27 - Consequences
Dana and Brad settled into Dana's old bedroom at Mama's townhouse. She was determined to head back to her life she had before she headed north to save Jordan. It had been a restless night.
Mama boiled water for tea allowing the kettle to whistle while watching for her daughter to appear.
"Mama, what are you doing?" Dana removed the kettle from the gas burner. "The water's almost boiled away!"
"Dana, sit." Mama gracefully directed her daughter to take the chair across the table.
Dana did as directed.
"Where is my only granddaughter?" Mama drank from her tea cup then stared at her daughter.
Dana pulled her hair tie off her wrist to secure her heavy black head of hair. "At the apartment in West Vancouver."
"Why are you and Brad not with her?" The seriousness was evident in her voice and her rigid posture.
Dana filled the kettle with water and returned it the gas range before igniting the flame. She took her seat again. "Jimmy's not the angel you think he is."
"You know how I think?"
"Mama, I know you love him more than Brad." Dana
"Have I ever said those words?" Mama moved her tea cup and saucer aside before leaning forward. "You love Brad, I love Brad. That is just how it works. He has always been there for you and Jordan."
"But you always fawn over Jimmy when he is here. You make me feel as if I made the wrong decision."
Mama laid her right arm on the table with her palm up. "Dana Honey, I love Brad and I love Jimmy." She followed the same gesture with her left hand. "These two things can exist together for me."
"You make it difficult for me having them both on the same level." Exasperated, Dana stood to check the kettle.
"They are equally important to Jordan."
"Yeah well, he is going to be dead soon anyway."
Mama stood, visibly shakened. "Dana!"
"It's true Mama! A mob family is after him and I need to get my baby out of the city." Dana pulled her mother close. "You should come with us!"
"Dana, I am not leaving." Mama pat her daughter's back softly. "I am an old lady. I do not like the heat there."
"They are dangerous, Mama!"
"I will not live in fear."
Dana turned the stove off. "I need a coffee." She kissed her mother. "Tell Brad I just went to Starbucks." She rushed down the stairs, kicked off her flip flops and jammed her feet into her running shoes before grabbing a jacket.
She slowly walked the sidewalk of Number One Road towards the local Starbucks. Looking down at her dirty running shoes, she thought aloud. "I haven't ran in months. I'm forty-four, out of shape." A cold wind chilled her. "Damn, California is looking good right now!"
Frank Jacobs
Frank Jacobs just started a new position with the Richmond police services after recovering from his accident and being shot. His connections with politicians made it easy to land a cushy cruiser position with little responsibility with a different police force.
Jacobs' loyalty to the Fortune family guided his daily activities for finding Jimmy. Before leaving the Steveston harbor Frank checked his notes he made after Joey recovered enough from the ordeal Jimmy put him through.
"Confrontation at the Richmond hospital. Carrick took Sledge, Roco, and Johnny down before taking Johnny to the Cambie Street Bridge."
Flipping the page he discovered more notes from a month ago. "A woman and a girl. Carrick has a kid?" He chortled as he started the cruiser. "If I can't find you, I'll find your kid. You'll show your face then, you fucking bastard."
He passed Dana driving north on the same road she walked. "Nice ass." He shrugged. "For an older woman." Her pants fit a little tight after months of worry and emotional eating.
He parked the cruiser right in front of the emergency department entrance.
"Hey Frank!"
Jacobs turned to see another one of Fortune's muscle manning the hospital building security. "Eh, Pauly!"
"Gonna be long, Frank?"
"Who knows. Why?" Jacobs stared at the man lower on the Fortune hierarchy.
"Ah nothing." Pauly defused what could have been a challenging situation by suggesting Jacobs next move. "Better get out of this cold fucking weather, Frank." He blew into his exposed hands.
"Yeah. I won't be long, Pauly." Jacobs jogged into the hospital in search of information that would help to find Jimmy.
Pauly returned to the heated security hut. "Fucking Jacobs just parked in front of the doors."
