Cliff Cope
Step by step I climb
up the mountain slope
Over mountain cliff
hang my feet and cope
Sit there through the day
let my thoughts take flight
Paper, pen at knee
fingers seldom write
As the daylight wanes
nighttime steals clear sight
Then unpack bed roll
pull my blankets tight
Hear a great horned owl
send a trill of hoots
From river below
hear far tugboat's toots
When the morning comes
thick fog obscures view
Wait for bright sun rays
burn through misty stew
Fingertips and pen
try to compose verse
But a heavy heart
makes my words sound terse
So I'll sit awhile
soak in mountain view
Til my body pours
all my inner rue
Stay another night
let stars spark some hope
Then I will descend
when my mind can cope
