Chapter 3: Candlelight & Champagne

The morning light penetrated through the sheer curtains of the windows in River's bedroom. He knew it was still early because from the distance he could hear the kids walking across the fields to get to school. Last night was a long one when River couldn't catch a minute of sleep, it was only until dawn hit that he found himself dozing off. But that didn't last long either because his alarm rang and it was time to get up.

River rolled out of bed and crossed the room to go straight to the bathroom to freshen up. He showered and shaved which never took him long. He didn't bother wearing a suit today and grabbed a turtleneck sweater and jeans to go with his jacket. He grabbed his wristwatch off the table and he knew that everyone was probably eating breakfast right about now.

River climbed down the stairs of his cabin, which was fairly simple and he liked it clean so he didn't have fix it every day. River grabbed his keys off the table by the door and walked out into the fresh winter morning. The air was cold and the light reflected off the white snow that laid generously on the wide fields. River left his porch and went to the cabin right next to his, which belonged to his twin. Ryder knew the routine and he was usually waiting outside by this time. River was just about to open the front door when he heard a loud thud and a few grunts followed after.

The door abruptly opened and Ryder clambered out.

"You're late," alleged River.

Ryder cocked a grin as he fixed his boot. "I slept late last night."

River walked off and his twin followed. Their heavy boots crunched the snow under them and they left a trail of their path behind as they crossed the field towards the large manor.

"So, what's the plan for today?" Ryder asked his brother.

"I'm going with Gabriel," River told him. "You can stay and help Hunter and Azura with the pack."

"Sounds good," replied Ryder. "Vincent texted saying Bone made waffles."

They got up the porch to the house and the door was unlocked, so they just went inside. As always, everyone was still sitting around the kitchen table.

"Look who decided to show up," Viola remarked from the table. "A bit late for you two."

"Ryder decided to sleep in," River remarked and the others laughed.

Ryder groaned. "Never let your brother be your boss," he announced. "They're a pain in your ass." River rolled his eyes and took a seat at the table.

"Gabriel's my boss and we have a splendid time, don't we?" Vincent jested to his big brother.

Gabriel's fork froze mid-way. "If by splendid time, you mean me berating you to get your shit done, then yeah, fucking fantastic," he retorted.

Vincent gaped at him. "You're no better at work than I am," he told him and Gabriel nodded in agreement.

Viola laughed at both her brothers. "You all can have a fun day annoying the hell out of each other," she wished with sarcasm.

"What are you so happy about?" Hunter remarked. "Your brother is your boss too."

Viola put her hand on her waist glaring down at Hunter. "Speak for yourself, my boss happens to be an angel," she said. "Isn't that right- Hailey, Bone?"

Hailey and Bone looked up from their food. "Klaus is definitely the best boss anyone can ask for," Hailey said making Klaus smile.

"He's a lot better than my last employer," added Bone.

"I think we can all agree that Klaus is better than King," said Sabrina with a chuckle. "His temper and moods are not anyone's cup of tea."

No one could disagree with that at the table.

"Speaking of which, where is King?" asked Ryder as he sat at the table.

"Asleep," added Klaus.

Ryder looked at his twin. "Why don't you ever scold King for being late?" he questioned.

River shrugged. "I don't need to," he said. "King never messes around like you."

"Alright, you two, calm down," Gabriel said as Bone brought them two plates with waffles. "Just eat and you'll be a lot less cranky."

"While I enjoy your morning fights so much, it's time for us to head out too," said Viola. Hailey and Bone followed Viola to the door.

River wondered what was wrong with Klaus who seemed a bit worried, which was rare for him. River nudged Gabriel's foot but Gabriel looked back at him confused, it was until River motioned towards Klaus that Gabriel's expression fell stern. Once Hailey, Bone, Viola and Klaus all left the house that the remaining members spoke about what bothered Klaus. Although, it didn't take rocket science for River to see through them.

"It's about Ender, isn't it?" said River.

The table went quiet.

Sabrina let out a breath. "He's still the same as the day he arrived," she said.

Everyone held a grim expression, although it was Gabriel who seemed to be smiling over his cup of juice.

"I'm worried about him," Vincent frowned. "I'm afraid he might snap one day."

"Well, what do we do about someone who's too scared to even look at us let alone talk?" asked Ryder.

"Want to tell us the reason behind your smiling?" Hunter asked what everyone was thinking.

Gabriel's smile turned to an amused chuckle. "Ender reminds me of some of my wolves," he looked up at the twins.

Suddenly, the door opened and they all jerked in surprise thinking maybe Klaus came back. Distracting themselves with their food, they tried to look as natural as possible.

"Damn, it's cold outside," a familiar voice echoed and right away they sighed in relief. Azura arrived in her big black fur jacket and matching fluffy hat.

"You scared us, Z!" Vincent yelled from across the doorway.

"Good, that means I still got it," she declared proudly as she sauntered into the kitchen and sat down with them only to catch the mood. "What's with the doom and gloom?" she asked as she took a bite from Ryder's plate. They continued to talk about Ender and Azura was quick to give her opinion about that matter, like all things.

Azura was a fighter through and through. She had remarkable combat skills and she was one of the few who had control over her wolf, which was an undeniable asset to a fight. She was a strong woman who took her duties of head security at Centauri pack with upmost respect and honour.

