10 - PRECINCT NINE
"Gennery, where is John Doe?! How does a man who is handcuffed to a bed escape?" Captain Chambered slammed his hand onto the desk.
"Let's ask the two that were found in his room."
"I personally want to see them in the interview room, Gennery?" The captain pressured his detective. "Now!"
"Right...I'll get them!"
"Find out why your officer left his post? I'll get some answers from the two idiots, Gennery. You get that John Doe back in custody or you will be back on the beat. Now get the hell out of here!" Captain Chambered pointed to the door.
Gennery walked down the hall mumbling to himself trying to make sense of what took place at the hospital. He got to his desk to see the report from the hospital officer. "Yeah, what is your official story, Jeffries?"
He read the report and scratched his head. "You really want me to believe you just left for a piss and these two idiots came by to do say hello to John Doe? Fuck, you must think I am stupid."
"Hallahan." Gennery yelled at the officer on desk duty. "Get the two idiots from Downtown General into the interview room, the captain wants to question them himself."
Gennery shook his head as he exited Precinct Nine. "What the hell really happened in that room? Fuck Jeffries, what are you hiding?" The detective drove to Jeffries's home.
Gennery knocked loudly on Jeffries's door. He answered it quickly. "Detective? Why are you here?"
"What the fuck happened to you?" Gennery frowned.
"That John Doe busted my nose and knocked me out."
"You didn't put that in the report."
"Yeah well, I forgot!"
Red flags were springing up in Gennery's head. "There were a few things I wanted to ask you about this morning."
"Look I took a piss and I guess the two guys went in to see the guy." The officer looked annoyed.
"Was John Doe handcuffed to the bed?"
"I took him to the washroom and I left to take a piss."
"Then?" Gennery tried to get the details from Jeffries.
"Then what? I was knocked out by that crazy fucker."
"Next time make a full report. Or you will be on desk duty."
"Fuck me!" Jeffries punch the wall.
"Yeah, you don't have the Captain breathing down your neck for answers." The detective stared at the officer. "And another thing. Why wasn't I called when this went down? Why Detective Reston?"
"I called it in and they sent Reston."
"Okay, get better and I'll see you at the Nine on Monday."
"See ya, Detective."
Gennery had even more questions after his time with Jeffries and began to talk it out. "This doesn't add up. I have no idea where the hell John Doe is. Why were those two in his room? Someone has to know something. Shit."
Gennery sat in his car and continued his one-way conversation. "Where would a guy who didn't know who the hell he was go? No one in the city to help him." He grinned. "Another hospital!" He started his car.
Precinct Nine
Killer and Billy were delivered to the interview room and were handcuffed to their chairs. Captain Chambered waited quite sometime before entering.
The Captain entered and the two looked relieved to see him. "Brainless Billy and Killer. You two idiots could not even take care of one guy who didn't even know who the fuck he was. Now the mayor and the Governor are on my ass."
"He may not know who he is but he is not stupid." Billy spoke quickly.
"Compared to you two fucking geniuses he may actually appear to be smart. You had two chances to eliminate this guy. Maybe I should let the two of you take the fall for all the missing women!"
"Come on Captain, we can get this guy. If he is on the streets Billy and I will find him."
"When you do...eliminate him. We're building a case against John Doe."
"How?"
"Don't you worry your pretty little head about what I do. Just take care of John Doe!"
"When do we get out of here?" Killer looked at the Captain.
"One hour and text me when you find that fucker."
"You've got it, Captain!"
Captain Chambered left the room and made his way to Officer Hallahan's desk. "Release those two idiots in the interview room. They're free to go."
Detective Gennery
Gennery checked his watch. "No wonder I'm hungry, it eleven." He pulled into a drive-thru, ordered an early lunch then parked in the parking lot. He called hospital after hospital in hopes of finding John Doe.
"Yeah, the is detective Gennery of Precinct Nine, I need to know if you have a man with a head injury that came in the last twenty-four hours. He may not know who he is."
