23 - Under Pressure

Friday 4:30 pm

Robert Fortune showed up to the ICU department to transport Joey and Johnny to his father's home on the Sea shore in the posh West Vancouver. Windy watched from beyond the double doors connecting with the operation recovery area before slipping back up to the seventh floor.

Windy pulled Brad and a reluctant Dana into Jimmy's room to fill them in on the Fortune family leaving the hospital without incident.

"The transfer appeared cordial and surprisingly Joey was silent throughout the entire process." Windy shrugged. "Maybe it was Robert's influence or maybe he was just stewing from earlier in the day."

"Earlier?" Brad asked not familiar with Windy.

"I may have taken out Joey's slug and maybe knocked the mobster's son out after he tried to connect me to Jimmy."

Dana's eyes nearly exploded from their sockets. "You did what? Are you out of your freaking mind!" She began pacing Jimmy's room.

"You knocked him out?" Brad questioned Windy. "You're kidding, right?"

Jimmy chuckled.

"What's so funny, Jimmy." Brad looked down an the man wincing in pain.

"Twelve years of mixed martial arts." Jimmy wanted to laugh again but thought better of it.

"What about you?" Brad questioned Jimmy.

"Right hook to the body. Left cross to the chin. Sometimes I forget to set up the left cross." Jimmy gave a wry smile.

"Remind me not to piss the two of you off." Brad suggested.

"I had to learn how to protect myself after the first article about Fortune family activity was published. That didn't go well. So Win signed us up for MMA when we disappeared to my mom's for nearly a year in 2010." Jimmy looked to an annoyed Windy. "She stuck with it. I went to the street vendor and ate hot dogs."

Brad seemed to find it humor in it. Dana did not.

"What is it, Dani?" Jimmy frowned.

"You have been neck deep in this for over ten years?" Dana leaned down to give it to Jimmy. "I made a mistake trying to find you!"

"Yeah right!" Jimmy unfazed by Dana's intimidating confrontation. "Ever piss anyone off, Dani?"

"Enough!" Windy stopped the petty bickering between the two. "We will rent a place and watch the Fortunes while Jordan and Jimmy recover."

"And how do you suggest we pay for this?" Dana looked at Windy. "I haven't worked in six months and Brad doesn't get paid if he's not playing."

"Windy, do I have enough to cover an apartment in West Van?" Jimmy pointed to Windy.

"West Vancouver? Why there!" Dana couldn't fathom why to rent there.

Windy looked at Jimmy. "Enough for about three months." She paused. "Maybe sell your apartment on Granville just to make sure."

"Why West Van?" Dana asked again.

Jimmy made a snap decision. "Sell it furnished! I just remembered, my laptop's in Lana's apartment. I never want to go back to that building, Win."

Windy pointed to Brad. "Are you in on this?"

Brad nodded.

"Brad! This is crazy!" Dana looked out the window at the parking lot. "I am not spending time there with this jackass!"

"If the Fortune family figure out who you are. They will find you whether you're at Mama's or home in Pasadena."

"So we're dead, either way?" Dana, in full panic mode looked to be coming apart. "Jordan just made it through surgery and now what? Was this all for nothing?"

Jimmy shook his head. "Jordan will live a long life, Dani."

"How, Jimmy?" Dana looked at him in the hospital bed. "How can you guarantee that when you are laying there? This is crazy!"

"I have survived all these years." He tilted his head. "Thanks to Win. Who, by the way, proposed to me."

"Jimmy!" Dana shook her head. "How does that help our situation?"

"If I know Win." He looked up to the love of his life. "She will have a plan."

"Great!" Dana scoffed.

"Dani..." Jimmy stopped her from feeling Windy's wrath.

Dana stopped and took a seat next to Jimmy's bed. "So what's your plan, Windy?"

Windy started. "Brad take your rental car back."They can follow you wherever you go."

"Check." Brad gave the thumbs up.

"I will go to the safety deposit box and get the IDs." Windy held her index finger out. "Get cash from the account." She straightened a second finger. "Get the rental car." Her ring finger straightened. "Get the hell outta here!"

"As if it's that easy." Dana again scoffed. "What is the name on the ID? Sean Mendes?"

"Jack Legend." Windy looked directly at Brad.

"Wait! Who?" Brad frowned.

"Bradley Kerron meet Jack Legend." Windy tilted her head towards Jimmy. "Jack Legend meet the drummer at your last set in Vegas, Bradley Kerron."

"What'choo taking 'bout, Win?" Jimmy did his best Gary Coleman impersonation.

Brad scratched his head. "Jack Legend is many people." He gave Jimmy a closer look. "Which Meat Loaf song did you perform that night?

"Two outta three."

"Nazareth?"

"Love Hurts." Jimmy began to feel a little more lively, propping himself up on an elbow.

"Freddie Mercury song?" Brad continued.

"Oh, the last song of the night. Under Pressure."

"Wait wait wait! Windy you were there that night. We sat in the back. I introduced you to Brad!" Dana squinted at Jimmy. "No way you are Jack Legend!"

Windy smiled. "He was thirty pounds lighter. "Atkin's!"

"Win? You knew Brad seven years ago?" Jimmy stared at his friend.

Windy shrugged. "It was a perfect night. Why spoil it with ~ with complications? I told them I had to catch a flight."

"Well, you didn't lie." Jimmy pointed to Windy before looking at Dana. "We returned to Van City."

