3 - Sticky Rice
Dana and Jimmy locked eyes as if they were about to start world war three. "Did it just get colder in here?" Jordan scoffed. "Wow, you two need to grow up!" She snapped her fingers to draw their gaze from each other.
"Jordan!"
"Mom?" The teenager first faced off with her mother. "Relax and sit down." Jordan angrily pointed to her seat. Then slapped Jimmy's elbow. "You too, old guy!"
"Old guy?" He half-laughed as he gave the teenager a look. "Really?"
Dana laughed then caught an odd friendly glare from Jimmy.
"Not everyone can evade aging as well as you, Dani." Jimmy actually offered a compliment to his ex-girlfriend, though one he never intended to give.
"Dani?" Jordan frowned. "Can we just sit down already?" She waited until the two pulled chairs under them. "Finally!"
"Can we agree, the past is the past?" Dana made a suggestion to her ex-boyfriend. "Please?"
Jimmy paused, not ready to let go of the way it all ended all those years ago. He looked to Jordan and knew bringing up the past would not help anyone. He made eye contact with Dana again before answering. "Agreed."
"When I called Windy." Dana began.
"Right, why do you stay in contact with Windy?" Jimmy frowned.
"Why do you still have an ex-girlfriend in your life?" Dana returned.
"She's more than..." Jimmy was interrupted.
"Oh oh oh, more?!"
"You two are acting like teenagers!" Jordan tried to take control of the bickering adults. "For the love of God, just let the past go!" The teenager shot daggers from her eyes to let them know how serious this was.
Jimmy paused before offering a nod as he looked to the door where a couple entered. He couldn't take his eyes off the affectionate couple. His mind went directly to Lana laughing and dancing around her apartment.
Jordan and Dana's conversation now included Jimmy. "What do you think? Jimmy?" Dana looked for his approval.
"What?" Jimmy heard nothing of their conversation. "About what?" He frowned.
"Could you please pay attention for two freaking minutes?" Dana ranted. "Your daughter's life is at stake here. What is so important about that couple?"
"Nothing." Jimmy pointed to the man and young woman, "they just look... forget it."
"The conversation is right here!" Dana scolded him.
"Can we continue this conversation later? I think I should leave ~ now."
"Jimmy?!" Dana grabbed his arm. "You are supposed to be getting to know your daughter."
He turned to his daughter. "Jordan, trust me when I say I will be there for you when it matters." Jimmy offered a wry smile. "But right now, I just need to get out of here."
Jordan looked at the emptiness expressed in his eyes. "You know where Mama lives."
Dana grabbed at Jimmy's leather jacket. "But call first. I don't want any surprise visits."
"Dani, you are the last woman I want to surprise." Jimmy pulled his arm from Dana's grasp leaving her a little embarrassed at his suggestion.
Jordan pulled her mom out of her seat and left the Starbucks headed for home. She leaned heavily on her mother feeling weak from her activities of the morning. "Maybe we should have asked for a ride?"
"Damnit, what is wrong with that man?" Dana shook her head. "Just when we find him he acts all crazy."
"Mom, maybe cut him some slack."
"Jordan, you need a kidney." Dana held onto her daughter even tighter. "You need help right now!"
Before the two crossed the parking lot Jimmy pulled up next to the mother and daughter.
"Why stop now?" Dana barked at her ex-boyfriend.
"First things first." Jimmy knew his self pity looked bad and tried to make amends. He got out of his car and opened the passenger door before flipping the passenger seat forward. "Dani?"
Jordan leaned into Jimmy who held on a little too tightly. "Relax, old guy. I am not going anywhere."
Jimmy released his python-like grip on his daughter. Dana pulled the seat back so Jordan could get in. "Be careful, Jimmy." She cautioned.
He gently swooped Jordan up in his arms and guided her into the very comfortable leather sport seat. "All good?"
"Yeah." Jordan now felt embarrassed from being so weak. "It's like you've done it before."
"Yeah, maybe." He fastened the seat belt for his daughter and returned to his seat behind the wheel. "All set?" He heard no objections.
Dana leaned forward to ask a question Jimmy knew she would ask. "Why was it so important for you to leave the restaurant?"
"Do you really want to know?" Jimmy looked at Dana in the rearview mirror. "Jordan, would you like to know?" Jimmy looked at the teenager who quickly gave a deliberate nod. "Okay."
"That couple made me think of everything I just lost..."
"Wait a minute. Hold on, Jimmy!" Dana reached forward and held her hand over his mouth preventing him from speaking. "Why bring Windy up!"
He pulled Dana's hand from his mouth. "Not Windy! Her name was Lana." Jimmy countered. "She was...well, we'll leave that for another day. "
"Why?" Jordan reached out to her father.
"It just isn't time to tell you yet."
"Just let it be, Jordan, Honey." Dana reached forward around the seat.
"Guys! I'm right here!" Jordan yelled out. "I want to know, Mom!"
"Just maybe not right now." Dana tried to appease her daughter.
"I'm not a baby, Mom." Jordan rolled her eyes. "So stop treating me like one."
"Jordan, there will be time to talk about this." Jimmy waited for her to make eye contact with him. "First, let's get you home."
"I am not a child." Jordan looked out the window. "Everyone needs to get over this." As she spoke her energy began to drain from her body and her eyes closed.
