41 Twisted Game

Jimmy watched Windy pull up to Mama's driveway. He sat heavily onto the passenger seat. "Win." The man could not look into his girlfriend's eyes. "I am a screw up."

"Babe?"

"Win." Jimmy looked out the side window. "This ends tonight."

Windy rolled her eyes at that statement. "Yeah right."

"They want me, Win." Jimmy looked at the love of his life. "To make every one safe I need to give myself up."

"Joey will never let it rest with just you." Windy grabbed at her frizzy hair. "He is a narcissist. The entire family are narcissists."

"Your point, Win?"

"This will never be over." Windy slipped her long fingers around the back of his head with her thumb stroking his ear. "As long as there is someone that loves you that's alive, they will never be satisfied with just you."

He gently pulled her hand away. "I still need to be at the mansion by nine tonight, Win."

He opened the envelope, unfolded the message from within and handed it to Windy.

Carrick, if you are reading this it means I found the one thing you care enough about to do the right thing. Be at the mansion alone tonight at nine. Every minute you are late one of them dies. Joey F.

"He's a bastard!" Windy pushed the paper into Jimmy's chest.

"Win, I need to be at the mansion in six hours."

"I know. I read it, Babe." She ran her fingers through his hair again.

His eyes locked onto Windy's. "At the very least, I can save Mama, Dani, Brad and ~ and Jordan."

"You believe the Fortunes will let everyone go when you show up at the front door of the mansion?" Windy turned away from Jimmy. "There is no way they let everyone walk away, Babe." Windy pulled her hand away from Jimmy and drove away from Mama's.

"Where are you heading, Win?"

"Gib needs to be fed and I need to think." Windy paused at the red light and Jimmy reached over and held her hand. "Jimmy?"

"Win." Jimmy wouldn't look away. "Win." She turned her head slowly. "Remember Tofino?"

"Jimmy?" Windy looked away.

"We survived that day." Jimmy gave Windy his wry smile. "I think we should go back."

"Babe?" Windy sighed heavily.

"Win, I prefer a mother whale trying to capsize us compared to the Fortune family." Jimmy took a deep breath. "In fact, I think we should get married on the water."

"You hate the water, Babe." The traffic light turned green. Jimmy pointed to the light and Windy pulled away. "I thought that would be the last place on earth you would ever want to be."

Jimmy reached deep into his jeans and pulled his hand from the front pocket. "Remember my friend, Al?"

"Is he back from Alaska?" Windy glanced at Jimmy then back to the road.

"Well, Al dove that same cove you tossed the ring into." Jimmy slowly opened his hand exposing the engagement ring.

Windy eradically pulled her classic car into a parking lot with tears beginning to cloud her vision. "Awwwww, Babe."

"He found it while I was half way around the world."

"You never said a thing!" Windy looked at Jimmy in disbelief.

Jimmy gave a laugh and a shrug as the mid afternoon sun caught the small diamond atop the silver mount. "I know it isn't a huge rock but, to me, it means we're meant to be together."

"You are something else, Babe." A small laugh escaped as she sniffed back her tears.

"Funny how things come full circle." Jimmy reached for Windy's hand and slid it onto her ring finger.

They locked eyes and Windy pressed her lips to Jimmy's. When the passion subsided she embraced Jimmy and whispered. "Babe." She caressed his face just the way he liked. "You do the craziest things."

The Motel

Windy opened her laptop as Jimmy cracked open a cat food can to feed Gib. The familiar sound of food was enough to motivate him from Windy's lap even though the cat was not a huge fan of Jimmy.

Gib brushed his leg. "So, it's okay for me to feed you now, huh?" Jimmy chortled as he fashioned a dish from a disposable empty coffee cup.

The huge cat easily jumped onto the counter and waited for his food to land. "Give him some room, Babe." Windy warned Jimmy.

Gib hissed and waited for Jimmy to back away before devouring every morsel of the fish pate. The huge white cat stalked the man who just fed him as if that wasn't enough.

