Chapter 14: Lunch with the Centauri Pack

Kade stood at the entrance of his house with Alexander and Gabriel Centauri was calling him. Kade lifted his phone and answered the call. "Why are you calling me?" He cut to the chase.

"Good morning to you too," Gabriel's unforgettable voice streamed through the speaker. "I'm inviting you to have lunch with my pack today."

Kade stiffened as he found himself baffled. "Why would you-"

"Is Alec still with you?" Gabriel interrupted. "I'm assuming he is. So, do me a favour and bring him with you."

Kade looked at Alexander who stood before him. The man stood clad in his leather jacket and the golden sun highlighting his bright blue eyes and his jaw that appeared as if it was carved from marble. Kade forced himself to look away and get a grip on himself. "What's the reason for this invitation, Gabriel?"

"You'll know once you get here," Gabriel answered. "Alec knows the way and bring your family."

"I will not-"

"Let me talk to him-" Alec interfered with his hand held out in front of him.

Kade gritted his teeth and passed the phone. Alec's long agile hands that were softer than he imagined touched his hand before he grabbed the phone.

"We'll be there on time," Alec told Gabriel.

Kade raised a brow at him and his furious expression grew harsher. Alec cut the phone and handed it back. "I'm not going and neither is anyone else," he retorted.

"Going against Gabriel is not a smart move, Kade," Alec warned. "He owns this city and you're in his territory, so don't make him your enemy. If he is reaching out to you then you should cooperate."

Kade knew that Alexander wasn't wrong, but he was already second guessing every single fucking decision he ever made. He needed to be alone and harness some control, otherwise he'd spiral in this dark abyss where all there lingered was this intrusive temptation, that was growing and aching inside him.

"Fuck," Kade growled as he pushed the door open and stalked inside.

Alec followed him and a maid closed the door behind them. Dario appeared at the stairs with Nikolai, they were discussing breakfast or work, Kade wasn't listening. But they saw the two of them enter the house and they were confused.

"Where'd you go so early?" Dario asked.

"We met Mikhail," Kade answered. "He's returning to Russia. I'm going to my office. Don't disturb me." He ignored his two friends who were staring at him with questions in their eyes. But he couldn't answer anything right now. He jumped two stairs at a time and made it to his office. He slammed the door behind him and couldn't breathe at all.

Kade threw off his jacket and raked his hands through his hair. He tried to get a grip on himself, forget about this ache inside him. But the chains tightened around his throat and he was losing all over again.

Earlier, Kade slipped a transmitter into Alexander's pocket before he left to have a conversation with Mikhail. He heard the whole thing even the part where Alec called him his friend when clearly, they were not. They were enemies. Kade wanted Alec dead. He craved his blood on his lips and that was it. But why? Why did Alec call them friends? That word was a knife in his chest. They were not fucking friends! He told himself repeatedly like he needed convincing.

Kade paced in front of the table that used to be his father's once. Across the table, he could see his father standing there with his eyes judging Kade for faltering in his plan. Mother, Father, Emilio all died and Mia was tortured. He couldn't forget their pain just because he was finding himself being consumed to this forbidden desire that Alexander brought out of him.

Kade slumped against the table. All of this would've been so much easier if Alexander was a toxic asshole with no morals. However, it wasn't like that. Alexander Waldorf had a soul, a good heart and those tormented eyes that begged to be saved from his prison.

To make matters worse, Kade remembered the conversation they shared last night.

"Can you do it?" Alec asked, his eyes blazing with misery.

Kade didn't understand him, but a part of his heart did. "What?" He was afraid to ask even though his lips moved without his permission.

"Kill me," Alec begged softly, his tone pierced Kade's chest where his heart pounded. "Kill me."

Kade's couldn't control his expression that darkened with turmoil. "Not today," he told him because he wasn't sure what he wanted anymore. He twisted the golden ring on his finger remembering his father.

Alexander laughed, the type of laugh that was raw with agony. Everything inside Kade shattered apart and all he could think of was holding Alec in his arms. He didn't want to kill this man, he wanted to save him...

Kade didn't know what he was thinking anymore. He was losing his goddamn mind and it was all Alexander's fault. The way he smiled with that charm in his playful eyes, his perfectly sculpted body that was made for Kade's hands to devour, it was too much to endure. He found himself falling for this man and his wolf that was just as charming and gentle as Alexander.

