28 - The Trap
"Where are you taking me?" Mama rarely ventured out of Richmond. She had no need to. The best Asian malls are there and all her friends live near. "I have no idea where we are, Brad."
"Windy and Jimmy have an apartment on the other side of the bridge." Brad spoke calmly. "Jordan is with them.
Brad drove Mama's compact SUV over the Lion's Gate Bridge into West Vancouver. "Not too long now, Mama."
The Lion's Gate Bridge had been decked with Christmas lights and wreaths. With a light blanket of white and flakes falling gently, the mountain looked like snow globe that had been shaken and set down. Within this world there is no joy for Mama and her family.
"I feel deeply troubled Brad." Mama looked to her son-in-law. "As if I will never see my daughter ever again."
"Don't say that, Mama!" Brad laid his right hand on her arm and confidently exclaimed. "I will find her!"
The Apartment
The two arrived at the apartment with Mama reaching for Jimmy. Brad explained their morning, heightening the fears of everyone present. Jordan embraced her grandmother and walked her to the livingroom.
"She's walking? Jordan's walking?"
Windy pulled Brad and Jimmy into the kitchen. "Where would Frank Jacobs take Dana?"
"Well, we could call the Richmond Police. Find out if he took her into custody." Jimmy didn't look sold on Frank taking her somewhere he would be questioned about why he took her in.
"Maybe he took her to the Fortune mansion?" Windy shrugged. "Let me check the cameras.
"You look like crap, Brad." Jimmy showed concern for Dana's man.
"We slept in Dana's childhood bed." He rubbed his neck. "I didn't sleep until she went downstairs this morning."
"I'd ask if you wanted to crash but under the circumstances I know the answer to that." Jimmy patted Brad's shoulder. "We'll find her."
Windy gathered the men's attention. "I have a Richmond police cruiser entering the property."
Jimmy slid to the right with his chair smashing into Windy's. "Sorry Win. Can you get the number of the cruiser?"
"You think more than one Richmond cruiser would be there?" Windy responded with a disbelief.
"If I'm going in, I want to know it is Jacobs."
"Okay, give me a second."
"This Jacobs a-hole! An old man said he roughed Dana up." Brad punch his own hand. "Wait! You said you're going in?"
"Well, not me." Jimmy nodded with a smile.
"What are you thinking, Jimmy?" Windy tilted her head before leaning it on her elegant hand.
"It looks like they are throwing a party over there."
"Yeah, and?"
"Annnnd what party is complete without ah hey hey." Jimmy laughed.
Windy rolled her eyes. "Jack Legend? Ugh. How is that going to help anything?"
"You know? In my mind you were jumping up kissing me like you wanted to have my baby. But this is your reaction?" Jimmy lost a little enthusiasm.
"This." Windy pointed to her face. "Is a response to a..." Windy frowned. "Let me work on something. Go get your Jack Legend props. And take Brad with you!"
"Huh?" Brad questioned Windy.
"I want some time with our girls." Windy tilted her head to Jordan and Mama. "They need some confidence Dana is coming back."
"Right!" Brad got to his feet and grabbed Jimmy who was about to kiss Windy for believing in him. "Come on, Loverboy."
"Hey Win, can you see me as Mike Reno from Loverboy?" Jimmy was pulled out of the apartment by Dana's husband.
They returned four hours later with the Jack Legend duffle bag. A baby blue bag with gold handles and the Jack Legend branded logo on both sides of the bag. Jimmy seemed proud to finally be sharing his past with Jordan and Mama.
Jordan pulled on Jimmy's shirt."Show me the Meat Loaf wig, Dad!" She pulled something hairy from the bag. "Ewwww!" She dangled the sticky hairy mass from her finger and thumb.
"Ah, Freddie!" Jimmy straightened the Freddie Mercury mustache and pressed it to his face but one side fell from its place. "Crap! I hope I have another one!"
"Here!" Jordan discovered a mustache in a sealed wrapper.
Jimmy tried the mustache on channeling his inner Freddie. "I want to break free, oh how I want to break freeee!"
"Jimmy." Windy spoiled his mood. "Let's go over your plan, Jack."
Jimmy handed Jordan his bag to go through. "Have at it!"
The next hour Windy, Brad and Jimmy worked out a plan to get inside and see if Dana was there and safe. "No cell phones. There has to be no connection to any family member in case this goes south."
"I don't get why you don't take Mama's cellphone." Brad stood and paced.
"Look at Jordan." You want her to be safe, right?" Jimmy countered the other dad.
Windy suggested he's prepared. "Jimmy can handle this. He has been in situations much more dangerous ~ New Orleans, seven countries in Asia, the downtown Eastside."
"I thought you were a writer! A reporter?" Jimmy shrugged. Brad frowned. "Who the hell are you?"
"I missed a deadline in February so I broke my contract as a writer." Windy looked away. Jimmy half-laughed. "I don't think anyone will hire me as a reporter after Robert Fortune openly threatened legal action against anyone who would.
I'm out of options for a viable career."
Brad looked as though a light went on. "You don't plan on coming out!"
"What? No, Brad!" Jimmy assured Brad differently. "I am the only one who knows these bastards. I know what to expect ~ for the most part."
"For the most part?" Brad pointed to Jordan and Mama. "They think the world of you." He sat back into the chair. "You're pretty cool."
