4 - Return of Joey Fortune
"Let's get her to my car." Jimmy brushed past Dana and gathered Jordan in his arms. "We'll be there in two minutes!"
Mama grabbed her purse and keys. "I need to be there!"
Dana led Jimmy back down to the garage, past Mama's car and out to his car.
"Get in Dani. Hold Jordan." Jimmy looked at his daughter. "Oh no." He didn't like her color. "Hold on, Kiddo!"
Dana held her daughter close as Jimmy fired up his classic sports car and wound his way through the back lanes of the townhouse units. Once at the four lane Number One Road he let loose the horsepower of his classic Dodge.
"Jimmy! We want to get there alive!" Dana screeched as he slashed his way through the traffic not stopping for red lights. "Jimmy!"
"What? I slowed down!" Jimmy shrugged. "It was yellow."
"It was red!" Dana looked out her window at what seemed to be a blur. "Slow down!"
Jimmy had no time to be managing fears and reached over to shade Dana from seeing the road. "Close your eyes!"
Dana pulled Jimmy's right hand away from her sight line. "Oh God!" She closed her eyes and winced anticipating disaster.
Jimmy geared down from fourth to first so the could make the corner at Westminster Highway. He jerked the steering wheel to the right and popped the clutch leaving rubber on the faded asphalt.
Dana protected Jordan's head as they rattled around inside the car. "You're freaking crazy!" She spoke all the while keeping her eyes tightly closed.
Jimmy did slow down. The traffic nearing the city center thickened and he was forced into a quick decision. Two blocks from the hospital he turned into the mall parking lot.
Dana opened her eyes. "You're at the mall dumbass, we need the hospital!"
"Dumbass? I liked it better when you had your eyes closed." Jimmy drove for the underground parking.
Dana rolled her eyes. "Where the hell are you going?!"
"The drive through." Jimmy scoffed. "You've been gone fifteen years and never had to get around the city in a hurry." He covered her eyes again. "Now leave the driving to me!"
Jimmy quickly drove through the underground parking exiting just across the street from the emergency department of Richmond General Hospital. "It would be nice if you could trust me one in a while."
Dana bit her bottom lip. "Okay, you got us here. Now help us out of the car."
The new father parked his sportscar in front of the emergency entrance and quickly got out noticing a security guard make his approach.
"You know you can not park here?!" The security guard barked at Jimmy.
"I'm not parking. The car is still running." Jimmy looked at Jordan. "Hey Kiddo, how are you feeling?" He lifted her from Dana's lap and she slapped his face. The security guard laughed.
Dana pointed her index finger to her ex-boyfriend before he stood up. Gritting her teeth she let Jimmy have it. "Never ~ do ~ that ~ again!"
Jimmy shook his head. "You're welcome."
"Sir, you have to move your car now!" The guard aggressively demanded the man with his child in his arms.
Jimmy straighten up to look face to face with the guard. "Hey, you work at a hospital not the border."
"There is no stopping in this area."
"Then why don't you keep moving?" Jimmy matched the tone of the guard. "This is my daughter. You have a daughter?" He looked to Dana. "Grab a wheelchair."
Dana rushed inside returning with a wheelchair. "Got it, Jimmy. Put her in." She looked to the guard. "We're out of here. Thank you!"
Jimmy watched Dana disappear through the emergency doors then turned to the security guard. "You may have saved my daughter. Thanks."
"Come with me while I call a tow truck." The guard tilted his head towards his security shed.
"As if." Jimmy did not feel like going through that on this morning. "Write me a ticket but you are not towing my car." He pointed to his classic car.
"We will see about that." The guard called for reinforcements. "I asked you three times to move your vehicle."
"And I would have to say go to hell." Jimmy read the man's identification tag. "Security Guard, Fortune." He gave the guard a closer look. "You're Joey Fortune's brother. Fuck me! How did you get a job as a guard at this fucking hospital?!"
John Fortune, aka Little Johnny, laughed. "Connections." He lifted his head. "Jimmy fucking Carrick. Joey's gonna want to see you."
"Wait ~ he still has three years left on his sentence." Jimmy did not know of Joey's early release from prison.
"Where have you been, loser?" Johnny frowned. "Under a rock?"
"Let's just say, taking care of trash ~ like you." Jimmy looked Johnny in the eyes.
"Pretty ballsy from a guy who is about to get his ass handed to him." Johnny looked over his shoulder at a couple of familiar faces Jimmy recognized from years past.
"Roco and Sledge. Are you fucking kidding me?"
"You remembered!" Johnny chortled. "Ain't that nice?"
"Fuck you!" Jimmy scoffed.
Johnny shook his head, smiled, and filled Jimmy in about how he felt. "I have hated you since you sent my brother to the pen. Nothing but a fucking idiot reporter."
Jimmy tilted his head making his neck rippled into place. "You are as big of a jackass as your brother Joey."
The two goons from the past joined Johnny at the emergency entrance. They showed their disdain for Jimmy scowling at him.
"This guy cost me my house." Roco pounded a fist into his open hand.
"Well, as the saying goes ~ idiots who make poor choices." Jimmy shrugged as he slowly backed up from the three. "Well you get the point."
Jimmy waited for a lull in patients entering the emergency department before beginning the fight for his life and the life of his daughter. He looked to Johnny. "I guess we're doing this the hard way?"
"What hard..." Johnny turned to his buddies as Jimmy had hoped.
Jimmy thrusted his foot into Johnny's left knee causing the tall man to buckle at the former reporter's feet. He followed his devastating kick with a quick left cross to the jaw.
