17 - Second Beach

Santos

"Kilterage?" Santos stopped at the most junior officer's desk. "We're going to Second Beach. Come with me."

"Want me to radio Officer Jacobs?" Kilterage offered as she grabbed her police cap.

"No, I have a funny feeling he is up to something." Santos picked up the pace.

"Any ideas what that would be, Sir?" Kilterage's shorter legs were moving much faster than her shift leader's just to keep up.

"Not really, just going on gut instincts here, Officer." Santos opened the door to the parking lot where he was greeted by the day shift officers filing in to change. He acknowledged every officer before getting into his cruiser.

Second Beach with 'The Boss'

Jacobs opened the rear door to remove Jimmy from his cruiser without concern for his injured foot. "Get out!"

Jimmy tried to get both feet out of the car so he could stand but Jacobs grabbed his handcuffed hands and yanked him around like a ragdoll.

He tossed Jimmy to the ground to prove his dominance. "Get up!"

Jimmy struggled with his hands being handcuffed but managed to find the strength in his left leg to stand. Then he searched for a part of his right foot that would allow him to stand with as little pain as possible. "You better hope I..."

Jacobs threw a punch with his right hand dropping Jimmy to the ground again. "Don't threaten me!" The cop towered over him. "After my boss is done with you, I will make sure you never talk again. Capish?"

"Fuck you, Jacobs!" Blood freely flowed from his left nostril. Jimmy fought is way back to his knees before he wiped his nose with his knuckles. "Uncuff me and see how confident you are."

"Don't you get it? This will not be easy for you, Carrick!" Jacobs circled Jimmy as if he were his prey. "You will beg for death...and I will give it to you! You stinking bastard."

From where Jimmy knelt he had to agree with the bad cop. Bite your tongue, Jimmy-boy don't give him a reason to pop you before old-man Fortune gets here. You need to survive this.

Everyone on the Way

Windy tapped the dashboard and briefly spoke to her car. "Come on, Breezy baby." Windy crossed the Granville Street bridge at five minutes to six traveling almost fifty miles an hour but slowed for the Pacific Street off ramp then back up to forty miles an hour.

She heard police chatter on the interceptor radio to be on the lookout for a vehicle speeding into the downtown core. Windy eased off the accelerator. "You can't help Jimmy if you are getting your car impounded."

She proceeded but at a much reduced speed.

Kilterage looked at Santos. "Think that has anything to do with Officer Jacobs, Sir?"

Santos flicked the lights on but not the sirens. "Uh-huh." His eyes locked on the street ahead searching ahead for potential hazards. He reached the speed of fifty miles an hours as they crossed the Burrard Street bridge before rapidly slowing his cruiser to take the left hand turn onto Pacific Street.

Windy noticed the police cruiser as she approached the same intersection and slowed to a stop. "I wonder if they're looking for us, Breezy?"

As Santos made the turn, Kilterage looked to her right to see Windy's car stopped at the curb.

"If they aren't after me...they must be headed to Second Beach!" Windy continued to think aloud. "I must have started something." She tilted her head. "I hope something good! Come on Breezy."

The two neared Second Beach. "Keep your eyes peeled, Kilterage. I have a feeling Jacobs is here."

"Do you think this could have anything to do with the other night, Sir?" Kilterage offered.

"Hmmmm." Santos rubbed his chin before issuing an order. "Check the hospital to see who Jacobs suspect was."

Kilterage used the police issued cellphone and contacted VGH searching for the unknown suspect. After a brief exchange with the emergency department she questioned the answer given to her. "Are you certain?"

"What is it, Kilterage?"

"They do not have any records of Officer Jacobs with a suspect, Sir."

"That is crazy." Santos cracked his neck. "Ask them for the names of the patients they treated over night. Maybe one will ring a bell?"

Kilterage did what her shift leader asked. "Okay thanks for your help, ma'am." She looked at Santos. "James Carrick!"

Santos pressed the accelerator to the floor. He put two and two together. "Damn, Jacobs you really do have it in for Carrick!" He flicked the toggle for the sirens as he approached Second Beach.

Windy hung back a couple blocks following the cruiser's lights. When she heard the sirens she increased her speed until she was a mere half block behind Santos.

Jacobs could hear the siren from several blocks away and panicked. Robert Fortune Senior was late. "Fuck me! Come on Carrick, we're going to see Fortune at his mansion." He grabbed Jimmy by the handcuffs and dragged him to the cruiser.

Jimmy pulled down trying to slow Jacobs progress to the car. "You bastard, Jacobs!"

"Get in the fucking car, Carrick!" Jacobs grabbed Jimmy's jeans and rammed him into the back seat of the cruiser. You are dead now, Carrick!" He slammed the door, looked up to see lights from another cruiser.

