16 - Abducting Jimmy
Jimmy turned his wheelchair to face Frank. "Fuck me! Officer Jacobs, what the hell is up your ass now?"
"Think you're tough?" Frank whipped Jimmy around and rushed him to the elevators without anyone seeing them. When he pressed the call button the doors opened immediately and the cop rushed him in. "Well tough guy, you are gonna take a little trip with me."
"It won't be the precinct, will it?" Jimmy huffed.
"Why do you say that, wise guy?"
"Wise guy? Look who's talking!" Jimmy fought Frank's grip and turned to face the cop. "You are on the take. I could smell it on you the other night."
Frank placed his hand on his weapon. "Just one move Carrick. Give me a reason!"
"A reason? Huh!" Jimmy snorted. "You would face a world of hurt." He paused. "In fact, you are in a world of hurt and that's why you're here! Isn't it, Jacobs?"
"Watch what you say you low-life, son of a bitch!" Frank appeared to be frothing at the mouth.
"You're calling me a low-life?"
Frank rushed Jimmy grabbing his hair and tilting his head back. "When Mr. Fortune is through with you. It's my turn." The dirty cop chortled. "And you won't be the smart-ass you are right now. I guarantee it!"
Jimmy found an inside path for his right hand under Frank's armpit and to his throat. With his fingers locked straight he struck the officer's windpipe just hard enough to back the cop off. "Fucking A-hole!"
Jimmy stood on his left foot and waited for Frank to make his next move. Anything but your gun and you're mine. But as quickly as he thought those words, the cop pulled his sidearm.
"Sit your ass back down!" Frank yelled, out of fear, Jimmy felt. "If Mr. Fortune didn't want to see you, I'd blow your brains out right here!"
Jimmy's intense stare focused on Frank as he sat. "Okay."
The cop went to hit him but Jimmy deflected the weak left hand. Frank cocked his pistol. "Fuck you!"
Jimmy continued his intense stare. "You do not get a free shot at me." He shifted his body on the wheelchair. "Take me to see your boss. Let's get it over with."
Fuck me, did I just say 'take me to your boss?' Are you stupid? Better take some time and get a fucking plan together you thick headed idiot!
"That's better!" Frank holstered his sidearm. "Press the ground floor." He leaned down to whisper into Jimmy's ear. "You better come quietly."
Jimmy scoffed. "You blew your cover. You have to kill me because I am not about to let this slide, Jacobs. Remember that."
"You have it all figured out."
"No, but I am thinking your boss will fill me in." Jimmy rubbed his facial hair. "Then you can get your one chance to take me out."
"One is all I'll need." Frank met Jimmy's statement with his own confidence.
The elevator doors opened. Frank wasted little time wheeling Jimmy out the emergency department exit and to his patrol car. "Get up!"
Jimmy stood and Frank rifled the wheelchair back at the automatic doors. "Sit! Give me your hands!" The injured man offered up his hands to be handcuffed.
Windy made her way to the emergency department where the sound of the automatic doors caught her attention. She frowned at the sight of the vacated wheelchair. She scanned the dark parking lot noticing the police car but that wasn't out of the ordinary.
She walked back inside with the wheelchair and set off in search of Jimmy. Windy stopped at the intake desk. "Hi, I am looking for a James Carrick."
"Are you a family member?" The intake clerk looked at the black woman in front of her with doubt.
"He's my boyfriend." Windy suggested after telling Jimmy that would never happen again.
"Your name, ma'am?"
"Windy South." She showed her driver's license to the woman.
"Yes, you are his contact." She checked her computer screen again then looked back to Windy. "He was released by the doctor."
"He hasn't contacted me. Do you think it's possible to see the doctor who helped James?" Windy winced as she inquired. "It is strange he wouldn't call."
"We don't usually allow this but I will ask the doctor." As the woman called the emergency desk Windy happened to look down at the wheelchair she gathered from the door. "Blood?"
There was blood on the right foot rest. Windy crouched down, took a facial tissue from her pocket and carefully wiped at the blood. It was still wet. "Jimmy?!" She spoke to herself.
The large double emergency doors opened and Dr. Barnes walked through. "Miss South?"
Windy stood. "Yes!"
"I'm Dr. Barnes." He frowned. "I was under the impression Mr. Carrick was married."
"He has a daughter but he is not married." Windy shrugged. "I just have a question, Doctor." She pointed at the wheelchair. "Do you remember if my boyfriend used this particular wheelchair?"
Dr. Barnes looked it over. "It could be the one. It's difficult to say."
"There is blood on this foot rest." Windy crouched again.
"That's strange." Dr. Barnes frowned. "The woman took Mr. Carrick up to the seventh floor to see his daughter."
"Thanks!" Windy ran towards the elevators.
When she arrived at the seventh floor she found Dana speaking with Brad. "Dana! Where's Jimmy?"
"He was right here." Dana shrugged. "Maybe he went to the cafeteria. It's almost time for it to open."
"Was he in a wheelchair?"
"Yeah, of course!" Dana looked surprised at the question. "He can't walk."