"You're the only one that's allowed to kill me." Alec's words rang through Kade's body and it was as if he caught on flames to burn in this man's dark scent and allure.

Kade stood close to him, their bodies trembling in the heat that both of them could sense. He was tumbling into this storm that was destroying him in its wake. Everything that Kade believed about himself crumbled apart. The years of promises vanished when he looked at Alexander. But he couldn't betray his family; Kade lived to avenge them. That vow shackled itself around Kade's throat and tightened every time he'd forget. Even now, that chain had its grip around his neck and he couldn't breathe.

All these voices haunted him.

However, Alec and his brother were good people. Did Kade have the right to destroy them? He didn't know anymore. He shouldn't have prisoned Alexander. He should have killed him when he had the chance because now his hands trembled as he gripped the gun out of its holster.

This never happened to him before. He was always aware of his code and he never faltered from it. But this time, he didn't know what to do. He couldn't kill Alec. He just couldn't do it.

"Fuck," Kade's voice was guttural, he couldn't recognize it.

A timid knock on the door caused him to put the gun away because he knew it was Mia. It opened and Mia poked her head inside.

"Dario said you're back," she said but noticed his grim expression. "Are you okay?"

"No, I'm not," Kade answered truthfully.

Mia's kind eyes softened with concern for him. She walked into the room and closed the door behind her before she came up to him. "What's wrong, Kade?" She placed her hand on his cheek, it was soft and comforting.

Kade closed his eyes painfully. "It's about-" the chain around his throat tightened that he couldn't utter a sound.

"Alec," she spoke gently releasing the tension around him. "It's okay, Kade. I understand."

"I don't," Kade's tone was wretched.

"Alec is a good man," she said.

"Fuck and it's making impossible for me to-" kill him, Kade couldn't even say it to his sister. Everything was against it, even his own body that he thought he had control over.

"You don't have to kill him," Mia smiled at him.

"But after everything," Kade couldn't face his sister. "How can I let them walk free?"

"It pains me to know that you hold onto this hatred," Mia wrapped her arms around him. "Let them go free, Kade. They don't deserve to be killed for something they didn't do."

"I hate this," he gritted out. "I hate that I failed you."

"You didn't," Mia's arms tightened. "I love you and you'll always be my brother."

There was another knock on the door that made Mia let go and step back. Kade raked his hair back and stood to his towering height but he was unable to control the expression on his face.

"Come in," he spoke with a stern tone.

Dario opened the door with his brother.

"What is it?" Kade asked.

"Alec told us about the lunch with the Centauri pack," Dario said. "Is it true?"

Kade completely forgot about that. He looked down at his watch it was almost eleven thirty now. They should probably leave soon. "Yeah, it's true," he said.

"Centauri pack," Mia said. "I didn't know you were aquatinted with them, Kade."

"I'm not," Kade answered. "Alexander knows Gabriel Centauri, they're friends." He crossed his arms and shifted irately.

"Damn," Nikolai remarked. "I didn't know Alec had those type of connections."

"So, that means they're going with you?" Dario asked.

"We're all going, so get ready," Kade explained.

"All of us," Mia said pointing to herself and Kade gave her a curt nod.

"We should head out soon," Kade said as he walked across his office.

Nikolai and Mia seemed equally excited to meet the infamous Centauri pack. Everyone knew about that pack in particular because it was longest packs to ever exist. They had a reputable name and the five siblings that ran the pack and business made them formidable. The bond between the Centauri siblings was on everyone's lips all the time. They were known to be loyal and ferocious when protecting each other. Kade respected that about them too. However, he didn't like how meddlesome that alpha was being in his business.

Kade went to his bedroom to change and freshen up because he needed it. A cold shower did the job and he needed a long one. He got out in his robe drying his hair with towel as he went into his closet. A suit wouldn't match today's occasion. So, he opted for the black sweater and matching trousers. He didn't bother styling his hair and left it tousled away from his eyes. He grabbed his phone off counter and slid it in his pocket before leaving his bedroom.

He went straight to the guest bedroom and opened the door finding Alexander changing his shirt from a black one to a navy-blue t-shirt. "Shouldn't you knock before coming into someone's room?"

"In case you forgot, this is my house," Kade remarked. "Where's your brother?"