Jimmy backed away from the cat eyeing him as his next meal. "I'm not on the menu, Gib."

Jimmy crashed on Windy's bed while she scoured the net with her vetting programs searching for dirt on the Fortunes. Many pieces of common knowledge popped up but would not incriminate the family. Just making them look bad would not be enough.

Jimmy slept but he did not find rest in his sleep. His restlessness showed as he tossed and turned drawing Windy's attention. She looked at her man but could not leave her laptop.

"Jordan! Run!" Jimmy's arms flailed. "Fortune, you bastard, don't you dare!"

"Carrick, this is your last..." Joey's voice tailed off.

Windy heard Jimmy and stepped away from the table but the algorithms she had running alerted her to new information. She returned to her laptop to read through the new information.

Six o'clock rolled around and Gib slapped at Jimmy's face saving him from his nightmare. He pushed the cat away from his face. "Gibbbbb!"

Windy called her jealous cat before the playful pawing developed into something more serious. "Gib!" The huge white cat slinked down from the bed, jumped onto the table and pressed his head against Windy's forehead. "Relax Gib, he's here to stay. I hope."

The Fortune Family Mansion

Robert Senior stood over Jordan. "Let's see your father get over the bridge in time to save your family."

Jordan looked up at the Van City mob leader. "You're not smart enough to stop that man."

"Yeah? We'll see." Robert Senior smugly walked away from the teenaged girl. "He'll have to swim the Burrard Inlet to get here in time."

"He'd do it!" Jordan believed in Jimmy.

Senior dismissed Jordan's claim, picked up his desk phone, and punched at the keypad. "Joey? I need your men to disable all the ferries crossing the inlet. Nothing moves until the morning." He ended the call abruptly then punched another phone number.

"Cranky? Yeah I need the Iron Workers and the Lions Gate bridges blocked until after nine tonight. I don't care what you need to do but Carrick doesn't get here! We'll bring an end to this pain in the ass tonight!"

Just then Robert Junior open his father's office door. "Father. His ex-girlfriend."

Jordan jumped up. "Mom!"

Robert Senior restrained Jordan and sat her back down in the visitor's chair. "Stay!" He turned to Dana before speaking. "Mrs. Kerron, your ex-boyfriend has a few hours to give himself up to save you and your family." Senior flashed a devious smile. "Of course he will not have an easy path."

Dana shook her head. "You really don't know that man."

He laughed with a narcissistic confidence. "On the contrary. I know everything about him." Senior sat in his expensive and comfortable office chair.

"Exactly, you know everything about him." Dana scoffed as she shook her head before returning her own confidence. "But you don't know him. I thought I knew him but he is much more determined than anyone I have ever known." This made Jordan smile.

"I know him well enough to know he doesn't care about you." Senior smiled an evil smile. "But he would do anything for her." He squeezed Jordan's shoulder.

Jordan did not give Senior the satisfaction of screaming.

"He once tried to blemish my good name. Ever since I made it my business to know everything about him."

"So this is about revenge?" Dana surmised.

"Revenge?" Senior nodded. "I will have my retribution one way or another."

"If he doesn't come ~ you will kill us?"

"One by one. Every minute he is late." Senior leaned forward. "By five minutes after nine tonight your whole family could be gone."

"Bastard! Dana exploded. "Fucking men!"

Senior lit a Cuban cigar, stood before making his way to Dana. "Your mother will be first."

Jordan defiantly sprang from her seat surprising Robert Senior. "If Mama dies my father will destroy you."

"He won't even make it." Robert Senior forced Jordan back into her seat. "And you? You will just be a sad, pathetic memory."

"He'll make it!" Jordan spat.

"Not a chance!" Robert Senior chortled. "Junior, take Mrs. Kerron back to the board room. Then come back for this brat."

Windy's Motel Room

Kilterage arrived at the motel rapping on Windy's door rattling Jimmy from his sleep sending Gib scurrying under the bed. "Windy?!"

Windy sensed an urgency in the officer's voice, unlocked the door and witnessed that urgency in Kilterage's face. "Hey! What is it?"

