33 - From the Past
Kilterage found Jimmy's clothes. He retreated to the ICU and quickly dressed. Windy followed him into his corner of the ICU ward. "Have you lost your friggin mind?"
"What are you talking about, Win?"
"Oh, I don't know." Windy sarcastically tapped her head. "Try another concussion. Maybe get a CT scan and see if you lost any more marbles!"
"I'm good, Win." He offered her his wry smile. "Besides, I am not hanging around for Joey and Johnny to personally send me into neverland."
"You were ready to go with Jacobs!"
"That was a bluff." Jimmy shrugged.
"Mr. Carrick, Miss South are you ready?" Officer Kilterage inquired. "We are heading out."
"Where, exactly are we going?" Windy seemed surprised by the request.
"To get started." Kilterage reminded the two about the agreement. "We had an agreement, Mr. Carrick."
"My life is a little..." Jimmy explained. "...complicated."
"Maybe a little distraction will help." Kilterage rebuffed Jimmy.
"Officer Kilterage, you know as well as any that if they see me out there, I'm dead." Jimmy offered an alternative. "Win, give Kilterage your cell phone number."
Windy scoffed. "No one gets my number. Officer Kilterage, may I have your number?"
"We need to start working on the missing women's cases." Kilterage added. "You agreed to help."
"How about Win and I get fifteen minutes with Benny instead." Jimmy suggested.
"And do what?"
"Information. Contacts inside the Fortune family." Windy sighed. "You want to clean the force up. This is step one ~ shaking the cage."
"So, where do we question Benny so no one knows?" Kilterage looked to the two for an answer.
"No we. Just Win and me." Jimmy smiled. "And we'll do that on the seventh floor."
Seventh Floor
"Officer Benny, let's get the formalities out of the way. I am James Carrick." Jimmy led the impromptu meeting. "I once investigated Joey Fortune and he eventually went to the penitentiary."
A disinterested Benny looked at Jimmy. "So why do you need me?"
Windy jumped in. "We want anything that will help us understand the web the Fortunes have weaved."
"And you just want me to give up all I know!" Benny barked.
"Well." Jimmy looked at Windy before turning his attention back to Benny. "Win and I go after you. How long will it take to find enough to ruin you and your career?"
"Who the hell do you think you are?" Benny jumped up. "I am nothing! No one! A waste of your time."
"Precisely." Windy agreed. "We don't want you."
"So you are after Joey?"
"Joey, Johnny, Robert junior and Senior." Jimmy raised and eyebrow. The whole damn web."
"You've been smoking something pretty strong." Benny laughed.
"Well, I do have a head injury." Jimmy echoed the laughter. "So what do you say? The name of the guy Frank Jacobs deals with."
"I am dead." Benny shook his head. "I'm fucking dead. You know that, right?"
"Jacobs doesn't know you are here." Windy reminded the cop. "Not even Henry knows you are up here."
"Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck!" Benny spun around and looked out the window. "I give you a name and I go?"
"Name, number, and his address." Jimmy tagged into the conversation.
Benny fell silent.
"Come on Win, let's end Benny's career." Jimmy looked back at the young cop. "It shouldn't take more than twenty minutes. I doubt if Jacobs' connections will help the rookie."
"Shut the fuck up!" Benny yelled from across the room. "I've got a name!" He crossed the floor. "Not a name ~ I only have initials."
"Well..."
"Her initials are L.G. Jacobs called her, Legs."
Jimmy looked at Windy before returning to Benny. "L.G.?"
"I've only ever seen her from the cruiser." Benny shrugged. "Tall, blond, and mean."
"Mean? How would you know from the car?" Windy walked back to Benny.
"Frank always came back to the car whipped up, swearing like a sailor."
"Where can we find this L.G.?" Jimmy grabbed the scrap of paper from the young cop. "Let's see if you are on the up and up."
Benny wrote a name and address in his note pad and ripped it out of the book. "The information is good." Benny stepped around Jimmy but Windy stood in his way. "Can I go now?"
Windy turned and allowed Benny to exit the room. Kilterage met him on the other side of the door. "Henry's waiting in the cruiser."
"Your friends are either crazy or stupid." Benny stared at Kilterage. "This better not come back on me."
Kilterage assured Benny. "Not even Henry knows you are up here. I told him you were visiting a friend."
Windy took the piece of paper. "How do we get to where we need to go, Jimmy?"
"Is my car still in the parking lot?" Jimmy suggested. "I haven't driven it in a couple of months."
Downtown Eastside
"A hundred and fifty bucks to park at the hospital?" Jimmy looked at Windy.
"It was sitting there for two months." Windy laughed. "You're lucky they didn't tow it!"
Jimmy parked a few blocks from the downtown Eastside address Benny gave them. "Do we trust a dirty rookie cop?"
"Maybe he is setting us up?" Windy added to Jimmy's distrust. "We should split up. I'll give you five minutes."
Windy and Jimmy stopped in front of the Army Navy store. He squeezed her hand and winked before continuing down the alleyway without hesitating letting the locals know he knew where he was headed.