"He's downstairs already," Alexander answered as he slid the shirt down his broad back and covered his chiseled abdomen before he turned around to face him.

Kade hadn't realized when he stepped into the room that they were alone together. The door behind had already closed as regret filled him. He needed to leave because he shouldn't be allowed to stay here alone with this man.

"Did you need something?" Alexander asked as he put his phone in the back pocket of his pants.

Fuck, quickly think of something to say, Kade thought. "You handled the matter with Mikhail well," he blurted out.

Alexander raked his dark hair before the stubborn fell right back in front of his eyes. "Thanks," he said. "Honestly, I thought my uncle would put up a fight."

Kade stepped closer but it wasn't close enough to touch him. "Me too," he spoke without thinking because his eyes fell to Alexander's enticing lips.

He smiled boyishly, it fluttered through Kade's stomach and caused his knees to weaken. "Maybe, I'm not as unlucky as I thought," he jested.

"You're not unlucky," Kade answered.

Alexander raised a brow. "You okay?"

Kade cleared his throat and looked away at the bookshelf on the side. "Hurry up, we need to leave," he said.

Alexander closed the space between them after he grabbed his leather jacket. "I'm ready, let's go," his spiced cologne and the sweetness from his smile trembled through Kade's body.

Kade fisted his hands and stalked out of the room with Alexander right behind him. They made it downstairs where everyone already stood waiting for them to arrive. They went outside and Alexander drove one car with Kade and Mia while Vadik drove with Dario, but Nikolai followed them in his own car since he took any chance he could to drive his precious red Ferrari.

"Alec, what is the Centauri pack like?" Mia asked from the back.

Alexander didn't take his eyes off the road but his smile appeared when his sister asked him about the pack. Kade rolled his eyes and forced himself to stare at the red Ferrari speeding through the street beside them.

"They are different," Alexander shared. "Nothing like the world believes them to be."

"Is it true that they are five siblings in total?" Mia asked.

"It's true," he answered.

"How do you know them?" she asked him then.

Kade immediately noticed the way Alexander stiffened, his hand on the steering wheel tightened into a tight fist enough to make his knuckles white. "Mia, that's enough," he warned.

Mia went quiet at her brother's tone.

"It's fine," Alexander said concealing the haunted memory that appeared through his eyes. "The Centauri's helped me kill my father."

Kade knew about the feud that the Centauri pack had with the Waldorf pack a long time ago. They even signed a treaty to solve the issues between them. But even that didn't work. It really did seem like the whole world hated the Waldorf pack and anyone associated to them.

After a long drive, they arrived outside massive gates that were closed with guards protecting them. Alexander rolled his window down and the guards immediately recognized him and let him through without questions asked. All three cars drove into the territory and already the air here was different. This territory was rich and vast, it was thick with a forest protecting it, which was perfect for wolves to run freely without the fear of being caught by anyone.

Driving down a long path, they eventually reached a huge compound with acres of land where cabins were scattered all around the field. There was a huge manor on the side, which must be where the Centauri's lived. Apart from that, the second massive building was a castle-like building.

"What's that?" Mia asked what Kade was thinking too.

"It's Centauri Institute," Alexander answered.

"Institute?" Mia astounded.

But that building wasn't the thing that surprised Kade, it was the carnival arranged on the massive field. Although, he didn't know that the Centauri's had a school. This must be new or perhaps it was hidden away from society for protection. But only a foolish person would walk into this guarded fortress and try to plan an attack.

Alexander parked on the side and so did the others. Kade got out of the car and he helped his sister too before Gabriel Centauri appeared from inside the house.

"You made it just in time," Gabriel said. His expression was smug as his golden eyes went from Kade to Alexander. "This must be your sister?"

"Hi, I'm Mia," she said.

Gabriel mirrored a smile, then Vadik, Dario and Nikolai all appeared by their side too. "Welcome to the pack," he said. "I hope you brought an appetite."

Kade didn't know what he got himself into at this point but he underestimated this alpha. He looked like he always got his way and made sure everyone around him did his bidding at all times. Kade regretted ever agreeing to come here because this territory was Gabriel's domain and it showed his authority to anyone that had eyes.

"Alec!" A bunch of men appeared from inside the manor and went straight for Alexander and Vadik.

