Chapter 26
Nick had put his thought into work and finally took a walk himself, with Danny tagging along. In a way, Danny ditched the girls, wanting a peace of mind and not wanting to play mediator if a cat fight broke out.
"So, is Kate alright?" Danny asked, not being able to hold himself back.
His curiosity had gotten the best of hin, with his concern too. He still felt bad for what happened and wished he could make things right with Kate.
" Hmm, just a bit on edge after what happened. This is why I suggested she take a walk with Anna." Nick responded.
" That's good."
" She must have been really scared."
" You have no idea."
" I hope what happened won't mess ruin the whole trip for her."
" Same or else I wouldn't be able to enjoy it myself."
" She'll be okay." Danny said.
" I hope so." Nick said, removing a small branch away from his face.
"No, she will." Danny said, nodding to himself.
Nick stopped walking and faced him. " You sound so sure."
" I am. She's Kate after all. " Danny shrugged with a coast of a smile displayed on his face.
The smile wavered when he noticed Nick stare at him with no expression, yet his eyes spoke.
" What?"
Nick sighed before he spoke, " there's something I need to say."
By his friend's tone, Danny could tell that what Nick wanted to say was serious.
" You know you can tell me anything."
" First I want to say, you're my best friend and I trust you."
" And I feel the same."
Nick nodded. " With that, I believe you know that my relationship with Kate is something I hold dear to my heart. You know that she's the love of my life and I would do everything in me to keep her both safe, and feel loved."
" Dude, I know all that. Why are you----"
" As my best friend, I hope I won't ever have to question your view and intentions towards my relationship with her."
Now Danny frowned with his heart racing a little.
" My view remains the same."
" Are you sure?"
Danny nodded." Ofcourse."
Nick stared at him for a little over a minute before he sighed, " okay good. It's just that I started having random and weird thoughts after this morning."
" I get it man." Danny said.
Nick sighed, " I thought it would be best to have this conversation, and get it out of the way, you know." Nick explained, hoping that Danny wasn't really offended but at the same time, would understand the message.
" Hmm." Danny nodded. " You're overprotective, like any boyfriend would about their girl, more especially a girl like Kate."
" What do you mean?" Nick frowned a little.
" Kate is a treasure man, even a stranger can tell."
Tension eased off Nick's shoulders, yeah you're right."
" Nick, you'll always have my support, just know that."
" Thanks man."
The two friends did their bro hug before Nick suggested they move along before it got to late.
Danny on the other hand watched his friend walk ahead, as he tried to call his racing heart. He had felt on edge and wary about the thought of his Nick calling him out on how he'd felt towards Kate. He clearly didn't want tension between them because at the end of the day, Nick was still his best friend.
It took a few minutes more of them walking, until they came across what looked like a cabin.
" Is that what I think it is?" Danny asked.
" Only one way to find out, " Nick was the first to move, not wanting to wait any longer.
Danny followed after hesitating for a bit.
When they had reached the cabin, Nick took the first step onto the porch step, which creaked under his feet.
It was clear that the cabin had aged.
A knock or two but there was simply no answer. Nick then twisted the doorknob and surprisingly, it moved.
It felt weird to enter a random house uninvited but they needed help. He hoped that he wasn't disturbing anyone, despite feeling like an intruder as he pushed the door open.
" It looks like no one's here, " Nick said as he peeked inside.
" You're right." Danny agreed.
He'd been peeking through the window and there seemed to be no movement.
" Any ideas?" Nick asked, glancing over his shoulder with the expectation of seeing Danny standing behind him.
Surprisingly Danny wasn't there, it looked like he disappeared out of the blue.
With the assumption that Danny was still around, he shrugged his shoulders not feeling the need to worry for nothing. Tension filled Nick's body once again when he entered inside. The inside had a little passageway that led to the living room. Everythinh seemed old and the smell was enough proof of that.
His wandering led him to the kitchen to find it in the same condition, as the rest of the house. The Windows were cracked in some parts, and the heat inside became a little too much. What did surprise him the most, was when he sneaked a peek inside the fridge and found fresh food and cans of beer.
'That is strange.' He thought.
" I think we've got ourselves quite an artist." Nick almost jumped out of his skin when he heard Danny.
" Jeez Danny, a warning next time!" Nick said, shooting his friend a look.
" Sorry." Danny said with an amused smile.
" Ha ha, very funny." Nick rolled his eyes. " What were you saying just just now?"
Danny, who had been standing at the kitchen doorways held up a bit painting. He'd found it in one of the rooms.
It was a painting of a beautiful young woman, laid on a vintage like couch. She wore a sleeveless night dress. In her hand that rested on her midsection was a large key.
The background was that of a sunset.
Nick took the painting from Danny, admiring it as it captured the eye.
" A painter and writer. I found a few poems, theatre plays, manuscripts, you name it. Danny continued to say.
" Maybe he's some retired film director?" Nick guessed.
" Or a psycho," Danny added, to which Nick half agreed.
They continued to look around, finding more things that peaked their interest. Their exploration didn't last long however, when all of a sudden something like a creeping sound, cane from outside.
"What's that?" Nick asked, glancing over to his friend.
" I don't know, but I know it came from outside.
They nodded at each other, making a mental agreement before they headed out of there.
Surprisingly, they found nothing.