"Captain Cranzell just issued an arrest warrant for Jimmy." Windy pulled Kilterage into the room.

"What the hell does he have on Jimmy?" Windy frowned.

"Infringement of the court order."

Windy pointed to Jimmy on her bed. "The only infringement is on Gib's territory."

"Take this seriously, Windy." Kilterage's face could not hide her concern. "I think the Captain sent my boss, Santos out to arrest you, Mr. Carrick!"

"The Captain?" Windy frowned.

"Santos wouldn't arrest me." Jimmy felt confident about that. "Besides, I have to be at the Fortune mansion by nine!"

Kilterage looked confused. "Why do you need to be at the mansion by nine? You aren't supposed to be anywhere near the Fortunes!"

"Come on, Win!" Jimmy put his shoes on.

"You can't drive there." Kilterage shrugged. "The bridges are shut down until nine tonight."

"I'll take a ferry." Jimmy looked to Windy who returned to the bed to find Gib. "Come on, Win!"

"I had a call on the radio..."

"What call?" Windy looked up from under her bed.

Kilterage stepped further into the room, informing the couple of yet another barrier for Jimmy. "All the ferries are down for the night!"

"I need to get to the mansion by nine or they will kill Dana, Jordan ~ everyone, one by one!" Jimmy grabbed his jacket. "Win!"

Windy looked up again. "Jimmy, I need to know Gib is okay!"

"How the hell am I gonna get across the inlet in less than three hours?" Jimmy began to panic. "I need a freaking miracle!"

Kilterage looked at Windy's laptop. "What are you working on, Miss South?"

Gib ran from under the bed and bolted out the hotel door. "Gibbbbbb!" Windy hurried out in search of her cat.

"Come on, Mr. Carrick, I have an idea." Kilterage pulled Jimmy out the door. "I have a friend who can help."

"I hope your friend has the golden answer, Kilterage." Jimmy looked for Windy. "Where are you, Win?"

"If you are going to get to the mansion before nine we need to go now, Mr. Carrick!"

Jimmy looked at Kilterage then at Windy running after Gib. "I'd feel better with Win helping me!"

"You need to get across the inlet and to the mansion in..." Kilterage checked her watch. "Two and a half hours, Mr. Carrick."

Windy returned with Gib in her arms. "Babe, go with Officer Kilterage."

"Win?" Jimmy leaned his forehead against her forehead. "You know I need you."

Windy forced a smile. "Babe, I love you! But you have to go now. I will get there as soon as I can."

"But, Win!" Jimmy pulled her close squeezing Gib.

"Babe ~ go."

Vancouver General Hospital
6:30 PM

Several men from Adia's home on the Queen Charlotte Islands wasted little time making their way to Adia's room. The hospital security guard simply stepped aside without incident as if they expected the heavy native presence. Four men cradled the young woman, moving swiftly and silently to the exit.

With a nod from the leader to the security guard the extraction of the future Haida leader came to a successful end. Three large SUVs made their way to the Vanier boat launch where Adia's voyage to her village would begin.

Santos

Santos interupted Kilterage's call to the person she needed to help Jimmy cross the inlet. "Kilterage, where are you?"

Kilterage pressed speakerphone. "Sir, I just checked Miss South's hotel room. Mr. Carrick wasn't there."

"Damn, we need to find that man." Santos showed her his true colors. "He needs to be stopped. He is about to take out the entire Fortune family!"

"Mr. Carrick, Sir?" Kilterage looked at Jimmy who frowned before responding to Santos. "He doesn't seem like the type, Sir."

A strange feeling came over Jimmy. He couldn't put his finger on it but it made him uncomfortable.

"He has in the past, Kilterage." Santos continued his gaslighting of Jimmy. "I just got a new report from New Orleans. Kilterage, he is an assassin. He killed Precinct Nine's Captain."

"That wasn't in the official report." Kilterage stopped her cruiser. "What are your orders, Sir?"

"Shoot to kill."
