12 - Jordan

"Jump in!" Jimmy pointed to his Challenger.

"Nice ride."

"It's called no retirement plan."

Adia laughed. "But worth it, I am sure."

"I figure when it's time to retire I'll sell it. Until then I will enjoy my time with it." Jimmy shrugged knowing it was not the smartest decision he has made.

"Usually parents make better plans."

"I didn't know I was a father until a few days ago." Jimmy shrugged as he fired up the classic sports car.

"Can I ask those questions now?" Adia looked to Jimmy for approval.

"I don't see why not." Jimmy turned left onto Robson Street.

"Forward, I know, but why are you and Windy not a thing?"

"For real?"

"Yeah, I have seen the two of you in the cafe and it's like you two were made for each other. It's funny, in a way, the way she ignores you while she's on her phone."

"Not that funny. Trust me." Jimmy looked at his passenger. "Next question."

"So, choosing to avoid the question?"

"What are you? A prosecutor?"

"I am studying criminal justice."

"Hmmm, makes sense." Jimmy scoffed.

"What makes sense?" Adia seemed surprised.

"Just the way you are questioning me."

"I have a curious mind."

"Yes you do!" Jimmy smiled.

Adia noticed his smile. "What? What was that smile for?"

"I think you could help me."

"Funny."

"Why funny?"

"I was about to ask you for help." Adia allowed a nervous laugh to escape.

"How could I help you?" Jimmy looked at her then back to the traffic.

"You've lived in the city a long time." Adia gestured with her hands. "You know people." She took a deep breath. "I know this is crazy, but I've read your investigative reporting column."

"Which ones?" Jimmy rolled his eyes.

"All of them."

Jimmy looked at her for an extended period of time until a horn sounded. He focused on his driving again. "Why would anyone read all of my columns?"

"Whether you realize it or not, you are a criminal behavior specialist."

He shook his head and laughed.

"Don't laugh." Adia folded her arms in front of her. "Seriously, don't laugh!"

"Okay. I'm sorry." Jimmy raised his hand to signal compliance. "This is leading to a bigger question. I can just feel it."

"You are right." Adia paused. "I thought you could help me solve the indigenous women disappearances."

"Me?!" I never expected that. Maybe she wanted to talk about some of the crooks in the city but that? "You believe I can help you with their disappearances?"

"Well, yeah?" Adia did not appear as confident after listening to Jimmy's response.

"Someone close to you is missing, am I right?"

"My aunt disappeared twelve years ago." She continued. "My sister, five years ago."

"Oh." Jimmy softened his tone. "I am sorry, Adia." But he had an idea. "I will help you if you help me."

"Exactly how can I help you?" Adia looked at Jimmy.

"I need you to check out a couple of guys who, in the past, have been linked to prostitution in the city." Jimmy didn't hear any protests so he continued. "Do we have a deal?"

Adia wasted no time giving her answer. "Okay, who am I checking out?"

"Ever hear of the Fortune family?"

"Yeah, who hasn't?"

"Joey and Johnny are in the same hospital as my daughter." Jimmy didn't waste time and continued on to his need for knowledge. "I need to know if they regained consciousness...if they can talk."

Adia turned to Jimmy offering a frown. "You have something to do with their present state?"

Smart girl. "Joey has been hunting me since he was released from the pen a few months back."

"And he didn't find you?" She appeared surprised.

"Let's just say we found each other."

"I read about the brothers. They..." Jimmy interrupted Adia.

"They survived."

"Okay." Adia continued to accept her part of the bargain. "But you owe me."

"Catching the person or persons involved in the disappearances will not be easy." Jimmy brought her back to reality.

"Who said anything about catching?" Adia corrected Jimmy. "I just need help finding them. I have a group that will catch them and deliver justice."

I know that feeling. Not sure if that is the best path to take. "Okay, I will help you find them. You do what you need to do."

"Then I will find out everything I can. You just spend time with your daughter."

"I would to hate to be the ones we find!"

"Yeah, it won't be pretty." Adia stared straight ahead.

Vancouver General Hospital

Jimmy and Adia arrived at VGH and he called Windy to see if she found his cellphone at Jerricho beach.

"Hey Jimmy."

"Win, did you find it?"

"Not exactly."

"What exactly then, Win?"

"I checked out Officer Jacobs."

"And?" Jimmy wanted Windy to confirm his suspicions.

"And I think he has it in for you since he was demoted for losing some key evidence on Joey." Windy wasn't finished. "Be careful, Jimmy. He has connections and has motive."

"I will, Win. Okay, I am about to spend some time with Jordan." Jimmy needed Windy's help for another night. "So Win, can I crash on your couch again tonight?"

"Jimmy..." Windy offered a solution. "Visit with Jordan and we'll talk later. Gotta go. Say hi to Dana and Jordan for me!"

Jimmy looked at the payphone receiver then up to Adia. "That went well." He rolled his eyes.

"Wow, are you sure you two aren't married?"

"Enough with the married to Windy thing." Jimmy pointed to the overhead sign for the different departments. "ICU is on the third floor. I'll be up on the seventh floor if you need to find me."

"If I don't find out anything?"