Jimmy righted himself and pulled the seat belt awkwardly across his body eventually getting it secured.

"Fuck me! I shouldn't have told Kilterage where I was. Fuck fuck fuck!" He hammered the accelerator and gravel flew in the wake of his cruiser.

Lions Gate Bridge

Jacobs hastily made his way out of the Second Beach heading for the Lions Gate Bridge checking his rearview mirror. "Shit, Santos is back there!"

"You are screwed!" Jimmy taunted his abductor.

"Shut the fuck up, Carrick!" Jacobs elbowed the grid separating the two.

"Kilterage, ask Jacobs to pull over."

She picked up the radio. "Forty-two-twenty, Shift Leader suggests you pull over immediately."

"Suggest?" Santos scoffed then grabbed the radio from Kilterage. "Pull your car over, now!! This is an order, not a suggestion, Officer Jacobs!"

"Why is he headed for the Lions Gate?" Windy tried to put the puzzle pieces together. "Shit, I forgot to call Brad."

Brad answered his phone. "Windy? Where the hell are you?"

"Things are just a tad bit hairy. I think you should just go back to Dana and Jordan." Windy stressed.

Brad protested. "I am supposed to help get Jimmy back!"

"The risks are just too high, Brad. I've gotta go." Windy closely followed Santos who was now catching up on Jacobs.

Jacobs kept looking at his windshield. "I am not pulling over, Santos! You by-the-book bastard."

Morning traffic heading over the Lions Gate bridge began to build so Jacobs flicked the toggle for his emergency lights to get those vehicles out of his way.

Jimmy leaned forward to put a bug in Jacobs' ear. "You will never make it to Fortune's mansion!"

"Carrick, shut the fuck up or help me God I will put a bullet in your brain!" Jacobs threatened Jimmy to shut him up. It didn't work.

"Even if you do get there. Do you really believe he will welcome you even with me?" Jimmy kept the pressure on. "With the light you're shining on him you are as good as dead!"

"You really don't know how much he wants to see you, Carrick!" Frank began speaking wildly. "He wants to make you suffer for Joey and Johnny!"

"I had nothing to do with those two jackasses!" Jimmy would play that game until the brothers regain consciousness.

"My gut says you do!" Jacobs reasoned. "Why would Rocko and Sledge try to take you out."

"Who says they were taking me out?" Jimmy countered. "If Fortune put a hit out on me, I'd be dead already."

"This doesn't make sense!" Frank couldn't link the events.

"Why wasn't Fortune at Second Beach?" Jimmy started to play mind games with his captor. "He was going to take us both out."

"Then why didn't he do it?"

"You let your precinct know where you were." Jimmy pieced it together for Frank. "Someone in the precinct overheard this or they were listening in on the police radio. Either way they called the hits off."

"You're crazy! I am their best inside man!"

"Are you bragging or confessing, Jacobs?"

"Fortune would not take a cop out. You're crazy, Carrick!"

"If we make it to his Seaside mansion, we'll find out."

"You don't know Fortune!

"You are of no use to him now, Jacobs. You got me. That's all he ever wanted since Joey was convicted."

Jimmy distracted Frank long enough that Santos caught up to his cruiser. Kilterage could be heard trying to convince him to pull over.

Frank looked into the rearview mirror and could see his shift leader staring back at him. "Fuck me!"

Santos "Forty-two-twenty, pull your cruiser over now!"

Windy wanted to make sure Jimmy was still alive. Her car easily moved past Santos until she was level with Jacobs.

Jimmy looked out his window at Windy. "Now you're in trouble!"

"What the hell are you yapping about?" Jacobs didn't notice the black Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme to his left.

Windy nodded when she seen Jimmy then used both feet on her brake pedal falling back behind Santos again.

"What the hell was that about?" Santos checked his mirrors to get a look at where the car went. "Who the hell could that be? See if you can get the plates, Kilterage."

The three cars crossed the Lions Gate bridge at over sixty miles an hour. The road was about to looped and turn into Highway Ninety-Nine.

Jimmy used his left foot to repeatedly ram the back of Jacobs' seat causing him to lose focus and the cruiser swerved aggressively. Santos tried to avoid the lead cruiser but the crash bar on the front of his cruiser hooked into the back right wheel well of the lead car sending the two cruisers into a violent spin.

Windy slowed her classic car and had a front row seat to one of the wildest accidents unfolding in front of her.

The two cruisers hit the curb at fifty miles an hour sending both into the air twisting like pretzels falling from a bowl. The two vehicles ripped free of each other flipping several times eventually coming to rest about ten yards apart on a grassy hillside.

Windy cried out in fear for her friend. "Jimmy! Nooooooo!"
