6 - The Seventh Floor

Jimmy's sleep did not provide him with much rest as he replayed the day in his mind, snippets at a time.

...hey, looking for a hot chick and a....

...I liked it better when you had your eyes closed!

....Jimmy fucking Carrick!

...Johnny Fortune....

...Fuck you, Carrick!

...I don't ever want to see you again!

...I will let you know if you succeed...

...time to call a cab...

...say good morning to me...

Jimmy felt a tug on the sheet, rolling him over and finally waking him from his slumber. "Good morning." Jimmy mumbled.

"Good morning, JJ." The older sister, Monica offered in return with an added chuckle. The woman looked up to the doorway.

"Good morning, JJ." Fan also greeted the confused man.

What the fuck? Both Fan and Monica? His eyes darted around the room at the unfamiliar furniture before finding Monica next to him and Fan at the doorway sipping on a morning coffee.

The room had been painted in a deep shade of red, appropriate for unleashing deep passionate desires. The bed felt unusually soft and smelled of lilacs or lavender, he couldn't focus enough to tell. What the hell is going on?

Jimmy ran his fingers through his hair. "I don't remember a thing." He frowned. "And I don't usually end up in beds of women I don't know."

"You seemed very interested in coming upstairs last night." Monica kissed Jimmy's arm trying to jog his memory. "Did Fan tell you I liked to be spanked?"

These fucking women are crazy! That's not like me! Well ~ not usually.

"You are quite the entertainer, JJ." Fan raised an eyebrow of her own. "What do you do for a living?" Purely rhetorical because she followed the question with another. "I know! An unemployed cruise ship musician?"

"That's funny, Fan." Jimmy stared at the bartender.

"Then what?"

"Sort of in between careers at the moment." Jimmy deliberately sidestepped his new career of hunting human traffickers. Then turned a challenging question back to the sisters. "Tell me ~ do the two of you tag team men often?"

Fan looked to her sister laying next to Jimmy expecting her to field this question.

Monica pulled on Jimmy's arm again and kissed the scar on his shoulder. "What can I say? We like the same type of men."

"So, you're into older guys..." Jimmy looked at Fan, the thirtysomething bartender, more interested in landing a big fish than being motivated to use her business degree. "...who are out of work?"

"Older men are usually more successful than younger ones." Fan took a sip of coffee as she leaned against the door frame. "With that said, you don't actually fit the mold."

"Ouch!" Jimmy reacted. "But you are absolutely right. I am not as successful as that guy last night."

Monica looked at Fan. "What guy?"

"I don't know what he is talking about, Monica!" Fan avoided eye contact with Jimmy.

"Does Fortune Developments ring any bells?" Jimmy kept the pressure on the younger sister. "She showed me the card." That one was for that unsuccessful comment. Deal with that!

"Fan! What did I tell you about taking cards?" Monica held her hand out to her younger sister. "Come on, give it up."

"Fine!" Now she stared at Jimmy as she pulled the card from her pocket and held it out for her sister.

Jimmy snatched it from Fan's hand. "Fortune Developments." He turned the card over. "Bobby F ~ call me." He looked up at Fan. "The eldest Fortune brother? That was Bobby?"

"You know him?" Fan stepped back. "I couldn't imagine the two of you in the same social circle."

Jimmy laughed. "You have that right! I know the name. Not the person." But Jimmy did know Bobby, the eldest Fortune brother, more interested in the big money by controlling commercial properties and new developments.

"He has this alpha male persona." Fan looked as though she was all hot and bothered as she stared off into the distance.

Jimmy shook his head. "I think you need a cold shower." He reached for his jeans and his tee shirt next to the bed. "On that note."

"Don't be shy." Fan took interest in what Jimmy was packing. "I hate when Monica lies to me." Her eyes fixed upon him needing proof.

Jimmy shrugged. He had no reservations and stood to dress with both women studying his ruggedly built body. No six pack abs but well defined arms and shoulders. The interestng parts below were enough to silence the doubting younger sister.

Fan crossed Monica's bedroom when she noticed a mark on Jimmy's shoulder. "A scar?" She stopped him from covering his body with his shirt and ran her finger over the ridge of his scar. "Not that old."

"A little room, Fan." Jimmy continued to dress himself. He looked to Monica and asked. "Is she always this interested in the guys you bring up here?"

"Well..." Monica was about to divulge a family secret.

"On that note, I have to get out of here, ladies." Jimmy grabbed his jacket and felt for his harmonica. There it is. "I have a busy day."

Monica sat up in her bed. "Are you going to leave your number?"

Awkward! Not a chance. "You really want my number?" Jimmy simply smiled. "It was ~ fun ~ I guess. But..."

"But what?" Monica looked at Jimmy with real disappointment. "Is it Fan? Me?"

"It's me. Monica." Jimmy chagrined. "I am getting too old to be having nights like last night."

"Can never be too old to enjoy life." Monica countered. "Well, if you ever want to feel young again just stop by the restaurant." She allowed the covers to slide off her body exposing a well maintained late-thirty-something year old woman.

"Come on, I'll show you out." The younger sister took Jimmy by his hand and led him down the stairs to the back door of the restaurant. "You know the way from here."

"Tell me, Fan." Jimmy looked the beautifully curved bartender in the eyes. "Why did you spiked my coffee last night?"

"Well duh!" Fan avoided answering with the truth.

"Yeah, that wasn't the reason." Jimmy didn't buy it. "Come on, Fan."

"I don't know what you mean."

"I have a body of a fifty year old dad." Jimmy eyed the woman. "I wouldn't have been the catch of the day."