"I found a wheelchair with blood on the right foot rest at the emergency entrance!" Windy nervously pulled at her ample big hair that Jimmy seemed to like. "I think something's happened to him."
"But he needs to be here!" Dana began to panic. "The operation is set for Friday!" She grabbed onto Windy's arm. "Find him! Get him back here!"
Brad pulled his wife from her friend. "Anything I can do to help? By the way, I'm Brad."
"Windy."
"Anything I can do to help get Jimmy back here?" Brad asked again.
"I need a computer or a laptop right now." Windy looked to Brad. "Can you distract the nurses? I need to get a look at the security cameras."
"You can do that?"
Windy winced. "Ah maybe."
"Then yeah, I can buy you some time!" Brad released Dana. "Anything to save Jordan."
"Well, it's go time, Brad." Windy raised her eyebrows.
Brad took the hint and quickly closed in on the nurse at her desk. Windy watched Brad lead her to Jordan's room.
"Good luck, Windy." Dana squeezed Windy's arm.
Windy quickly made her way into the hospital's secured system. She really was an unabashed computer genius that has yet to be foiled by any security software.
Windy gained access to the security cameras in mere moments. She found the emergency department cameras and rewound the recording roughly twenty minutes. "Come on, come on."
"Windy!" Dana whispered. They are coming back!"
Windy waved her off. "Slow 'em down!" Then continued clicking the thirty second advance until she had Jimmy in her sight. "Now who's with you?"
"Windy!"
She stopped advancing the recording and let it play. Then he appeared. "Jacobs! I might have known!" She closed the window and slipped out of the far side of the nurse's station.
Dana was about to warn Windy again but she couldn't find her. She leaned over the ledge and whispered again. "Windy?"
Windy quickly made her way around the hallway making it look as though she just arrived. She called out from behind Brad and the nurse. "Hey Dana!"
Dana gave a look of relief. "Oh hey, Windy!"
Brad smiled before filling Windy in. "Hey Windy, Jordan's sleeping again but she looks good!"
"Oh ~ that's great!" Windy played along until the nurse retreated to her desk.
Windy walked them away from the nurse's station. "I will need your help, Brad."
Brad looked at Dana who gave her husband a favorable nod. "Yeah, like I said, anything for Jordan."
Dana again grabbed onto her friend. "Bring him back, Windy!"
Windy took a deep breath. "We'll do what we can, Dana."
"No no no no no. You have to bring him back!" Dana's eyes began to fill with tears turning hope into dread.
With Brad and Windy gone she climbed into bed with Jordan holding her close humming to her only child.
In the elevator Windy turned to Brad. "Did you drive here?"
"Yeah, I have a car." Brad nodded.
"With Google Maps?"
"Yeah yeah. It has that."
"Good. Just sit in your car until I find out where that dirty cop took Jimmy." Windy left Brad and ran to her car.
Windy sat in her car and quickly came up with an idea. She turned on her police intercept radio then called Jacobs' precinct.
"Precinct Four, Officer Kilterage."
Windy began. "Good morning, Officer Jacobs has just left VGH and forgot the paperwork of his injured suspect."
"Ah one moment please." Kilterage muted the call and called out to her shift leader, Officer Santos. "Sir, did you know Jacobs was at VGH this morning?"
"VGH?" He checked his watch. "He was supposed to be back at his desk an hour ago." Santos frowned. "Find out where he is and tell him to get his ass back here ~ now!" He shook his head. "He is this frickin close to losing his badge."
Kilterage got back to Windy. "Hello ma'am. I will let Officer Jacobs know to pick up the paperwork."
"Thank you, have a great day!" Windy spoke with an upbeat voice.
"You as well, ma'am."
Windy turned up her intercept radio and listened in on Kilterage and Jacobs.
"Car forty-two-twenty, this is base."
"Kilterage, what is it now?"
"Forty-two-twenty, Shift leader Santos wants to know where you are."
"Wh...well I am at Second Beach."
"Forty-two-twenty, you are out of your jurisdiction. Explain."
"Just following up on a suspect." Jacobs spoke with contempt.
"Forty-two-twenty, radio local precinct and return to base. Over." Kilterage shook her head and made her way to Santos.
Santos didn't even look up. "So, where is Jacobs?"
"Second Beach, Sir."
That response slapped Santos to attention. "Second Beach?!" The shift leader roared. "Did you call him back?"
"Yes, I did, Sir."
"He's going to wish he chose a different precinct." Santos looked out his window. "Oh Kilterage?"
"Sir?"
"I am reviewing the seventy-six missing women's cases. Get in touch with that Mr. Carrick today. I want to pick his brain again."
"Yes, Sir." Kilterage waited.
"That is all, Kilterage."
Windy to the Rescue
Windy phoned Brad. "Meet me at Second Beach. It's only about a ten minute drive. Call me when you get there."
"Got it!" Brad typed Second Beach into his SUVs Google maps before setting off.
Windy wasted no time firing up her classic Cutlass Supreme. "Let's go get Jimmy, Breezy."