He completed his phone calls and circled two hospitals, Saint Vincent's and the Princess Margaret Hospital as possibilities for his John Doe. He looked up at the street sign. "I guess it's Princess District first."
Gennery spent forty-five minutes questioning the emergency room nurses and doctors only to find out the man was elderly. He suppressed his disappointment with the staff but knew the mistake could cost him a shot at John Doe. The detective quickly made his way back to his car.
"You better be at Saint Vincent's, John Doe. Otherwise, my ass is back on the beat." Gennery slammed his hand on his steering wheel. "This is one screwed-up case. Fucking Jeffries and those two idiots from the hospital just don't make any sense. John Doe, you better be there!"
SAINT VINCENT'S
"Here comes the sun...da da dee dum. Here comes the sun, and I say..."
Windy joined Jimmy singing. "It's all right..."
Dr. Moore and Kline stood back and allowed Windy a little space and time. It certainly appeared they were uniquely connected.
"Windy." Jimmy smiled. "You're here."
Once the doctors heard those words they left the ICU. Windy looked over her shoulder to make sure they really did leave the room. "Jimmy, how are you feeling? Can you walk?"
"Win. Win...you love me. I mean, you still love me. Don't you?"
"This is not the time or the place to talk about love. We need to get you out of here as fast as we can."
"Why, Win? I am finally getting a good night's sleep and you want me to get up and leave."
"Jimmy, focus. They want to pin the murder of a prostitute on you."
"Ya?"
"And about sixty missing women too!"
"Me? Win, I am not a...a...what are they calling me?"
"The Crescent City Creeper."
"Yeah right. Me? Even I know I'm not a creep."
"The mayor and the Governor seem to believe you are. And that is why you need to get out of here. Now!"
"Okay, get me the hell out of here!" As Jimmy stood his blood pressure dropped so quickly he blacked out.
"Oh shit!" Windy caught Jimmy and struggled to get him back into the bed. Once she covered her friend she left the ICU.
"Miss South. Over here please."
"Windy, Dr. Moore says Jimmy needs time for his brain to repair or he may never get his long term memory back."
"How long?"
"At least a week before he can travel."
Fear could be seen in Windy's expression. "What is it, Miss South?"
"It's the severity of his injury. I never knew it was that bad. I just wasn't prepared for that news."
Dr. Moore placed her hand on Windy. "I believe he will make a full recovery. He just needs time."
Gennery parked his car and ran into the emergency room, approached the intake desk, and showed his badge. "I phoned earlier. Is there a Dr. Kline here? I spoke with her about an hour ago."
Doctor Kline answered her cellphone. "Dr. Kline, a detective Gennery is here to meet with you...okay, I will tell him." The receptionist hung up the phone and turned to the detective. "Just have a seat, she'll be right out."
"Thanks." Gennery sat.
Dr. Kline walked through the secured door. "Detective..."
"Gennery, ma'am. I hate to seem...well, pushy but I fear I am running out of time."
"You were searching for a John Doe, am I right?"
"Yes, ma'am, a man who was struck in the back of his head. He lost his memory and is alone in the city."
"Well, we do have a man that matches your description detective."
"Okay, take me to him."
"This man has a name and friends. He is not alone as you suggest."
"Really? Well, I should check him out just in case our information about him was wrong. What is his name?"
"His name is James Dunn."
Gennery scribbled Jimmy's name down. "You said he has friends?"
"Yes, his girlfriend and a friend from the city."
"That really doesn't match my John Doe but I would like to see him if it's only to check him off my list."
Dr. Kline agreed. "I see no harm in it. Let's go up to the ICU."
GENNERY AND JIMMY
Dr. Kline and Gennery arrive on the third floor. Alex recognized the detective and pulled Windy out of sight. "That cop is from the Precinct Nine!"
"Do you think he knows Jimmy?"
"There's a good chance he does." Alex confirmed.
"Come on Windy, think! Think think think!" Windy pressured herself.
"I can at least run a little interference." Alex moved to intercept Gennery. "I know this guy."
