7. (Tobirama)
"I heard what you did."
I looked up from the paperwork on my desk. Not now... I had slept badly the past night, and just wanted to be left alone with the aftermaths of the case of the bank CEO and his former employee.
But Helena couldn't know that. She walked up to my desk and sat down on top of it. I looked up at her, her face mild, her arms crossed over her chest. She hadn't sat down on my desk since we were a couple.
"Hi", she said. "I'm signed up for a new case."
"How does it make you feel?" I asked. "Leaving your old case behind?"
She sighed.
"I know I was only part of it for less than one-third of the time it's been going on. But eight years is a long time. Even if the case began twenty-five years ago."
She had been assigned the case of a lost baby. The baby had been one year old, and had slept in the bedroom of the mother and father. They had a large villa, and slept with the window open on the ground floor, deeming it safe as they were in the same room. Then one morning, the baby had been gone. There had been no traces, no clues, no DNA, no jealous exes... It had been a huge media case, but after twenty-five years, the case needed to be dismissed.
"I understand", I said. Helena had been very invested.
"Enough about me", she said. "I heard about yesterday night. I've seen footage. It's going viral online. It was a smart move", she said. "Impressive", she added as an afterthought.
"I don't want to go viral. Nor am I trying to impress you."
She looked hurt. I felt guilty, but tried to talk myself out of it. You don't want to talk to her. That's a valid enough reason to be short.
"What's up your ass this morning?" she asked.
"Hello!"
It was the young officer with blonde curls that had asked me out yesterday. The timing was unbearably funny. I looked meaningfully at Helena, one eyebrow raised. She frowned, not understanding this in-joke I had with myself.
"Hi", I said darkly.
"Umm, I'm here to ask you..." I captured his eyes and didn't let go of it with my icy stare. I knew I made quite the impression with my large stature, my broad shoulders, my pigment-less hair and eerie eyes, and I intended to use that to the fullest. It was working. "Umm... I... I wonder if... If..."
I took my glass of water I had next to me, took a sip while looking at blondie underneath my white fringe. That had exactly the effect I wanted; he couldn't speak anymore. To my surprise, Helena took over, which actually made me slightly disappointed as I had been enjoying myself immensely. The poor blonde boy looked like he would melt into a puddle.
"There's a new case", Helena said, standing up from the desk again. Just like that, the little moment was gone. "I'm on it. Josh here is on it." She indicated blondie with her head. "And after previous night, they want you on it, too."
"Sure", I said, the thought of teaming up with Helena exciting me even if it shouldn't. "What do they want me to investigate?"
"Nothing", Helena said. "They want you out in the field."
I frowned. The leaders knew I desired to work behind my desk. And that was probably where Helena would be as well; at the station, working behind the scenes. What was the point of sharing a case if we would be apart?
"Why?" I asked.
"It's a very, very dark place, Tobirama." I jerked at her using my name. It did something to me. "Nobody wants to do it."
"What makes them think I want to do it?" I asked, leaning my elbows on my desk, putting my fingertips together, leaning my chin on my hands.
"Because you have a heart of gold."
There was amicable irony in her voice, but we both knew exactly what she meant; I could never say no to something if it involved helping people, especially not when I was the last one standing.
I turned to blondie.
"How about you? Josh, was it? Are you on the team?"
He jerked.
"Oh.. Umm..." He was blushing. Cute. "Yes. I've volunteered to be on the team as well. In the field. I..." He scratches his head. "Would feel better if you were on because then we would be a team."
I noticed Helena looking at me. I captured her eyes. She raised one eyebrow, the corner of her mouth twitching; she'd noticed the poor boy had a crush on me. Then, her face changed. Is he a threat? I don't think so, I thought to myself. I liked women.
I leaned back. "Fine", I said. "I'll try. But if I don't like it, I'm out."
"Lucky you're good enough to be able to make those choices", Helena said.
I didn't latch on.
"So what's the plan?"
"Information gathering undercover", Helena said, and I sighed. I hated that part, because it meant beating put in terrible situations without the possibility to intervene. "You and Josh will go posing as potential clients. Say you want to have a look around before you decide anything. It's the most expensive place in the city, one of the most expensive places in the country, even. We want to know about the people working there. Are they there on their own accord, or are we talking about trafficking? Rumours say there's eight women and one boy."
"A boy?"
"Yes, and he's the most expensive one of all."
"And why do we need information gathering in this case?" I asked.
"There's weapons involved. Highly skilled gang members around at all times. The owner of the place is some sort of gang leader."
I whistled. It still blew me away that things like this still existed outside of films.
"Out of curiosity", I asked. "The most expensive bordello in the country. The most expensive person there... The boy? How much does it cost?"
Helena crossed her arms.
"Thirty thousand dollars a night."
I just stared.
Then, I whistled.
Later that afternoon, I was washing my hands in the men's restroom when the door opened.
"Oh..." It was Josh. "Hi", he said.
I smiled a little. "Hi."
He stood still, scratched his head, had apparently forgotten what you were supposed to do in the men's restroom.
"Umm, I'm happy that you... You know, ehh-"
I took two steady strides towards him, forced him up against the wall without touching him and put one hand on the tiles, framing him with my big arm. He looked at my arm in horror, then at my face. He wasn't short by any means, but I still towered over him quite a bit. I smirked.
"I won't bite", I said.
Then, I bent forwards and bit his neck a little.
"Ahhh!!" he moaned.
I let my lips linger, slowly disconnected them, leaving a trail of my saliva.
"At least not hard", I whispered into his ear.
Then, I turned and left.