River remembered the night she was found at their gate. He would know since he was the one who found her and informed Gabriel. However, as much as River insisted that she could be a threat or some type of ploy to ruse Gabriel, he didn't believe him. Gabriel was quick to get her inside and help her. And like all hasty decisions that Gabriel made, this was one of the good ones. Azura had and has been loyal to Gabriel since the day she arrived and it was fair to say that she would die for him. She proved her loyalty for the years she worked with them and River would trust her with his own life too. That's all that mattered to him, he didn't a shit about the details.

That's how he was when King Vitiello joined their pack. Yes, he was Klaus's mate. But that didn't excuse him from being put under investigation. King's past wasn't a secret and he was known in the shifter world for being a lone wolf who only cared for himself and his needs. However, after mating with Klaus he had changed for the better. He now joined Gabriel and helped Zero in many missions with his connections to the Underworld.

Vincent got up while looking down at his watch. "We should head out," he said.

"Isn't King coming today?" Hunter asked them.

"No, he can have the day off" said Gabriel.

Azura and Ryder followed suit after him. Hunter cuddled his son and left him in Sabrina's care since she was mostly home now that she's pregnant. River and Gabriel followed after them when Sabrina came out to close the door.

"Make sure you come home early," she told Gabriel but was looking at both of them.

River raised a brow in confusion.

"Don't tell me you already forgot?" she remarked. "Dinner. Tonight, with my friend. Ring a bell?"

"We'll be on time," Gabriel said as he kissed her cheek.

"We?" River intervened. "I never agreed to host with you two." Sabrina and Gabriel shared a rather bemused smile that River didn't like at all. He crossed his arms and stalked off.

Sabrina chuckled. "Bye, honey," she said to Gabriel. "Bye River! See you tonight!"

Gabriel joined his friend's side. "I'm not coming," River told him.

"Don't be like that," he said. "It'll be fun."

River rolled his eyes because if he got a dollar for every time Gabriel said that, he'd be the king of the damn universe.

He drove them to work and they arrived on time at the company, which was the legacy of the Centauri bloodline. Not many knew but Centauri Enterprise was founded by Gabriel's mother until she let the seat go and passed it over to her mate in order to raise her children. Many knew the company to be in Robert's name and that he maintained its' prestigious title that it was known as now. River knew the truth though. The one who had secured the throne to this incredible wealth was Gabriel and he established the unbreakable bonds with the rest of the city's alphas. Dealing with packs wasn't easy for anyone and it was impossible to unite them since many alphas are stubborn and have an ego as big as the fucking ocean.

River has seen many alphas fall because they were too prideful and majority of those alphas were the ones that plotted against Gabriel. Of course, no one has been able to succeed in their plans to harm Gabriel. River would never let that happen.

"Let's get coffee before we go upstairs," said Gabriel.

River followed him through the large glass doors of the company. Right across the massive white lobby was a café where employees went to enjoy their morning dose of caffeine or their lunch in the afternoon. Thankfully, since it was still early, there wasn't a line to wait in. River and Gabriel stood side by side as the young barista Emily finished preparing coffee for the other two customers.

River couldn't help when his eyes tracked every movement around them. They stood patiently in the line, but with every person that made the smallest move he caught it. He made sure that the security team was covering the main doors and whenever someone left the doors and arrived he noted it all.

"Sabrina and I decided on something," Gabriel began.

River looked ahead. "What's that?" he asked although his eyes were up front.

"We wanted to make you and Ryder our kid's godfathers," said Gabriel.

River's head snapped around and he gaped at him. "What?" He couldn't believe it.

"Don't look so shocked, it was obvious that I was going to pick you," said Gabriel.

River shook his head. "No, it wasn't," he said. "Why would you pick us when you have so many siblings?"

Gabriel frowned at him. "You're my brother and so is Ryder," he affirmed.

"Did Sabrina agree to this too?" asked River.

Gabriel smiled now. "She was the one who suggested it," he said before he got cut off by Emily.

"Good morning, Mr. Centauri and River," she beamed at them.

"Hey, Emily," Gabriel said and River smiled at her. "Can we get two dark roasts please."

"Sure," she clicked away on the flat screen in front of her. "That'll be four dollars and fifty cents."

Gabriel fished out ten bucks from his wallet and gave it to her.

"I don't think you should make a hasty decision about this," cautioned River. "This is your child we're talking about and the future heir to all of this-" Emily handed back the change and Gabriel just put the five bucks into the tip jar- "also I'm not great with handling kids."

Gabriel chuckled. "You were great with my siblings when they were young," he pointed out. "And what's going to happen when you have your own kids-"

"That's not happening-" he interrupted as they moved to the other side of the table to receive their order.

"What about when you mate?" Gabriel baited, it was clear when he did that because his golden eyes would gleam with interest.

"That's not happening either," said River. That woman's face from the street flashed inside his head and he pushed it away quickly.

Gabriel crossed his arms. "Why are you against it?" he asked.

"I have a whole list," he remarked. "I'll email it to you."

Gabriel chuckled. "You're crazy," he muttered.

Emily brought their two cups of coffee and wished them a good day, so did they for her. She was a good kid and always worked hard here serving coffee to everyone. No one ever got mad at Emily because she was just that good as brewing coffee. Even if someone did, River would probably beat the shit out of them. They left the cafe and went towards the elevators.

"I hope it's not because of me," said Gabriel as he clicked the glowing round button. "I've already took too much from you."

The elevator doors pinged open and they entered.

"What are you talking about?" River said.