"Brad." Jimmy chuckled. "Thanks, you're a pretty good cool too ~ but I plan on coming out of that place with Jordan's mother. I'm not much for suicide missions."
"I need to be part of this!" Brad stared at Jimmy. "You need help with something. Everyone needs help!"
"Windy has always been there for me. Right Win?" Jimmy reached his hand out and she placed her hand in his.
"They have never seen me." Brad stood. "I could be your talent agent or your manager." He poked Jimmy's shoulder.
"Brad?" Jimmy looked up at Brad. "If things go bad and you are there, Jordan loses all her parents."
"Are you trying to be the hero? Dana always said you wanted to be the hero!"
"At one point I wanted to be her hero. But that time has passed. I got everyone into this. I owe it to everyone to get your wife back. Set things right so your family can get back home."
"You owe me nothing. Without you, I doubt if I would've shown up."
Jimmy frowned. "Why?"
"Jealousy." Brad admitted.
"Are you serious? That woman idolizes you!" Jimmy shook his head. "She reminds me every time we see each other!"
"Not Dana. You idiot!" Brad just looked at Jordan.
"Oh."
"Now she knows you are Jack Legend, it feels as though I'm an after thought." Brad made his point.
Jimmy smiled.
Windy frowned. "Why are you smiling? You have that crazy look in your eyes, Jimmy. Everything up until now has been crazy but has its merits. Don't add something bone-headed."
"Win? Trust me."
"You understand, these people kill people whenever they feel threatened, Jimmy." Windy's tone took on a seriousness that made the two men focus on her. "Brad, we can't take the chance. You are amazing for wanting to rush in after Dana."
"Amazing? Win?"
"Jimmy!"
"But I don't see how one guy can get in, find Dana and get out of a mansion full of mobsters, henchmen, and a dirty cop."
"Well ~ when you say it like that, Brad maybe I should let you do this. Do you have a better plan, Drummer Boy?"
"Okay, I've got nothing." Brad backed off being the man with the plan. "But I can help."
"Win? What do you think?" Jimmy raised an eyebrow to his girl.
"Jimmy." Windy pressed her lips together. "You go in with a microphone and an earpiece." She looked at Brad. "You're the back up plan. From here. I only send you in if Jimmy is in dire need."
"Okay. Okay. I can live with that." Brad nodded with a look of satisfaction.
"I'll get the microphones." Windy slipped away to her room.
"She's something else, Jimmy."
"Yes. She is."
"Is it true? Is it true she asked you to marry her?" Brad smiled.
"It was her turn." Jimmy dead-panned.
"She wear the pants?"
"When she wears a dress, you better not piss her off. Just an FYI." Jimmy's tone suggested he was not joking.
"Okay, I have four." Windy laid a towel on the kitchen table and placed the microphones on it. "Now change into that hideous leisure suit. The one that only your mother could love you in."
Brad laughed. Jimmy smacked the drummer. "This I've gotta see!"
"See what you've done, Win?" Jimmy rolled his eyes. "You always loved it before and don't say you didn't."
Windy waited for Jimmy to leave before suppressing her laughter while shaking her head making Brad yelp.
Jimmy grabbed the suit from the front closet, dressed and returned to the kitchen to yet more laughter from his fiance and his ex-girlfriend's husband.
"Yeah nice, guys!" He stood in front of Windy in a baby blue leisure suit, a colorful silk shirt, and a gold medallion with cut stones hanging from his neck glittering among his chest hair. "Shoes! Damn where are my shoes?" Jimmy took off for the livingroom.
Brad was brought to the floor with laughter. "Those are the biggest lapels I've ever seen! Hey Jimmy, the 1970s called asking for your shirt!"
Windy did her best to suppress her laughter.
"Dad!" Jordan's eyes seemed to pop from their sockets. "Ah, nice suit?" It was as if she took pity on Jimmy. "Let me help you with that lapel." With a mother's touch she untucked the lapel, straighten the shirt over his slightly larger belly before giving him a loving smile.
"Are my shoes in the duffle bag?"
"All I can see are these clown shoes!" Jordan chortled.
"Ugh! You too?"
"Dad ~ this is a suit only a daughter could love you in." She stifled a laugh. "Let me know when you find that daughter."
Brad slapped the kitchen table while howling.
"Drummer Boy?!"
"Ah, sorry. Ahem." Brad coughed to help him stop laughing.
Jimmy slipped the shoes on. "Ah hey hey." Elvis made his appearance.
"Ah, Elvis you are needed in the kitchen." Windy waited by the sink shaking a large bottle of hydrogen peroxide.
Jimmy ran his fingers through his hair. "Right, forgot about that detail."
Mama stood next to Jimmy. "I love Elvis, Jimmy. You look handsome." She leaned in. Jimmy offered his cheek but she whispered into his ear. "Bring my baby home."
Jimmy embraced Mama making everyone stop with the teasing. "I promise, Mama. She'll be home in your arms soon."
Mama released him. "I believe in you, Jimmy."
"You always make me feel invincible, Mama." Jimmy lovingly kissed Mama's forehead. "I love you."
Jimmy just about melted Windy from thirty feet as tears welled up in her eyes. Brad noticed Windy's reaction and stopped his laughing.
Brad took the pressure from Windy. "Show time, Jack. Let's make that hair match your shoes."