"You should tow the bastard!"
"I'd be dead by tonight. No fucking way, Bruh!" Pauly grabbed his Yeti coffee mug. "I hate being the bottom feeder in a multi-million dollar organization." He guzzled the warm coffee he babied since his shift started hours ago.
Twenty minutes later Pauly witnessed Jacobs running to his cruiser. "What the fuck has Franky fired up? I've never seen that man run!"
The two laughed as they watched the officer turn his lights and sirens on. People scattered as Jacobs didn't waste time getting out to Westminster Highway headed for Number One Road.
"He better watch it!"
"Who the fuck cares? At least he's gone!"
"Fuckin eh!" Pauly agreed before finding his chair again.
"Fuck me, that has to be Carrick's woman. I never forget an ass!" Jacobs slapped the wheel in jubilation. "Fuck Carrick, I can feel your neck in my fucking hands already!" The cruiser made speeds of up to seventy miles an hour on the crowded residential streets. With the lights and sirens giving him an easier path to drive.
"Where would you have been walking to? Groceries? Not likely." He looked up to see the Starbucks sign. "That's it. I'll bet any money she was getting coffee. Let's see if lady luck is still with me!"
Jacobs turned the lights and sirens off. "No need to scare her off." He laughed. "I could use a coffee."
Frank stood tall as he entered the coffee shop. He surveyed the seating area with his aviator sunglasses still on until they fogged up when he approached the counter to order. "Grande coffee ~ black."
The barista took only a moment to fill his order. "Thank you, Sir."
"Well, thank you very much, young lady!" Frank smiled showing his full set of teeth, mostly false. His teeth rotted from his poor diet. "Maybe you could help me? Have you seen an Asian woman, 'bout this tall." He held his level hand about shoulder height. Blue jeans, red jacket?"
"Just in the corner there, Sir." The barista pointed to Dana seated at the dimly lit corner table facing the open floor.
"Thank you, again." Frank removed his officer's cap and headed for Dana. But was flagged down by a well dressed CEO of one of the largest department stores in western Canada.
"Sir?" Frank addressed the man. "May I help you?"
The man simply pointed out the window to a rowdy group of teenagers.
"Shit!" Frank put his coffee on a table while making eye contact with Dana. "Ma'am."
He pushed the door open and called out to the loud group of high school kids dressed in their school uniform. "Break it up! Get to class you little pricks!" The students scattered feeding his ego.
Frank walked back to the door but discovered the absence of an exterior handle. "Exit only? Fuck me!" He rapped on the glass door trying to get someone's attention.
Dana answered the call to open the door for Jacobs. "Come in out of that cold wind!"
"Thank you, Ma'am!" Frank tipped his cap and entered. He watched Dana walk back to her table as he commented under his breath. "Nice ass."
He made his way directly to Dana. "Hello Ma'am. That was a kind gesture, letting me back in." Frank may have been trying to be friendly but came off as creepy.
Dana smiled a fake smile in return. "No worries, Officer." She took a sip from the coffee cup.
"Jacobs, Ma'am. Officer Jacobs." He smiled that same creepy smile. "May I sit?"
"Ah, I was just about to leave." Dana pulled the jacket zipper to her chin. "It's a bitter wind to walk in."
"Allow me to give you a ride to your home." Frank held his hand out.
"I am fine, the cold wind just makes me walk faster." Dana stood, ready to leave through the same door she let Frank back into the Starbucks.
"I insist, Ma'am."
"I insist that I choose my own way, Sir." Dana defied Frank.
"Alright, you asked for it." He pulled the handcuffs from his belt. "Turn around, Ma'am."
"Not a chance!" Dana tried to sidestep the officer.
Frank raised his voice. "Ma'am, please come quietly. Do not resist!"
Dana added everything together Windy and Jimmy spoke to yesterday. Her voice cracked. "You're that dirty cop, that took Jimmy from the hospital!"