"Give yourself a little credit." Fan bit down on a finger. "Dad bods are all the rage."

"Yeah, right!" The older man stepped backwards down the stairs until Fan closed the fireproof metal door. Jimmy then turned and headed for a local convenience store to catch a taxi to the nearest skytrain station.

Jimmy had time to contemplate how his actions would make Windy feel. He had never kept his love life a secret from his oldest friend but this seemed seedy and made him feel guilty even though he knew Fan drugged him.

The Fortune brothers came back into focus for Jimmy. I forgot all about Bobby Fortune. Before the eldest brother ran the development side of the Fortune family business he organized the muscle for Joey. Recruiting men and boys from gyms and mixed martial arts clubs. Choosing those without bright futures were far easier to manipulate.

Jimmy's distant stare had been broken by his vibrating cellphone. Though he had no intentions of answering any phone calls at this time. Over the next few minutes he felt it vibrate several more times.

This has to be Windy. No one is more persistent than that woman. Fuck me, she is the last person I want to face right now.

I'm gonna regret this. He pulled his cellphone from his jacket to see missed calls from Dana and several text messages from Windy. I know I am MIA. Oh fuck, you idiot, Jordan at the hospital.

Jimmy checked his text messages.

Windy - you horse's ass, where are you?

Windy - phone me asap

Windy - you don't deserve a daughter...you are a dumbass!

Windy - why is my phone silent?

Fuck me. Jimmy tapped the quick dial to speak with Windy who seemed to answer before the first ring finished.

"What the hell took you so long? And where the hell have you been? Your daughter has been transferred to VGH! (Vancouver General Hospital)." Windy waited for her old friend to explain.

The guilt seeped in from all around but he could not show it. "I just needed to get out of the city for the night."

"Without your car?" Windy probed his activities.

"Without my car. Kinda creepy but thanks for checking." Jimmy tried to shift the conversation away from him but he is dealing with someone who knows and understands him all too well. "Did you check the hospitals and morgues? Or did you just assumed I was on a bender?"

"You know I checked the hospitals and double checked the morgues. The police alerts and arrests that were made." Windy's voice, thick with contempt and attitude.

Jimmy frowned. "You checked the morgue ~ twice? What the hell, Win?"

"That leads me to another question I hope you do not have the answer to ~ any idea where Johnny and Joey are?"

Fuck me Win, you are good!

Jimmy knew they were not found yet by the question which meant Joey probably drowned. "Johnny and Joey who?" He threw the names back at Windy as if in a heated tennis match.

"Okay have it that way." Windy scoffed loud enough that Jimmy would hear. "Now get your ass to VGH and see your daughter so help...."

Jimmy ended the call knowing full well the implications of doing so. Windy has been there for him for almost twenty-five years. Maybe this was his way of trying to get her to move on to a different life where she didn't feel the need to be there for him. Maybe he loved her so much that he knew he opened a can of worms big enough to engulf the city.

He checked the voicemail from Dana.

Jimmy, I know you hate hearing my voice so I will keep this short. Get to VGH!

Fuck me! The last thing you need to do is fuck this up, you idiot. Win is right, you are a dumbass!

The clock on the wall in the emergency department of VGH read just after twelve noon. The whole morning evaporated with his lengthy commute back into the city. He had no idea where to go and reluctantly phoned his ex-girlfriend.

Dana picked up. "Oh, you better be here, mister!" Fury has no match for a mother protecting her only child.

"I am." Jimmy spoke confidently before asking. "Where is Jordan? It's a big hospital, Dani."

"Seventh floor." Dana looked at Jordan before offering. "I will meet you at the main elevators. Oh and Jimmy, she doesn't look so hot."

"Gotcha." Jimmy ended the call. Step up to the plate, Jimmy, old boy. Jordan needs a pinch hitter. A baseball reference that he rolled his eyes to. What the hell are you thinking? A pinch hitter? You idiot, it's a sacrifice.

The elevator arrived at the seventh floor and Dana stood directly in front of the doors waiting for him. In a hushed angered voice she carved into Jimmy as if he were a Thanksgiving turkey. "It's about time! Where the hell did you go when you dropped us off?" She continued her assault. "The police arrived! Were you arrested? God, what am I thinking? Of course you were arrested. Now what will Jordan do for a kidney? This is not about how tough Jimmy Carrick is. It's about our daughter ~ your daughter, Buddy!"

In the same hushed voice Jimmy tried to defuse the situation. "Are you finished?"

Dana pressed her lips together looking away from Jimmy. As her eyes found his she lowered the temperature of the meeting. "Follow me." Even their hushed voices drew attention.

"Everything okay, Mrs. Kerron?" Dr. Liu met Dana and Jimmy at the elevator. "Jordan is far too weak for visitors."

"Dr. Liu, this is Jordan's biological father, James Carrick." Dana tilted her head towards Jimmy. "Jimmy, this is the head of the transplant department here."

"Mr. Carrick, you are none too soon." Dr. Liu motioned Jimmy to walk with him. "We need to begin the process today!"

"Today?!" Jimmy had not seen this coming. "Like..."

"Like right now, Mr. Carrick. Your daughter is very weak." Dr. Liu explained. "She will receive blood transfusions because dialysis is no longer helping. Then, I hope, Jordan will be strong enough to survive the transplant operation."

As the two stopped at an office door, Dr. Liu used his security card to unlock it. They stepped through the barrier and he turned to Jimmy. "Please have a seat and we'll discuss the process."

"The process?" Jimmy did not know the situation was this dire. This guy doesn't waste any time.

"Yes, the process must begin today, if we are to save your daughter."
