking at Silverpatch, she slung her paw around, throwing the snow wad at Silverpatch. As soon as it left her paw, DarkMoss whipped around, and darted away. Snow sprayed behind her as she looked for a spot to hide. She recognized a tree that had a hole on the other side of it.
"Hey!" DarkMoss heard Silverpatch's angry call. DarkMoss turned quickly into the hole, scaring a squirrel that must have been sleep there. After realizing what was happening, DarkMoss squeezed herself up the surprisingly hollow tree. She climbed as fast as she could, not gaining on the grey squirrel at all.
DarkMoss was faced with a blinding amount of sunlight when the squirrel exited out of another hole. Struggling, she managed to fit herself through the small opening. She saw the squirrel bounce to a pine tree. Without any thought, DarkMoss ran to the edge of the oak branch and leapt into the still green tree. Blinded by the green needles, she tried to grab ahold of something. DarkMoss felt fur snag on her claws as she fell. Her body hit many branches and even broke a few as she plummeted to the ground. DarkMoss tried to turn her body so she would land on her paws, but another branch threw her off. DarkMoss shut her eyes closed as she saw the snow covered ground.
Pain griped her body as she landed in the snow on her side. After a moment, DarkMoss lifted her head, still dazed. Silverpatch reached over and killed the squirrel that DarkMoss must have brought down with her. The pain that griped her body started to loosen it's grip as the cold snow made her numb.
"Are you okay?" Silverpatch asked after a moment.
"Yeah, I think so." DarkMoss let her head fall into the snow. Silverpatch loomed over DarkMoss. With a smile, she dropped a paw full of snow on to DarkMoss' face.
"Really? You fox-heart." DarkMoss mumbled through the snow. DarkMoss rolled onto her belly, waiting for her head to clear. After a moment, she stood up. Pain throbbed through her legs for a moment, slowly fading away into nothingness.
"Let's go to Fallen Tree." Silverpatch decided after a moment. With a nod, DarkMoss padded after her. They was close to Fallen Tree already, in between camp and the large fallen sycamore tree. The log was darker with rot and half of the tree was hollow. The faint smell of fox put DarkMoss on edge. It had came through the previous night, probably looking for something to eat. The smell of a cat, maybe two, was also hanging around. One was a bit stronger than the other, nearly seemed fresh, but no tracks where around.
"I'm your leader! Now bow down to me." Silverpatch had leapt up onto Fallen Tree.
"Uhm, I don't think so." DarkMoss padded to the side of the log, about to push into the 'leader.'
"Excuse me? I am your leader, now sit back down!" Silverpatch had just finished talking right when DarkMoss pushed her off. DarkMoss stood up straight and puffed out her chest.
"I'm leader now. Now, go fetch me something to eat. Now." DarkMoss playfully demanded. Silverpatch just rolled her eyes as he mumbled a 'Alright.' She padded off behind DarkMoss.
"DarkMoss come here!" Silverpatch's voice sounded shocked.
"Are you still playing around?" DarkMoss asked as she jumped off the log. She saw Silverpatch looking at the snow behind the log. When DarkMoss got to where Silverpatch was, her jaw dropped. Blood was stained the white clearing. The sent of fox was stronger here. DarkMoss forced to push past Silverpatch, her fur stood on end as she saw a white cat laying in the hollow spot of this end of Fallen Tree. She seen the cat had grey tabby patches alone it's back. With a gasp, she realized who it was. Coontail, the deputy.
She padded over to the dead deputy, through the blood covered snow. She sniffed the tom, his flank stayed still.
"Coontail is dead." DarkMoss said. A pool of blood was around his neck. Bite marks covered the rest of him. DarkMoss carefully grabbed the dead cat's scruff, pulling him out of the log.