"I know how much you didn't want this life," said Gabriel. "I honestly regret even asking of it from you."

"You didn't force shit and you know it," said River. "Protecting you and our pack was my choice."

"Then don't make that the reason you don't want to mate," said Gabriel.

River didn't know what to say. Mating was complicated and it made one vulnerable and open- too accessible. He didn't want to reveal himself that way and become weak to the bond that consumes wolves once it's accepted. There would be an overwhelming need to mate once a wolf found his mate and River wasn't sure if he'd restrain himself if he gave in to that animalistic urge. He could hurt her and he couldn't risk it. Besides, he enjoyed being alone a little too much. His own company was all he really needed and if someone invaded his space, it irked him. What would he even do with a mate? She would want things from him and he wasn't one to look at for it- no one ever called him a romantic.

"I'm honoured that you picked Ryder and I," River diverted the topic. "But I was going to protect your kid regardless of any title."

Gabriel smiled warmly at him. "I know and thank you-" the elevator doors pinged open at the top floor- "but don't change the subject."

River rolled his eyes and strode out first. "You know what, why don't you just ignore my love life and focus on your work," he remarked.

"You getting a love life is my work," replied Gabriel. "I'll drop it for now though because we've got shit to do."

"How gracious of you," River's tone dripped with sarcasm.

They dropped the topic for the rest of the day... until it hit five o'clock and Gabriel decided that they should head home.

The dinner was already being prepared, and they knew that, because Sabrina sent multiple texts and photos of the chaos in the house. She had everyone cleaning up the living room and arranging the dining table with candles and fresh flowers. The usual suspects were in the kitchen working hard as their mates were being put to work too. River had no idea who was coming for dinner and honestly, he didn't care. All he knew that it was Sabrina's friend and that's it. Maybe, he should've done a background check on this Zoya Knightley person, so he wasn't apprehensive.

"Sabrina said that she was friends with Zoya Knightley," River spoke to Gabriel who was with his secretary Cassie signing some document. "What happened that they split up?"

Gabriel looked up from the papers. "Zoya moved to Greece," he said.

"Why?" inquired River, it was quite suspicious to him.

"I don't know," said Gabriel. "You can ask her when she comes."

River scoffed. "I doubt I'll even show up at all," he muttered but Gabriel heard him loud and clear.

"Sabrina wants you there," he said. "You won't disappoint her, will you?"

River stiffened in his seat. This sucked, he hated social gatherings of any sorts. What was he supposed to do? he wondered. But he loved his pack and he'd do anything for Sabrina and it didn't help his case now that she was pregnant.

"Why do I get emotionally blackmailed when she's having your baby?" he retorted curtly.

"Because you're the overly-protective and doting uncle," alleged Gabriel.

"He definitely will be," agreed Cassie.

River groaned. Something told him that Gabriel's pup was going to cause him loads of trouble just like his parents. He wasn't ready for any of it.

Cassie closed the files mid-way and took them from Gabriel. "I'll leave the rest for tomorrow," she said. "You should head home if you want to make it on time."

Gabriel stood up grabbing his jacket to put on. "Thank you. Have a great night, Cassie," he said.

"You too, sir," she smiled. "Have fun, River."

River heard the amused mockery in her tone. "I will feed you to the sharks," he said.

"You mean wolves," she corrected.

"No, I quite literally mean sharks," he said making her laugh.

"Stop threatening her and let's going," Gabriel said.

They went down to the elevators back to the lobby floor and headed towards the car. The sky was dark although it was only mid-day, but all street lights flickered on to help drivers navigate through the slippery roads. There was a gentle fall of snow tonight and slowly everything was turning white again. River got in the car with Gabriel and turned the ignition on before setting off into the traffic.

Even though traffic was hell, they arrived at the pack territory just on time. The main gates opened and River parked outside the manor.

Both of them went to the house and it was opened by the small boy with a wary expression. "Everyone was busy," he said.

Gabriel smiled down at Ender. "It's fine," he said. "Thank you for opening the door."

Ender moved aside and let them inside. River locked the door for him and Ender quickly escaped back to Klaus's side in the kitchen. That was when Sabrina came running down the stairs in a pale pink dress and her chocolate brown hair curled perfectly.

"You two made it on time," she clapped her hands together and beamed at them.

Gabriel went in for a hug, but she rushed right past him and into the kitchen asking how the dinner was getting along.

River couldn't hold it in, he laughed at the man. "You deserved that," he remarked.

Gabriel frowned. "I'll get her back for that," he grumbled.

Sabrina came rushing back out. "Zoya texted that she'll be here in a few more minutes," she told them. "River, can you please wait for her and bring her into the house. It's snowing a lot and I don't want her to slip."

River opened his mouth to protest, but he froze when he saw Sabrina's bright aqua eyes looking up at him. He turned the way he came and stepped out of the house to wait for this infamous guest.

And exactly like Sabrina said, moments went by when a beautiful Rolls Royce rolled in through the gates and for some reason River tensed. The car parked and he knew that she could see him standing near the porch, but he didn't budge.

The ignition of the car turned off and a few moments later the door opened. A leg appeared that was bare; only a diamond heel glinted off the lights. River braced, all the muscles in his body stiffened and the air was sucked out of his lungs. For some reason, he couldn't move his eyes. A darkness seeped into him with a dangerous intent and River hadn't even realized when his wolf emerged out of his slumber. The pheromones around River grew to a wild storm and they were seeking out this woman who had appeared.