Frank grabbed a wrist pressed the much smaller woman against the wall, leaned close and gritted his teeth before threatening Dana. "Shut the fuck up or I will kill you."
"Help! This man is a dirty cop! Help!" Dana struggled trying to fight loose from his strong grip. "Help!" One handcuff tightened onto her wrist.
The CEO approached Frank and Dana. "Sir, your badge number."
"Get out of my way or I will arrest you on obstruction charges!" Frank spit as he yelled.
"I am not obstructing anyone. There is ten feet between us." The man refused to let the situation go. "Your badge number, Sir."
"Fuck you!" Frank barked.
"We'll see who fucks who." The man dialed nine-one-one.
Frank angrily slapped the phone from the man's hand. "Ah, sorry sir, you shouldn't be so clumsy."
The man took a quick look at his name and badge number before having a stare down with the dirty cop. "Okay, okay." He held both hands up where Frank could see. "No objections, Sir. Do your duty."
"Fuck me, can you not see he is a dirty cop!" Dana fought for her freedom. "He's going to kill me!" But Frank secured the other handcuff sealing her fate.
Frank wrestled Dana out the door and threw her into the back of the cruiser. "You will die soon enough! Oh and so will your daughter and Carrick too!" The officer slammed the door.
"Jimmy, I'm going to kill you myself." Dana grumbled.
Mama's Townhouse
Brad made his way downstairs to the kitchen. "Good morning, Mama!"
"Good morning, Brad." Mama pulled a chair out for her son-in-law. "Tea?"
"Ah." Brad smiled. "I am more a coffee person. But sure."
"How did you sleep?" Mama tapped his shoulder. "Sit."
"Good, good Mama." He looked around. "Where's your feisty daughter?"
"Dana went for coffee." Mama looked at the clock on the wall. "She left about eight-thirty."
"That's a long time, Mama." Brad checked his watch. "It's almost eleven o'clock!" Brad jumped up.
"Check the Starbucks. She loves that place." Mama pointed. "Go left out the front door."
"Thanks Mama!" Brad slipped slipped a few times as he shot down the stairs in his sock feet. "No fucking phone! I feel naked."
He ran like he never ran before arriving at the Starbucks in less than two minutes. Brad ripped the door open. "Dana!" He shielded his eyes. "Dana are you here?!" He walked through the seating area. "Dana!"
The CEO overheard Brad yelling for Dana. "I need to go. I will call you back at noon." He stood then tucked the phone into his jacket pocket. "Sir!"
Brad turned quickly and faced the man dressed in a two thousand dollar business suit. "Have you seen a woman about your height, thick black hair, probably wearing blue jeans?"
The CEO nodded, raised his hands to suggest Brad calm himself before he spoke in a controlled voice. "An officer arrested a young woman."
"Young woman?"
"Well, young to me." The gray haired man in his late sixties continued. "Anyway, she was arrested by Officer Jacobs. Badge number 3319. I phoned and lodged a complaint at the way he treated her and me as well."
"Fuck me! The dirty cop!" Brad slammed his hand onto the table. "He's going to use her as bait!"
He press his lips together, drew in a deep breath before letting out a screech. Brad ran, even faster, back to his mother-in-law's townhouse.
When he arrived the door was locked. He began to knock rapidly on her front door. "Mama! Mama!" He continued to knock loudly until the door opened.
"Brad! What is it?" Mama stepped back from her door. "Where's my daughter? Where's Dana?!"
"We need to go to West Vancouver." Brad gently moved past the elderly Asian woman. "Grab your purse, and a jacket." He looked down at her feet. Maybe shoes are needed."
"Dana will be there?" Mama grabbed at her son-in-law. "Brad?!"
"I hope Jimmy will know!" Brad opened the closet door. "Which jacket, Mama?"
"The purple one." Mama pointed to a mid-thigh length jacket then walked into her late husband's office to collect her purse. "I'm ready, Brad."