"How?"
"Well, I can't say I have never been caught." He pointed at Windy. "You stay out of sight. Let's not show all our cards just yet."
Alex returned to the hallway. "Detective Gennery. What brings you to Saint Vincent's?"
"I could ask you the same question, Mr. Beaufort."
"You two know each other?" Dr. Kline pointed to each man.
"Unfortunately...yes." Alex stood between the detective and his new friend.
"Mr. Beaufort, what brings you here?"
"Just visiting a friend...you?"
Gennery had no time for Alex. "Doctor, can you show me your patient?" He looked at the pick pocket then headed towards the ICU.
Dr. Moore made her way from the nurse's station. "I am Dr. Moore. Mr. Dunn is recovering from a deep bruise to his brain. He needs his rest."
"Well, I really don't have any questions for him. Just look at his face."
Dr. Moore nodded and led the way. "Okay then, this way."
The three entered the ICU while Alex returned to get Windy.
"Windy. I think he is here for Jimmy."
"Well, he won't be getting Jimmy."
"What can you do?
"I don't know, Alex."
Inside the ICU Gennery approached the bed. "John Doe?"
"Jimmy Dunn." Dr. Kline reminded Gennery.
"Jimmy Dunn, hey? Remember me?" Gennery spoke with that tone cops use.
"You said no questions!" Dr. Moore stepped in.
"Doctor!" Gennery tried to reassure Dr. Moore he wouldn't disturb the patient. "Just want to see his face. Okay?"
Jimmy looked up at the detective. "Gennery..."
"So, you do have a name." Gennery handcuffed Jimmy to the bed. "We have been looking for you."
"Really? Why was I attacked at the other hospital?"
"They were petty thieves." Gennery dismissed Billy and Killer from bigger liability.
"Petty thieves? Brainless Billy and Killer are petty thieves? They are the two that did this to me!" Jimmy pointed to his head. "And took my girlfriend!"
Dr. Moore and Kline were confused about Windy again.
"They were the two that took your girlfriend?" Gennery frowned.
"Did I stutter? Geesus am I the detective or are you?" Jimmy covered his eyes. "Fuck me!"
"Okay, that is enough. Mr. Dunn must rest. He is secured. Let's give him some time, Detective Gennery."
"I will be right outside." Gennery turned to Dr. Kline. "You said he had a friend?"
"Yeah, Mr. Beaufort."
"Great. The pain in the ass!" Gennery shook his head.
Dr. Kline approached Alex. "Mr. Beaufort the detective would like a word with you."
"What could you possibly want with me?" Alex looked at the detective.
"How do you know Mr. Dunn?"
"He's a friend."
"Yeah, where's he from?"
"Minnesota."
"Why does he not show up on any police system?"
"He's never been in trouble. He's a good guy."
"Good guy, eh?" Gennery laughed.
"Yeah, a good guy!"
"How does a 'good guy' kick the crap out of two guys while handcuffed?" Gennery wasn't buying Alex's good guy theory.
"How would I know?" Alex shrugged.
"You still live above that bakery?"
"Yeah, why?"
"Don't leave town."
"Very funny. What did I do?"
Gennery pointed at Alex. "Aided and abetted a fugitive."
Alex laughed. "Yeah right a fugitive. He just arrived here a few days ago. How the hell would I know he was wanted for anything!"
"The news." Gennery shot back.
"The news? Where's the photo of Jimmy? Where?" Alex had a good point.
Dr. Kline stepped in. "You two need to bring it down a notch or two!"
Alex calmed his emotions before asking. "What is Jimmy wanted for?"
"He is a suspect in a prostitute's death and wanted in connection with the disappearance of sixty women."
"Bullshit. That would never stick. This is his first visit to the city." Alex injected the conversation with a useful fact.
"Can you prove that?" Gennery eyes focused on Alex.
"He can't, but I can." Windy stepped into the open.
"Who the hell are you?" Gennery looked at Windy with disbelief.