River bit his urges back and his hands gripped the railing, his knuckles turning pale and strained. The blood that coursed through his veins turned scorching hot like molten lava pumped through him. All that heat twisted his heart and it started to slow down as if everything in him didn't want to miss a single second.

A soft chime caught his attention and he saw a woman emerge from inside the car. The glint of her silver earring was what he saw first, it was multiple crystals hanging together in a cluster. His eyes trailed down to her lean neck, that had a delicate chain of diamonds and he had the urge to taste her skin with them on her. Her lashes casted a heavy shadow from the dim lights, but they surrounded the most reverberating blue eyes he had ever seen, they shifted from the serene sea, they darkened and deepened with every graceful move, the flecks of light heightened the vivid silver that swam in the aquamarine. Her lips were a soft shade of rose, plump and glossy and they'd even taste sweet too, he guessed. He studied the contours of her face, the same one that had once before caught his sight.

Her warm fragrance mixed with a slight hint of lilies and wisteria swam around him, teasing him to take a taste but he resisted, he wasn't going to act that desperate. However, those regal eyes and that luscious mouth. He knew her. She was that same woman from that time with that incident with the puppy under this car.

Fuck, he cursed as his eyes shut. You've got to be kidding me. Why did the universe love to play with his head? River really didn't understand.

He heard the sound of another door and he saw that she had grabbed a few bags from the back of the car. She was careful not to let her dress or coat get caught when she closed the door with her hip. She grabbed all the bags in one hand and then pushed her long hair away from her face over her shoulder.

He wondered why she had suddenly frozen in the spot, she was looking in her hands and back into the car. River grew tired of waiting and went to her now. By then she had already opened the front door and she was bent inside.

"Need help?" he asked behind her, but that only backfired. She jolted in surprise and her foot slipped. She slammed into the steering wheel and cried out, he felt her pain stab through him.

River reached down and put his arm around her before she slammed her head on the door with her poor attempt to stand up. He gathered her off the seat and pulled her out of the car to face him.

"You scared me," she huffed.

Finally, her tender eyes looked at him. River's whole body tightened and he felt himself respond to her with every nerve inside him.

Her eyes widened. "It's you," she astounded.

River was tediously glad that she remembered him. "What are you trying to get from inside the car that you'd risk breaking your neck?" his tone was low.

Instead of getting offended, she smiled. "My purse," she told him. "Can you grab it for me?" she showed him her hands that were full.

River helped enough women around this pack to know that their purse was part of their outfit and too important to leave behind. He sighed but he reached inside and saw the small white clutch on the passenger seat. He grabbed it from the silver chain and brought it out. She showed him her arm and he realized that she wanted him to put it on her.

He did.

"Thanks," she said.

"I'll take you inside," said River when he saw that she was about to say something else. "Sabrina's waiting for you."

"How do you know, Sabrina?" she asked as she walked alongside him to the front door.

"She's the alpha-female of this pack and my best friend's mate," he told her.

"And when will you tell me your name?" she said with a tease in her tone.

He locked eyes with her. "River," he said and that made her smile.

"Hi, River, I'm Zoya-" she stepped into his space letting him sense her wisteria fragrance- "it's nice to meet you again." River felt a pit grow in his stomach, but her sweet charm filled it up.

The door burst open and Zoya was taken inside leaving River wondering over what the hell he was getting himself into with this woman who was too wicked for anyone's good.

"River, aren't you coming?" Klaus said from the door.

River contemplated whether or not this was a good idea. However, it was already too late. His wolf crawled out of the dark and had already locked its gaze on that woman.

"Yeah, I'm coming," he sighed and gave in.

Klaus closed the door and there was no going back now.

Sabrina was ecstatic to meet her old friend and she quickly introduced Zoya Knightley to the entire family. Everyone was here to enjoy Hailey, Klaus and Bone's cooking, so the house was pretty full. River expected Zoya to be overwhelmed by everyone's presence but she was a natural with the crowd. She held herself proudly with a sensual air of confidence and her smile was warm, River could tell that it wasn't a fake one. She took off her long coat revealing her silk white dress that had a slit running up her lean leg.

Zoya was taken to the living room since she seemed enthusiastic to show Sabrina her gifts. River didn't go to the room with the rest of them. He lingered in the kitchen with Bone and Klaus and Hailey who were busy preparing dinner. Ender was sitting at the breakfast table reading a book and he seemed keen not to be noticed either. That made two of them.

River knew Sabrina and Gabriel needed no help hosting a friend, it was second nature to both of them. Besides, Vincent, Viola and Ryder were more than enough to keep the group entertained.

From the kitchen counter, River couldn't make out much of their conversation. The only thing he heard was Zoya's laugh when one of them told a joke or story. She was sweet but the cunning spark that she showed him had subsided, like she only had it for him.

"Aren't you going to join them?" Hailey asked River.

"No," said River as he faced Hunter's mate. Hailey was dressed in a short blue dress that matched her eyes. "I'm not in the mood."

"I can tell that from a mile away," remarked Hailey. "What's got you in so many knots?"

River looked to the other room when their eyes locked and he felt her gaze punch his gut. He didn't look away neither did he falter, he waited until she had. But she hadn't, it was only because Sabrina sat down beside Zoya that their eyes broke their lock.

"River?" Hailey called out to garner his attention.

"I just rather be in bed," he told her.

