Never In Control
Song: Empty- Olivia O'Brien
I stay in my room for what seems like hours. I know they are still here and they will not leave until I come out. I wonder how long that I could possible drag this out for before I just have to give in. The room has gone dark with the sun going down. I know below in the streets all the lights are coming on and the people are out. I finally stand up and walk on tip-toes to the bathroom. I quickly relieve myself and then change clothes. I walk over to the door and open it softly. I step out and hear them all talking in the living room. I should go in there but I turn to go up the stairs towards the roof instead.
I look over his way and the lights are all off. I wonder if he is home or actually out doing other things. I know that they did not kill him even though when I left them talking, I saw the way my father was ready to take him out. I don't know what comes over me in the moment but all I feel like doing is dancing. I set my phone down on the table and play a song and dance. I put all the emotion I have bottle up inside of me into the dance. A few times, I jump on to the ledge and dance. I could easily fall, plummeting to my death but I keep my balance and dance gracefully. When I finish I stand up on the ledge again and look to the ground below me.
I hear someone walk on the roof and I don't bother looking to see who it is. I quickly wipe a stay tear away so that she will not see it. "How did you know I was up here?"
"Sweetheart, come down from the ledge, it's not safe up there," she says calmly.
"Nothing is safe for me, is it?" I suck it all up. I need to pretend that I don't have any feelings.
"Violet...we were only looking out for you."
A tear escapes and runs along my cheek. I don't feel like talking to her or anyone at the moment. I know she will never leave until I climb down and pour myself out to her.
"He was doing what he was paid to do? You two were to never meet but I see you have done more than just talk to each other. So you really do have feelings for him? Are you in love with him?"
I don't answer her question about having feeling for him. I step off the ledge. "Did he tell you that I was on the ledge or did you just happen to come out here?" I roll my eyes in frustration. I know he is watching me, of course he is, he always is.
She reaches out for my hand. I look down at her and her eyes are teary as well. "I would be lying if I said I just came out here. He called said you were up here. He must really care for you too."
I let out a frustrated laugh, "Yeah sure...he is just doing his job right." I let my eyes cast towards the cloudy sky. "Watching me, stocking me, I can't do shit without him knowing. It's creepy really, don't you think, that he was hired to watch me and over time he came obsessed with me. I bet he even planned how to find a way into my life. He knew I was vulnerable and knew how to squeeze himself into my heart."
"So you do love him?" She asks yet again.
I huff, "Not now. He stands over there watching me. Instead of calling me, he calls you guys. He called you and told you I was dancing too close to the edge." I jump up on the ledge again. I turn to face his direction and yell as loud as I possibly can. "You see me...DO YOU!!!" I throw both arms out as if reaching towards the sky. "You want to save me then come save me." I tap my chest a few times and then drop my arms to my side. "I hate you. You hear that...ELI...I...FUCKING...HATE...YOU!!" I scream loud enough for all of New York to hear me, for him to hear me.
I wish that I could see him staring back at me but with the sun reflecting the way it is, I am not able to see inside his apartment. I hear my dad behind me now and I just stand there pretending not to hear him. "What the fuck is going on out here? The whole neighborhood can hear you yelling."
"Who gives a shit!" I slowly turn back around and step off the ledge.
My mom reaches out for my hand. "Apparently you do. If you want to get his attention then just go talk to him." She stops to glance over at my dad who by the way was not showing the same expression as her. I can tell it pissed him off to have her approval on Eli and he was so against it.
I turn to look back at him. "You like him don't you...but you don't like him with me. Tell me who he really is?"
I watch the way they look back and forth at each other, debating on if I should really know or not.
"Just tell me for fucks sake."
I watch as he runs his hands through his hair and hisses under his breath. He looks back up at my mom and she nods in some kind of agreement to tell me. He hisses again and under his breath I hear him say, "I'm going to regret this," before looking back up at me. "Eli is Jasper's son. I knew I should have hired someone else but he has lived here his whole life and knew all the ends and outs. I should have known it was a mistake to let him get this close to you."
He continues to talk, however my mind keeps thinking about Jasper. How did I not know about Eli? I close my eyes to pull at memories of being with Jasper. I remember him having a boy or two and maybe even a girl but I don't remember him having a son named Eli. And Eli's last name is Foster. This is so not making any sense. I must have this look of confusion on my face because my mom starts to explain more.
"His real name is Elijah and he uses his mother's last name. He has been going by Eli Foster since Jasper separated from his mom. Of course Jasper was not happy about the last name issue but figured maybe it would be best so that he doesn't have any main connections to his last name. He is so well known here in New York while owning the majority of the night clubs. Eli has always looked up to your father and wanted to get more into the business so he has helped him get his foot in the door."
I glance over at him and let out a very long sigh, "So you asked him to watch me."
"Yes. I..." he looks over at my mom. "We thought this way it would also keep him busy and safe doing this instead of out doing hits. We were just trying to keep both of you safe."
I can't help but not roll my eyes at that statement. They have got to be fucking kidding me. "So he has been here watching me since day one. He knows everything that I have done and therefore so do you."
They keep looking back and forth at each other and it's so freaking quite up here like everything in the city just stopped momentarily. "We are not upset with you for killing those men," my mom speaks for the both of them. "I am sure there were good reasons behind it. I just wished you would have actually cleaned up the mess we have taught you much better than that."
"Yeah well, they needed to be found for varies reasons," I smirk. "You were right about one thing it does get easier. I panicked with Gabe but the others it was like second nature. I never thought it could be that easy." I turn around and look towards his apartment, wondering if he is watching us or not. I fold my arms in front of my body. "So what happens now? I'm sure the two of you would love to punish me for something or another."
"Well first of all you are going back to the Academy to finish out the season and then if you wish to quit you can however you should move back home. If you want to pursue your career in killing people for the hell of it at least you should be getting paid for it."
"But I quit the Academy; I can't just walk back in there like I didn't."
"Davenport will let you finish. Hell he doesn't want to lose you at all; why do you think he called me?"
I stop and think about it and honestly the only thing that runs through my mind is the fact that he is probably getting paid a shit load of money from my dad to keep me and that's the only reason in hell he would even think about keeping my ass.
I notice the look in my mom's eyes; that drive of passion. "Vi...you can't give up dance. You were born to do it. You will regret it. Listen to us for once. Go back and give it your all when the season is over then decide on whether or not you want to end it."
"Fine...I will go back on one condition...no more spying on me. You tell Eli to stand down and you let me live my life the way I want to. You make it clear to him that I never, ever want to see him again."
"Vi..." my dad starts to argue with me but I shut him down fast.
"No...you want me to finish the season, fine I will but these are the terms."
"OK then...you will get what you want. You are already late to practice you better get on out of here."
