A Broken Promise
I follow Jason through the woods, my hands on my guns. Usually, I have knives but there's a body in these woods. This is my first mission since I told Rose and Neil the truth about what I am. There's a loud curse behind us and I turn, guns raised to see Levi barely catch his shotgun.
"Levi, we kinda need to be stealthy," I hiss and he does a mocking bow. I roll my eyes and continue after Jason who stops short of a clearing, colour draining from his face. "Jase, you okay?" He steps aside and I look into the clearing. "Oh." There's more than one body. Women and infants appear to be tossed across the clearing...As if they're nothing.
"There's only supposed to be one," Levi says beside me, his voice faint and my legs give out. He catches me and my heart thumps in my chest as he helps me up right. "This is...A lot." Understatement of the year. I stand up straight, away from him and walk into the clearing after Jason. I look around at the bodies and kneel down beside one of the infants. On instinct, I lift up their eyelid and see gold eye with a blue ring around the pupil that stirs up a memory of someone I try not to think about, Your mother told me that your eyes were purple with a blue ring around the pupil, it was the same for the others, including me. I look up and swallow.
"These babies were experimented on like me...Someone is trying to make more like me." Jason crouches beside me and frowns at the gold eye.
"Who would do this? Why would they do this?"
"Because with the right training, we're unstoppable. I have no idea who would do this unless...?" I look up at Levi who finishes my sentence.
"Unless Percival Bloodrun is still alive," I let the eyelid fall and feel someone put their arms around me. I put my hand on his arm and smile at Jason as Levi makes a call. "Aunt Rose? The tip was too true...There's more than one body...It looks like they're trying to make more of Sloane...There's a chance that it's Percival Bloodrun. Can we get a lot of back up?" I stand up and leave the clearing, feeling the weight of the world on my shoulders, threatening to crush me with the possibility of Percival Bloodrun and more people like me.
"I can't believe this," I whisper and rest my head against a tree. Snap. I look up, raising my gun. A girl with a golden tan stands there, frowning at me with orange eyes, something about her seems familiar. "Who are you?" I demand, gun steady and she raises her hands.
"Please, I'm like you. My name is-" Levi and Jason burst through the trees and the girl runs.
"Sh-WAIT!" I yell, running after her and the boys curse before following me. Soon, I lose her trail and pant, looking around. I turn and glare at the boys. "She said she was like me. She might've known what happened. You two had to follow me." Levi steps forward, clearly pissed.
"We were worried about you! You just saw that someone is trying to do what was done to you! I think us following you was the right call!" He yells and I blink, Levi never yells. Jason steps between us.
"Okaaay. We have to get back to the clearing before everyone gets there," He seems as confused as I am about the yelling. Levi nods and I hurry ahead of them, putting my gun away. "Levi, why did you yell? You never yell." I pretend to not hear them as Levi says something that makes me want to turn around.
"I don't know...It might be that thing we talked about before...About Sloane."

When we get back to the clearing, it's crawling with people who live in Dark Pass, the unofficial name of the secret building we live in. I can see Hella and Ryker's red hair bobbing towards us. Hella wraps me in a hug while Ryker stands very close to Jason...Huh.
"We were worried something happened!" Hella says before punching me in the arm, making me give her my full attention. I rub my arm.
"There was someone like me here," She gasps and I continue, feeling Levi glance at me. "She got spooked by Levi and Jason so we chased her. We easily lost her since she's exactly like me." Rose appears, her clothes a dark red that seems a little inappropriate for the situation.
"Do you think she did this?" She asks, even though it sounds more like a demand and I shrug as a man walk past with the baby I had checked. "We need to find who did this." I swallow, knowing this would be bad news.
"Whoever it is...They haven't figured out how to do this right," I whisper but I know everyone can hear exactly what I'm saying. "It's not Bloodrun. These women aren't hunters, he figured out that hunter women could handle the blood. There was four of us with the blood...And I'm one of two who knows that it needs to be hunters." Everyone frowns at me and Levi crosses his arms.
"S...How do you know this?"
"I promised I wouldn't tell anyone. I already broke that promise by saying thank you..." I cover my mouth as Rose points at me.
"The man. The man is the other one who knows!" I sit down in the only part of the clearing without a body or blood on it. "Sloane, why did the man pretend he didn't know who or what you were?" I look up at her, feeling the guilt on my chest, making it hard to breathe.
"Isn't it obvious?" Levi says, standing protectively in front of me. "So, you wouldn't have any reason to question him or hold him," I nod and Rose stalks away. My heart hammers in my chest as Levi sits beside me and puts an arm around me. "We need to find this man. If he's the only other person who knows how to do this, we have to protect him." I look at him and give out the last bit of the truth, the last part of the promise to break.
"The man is a woman. She has shape-shifting abilities. She turns into a man to hide and protect herself," I explain, looking at my mud stained boots. "She's going to hate me for this." Jason kneels down and smiles at me.
"You're trying to protect her, she'll get over it," He takes my hand gently and rubs it. "Where is she? Do you know where she is?" I swallow painfully.
"She moves every week...Or at least she did five years ago," I rub my forehead and sigh. "She gave me a phone number. She said that if I ever need her, I can call that number and someone will tell someone who will tell her that I called. This person will be given her address and the first person will call back with the address and a time to go to the address. There would be a party to cover up the fact that we're meeting...To make sure you don't find her." Levi watches me for a long time.
"Remember, we're protecting her," He murmurs close to my ear. "If whoever is doing-" I stand up, getting away from both of them and walk towards the nearest tree.
"I know! I get that this is important and she'll get over it eventually!" I yell, ignoring everyone else in the clearing looking at me. "Every time one of you says something, I think that you're using me even though I know that you aren't! I'm going to the car if anyone wants to talk about something else." I storm off, knowing that someone will eventually come after me...Hoping that someone will eventually come after me.