Hailey raised a brow and for a moment he wondered if she caught on. But she patted his shoulder in support. "Food will cheer you up," she said before Bone called for her help.

River didn't know about that, but he grabbed a beer off the table and chugged that to help his nerves. The group in the living room continued their scintillating gossip about their wedding and Sabrina's baby shower.

River finished off half his beer when King entered the kitchen. He was dressed casually in a black and red shirt with black linen trousers. The open buttons exposed all his tattoos on his chest and neck, which he was proud to show off. He was rolling up the sleeves when he caught River's eyes.

"Why do I get the feeling you hate this as much as I do?" King whispered to him with a glum expression.

River raised his beer to that.

Klaus came up to his mate. "You know you care just as much as we all do since you both showed up. So, behave."

River looked back to King's expression that turned from gloomy to a sweet smile. Klaus had that effect on him, it was like King only cared for Klaus and his needs but everything else could go to Hell- quite literally. River really wondered if having a mate did that or if being in love just made anyone different.

King kissed Klaus's cheek and whispered something that made Klaus blush. "We'll behave, won't we, River?" jested King.

"River's always well-behaved," added Hailey.

"We all know who the real troublemaker is," jested Bone with a muffled snicker.

King wrapped his arms behind Klaus and propped his chin on his shoulder. "Am I a troublemaker, honey?" he asked with a boyish pout.

Klaus clearly fell for the trick when guilt wiped over his face. "No, you're not," he said supportively.

King grinned but only the three of them saw it. He then proceeded to prove how mischievous he really was. Jokingly, he bit Klaus's neck making the poor guy jolt out of alarm. Klaus pulled away with his hand on his neck and gaped at his mate.

"You- you," Klaus was at a loss of words.

"I'm only trouble for you, baby," King's smile grew and he walked away into the living room to greet their guest and everyone else.

Klaus raked his hair and huffed; "He always gets me."

Bone and Hailey sympathized for him. River, on the other hand, understood why King does what he did. For years, King had suffered in the harsh reality of this world. Born an orphan, he had to fight for himself for as long as he lived. The man battled in cage fights and was a slave to abuse and torture. He raised himself out of the darkness and tried to make himself good enough to be respected and even feared in this world that forsake him long ago. King had a ruthless reputation and he wasn't known for a merciful attitude, in fact, it was the opposite. He was far from a gentleman although he dressed like one. However, it was naive to fall for his good looks because under those sapphire eyes, wicked smile and dangerous tattoos was a predator who knew thousands of ways to kill someone.

Although, King was a changed man now that he met Klaus. He didn't have to be on guard of every moment of the day. He didn't have to assess the threats alone and he didn't have to go to sleep with nightmares to haunt his sleep. There was no need for him to look over his shoulder in case someone tried to kill him. He was out of the darkness and the one who pulled him out was Klaus.

River still found it hard to believe how much King changed merely because he fell in love. King devoted himself to his mate, so it was clear that King would do anything to bring a smile to Klaus's lips. Well, King made sure to tease Klaus at any chance he got too.

Sabrina appeared in the kitchen. "They got through the champagne bottle already," she said.

"Dinner's ready, so I'd hold off on opening another one," Bone told her.

"Oh, that's great, I'm starving," said Sabrina.

"We should move everyone to the dining room," added Klaus.

The commotion grew when Sabrina and Klaus prepared everyone to move to the dining room, that was big enough to fit the large group.

River couldn't avoid this now, so he gathered himself and went to the room to join them. He sat with Gabriel and Zoya was on the other side sitting between Sabrina and Hailey. The candles scattered down the long table created a soft glow in the room that gleamed on her skin and warmed her smile.

It was only until they all started plating their food, that River realized he was starving. He put his portions on his plate and began to eat. They talked about the Institute and then Zoya's company. She told them about her travels around the world and that she lived in Greece for a while. River wondered what brought her back and if she was staying? He didn't ask though. He didn't want to interrupt her, it was easy for her to talk to them and she was a natural with her stories.

However, the whole time she never once looked at him like she purposely kept her eyes averted. River did otherwise. He looked through the long candles on the candelabra to see her eyes. He could tell when she grew excited from the way her eyes gleamed brightly. She showed everything on her face, it left him imagining if she'd blush and if the colour would be visible on her cheeks.

River hid his expression with his wine glass and forced himself to look away. However, that was when he caught Gabriel's gaze and he stiffened.

"What?" River whispered.

Gabriel shrugged a shoulder. "Nothing," he said and turned away.

Shit, River cursed. Gabriel saw more than he intended and that was never a good thing.

-Zoya's POV-

Zoya was controlling herself to the point that her heart was hammering inside her chest. She could clearly see that River was watching her, it was blatantly obvious and it was killing her. She wished that she could tell him that she could see what he was doing. However, Zoya bit back her desires and calmly enjoyed dinner with the Centauri pack. Who turned out completely different from what she imagined and from what the world painted them as in the news.

The Centauri pack was an infamous legion of wolves who ruled the shifter world because they were powerful in numbers and loyalty. The alpha of this pack was known to rule with an iron-clad and he had a ruthless reputation. She never thought in a million years that the Gabriel Centauri would be happily drinking wine and eating dinner with his pack and her. On top of that, the young model that worked with Zoya on a wedding campaign was now the alpha-female of the Centauri pack and pregnant with the alpha's child. Life really surprised Zoya since she returned to New York.