Kade wasn't too sure who they were but he recognized the Drakov twins who were the first to walk out of the house. River Drakov as usual was stern in his deposition while the other was flaring with energy, who must be the other twin, Ryder Drakov.

"Hey, Ryder," Alexander responded. "Where's Vincent?"

"Inside," Ryder said.

"You're back from your honeymoon already?" Vadik asked.

"I was dragged back," Ryder answered before his eyes landed on the rest of them. "Who are these people?"

"These are the guests I was talking about before when you refused to pay attention," Gabriel answered. "Kade Guerriero and his family."

Ryder Drakov's icy blue eyes widened when he focused on Kade and realized who he stood in front of right now. "Damn, you work fast," he told Gabriel making the man grin.

"But why are all of you together?" The beta of the pack, Hunter Centauri spoke next. He was towering in his bulky form and the glare from his golden eyes was scary enough to kill someone on the spot.

"I'll tell you later," Gabriel said. "Are you guys thirsty?" He showed them to the seats on the field.

Kade followed him but his focus remained on Alexander who was between the Centauri pack. The air around him shifted and he was relaxed, even happy now.

"Well, well, well," a voice Kade recognized too well spoke behind him. "Look what the cat dragged in."

Kade found himself standing in front of King Vitiello. The man was walking, talking sex appeal. He held himself with an air of confidence that mirrored into his stylish clothes and tattoos. His black hair tousled away from his cunning sapphire eyes and his mouth held in a permanent smirk, that unnerved everyone. He was a dangerous man with a specific set of skills that made him scary in the Underworld and mafia circles. Everyone knew about King and what would happen if you were his enemy.

"You," he scorned with a look of annoyance.

King winked at him. "Miss me?" he asked.

"Fuck you," Kade remarked.

"I'll take that as a yes," King retorted.

"Do you have to bother every guest we have?" Gabriel asked.

"Not everyone, just a few," King answered.

Kade rolled his eyes. They had old history together. When both of them were working in the mafia as new recruits, they crossed each other's paths all the fucking time, it was irritating as hell. Eventually, they both rose to their own thrones and ruled different parts of Italy. Kade was the first to offer partnership but King's answer to it was send all of Kade's men back in body bags. Since then, both of them avoided each other like the plague, otherwise they were sure to kill each other. However, fate played another joke. They were all having lunch at the Centauri pack now.

"I remember you two," King said to the others. "Nikolai and Dario, right?" The two men gave a single nod. "I can't believe you're still loyal to this asshole."

"You really want to die, don't you?" Kade glared right into the man's sapphire eyes.

"No, I just love fucking with you," King retorted.

"How do you manage to function with such a tiny brain?" Kade bit back.

"You two really are alike," Gabriel added in.

"Why would you say that?" Kade and King spoke together while glaring at Gabriel.

"How about we all calm down and enjoy some lemonade?" Another man stepped between them all with a tray of lemonade. He was tall, lean on the muscles and had sleek blond hair that was boyishly ruffled. His charming green eyes were happily smiling just like his lips, as he put the tray down and introduced himself. They all took a seat at the benches.

"I'm Klaus," he said.

"I'm Mia, thank you for the lemonade," she said as she grabbed a glass. "This is Nikolai, Dario and my brother, Kade."

A few women appeared at the table and crowded Mia right away. "You're so pretty," the tall blonde one said. "Screw the men, come sit with us. I'm Viola, by the way."

"Hi, Viola," Mia beamed and left with the girls to another table.

Kade watched as a small, curvy red-head helped Mia take a seat and introduced a toddler to her. There was another pregnant woman who sat down with them with her feet up as she took a lemonade from Bone. Kade knew who that man was because he was a loyal subordinate to King for a very long time. He was tall, lean and blond. There was another woman next to River Drakov, she was laughing in a yellow dress showing her pregnant belly and her dark hair left open in tumbling waves. Kade never thought he'd see River smile, but he was right now. Ryder stood with another man who was in stylish clothes that were all beige coloured, his golden-blond hair neatly raked back and he looked as if he stepped off a magazine with the sunglasses he adorned.

The woman they met at that restaurant appeared too. Azura was in a tank-top and shorts as she jogged off the field towards the girls. There was another man with her, a red-head who was just as optimist with his attitude as the rest of them.

"Why'd you invite us?" Kade asked.