"Your car was towed!" Windy laughed.

Jimmy shrugged. "I'm always late and my car gets towed. I can't help it!"

"Enough of the car crap." Brad looked serious. "We played a complete set together and you didn't even say thank you?"

"Ah ~ Jack Legend didn't thank you." Jimmy chortled. "You threw me off a few times, Drummer Boy."

"Smartass!" Brad flipped Jimmy the bird.

"Okay you two!" Windy walked past Brad. "We have to set this up now."

Dana rushed behind the two leaving. "I have to see, Jordan!"

Jimmy laid back down and thought back to that night. Brad was my drummer? I bet he is pissed. He didn't miss a rim shot all night! I should apologize. He closed his eyes and easily found sleep.

Brad and Windy

Brad looked at the Jack Legend fake driver's license. "He was a blonde?"

"It wouldn't be a disguise if he looked like he does now, would it?" Windy reasoned.

"We actually look pretty similar." Brad spoke with contempt.

"I guess Dana likes a certain look in a man." Windy planted a seed though moved on quickly to the pieces of plastic. "AmEx, Mastercard, and VISA. All have tap so no remembering numbers." She put them back in the ostentatious leather folder before handing it to Brad.

"What the Fudge?" Brad looked at the ugliest billfold ever made. "Do I have to carry this with me?"

"This is Jack Legend's billfold." Windy explained. "Jack is bigger than life and would never have a plain brown wallet! It's is part of his persona."

"This is crazy as hell!"

"Good! Because crazy is all we have!" Windy reminded Brad. "This is really to give Jordan time to recover. When she does recover, the three of you can leave."

"What about you and Jack?"

"Jimmy." Windy corrected Brad. "We continue the fight against the Fortune family."

"Seems like a lost cause." Brad shook his head. "A mob family always has someone to take over."

"Not if I can help it."

This time Brad scoffed. "You will take out the entire Fortune family?"

"Watch me." Windy spoke with a confidence that seemed mad to Brad.

"Well, let's get everything together so we can protect our families!" Brad dropped the mission impossible attitude. "I believe you will do everything in your power to make this happen so, I'm all in."

"You say that now, Drummer Boy." Windy walked ahead with long confident strides. "Pick it up! And remember Jack Legend lives with flare."

"Woo hoo."

Windy rolled her eyes. "Not Rick Flair, dumb ass! I meant style!" She clicked her tongue. "Musicians!"

"Your man is a musician!" Brad pointed out.

"He is a hard nosed, soft hearted kid at heart who cares more for others than he does for his own life." Windy stopped and pressed her index finger into Brad's chest. "He was only Jack Legend a handful of times to raise money for Van City's homeless. How many musicians do that?"

"Yeah, you have a point." Brad rubbed his chest. "And a pointy finger! Did you just sharpen those talons?"

"Come on Jack, keep up."

Brad watched Windy walk as if she were on her runway of life. "Fricken cat-woman!"

"I heard that!" Windy paused. "Not funny, Drummer Boy."

It took Windy and Brad a few hours to get the rental SUV, the apartment and a stock of food and drink to last about a week.

"A Lincoln Aviator! Why?" Brad looked to Windy.

"You still have to ask that question?"

"Well, when you say it like that, no." Brad adjusted his new aviator glasses, and smiled as he drove.

"Let's hope all this gives those two time to heal." Windy poked her bushy curly hair with a pen.

"Tell me, how did Jimmy get so lucky finding you?" Brad briefly looked at Windy then back to the heavy traffic on the Lion's Gate Bridge.

"Who said he was the lucky one?" Windy watched the people at Lookout Point taking photos of the bay as Brad slowed the SUV to a crawl in the traffic. "I would say we both are lucky, Brad."

"Got it." Brad had to pay attention and leave the small talk for another time.

Jimmy's Room 7pm

The Fortune Family crime boss took a seat in the visitor's chair next to Jimmy's bed. He tapped his ring on the brass eagle atop his walking stick waking the easy slumbering kidney donor. "My patience is limited, Mr. Carrick."

Jimmy spoke without opening his eyes. "I recognize your voice."

"Good." Mr. Fortune leaned forward onto his walking stick. "Do not press your luck. I gave my son up ~ once. Not you or anyone else will take him from me again."

Jimmy opened his eyes.

"I can not leave this to chance, Mr. Carrick." The Boss stood, exposed a small caliber pistol before explaining. "I usually leave this part for someone who is disposable but I need to know you will never haunt my family ever again."

Robert Fortune Senior cocked the hammer to the twenty-two caliber pistol. "I will see you in...."

Christina rushed through Jimmy's door. "Mr. Carrick, you are in need of assistance?"

Robert Senior hid the pistol. He looked down to see Jimmy's only defense ~ the call button.

"Who are you?" The head nurse questioned the visitor. "Only family members in these rooms.

"I am ready to leave." Mr. Fortune leaned down to Jimmy's level and whispered. "Disappear, Mr. Carrick. Or you are dead."

"Let Mr. Carrick rest, Sir." Christina motioned for the tall elderly man in his seventies to exit the room.

Mr. Fortune left the room without accomplishing his goal. A first for this man who successfully grew his empire beginning as a dock worker in 1958. Moving up to street thug in the 1960s. By 1972 he took over the Bargoluli group and has not released his grip of this coastal city since.

It will take a miracle to disappear.

It will take a seismic shift to release the pressure the Fortune family has on this coastal city.