Zoya met Sabrina years ago before any of their careers reached the peak that they are at now. Back then, Zoya was searching for a fresh face and Sabrina walked into casting interview. Zoya cancelled all castings after and hired Sabrina on the spot and she never regretted that decision. They become good friends after that day too and worked quite a lot together, until Zoya moved away. She really regretted dropping everything and leaving like that because she missed her friend's wedding. However, there was no need to wallow about the past. She was glad that she was here now to celebrate with Sabrina's pregnancy news.

She was quite surprised when she got a call from an unknown number and it ended up being Sabrina. She never expected that, but frankly it was the best thing that happened since she arrived here. Apart from adopting a puppy. She was going to bring him tonight, but he didn't seem enthusiastic when she brought him out. The last thing she wanted to do was force the little guy, so she left him to explore and rest. However, she wasn't one to be over-protective- only the few dozen cameras in her house allowed her to keep an eye on him through her phone. Yup, nothing over-protective about that... right?

"Thank you for the dinner," she looked at the three chefs sitting around her. "The roast was exceptional. It's been hard getting a decent meal when your busy with work."

The man with kind-hearted green eyes smiled at her. "We are happy to cook any time," he told her.

There was a calm aura around Klaus Centauri. Maybe, it was the charm in his emerald eyes or the way he the soft curve of his smile. There was a blaze of warmth in him and she understood why the man who sat next to Klaus was enchanted. King introduced himself to her and she had sensed his wolf from across the room. It didn't feel as if he was hiding at all that he was a dangerous wolf, although around Klaus the man was completely different.

Everyone seated around the table had something different about them, she admired every quality. Yet, there was a strong bond between them that made her heart ache. She sensed that each and every one of them found themselves in this pack. Zoya didn't think that was possible, she always had a negative view of packs in the past. She never approved of the whole monarch within a pack of how an alpha ruled the wolves and they must abide by them. Although, sitting amongst this group at this table, Zoya felt nothing but love and compassion. Every wolf would follow their alpha not out of fear, but loyalty and she could see that Gabriel Centauri really respected them.

The biggest surprise was the man sitting right bedside the alpha. River ate his dinner quietly, but his presence was felt the most. She was across the long table far from him, yet she felt as if she was sitting in front of him and he listened to every word she said. Maybe she was thinking too much into it. Why would he care what she said? She wasn't anything to him and that bothered her beyond her understanding.

And on top of that, River had a twin brother. She was blown away the moment she met Ryder who was nothing like his brother. Ryder was sweet and definitely the type of man who enjoyed a good time with friends. Zoya had never been so bewildered before; the same blue gaze, the same dark hair and nose and lips and even smile. However, there was a distinct difference in their pheromones and even their demeanour. Ryder was warm that definitely proved he was younger than River even by a minute or two. River never showed any expression on his face that let the other know what was on his mind. And even his scent was mysterious like him. She could tell that he held back everything about himself so there was nothing to predict.

Zoya couldn't deny her interest in him. What was he going to do if he knew that she wanted to know him more? Should she tell him? Would he care or even humour her?

Well, she couldn't do anything about it right now with others around them. They'd probably freak out if she out-right asked River on a date. Zoya almost laughed at the notion and was convinced maybe she should try it out. She waited though for the right moment.

After dinner, there was dessert, as the men cleaned all the ladies moved to the living-room with their slices of strawberry shortcake, which Hailey baked. What couldn't the woman do? thought Zoya.

Hailey was beautiful and Zoya had never seen a brighter red than Hailey's hair. Her hair was coiled in long curls around her and it framed her face that had soft features. She had a gentle touch and her mate was a scary man. He was the beta of the pack, Hunter Centauri and only Hailey could make that man look less threatening even with his son in his strong arms.

Hailey was completely opposite from the woman who was lounging back on the chair, like a panther basking under the sun. Azura was a tall and severely stern wolf who would make an exceptional model, if she ever decided for a career change. She had striking silver eyes, a rigid jaw and a toned body that was under her control. She wore all leather and a bunch of gold accessories, she didn't mind showing the guns strapped under her arms either.

And then there was Viola Centauri who had the same air of confidence as her brothers. She had wavy blonde hair, sterling green eyes like Vincent and Klaus. However, there was something about the way she spoke and sat on the chair that reminded Zoya of Gabriel Centauri. It didn't seem like it was hard for Viola as the only girl with four brothers growing up. She owned it and it was clear from the way she stood with her brothers, that she was never bullied by them.

"Zoya, you didn't have to bring gifts," Sabrina said. "I didn't want to pressure you like that."

Zoya looked to her friend's kind eyes. "And here I'm thinking I brought less," she astounded. "If I knew all these beautiful ladies would be here, I would have brought a dress for all of you." She grabbed the gift off the table and took out the staple white box with the silver ribbon that wrapped every dress that came from White Knight. She opened it up and revealed the mint-green gown that went perfectly with Sabrina's aquamarine eyes.

The ladies around them gasped and their forks dropped too.

"That's gorgeous," astounded Viola.

Sabrina grabbed the gown by the straps. "It's too beautiful to wear, Zoya," she said hugging the dress close and Zoya felt relief she liked it.

"You should wear it for your baby shower, Sabrina," said Hailey.

"I will if Zoya agrees to come," Sabrina said.

"You don't need to ask," Zoya answered. "I'll be happy to join you if that's what you want and if Hailey is baking more cake than that's even better." The girls laughed.

They finished off their cake slices and Hailey had packed more slices for Zoya to take home with her.