A small group of downtown eastside residents watched Jimmy walk deeper into the alley while they shared a joint. One began to cough after taking a huge drag ~ Jimmy held his breath as he passed the group.
The deeper into the alley he stepped the less confident he was that he would find any answers. That was until a seedy man approached him.
Jimmy held a hand out in front of him. "Bro, whatever your selling I'm not interested."
The seedy man veered off and let Jimmy continue on. He checked the paper then the number on the alley door. "I think Benny is a fucking liar."
He stuffed the paper back in his pocket and rapped on the heavy metal door. Jimmy brashly peered directly into a camera then turned to check his back. He felt he was in a place that could swallow a person whole.
The door opened. "Your business?"
"What do you think?" Jimmy played the situation by ear. "Fuck me, I'm here to talk with L.G."
"Who sent you?"
"Jacobs." Jimmy turned and began walking away.
"Get in here." The man swiftly opened the door. "How many do you have?"
Jimmy had no idea what he was referring to so his answer was purposely vague. "Depends on the price." He shut the door behind him.
Windy watched the door close. Then leaned against the building and checked her watch. "Five minutes, Jimmy."
Inside, the room, no bigger than ten feet by ten feet was empty with two heavy metal doors. A safety area for the shady deals that go down. Jimmy waited only a minute in the room for the man to appear again. "Six-fifty per. She'll take six."
"I have five but I want eight-fifty per." Jimmy, still with no idea what commodity they were negotiating, firmly countered. "And I want a face to face with Legs."
The man stared at Jimmy. "I wouldn't call her by that name. If you want to live."
"I have two minutes." Jimmy tried to hurry the man.
"She also doesn't like to be rushed."
"I don't like waiting." Another bold statement from the man in search of answers.
Moments later the man returned with a woman.
"L.G.?" Jimmy tried to get a look at the woman.
"Why isn't Jacobs here?" The woman dressed in a power suit stepped around the seedy man. "You?!"
Jimmy couldn't believe his eyes. "It can't be!"
Lana, Jimmy's former lover. The woman he believed to be dead stood in front of him ~ momentarily ~ before she quickly retreated back through one of the doors. Jimmy tried to follow but the seedy man pulled a knife.
"Time for you to die!"
Jimmy tilted his head before attacking, grabbing the wrist of the seedy man with his right hand while simultaneously striking him with his left fist. The first blow just startled the man. The second knocked the man out.
"Lana!" Jimmy yelled as he tried to open the door she disappeared into. "Lana!" How the hell is that possible?
The seedy man began to move, Jimmy put his size eleven foot on his chest. "You have two seconds to tell me who that woman is."
"Jacobs didn't send you!"
"Jacobs is so small-time I had to get rid of the fucker." Jimmy quickly reached down and pulled the man to his feet.
"I guarantee she will be the one who kills you!" The man with blood leaking from the corner of his mouth laughed. "You are already dead!"
A sharp knock at the door caught Jimmy's attention.
"Jimmy!" Windy roared. He opened the door while pressing the man against the wall.
Windy looked at Jimmy's eyes. "What is it?"
"You wouldn't believe me, Babe." Jimmy shook his head.
"Who is he?"
"The door man." Jimmy pressed the man for one answer. "The woman ~ she's Russian, isn't she?"
"Russian? What woman?" Windy pulled Jimmy's attention from the seedy man.
"Lana."
"Impossible!"
"Yeah, impossible. Right." Jimmy dragged the man to the door Lana retreated. "Open it!"
"I can't! No key!"
"Bull shit! Open it!" Jimmy was finished with people lying to him. He rammed the seedy man's head into the steel door ~ knocking him out a second time.
"Really, Jimmy?!" Windy yelled.
"We're getting through that door!"
"At what cost?"
"Any, Win. Any, I have to know." Jimmy explained as he rifled through the man's pockets finding a set of keys. "Win, it was her."
"Jimmy." Windy pulled at her hair. "She is dead."
He unlocked the door. "I guess we'll find out." Jimmy took off leaving Windy shaking her head. "Come on, Win!"
The long hallway behind the door turned into a maze. Each turn frustrated Jimmy slowing the fifty-something year old man. Finally he stopped at the exit and Windy wrapped her arms around Jimmy.
"Come on, Babe." She gave him a tender kiss. "Let's get out of here."
"Win." Jimmy return a kiss to the woman he loved.
Windy took his hand and took the lead out the door and into the back alley. Her hand squeezed Jimmy's a little tighter causing him to pull her body close sensing danger.
"Look at you two?" A woman's voice rang out though they couldn't find its source.
Jimmy pulled Windy towards the light of Hasting Street. "That's not the woman." But I know that voice too. I just can't place it. His heart has never raced like this before. Why am I so nervous? "Win!"
Windy frowned. "Right beside you, Jimmy."
He pulled her in front of him, protecting her from any danger he put her in. "Run!" He nudged her. Windy took off with Jimmy hot on her heels.
With his heart pumping harder than it has ever pumped, he reached Hastings Street and into Windy's arms.