Gabriel and King who were amidst a bickering conversation looked at him and then at each other. "I am being hospitable," Gabriel answered. "Is that such a bad thing?"

King started to laugh. "I suggest you run," he told Kade and the others.

"How has your life turned out after my interference?" Gabriel remarked. "Aren't you happily married to my baby brother with an adorable son now?"

"If someone warned me that my mate was coming with a huge annoying family, I would've taken him and ran off to the other side of the planet," King remarked.

"We would find you," River remarked as he took a seat with them.

King sighed. "You're all a pain in my ass," he mumbled under his breath.

"You know what I'm planning, don't you," Kade said to Gabriel.

"I do," Gabriel admitted.

"Is this your attempt to stop me?" Kade asked.

Gabriel smirked over his glass. "I invited you to have some fun, Kade," he said, the stern demeanour that made many quiver in fear appeared in his dangerous gold eyes. "If I wanted to change your mind. I wouldn't do it over lemonade and my family around."

"What are we all sitting around for?" Ryder and his mate appeared with Alec and Vadik. "Let's play."

"Cool jacket," the blond one said to Niko. "I'm Vincent."

"Thanks, I'm Nikolai," he smiled as he stood up and joined them.

"Alec agreed to play the dunk-tank," Ryder announced.

"No, I didn't," Alec said.

"Yes, you did," Vincent remarked. "You said you'd do anything for the bucket of cotton-candy I saved for you."

"I did not say that," Alec crossed his arms.

"He did, I heard," Vadik added.

Alec turned to his brother ready to punch him but Ryder grabbed his arms. "Woah, there, buddy," he said. "Come on, play with us. You'll have fun." Vincent brought forth a bucket of cotton-candy and Alexander froze before it.

"Are you being serious?" Kade stood to his feet and came up to them. "This is your weakness."

Alexander stiffened as his eyes followed the bucket. "Er- no, it's not," it was such a terrible attempt at a lie that Kade found himself smiling at him.

"Play the dunk-tank," Ryder said, "and it's all yours."

Alexander raked his dark hair. "Damn it, where's the stupid tank?"

They all went even Kade because he needed to see this for himself. How the hell did a cotton-candy bucket compel Alexander Waldorf to play games.

They walked up to a tank full of water and a target beside it, it was meant to be hit and whoever sat on the plank fell into the water. Kade knew that much, but who was going to sit on the plank and who was hitting the target. Dario stood with Kade as Nikolai got along with Vincent and Ryder, they were definitely exchanging contact information after this lunch.

"Alec, go sit on the plank," Vincent remarked.

"Shouldn't he hit the target?" Kade suggested.

"Nope," Ryder said. "He needs to make sure he doesn't fall in after someone hits the target three times."

"What the hell?" Alec yelled. "You didn't say that before."

"We didn't," Ryder looked at Vincent. "My bad."

"Our dunk-tank means our rules," Vincent added.

"That's fair," Nikolai said.

"It is, right," Ryder and Niko shared a cheery high-five.

"Just do it, Alec," Vadik added. "Here, I'll hold your shirt."

Alec glared at his little brother as he ripped off his leather jacket and stripped off his shirt before he shoved it at him. He took off his shoes and went around the tank, someone helped him on and he was sitting on the plank with regret all over his face. Kade really couldn't believe that he was doing it for cotton-candy.

Vincent tossed a bean-bag in the air. "Okay, who wants to try?" He held his hand out.

"Me," Vadik said a bit too quickly.

"You suck, Vadik!" Alec shouted.

"I was about to say that to you," Vadik said as he threw the little sack with such force that the target should've broke, but it didn't even budge.

"Give me one," Gabriel said as he stood with them.

"Gabriel, how could you?" Alec astounded.

Gabriel shrugged a shoulder before he tossed the sack at the target, but it still didn't work out.

"Who wants to try next?" Vincent asked as he tossed the bean-bag in his hand. "Kade?" They all looked in his direction now.

Kade's arms dropped and he faced Alec who was sitting in the tank. He grabbed the little sack and faced the target wondering what he should do now.

"Come on, Kade, dunk him," Vadik urged.

"Shut up, Vadik," Alec yelled at him making them all laugh.