"You all should visit White Knight," Zoya told the girls.

"We should invite Ashley, Rosalie and Evangeline too," suggested Viola and the girls went into planning.

Zoya didn't know who those three were and it was only possible to gather a few details from them. She didn't mind meeting new people here, it would be better than being alone on her weekends off.

"We can get lunch after," said Sabrina. "It's a date then, Zoya."

"I'll text you when we can arrange this," said Zoya. "Just let me know when you guys are free."

After that, Hailey went to check on the boys in the kitchen, Azura went to get more cake and Viola joined to get champagne. That left Zoya alone with Sabrina and the perfect time to ask what was buzzing around her head all night.

"You told me long ago that you didn't want to be part of any pack. What changed, Sabrina?" Asked Zoya.

Sabrina's eyes softened and the dimple of her cheek showed when she smiled. "This isn't like any other pack, Zoya. This is a family who make your pain and happiness theirs too," she told her. "Every single one of these wolves accepted me with an open heart. You can't find that anywhere else."

Zoya's heart squeezed because she understood that perfectly. Acceptance was hard to come by, but Zoya got by perfectly without anyone because she didn't like being disappointed. Her parents were enough to show her that blood didn't mean family.

"I don't know if I have the right to say this, but I'm happy for you, Sabrina," she said.

Sabrina's smile widened. "You could always join us too," she jested making Zoya laugh.

"Another question," she said.

"Shoot," Sabrina leaned on the couch and focused on her.

"Is River a cologne or flowers kind of guy?" she asked and Sabrina's mouth dropped open making Zoya laugh.

"Hold on! Wh- what-" Sabrina was astounded to even form words- "You and River."

"Don't get too excited. I'm just curious about him," she said and she still had to ask him how he felt. "He's single, right?"

"Yes, but-" Sabrina gathered herself- "I will warn you to be careful. He's not one to shy away from giving anyone the cold-shoulder."

Zoya could see that already since it was happening all night. "It's no problem," she said. She'd have him all the joy life had to offer, that by the time she was done with him, he'd be unrecognizable.

Sabrina ate the last bit of her cake as Zoya looked down at her phone and saw the time, it was getting late. So, it was time to head home which was a bummer since she was having a lot of fun.

"I should head home before it starts to snow again," she said, as she got up with her purse.

They all gathered at the door and Bone brought her coat.

"It was really nice meeting all of you," she smiled at them, her eyes glimpsed to the very back where River stood with his twin. "Thank you for inviting me to your beautiful home."

The faces that were unknown to her in the beginning were a lot more familiar to her now. They were all smiling and thanking her for coming over. Sabrina hugged her close and tightly too. It really was nice to be back in the company of her friend.

Azura opened the door for her and Gabriel was about to show her to her car, when River appeared beside them.

"I'll go," River finally spoke, his deep voice made her skin crawl.

The rest of the family moved to the living room to cover from the cold bite of winter. Zoya put her arms through her coat and joined River outside on the porch.

"Bye, text me when you get home," Sabrina said from behind her.

"I will, and get away from the door, it's too cold for you," said Zoya worrying for the pregnant woman more than she was for herself.

Sabrina waved enthusiastically and Gabriel closed the door convincing her to move too, but now that left Zoya alone with River. Who would have thought that she would find him here of all places? She was more amazed than anything else. What should she do? Play it nice because he was Sabrina's pack mate or should she trap him. Although, something told her that he wouldn't be affected at all by her. He already had a stoic stance and he didn't say a word the entire time they walked to where she had parked her car.

Zoya took out her keys as they neared her car, which was lightly dusted by snow. The car's headlights flashed on as it sensed the keys in her hand and she had pressed the round button on the remote to start the engine. She knew now that this was her last chance to see if anything was between them.

"How is he?" River broke the silence first which surprised her.

She gave him a confused look. "Who?" she asked.

River's blue eyes stared at her deeply. "The puppy," he told her.

"Oh, him," she said. "The doctor said that he's small for his age and malnourished too, but he's doing better."

She didn't know why she thought that maybe River thought she had a man in her life. She took out her phone and clicked on the app with her security cameras. She found the video that showed her living-room. She turned her phone towards River and showed him the live footage of her puppy pawing at a stuffed bunny near the fireplace.

River watched the video carefully, he wasn't dismissive about it even though this dog had nothing to do with him. "He does look a lot better," he said.

Zoya didn't expect that at all, and it was clear that River wouldn't lie or give a fake compliment. There it was, she thought. That genuine warmth she found deep in those icy blue eyes.

"I like you," she declared, it surprised both of them.

River straightened as if he heard her wrong or maybe he was getting ready to bolt. "Excuse me?" his voice was gruff.

"That's it, I've made up my mind," she told him.

River frowned darkly. "About what?" he looked like he regretted asking that.

Zoya was glad she chose to wear her heels, because that gave her that inch of height to match her eyes with his. "About you-" she breathed in his scent and felt it sink into her skin- "I'm going to make you mine." He tensed and he stared at her with a dangerous glare, even though she was smiling at him.

"No," he growled.

Zoya's smile broadened. "I'll change your mind," she said.

"I'm being serious," River's voice grew soft but scarier. "I don't want you or anything between us." Zoya raised a brow at his tone. She just felt like teasing him more. And she did.