"Jordan? Jordan?!" Jimmy looked in the rearview mirror. "Dani, what is happening with Jordan?"
Dana shook her head. "She is exhausted. She needs to get home to her bed now."
"Okay, okay." Jimmy agreed and drove to Mama's. He parked in front of the garage door.
"You remembered? After all these years?" Dana seemed surprised.
"Wonders never cease." Jimmy shut the car off and eased Jordan from her seat. "Can you manage, Dani?"
Dana pushed the seat forward. "Yeah, I've got it." She reached into her purse pressing the remote for the garage door. The door opened and Dana led the way inside.
Jimmy followed his ex into her late father's office that still reeked of cigarette smoke, through the door then stood at the footing of the stairs. He easily kicked off his well worn shoes as he waited there.
Dana called out to her mother from there. "Mama, Jimmy is here."
With a happy tone in her voice, Mama called out. "Show him up, Dana."
"Take her to my old room." Dana spoke just loud enough for Jimmy to hear. "I'm sure you remember where that is."
Well duh. Of course I remember. The last place they made love that August morning after Dana's parents left for work. And the very place Jordan had been conceived. "I think I remember." He coyly suggested.
Mama waited at the top of the stairs wondering why her usually boisterous granddaughter was so silent. "What is wrong with Jordan?" She asked Dana but saw the teenager in Jimmy's arms.
Mama rushed ahead to prepare Jordan's bed.
Dana began to explain why their teenager is so weak. "At this point, she needs dialysis to take the toxins from her blood."
She turned to face Jimmy before entering her old bedroom. "There is no time to waste. The sooner she receives a kidney the less stress the rest of the organs go through. Got it?"
"I'm all in, Dani." The new father firmly indicated.
"Good, now let's get her into bed to recover." Dana turned and entered her childhood bedroom.
"Jimmy, it is really good to see you!" Mama's smile made him feel welcomed. "Gently with my precious granddaughter."
Jimmy returned the smile to Mama before making sure Jordan's landing in her bed was as soft as requested. He felt an instant bond with the child he never knew. In the moment he had before slipping his arms out from beneath her he wondered what life would have been like if only. Then Dana's voice brought him back to his reality. Seriously annoying, Dani.
Before standing Jimmy kissed Jordan's exposed cheek and whispered to the teenaged girl. "I'll be back to check on you, Kiddo." When he stood, the father could have sworn he saw the corner of her mouth curl into a smile.
He turned and Mama held her arms out to hug Jimmy. "It has been too long, Jimmy. But I am very happy to see you now. Come, I have a surprise for you."
Mama left the room leaving Dana and Jimmy looking at each other wondering at the surprise. He shrugged and as he stepped towards the door Dana stopped him.
"You know, Mama is very sentimental." Dana stepped even closer. "There is no way we are getting back together."
Jimmy's steely cold response gave her the answer she wanted to hear. "Agreed!" He side-stepped his ex and left the room to catch up to Mama.
Jordan spoke from her bed. "Why do you fight him so much? Even I can tell he doesn't love you anymore."
Dana looked down to her daughter. "I hope so. I still love your father and he'll never come back if he knows Jimmy wants me."
"Newsflash Mom, Jimmy is my father." Jordan weakly but correctly stated.
Dana softly smiled. "Get some rest. I will check on you later." She closed her old bedroom door and rushed down the hall.
Laughter rang out from the kitchen making Dana roll her eyes. As she made her way to the kitchen she heard Jimmy proclaim. "You remembered!"
"Oh no! Not the love letters." Dana rushed. "I am going to burn them once and for all! Mama!"
Jimmy could hear Dana's flip flops rapidly slap the soles of her feet and watched her enter the kitchen looking as though she had something to say. "Something wrong, Dani?"
She looked down to see Jimmy's favorite snack, pork-filled sticky rice balls fresh from the stove. "No, nothing wrong. I am just hungry. That's all." Dana grabbed chop sticks from the tall glass on the table and pulled a sticky rice pod from Jimmy."
Both Mama and Jimmy stared at her odd behavior. Dana looked back and with a shrug she questioned them. "What?"
Jimmy raised an eyebrow. "I thought you didn't like sticky rice. They made you..."
"She doesn't." Mama quickly corroborated Jimmy's recollection then headed off to check on something.
"Okay, what's up?" Jimmy questioned his ex-girlfriend.
"Nothing!" Dana frowned.
Jimmy eyed Dana who decided to pick away at the sticky rice to get to the pork filling. "Dani?"
"Fine! I think Mama wants us back together." Dana rudely pointed her chop sticks at Jimmy. "I love Brad!"
Jimmy rolled his eyes. "That ship sank long ago." He assured Dana. "Nothing to worry about here!"
"What's that supposed to mean?" Dana stood and in a hushed voice challenged Jimmy's statement. "Nothing to worry about here?" The mother took offense. "I wouldn't go back to you if you were the last..."
Mama rushed back to the kitchen with fear in her voice calling for her daughter. "Dana! Dana, it's Jordan!"
Dana bolted for her childhood bedroom.
"Crap." Jimmy quickly followed Dana but Mama stopped him.
"Jimmy, she's..."
"We can't wait for the ambulance!" Dana looked to Jimmy to respond knowing Jordan needed medical attention quickly.