Jimmy didn't have time to admire his handy work as Roco grabbed his leather jacket. Jimmy slipped his right arm from the jacket. Sledge lunged at him. He ducked the huge man and snared the two goons with his faded leather jacket. He slipped his left arm free.
He tapped the back of Sledge's knees causing the huge man to fall onto Roco knocking the wind out of him. Jimmy reminded himself. No mercy.
He knelt on the back of the huge man, known as Sledge, but he just rolled over depositing Jimmy onto the asphalt. "Crap." Both men scrambled to their feet and faced off.
Blood trickled from just under Sledge's eyebrow as his head struck Roco's jaw on the way down. His left eye puffed up like a marshmallow as his vision impaired. Jimmy quickly shifted to his right and just out of sight of the bad eye as he slew footed the security guard.
Jimmy followed up with a hard left cross knocking Sledge out. Then he heard mumbling from behind him ~ Johnny?
He turned to see the younger Fortune brother holding his jaw while firing his taser. Jimmy raised his leather jacket and the metal clamps could not bite in.
He rushed Johnny, tackling him to the ground. "Awwww fook!"
Jimmy frowned. "What was that?"
"I faid fook. You boke my fooking ja!" Johnny held his chin up. "My jaw!"
Jimmy wrangled Johnny, securing him with custody zap strap cuffs from the security guard's own back pocket. He sat him up against his car then harnessed Joey Fortune's former bodyguards together using their own plastic cuffs.
Jimmy returned to Johnny leaning against his car. "Let's go meet your brother."
"Fook you!"
Jimmy took the cellphone from Johnny and found Joey's number.
Joey answered. "Johnny?"
"Hey Joey, I hear you want to see me. Meet me under the Cambie Street bridge in an hour. You know where."
Cambie Street Bridge
Joey Fortune's Cadillac XTS pulled up next to Jimmy waiting near the water's edge. The gangster smiled as he exited his SUV confident he would get his revenge on this day.
"Joey fucking Fortune. How the hell did you get out early?!" Jimmy walked up to the older Fortune brother to get a closer look at the man who once threatened his life.
"Jimmy fucking Carrick." Joey smiled as if he were in control of the situation not knowing the former reporter had his brother near by. "The man who brought me down ~ temporarily."
"Yeah, thanks for the update." Jimmy raised his chin.
"How long has it been?" Joey asked rhetorically.
"Not long enough, Joey." Jimmy's left hand twitched as if he had already thrown a punch.
Joey drew a nine millimeter handgun from his finely crafted tailored suit jacket.
Jimmy stepped back and raised his hands. "I thought you wanted to talk?"
"Talk? No." Joey shook his head. "I wanted to see you and watch your dying breath leave your fucking body." He waved the glock in front of Jimmy's face. "Any last words?"
"You want to see your brother again?" Jimmy raised his chin. "You may want to lower that gun." His voice under firm control. His past experiences have hardened him and led him down this dark path with no escape.
Joey rushed towards Jimmy pressing the gun into his chest. "What do you mean, see my brother again?"
Jimmy held up Johnny's cellphone. "Little Johnny has about three minutes before he will slip under the tide coming in." Jimmy gave a stone cold stare to the man who wanted him dead. He simply stepped aside to allow Joey a clear view of his younger brother slowly being engulfed by the water.
Joey punched Jimmy in the gut sending him to his knees gasping for air. The freed gangster rushed into the water to get his brother.
"Johnny!" Joey looked at the distress in his little brother's eyes as he ran into the water with his finely crafted suit. "Johnny!"
Joey reached his younger brother seeing the damage Jimmy inflicted. "You fucking bastard, Carrick! He turned but Jimmy found cover behind the SUV.
Joey tucked his glock into its holster, ripped his expensive suit jacket from his body, and dove into the cold water to release his brother. Jimmy did not make it too difficult, it was not his intention to kill Little John but to send the family a message ~ getting rid of him would not be an easy task.
Released from his anchor Johnny stumbled to the shore gasping for breath. Exhausted from stretching his neck to keep his mouth above water even walking seemed impossible. The younger brother collapsed after making it to shore with Joey's help. The older brother grabbed his suit jacket and pulled his glock.
"Your last word, Carrick?" Joey sneered raising his gun to take aim at the man who sent him to the pen. "My father made me do the time to take the heat off himself. But I got out to kill you myself."
"I'm honored, Joey. Really." Jimmy walked closer. His only chance to survive this encounter. "Your daddy paid off a judge and..."
"Just shut the fuck up, Carrick!" The confident gangster allowed Jimmy to walk closer. "My father wanted me to do the seven years. Fuck that!"
Johnny groaned.
"How's it going, Johnny?" Jimmy asked, though not interested in his answer.
Johnny raised his gaze to the man who got the best of him but chose to stay silent.
Jimmy turned his attention to the older brother. "You know, I hate being hunted. It gives me this feeling of dread. That death is just around the corner and I just can't fucking live that way." He shook his head as he looked into the gangster's eyes.
Jimmy pressed his chest into Joey's handgun. "I won't live that way. I won't give you the chance to hunt me again."
Joey stood there, his dress shirt matted against his skin, his perfectly styled hair dishevelled and the look of contempt in his eyes. "Then you're ready!" The gangster spat at Jimmy. "Fucker!"
A cellphone rang out distracting Joey for a life-saving moment. Jimmy's left hand moved quickly jarring the glock from his chest.
Joey squeezed the trigger just as the handgun cleared Jimmy's body. The two heard another groan from the younger Fortune brother.
Joey froze at the sound of agony coming from his younger brother. He fell to his knees at Johnny's side unable to speak.