She stepped into his space, her feet close to him and her chest mere inches away from his. He seemed to go still, like he was afraid to breath otherwise he'd touch her. The air around them thickened and the cold weather didn't penetrate between the heat. She was almost afraid to know what would happen if she did lay her hands on him or even tasted those lips.

"Stop," he grumbled at her.

Zoya smirked. "What?" she whispered while making sure his eyes were with hers. Although, she admitted that her eyes went to his lips multiple times.

"I won't kiss you, so you should forget about it," he affirmed.

"Don't worry, we still need to go on a few dates before we do anything intimate," she retorted and it was clear from his eyes that he couldn't believe her right now.

"We aren't going on any dates," he affirmed.

"I hadn't even asked you yet, but now that you brought it up... would you care to join me for lunch tomorrow?" she asked. River didn't look amused at all, but she didn't expect him to accept this easily.

"I said no or do you like being rejected a lot," he remarked.

"I've never been rejected in my life. You're the first and that's what makes this fun," she told him boldly.

River cursed under his breath and grabbed the key from her grasp. He unlocked the doors and opened it for her. She put his hand on her arm and nearly pushed her over inside on the seat. She laughed at him and if she wasn't mistaken then she definitely caught the blush on his cheeks.

Before she said anything, he shut the door on her face making her laugh at him.

She rolled the window down which made him roll his eyes. "Are you this rough with everyone?"

"Yes," he snapped at her.

"Hmm, we're going to have to change that," she said. "I can't have you being rough... unless it's in the bedroom of course, then I don't mind."

"Are you going to leave or what?" he barked at her.

"I'll leave, but why haven't you left yet?" she said making him scowl at her tease. Zoya rolled her window up and drove out of the parking lot.

Usually, she would've put the radio on and listened to the music. But she was in such a daze that she hadn't even realized when she arrived to her house...

Sabrina was taking the pillows off the bed and putting them on the couch, but she left the small wolf plushie she won at the carnival long time ago in the middle of the bed. She didn't know if it was because she was pregnant or because this day was busier than usual, but she was exhausted. Although, her exhaustion was forgotten when she remembered this beautiful night. Meeting up with Zoya after so many years made Sabrina really happy. She was glad that Zoya was healthy and living her life well. Zoya was one of the firsts to take a chance on Sabrina when she wasn't famous or even known in the modelling industry. Modelling for White Knight was a crucial career step for Sabrina and Zoya was the reason for it. She owed a lot to her friend for believing in her.

However, she couldn't help the butterflies in her stomach. Zoya asked about River of all people. She knew that Zoya could handle herself, but River wasn't the best with his bedside manners. He was kind and warm to pack members but to strangers he was completely different. Sabrina didn't want him hurting Zoya when she knew that River was one of the sweetest guys here.

Sabrina wondered if she should talk to River about what he'd do if Zoya approached him. Would that be crossing the line? she wondered as she took off her warm socks. She didn't know what to do anymore and sighed in defeat.

Sabrina took a seat on the bed and her hand went to where it has been lured a lot nowadays. Ever since she found out she was pregnant, she stopped taking on too many shows and photoshoots so she could rest and not strain her body or baby. Her hand was on her belly, which barely showed a sign of pregnancy. However, she felt the change in her body take form already. Her wolf was a lot more alert and vicious to keep them safe. Sabrina understood why her wolf was on edge, but now Sabrina was too. She didn't know why she was full with anxiety. Hailey said that it was normal to be scared, but Sabrina didn't like that she was afraid when there was nothing to be afraid of here.

The shower turned off and her mate came out of the bathroom. Gabriel filled out the doorway with his broad frame and Sabrina still lost her breath around him. The anxious ice around her melted when she locked eyes with his and she filled with ease. Her mate took her worries away without a single word, he just had that warmth around him and she loved it- loved him with everything in her. She hadn't even realized that she was smiling now.

"Ready to go to bed?" he asked as he eyed her sitting on his side of the bed.

"Just waiting for you," she said softly.

Gabriel always had a caring gleam in his eyes when he looked at her. He moved around the room going to the closet to grab a pair of slacks, she watched his movements and was comfortable just seeing him with her. Although, she quietly wondered how she should tell him about River and Zoya. But was it even right to reveal something that her friend told her in confidentiality.

"Sweetheart, if you keep staring then I will take that as an invitation," he warned her.

Sabrina blinked with realization. "I know something and I don't know how to tell you," she blurted out.

Gabriel frowned. "Me too," he said.

They both stared at each other confused.

"Is what I'm thinking the same as you?" asked Gabriel.

"I don't know, but I can't tell you because it's confidential," said Sabrina.

"I'm your mate," stated Gabriel.

Sabrina wasn't convinced and then Gabriel crossed the room over to her. His golden eyes darkening over her body and she knew what he was playing at. He was trying to seduce her.

"It's not going to work," she said.

"You sure?" He grinned as his eyes stared at her lips and he bit his own.

She couldn't help but tease him back. Sabrina got to her knees on the bed and she pressed her body against his bare chest while putting her arms around his neck. "Are we really going to play this game?" she jested. "I don't like losing."

"Funny because neither do I," whispered Gabriel as his hands cupped her butt and lifted her to meet his roaring erection against her core.

"This will last all night," she sighed into him.

"Ready for it?"

She was kind of scared now. "Okay, wait. Hold on, Gabriel. Why don't we both say it on three," she offered.

Gabriel shook his head. "You can't back out now, baby," he said as he gently laid her down only to ravish her body all night long.