Kade threw the bean-bag at the round target holding his strength back, which was the only way that Alec wouldn't drop in the tank. They all protested that Kade didn't try hard enough but he denied all allegations. He didn't know why he held back but when Alec smiled happily in relief, it was enough to ensure that Kade did the right thing.

"Not so fast, brother," Vadik said as he walked up to the target and pressed it dropping Alec straight into the icy-cold water. "That was for wreaking my car last year."

Alec lifted himself out of the water, his body soaking wet and his hair falling over his eyes. "You're dead!" He growled as he jumped out of the tank and went straight for his brother, tackling him to the ground. Vadik got wet in the process and took his brother's playful punch to the stomach.

"Since Alec technically won," Vincent said. "Here you go." He held the tub of cotton-candy and Alec got off his brother immediately.

He pulled the lid off and pulled a bit of the sugary cloud apart, it tore from the side and it was a bit of fluff between his fingers. He put it in his mouth and the pink cloud dissolved on his tongue and around his teeth.

"All that effort for cotton-candy?" Kade asked him.

"It's my favourite," Alec said.

"So, whose next?" Ryder prompted. "River?"

"I will kill you if you touch me," River answered.

"Never mind," Ryder stepped back with his hands up in truce.

"I think Kade should give it a go," Nikolai suggested.

Kade attention turned from Alec onto his annoying friend. "What the hell."

"I agree," Dario added.

"Kade's nominated then," Ryder said. "Someone, grab him."

Dario was the one to grab Kade first and Niko joined him, they both dragged him to the tank and put him on the plank over the water. Kade sat on the stiff board with his feet dangling just above the water, it was a small tank and the water below him was ice-cold. He stared at the men on the field facing him with determination in their eyes and a bit of mischief as well.

"Alec, go ahead," Vincent said.

"I'll pass," Alec said as he enjoyed his dessert next to Gabriel who took a bite too.

Kade glared at them for being so nonchalant. He should've dunked Alexander when he had the chance.

"I'll go," Niko said grabbing two bean-bags and he threw them with full force. The first attempt didn't work but when he threw the second one, the plank jolted surprising Kade.

"My turn," Dario jested.

"Dario," Kade forewarned.

Dario didn't pay any heed to the warning tone of his friend and boss. He threw the small bean-bag and the target was hit. The plank dropped and Kade fell straight into the water, he was submerged fully before he popped back out from the top gasping for air. Everyone was laughing even Alec. Kade got out of the water and punched Nikolai before anyone else.

"King's next," Gabriel offered.

"No, I'm not," King protested.

River and Ryder were quick to grab him.

This went on for a while until everyone got a chance at the dunk-tank. Even some of the women weren't spared. Viola, Azura and even Hunter's mate, Hailey was forced to play. After that, the pups of the pack told them that they wanted to play and they should leave, which they did after seeing the kids glare at them.

A few hours passed just like that and Kade hadn't realized how immersed they all got together.

This was strange, Kade thought to himself as he got a beer from King. He shouldn't be here or enjoy himself like this, it wasn't like him. He was a criminal who killed and gambled his way to the top of the world. Now, he stood amongst this pack who are comfortable around each other and protected one another. This wasn't a pack built on fear and shame. This was a place of safety and trust. In all these years, what did Kade build? His eyes landed on Mia who was sitting with the women talking and laughing, she'd never been so unguarded around new people yet she was enjoying herself like a young woman should. Nikolai was totally in his zone with people who were just like him. They all talked about fast cars and any new fashion topics that Kade never understood. Dario was in element with Hunter and River, all three of them had built an unspoken bond through their similar stern demeanour.

However, Kade's eyes locked onto Alexander who was sitting with Gabriel. Both of them were alphas of packs but never once did they need to prove it to one another. They trusted their own strengths but also made sure that they never burdened anyone around them.

Alec and Vadik were different than Kade believed. All the ideas he harboured about the Waldorf's changed when he met these two brothers. They weren't evil. They were protectors. They built a strong bond with anyone they befriended. On top of that Alec's weird love for cotton-candy softened that hard edge inside Kade's heart.

Kade was losing himself as he spent more time with Alec. The plan he had, he couldn't fulfill it anymore, it'd be wrong. But what about his family? Who was going to avenge their death? It seemed that Alec was never the prisoner... it was Kade. He was in this dark prison all by himself and he didn't know who'd free him.