I reach Levi's car and get in, he never locks it. I lie down on the back seats and look through the windshield at the darkening sky. I feel a pressure behind my eyes and close my eyes, preparing myself for the vision. I run on a beach, towards a tall, familiar man, his dark curling hair longer than I've ever seen it. "LEVI!" I scream and he turns, his arms out automatically. He catches me and lifts me up, spinning, my arms around his neck. "Sloane," He whispers simply and he sets me down, not letting me go. "Sloane..." He repeats before pressing a kiss to my lips, strange in its familiarity. He pulls away and I hold his face. "Never leave me again." He grins. "I promise." I kiss him fiercely- I open my eyes, blinking to find Levi's jacket over me and him driving down a familiar street, towards Dark Pass. I touch my fingers to my lips, half expecting to feel Levi's lips there. I watch him absently tapping his fingers against the steering wheel...He has nice hands. I blink, nice hands, really? There's a guy with really nice eyes that change colour, that's possibly the most handsome guy I've met that doesn't look completely perfect with his crooked smile and long nose, not to mention the best personality ever and think that he has nice hands...Oh. My. Fucking. God. I sit up and smile at the back of his head, faking normalcy.
"Hey Levi."
"Hey S, I thought that I should bring you home since you fell asleep."
"I wasn't exactly asleep-"
"You heard me singing along to High School Musical?" He interrupts and I give him a mischevious grin.
"No but I can say that now," I croon and he sighs before I continue. "I was having a vision...It was about..." I trail off, watching him blow a piece of hair out of his face and swallow. "It's not actually important. Hopefully the next one can help with this," He turns left and I automatically smile at Dark Pass looming above us. It looked like an abandoned school building but it had rooms for fifty-six hunters, not counting our broken little family. My smile fades at the thought of calling her after all these years...To tell her I broke my promise...To tell her that one of the others was trying to make more of us. I don't realise that Levi's beside me until he wraps his arms as I start to cry. "I don't know why I'm crying." He kisses my hair, making me feel safe and strange.
"Don't worry, I do," I bury my face into his shoulder and he smooths my hair. "I know we keep saying this but she'll get why you did it...Do you want to cry in my car some more or cry in your room or just sit in your room without crying?" I pull out of the hug and give him a wobbly smirk.
"I'm going to sit in my room and text everyone about the High School Musical thing before making the call."
"Do. Not. Tell. Anyone. About. It," He announcates and I shrug before He wiggles his fingers at me. "I'll tickle you until you promise not to." I roll my eyes before he tackles me and tickles me. I laugh, trying to push him off.
"Stop!" I rest my hands on his shoulders and try to push him away. "Fine, fine-I promise!" He stops, resting above me on his elbows and the sudden heat makes both of our grins fade. I become very aware of him between my legs and he seems to scan me with pink with red before swallowing.
"Thanks for the promise," He says, his voice husky and I nod as he gets off me. "As much as I hate to say it but...I think it's time to make the call." I swallow and nod, clampering out of the car, hoping that it's too dark for him to see me blush.
"You're right. I better get upstairs," I look at him, noting the flush on his cheeks. "I'll tell you after." I hand over his jacket and walk inside quickly, trying to make it subtle enough. I don't think it worked. At least he hopefully doesn't know that I apparently have feelings for him.

Two flights of creaky stairs later, I push open my bedroom door, looking at the dragon, thinking of another door with a dragon on it...That leads to a now empty apartment with fague memories filling every corner. I blink, bringing myself to the present and walk towards my bookshelves. Each shelf is bursting with books and sketchpad except the very bottom one. I kneel down and look at the only things I brought with me before reaching out for Sly. Sly is a worn fox with a missing ear, mismatched eyes and a chewed tail. With a sigh, I reach into the hole where the ear should be and pull out a piece of paper while fumbling my phone out of my pocket. I dial the number and after a few seconds of hesitation, I press call.