"You will." Jimmy pointed to the clock on the wall. "We have until eight o'clock."

Jimmy took one elevator to the seventh floor and Adia took the stairs to the third floor.

Jordan

Jimmy stepped off the elevator and headed to the nurse's station. A nurse looked up from the computer screen. "Mr. Carrick! We have been trying to reach you all day!"

"What is it? How is Jordan?!" Jimmy felt guilty for getting there so late.

"We transferred her to the ICU. She had a reaction to the blood transfusion." She took a breath and reassured the man in front of her. "She's stable. Jordan is doing fine."

"Can I see her?" Jimmy felt weak and had to use the counter to steady himself.

"Are you okay Mr. Carrick?"

"Yeah. Yeah, I am good." He looked up to a concerned nurse. "Can she have visitors?"

"I will call down and see." The nurse sat and called the ICU.

"Ah, Mr. Carrick!"

"Dr. Liu!" Jimmy approached the head of the transplant department. "How is Jordan?"

The nurse stood to speak to the father but Dr. Liu smiled and held his hand up. "I will take it from here, Julia. "Jordan is weak but she is recovering."

"Recovering from what? I thought she was getting a blood transfusion!"

"She has received the transfusion."

"And?!" Jimmy wanted more information.

"And it seems the last pint that was being administered was the wrong blood type." Dr. Liu walked Jimmy to the elevator. "Thankfully we caught it early and stopped the transfusion."

"Will she be okay?"

"She is recovering and will be okay."

"And the surgery scheduled for next week?"

"If Jordan improves over the next twenty-four hours I want to move the transplant up to Friday."

"Is that a good idea?"

"It's what I recommend." Dr. Liu went on. "Her kidneys received more damage from the transfusion mishap. The sooner the better for Jordan's other organs."

Jimmy ran his fingers through his hair. Stared into the abyss as he thought of Jordan suffering. When his attention returned to Dr. Liu he nodded and firmly agreed. "Then it's Friday."

"We will need to do a final test of your blood with Jordan's, just to make certain your kidney will not be rejected."

"Anytime, Doctor. My schedule has been cleared." Jimmy looked Dr. Liu in the eyes. "She's my only child."

"I understand, Mr. Carrick."

"Jimmy, please."

"Okay ~ Jimmy." Dr. Liu patted him on his shoulder and pressed the call button for the elevator. "I think Mrs. Kerron is sitting with Jordan now."

"When it rains ~ it pours. I am not looking forward to seeing her today."

"Mister...I mean Jimmy, she is only looking out for her daughter ~ your daughter." The doctor smiled. "Cut her a little slack?" The elevator arrived and the two men parted ways.

Windy

Windy got back into her car. "I have this funny Feeling Jimmy is heading into more trouble."

She quickly zig zagged though the city streets making it to Vancouver General Hospital just after six o'clock. As she entered the hospital Windy received a text from Dana.

Jordan has been moved to the ICU.

"That's where the Fortune brothers are! If they see Jimmy there, he's dead, Jordan is likely dead just for being his daughter." Windy rushed from the parking lot to help in any way she could.

Adia

Adia watched the nurses head into the ICU rooms to check on the patients. She quickly headed into the nurse's station to check for any information on the Fortune brothers.

A quick check of the files in a stack on what appeared to be the head nurse's desk proved to be old files of discharged patients. All the computer terminals were locked out and she had no way of getting in. That was until Windy showed up unexpectedly.

"Adia! What are you doing back there?"

Adia jerked away from the computer screen. "Windy? Trying to see if the Fortune brothers are conscious and anything else that would help Jimmy."

"Jimmy put you up to this?" Windy shook her head. "Of course he did."

"I haven't found anything." Adia looked discouraged.

"Just come out from there." Windy waved the criminal justice student out of the nurse's station and just in time.

Dana walked out of the ICU ward. "Windy?"

"Dana! How is Jordan?" Windy walked towards Dana as Adia scrambled out of the nurse's work station.

"She's...she's doing better." Dana had a disillusioned looked on her face. "Where's Jimmy?"

"He should be in the hospital. We spoke just ten minutes ago." Windy tried to cover for her friend.

"He went to the seventh floor." Adia spoke up. "Hi, I'm Adia."

"Dana, this is my friend, Adia." Windy did not expand on that statement.

"Ah, hello." Dana also didn't ask for more.

"Hey." Adia gave a small wave. "Windy, I am going to head out now. See you around!"

"Yeah, I'll drop by the cafe tomorrow." Windy smiled then turned her attention back to Dana.

The head nurse and the night shift nurse returned from their rounds to the two women standing next to the nurse's station.

"Oh, Mrs. Kerron, could I get you to sign a few release forms." The night shift nurse motioned to Dana.

"I could use a coffee. I will be in the cafeteria, Dana." Windy embraced Dana before heading down the stairs to the cafeteria.

Jimmy stepped out and stopped to talk with the head nurse. "I am Mr. Carrick, Dr. Liu directed me down from the seventh floor. Can I visit my daughter, Jordan Kerron?"

The head nurse walked Jimmy to the ICU door and pointed to the curtained area where Jordan's bed was located.
