Isadora Gilmore always hated walking home with her older sister, Joanna, after field hockey practice, which was something Jo was well aware of.
Their mother, Emily, didn't like the idea of Issy walking home alone, despite it being a ten minute walk by foot, but Jo knew the 'dangers' of it. Issy didn't understand it at all.
Jo read up on true crime, wanting to be a lawyer. Sure, Harvard was where it was at, but Jo had her heart set on Yale. Yale being her father, Richard's Alma Mater and all.
So, when they got into the house, Issy yelled, "Mom! We're home!"
They hung up their parkas (Jo's was red and Issy's was dark blue) on the coat rack.
Emily called back, "We're in the living room."
Jo and Issy glanced at each other, before making their way to the living room. Jo undid the top button of her button-up shirt and stopped in her tracks at the sight of Lorelai.
Issy bumped into Jo and looked at Lorelai.
Lorelai faked a smile, "Hello, girls."
Issy stared blankly at Lorelai.
"Hello, Lorelai," Jo said with an equally fake smile.
"Did Christmas come early?" asked Issy. She looked at Emily, "Where's my presents?"
"Lorelai came to see us," Emily said.
"So, where are my presents?" asked Issy, confused. "Christmas came early, didn't it?"
The only time Lorelai and her daughter, Rory, came to visit was on holidays when the banks were closed.
Jo found it kind of sad that she and Issy didn't have a strong sisterly relationship with their older sister. It had something to do with Lorelai getting pregnant at sixteen and running away from home at seventeen. And the age gap between Lorelai and Jo (sixteen years) didn't help matters.
Jo liked to think that Emily depended on her and Issy to make up for Lorelai's pregnancy. Christopher sure screwed that up didn't he?
"So, how are you two doing?" asked Lorelai.
Jo crossed her arms, "Good." She glanced at the entrance hall, expecting her dad to walk in, since he should be home any minute now.
"Fine," Issy responded.
"You said you were taking a business class?" asked Emily.
"Yeah, mmhmm, yeah," Lorelai replied. "I'm taking a business class at the college twice a week. I'm sure I told you."
"Well, if you're sure, then you must have," Emily replied. "Would you like some tea?"
"I would love some coffee," Lorelai said.
The door finally opened.
"Emily? Jo? Issy? I'm home," Richard called.
Issy took off to go hug Richard.
"We're in here," Emily called to him.
"Just follow the awkwardness," Jo added.
Richard finally came in looking at some mail. He looked at Lorelai, "What is it? Christmas already?"
"That's what I'm saying," Issy said. "I'm trying to figure out where my presents are. I doubt they're in the basements next to Great-Grandma's creepy dog statues."
"Those are creepy," Jo agreed.
"And I doubt they're next to the angel statues with their naked butts," Issy added.
"Those are even worse," Jo admitted.
"Lorelai was taking a business class at the college today and decided to drop in to see us," Emily told Richard.
"What business class?" asked Richard.
"Well, she told us about it, dear." Emily asked, "Remember?"
"No," Richard replied.
"Yeah, I can't remember either," Issy said. "I think it must've been Easter or last Christmas. It's hard keeping track of these things."
"Well, actually, I came here for a reason," Lorelai said.
"Shocker," Jo muttered under her breath.
Lorelai continued, "Dad, would you mind sitting down for a minute?"
"You need money," Richard stated, going to put ice in a cup.
"I have a situation," Lorelai clarified.
"You need money," repeated Richard.
"Dad, will you just please let me get this out, okay?" Lorelai said, "Um, Rory has been accepted to Chilton."
Jo grimaced a little. She didn't hold any ill-will towards her niece, Rory. But she wouldn't exactly say that she and Rory were best friends or close despite being the same age, though Rory was two weeks older than her. She asked, "Chilton?"
"Oh, that's a wonderful school," Emily chimed in. "Jo and Issy go there and they really love it there. It's only five minutes from here."
"Ten minutes by foot," Issy added, glaring at Emily. "And I'm a big girl. I can walk to and from school alone."
"We're not having this discussion, right now, Issy," Emily chided.
"That's right," Lorelai said. "I mean, on the school aspect. Rory can start as early as Monday. Um, that they want me to put down an enrollment fee, plus the first semester's tuition and I have to do that immediately or she loses her spot."
"So it is a money problem," Jo replied. Why would Rory apply to a school that she knew Lorelai couldn't afford?
"Yeah, but it's not for me, it's for Rory. And I fully intend to pay you back every cent. I don't ask for favors, you know that."
"Oh, we're very well aware of that," Jo said. She only saw Lorelai like twice a year and never in between. Hell, Lorelai never even calls them to see how they're doing.
"I'll get the checkbook," Richard said.
"I can go get it," Jo told her dad.
"No, I got it," Richard said to her, before heading towards his office.
"Thank you," Lorelai said. "You have no idea. Thank you."
"On one condition," Emily said.
Lorelai mumbled something to herself.
"Since we are now financially involved in your life, I want to be actively involved in your life."
Lorelai asked, "What does that mean, Mother?"
"I want a weekly dinner," Emily stated.
"What?" all three of Emily's daughters said in unison.
"Friday nights," Emily continued. "You and Rory will have dinner here."
Lorelai started, "Mom..."
"And you have to call us once a week to give us an update on her schooling and your life," Emily continued. "That's it. That's the condition. If you agree, you'll come to dinner tomorrow night and leave here with a check. Otherwise, I'm sorry, we can't help you."
"I don't want her to know that I borrowed money from you," Lorelai said. "Can that just be between the four of us?" She glanced at her younger sisters and their mother.
"Does seven o'clock work for you?" asked Emily.
Lorelai forced a smile, "Perfect."
After Lorelai left with the check, Jo went to her room.
She picked up the phone that was on her bedside table and called her friend, Louise's number.
"Louise," the girl said after she picked up.
"Problem," Jo said automatically.
"What kind of problem?" Louise asked, "Is it a boy problem or an 'Help, I'm having trouble getting this stupid body in a bag' problem? Because you know I don't do dead bodies. That's Paris's job."
"It's an 'my niece is going to Chilton on Monday' problem," Jo told her.
"Oh," Louise said. "You know, Penny works in the office on Monday. I bet I can talk her into getting a hold of her file for us to look through to see if she can hack it at Chilton."
"She's pretty smart," Jo said. "She kept up pretty well with my dad when we were ten. At least play nice."
"Fine," Louise replied. "But one toe out of line and she'll see how mean we can really get."
"That's fine by me," Jo replied. "Bye."
"Bye," Louise said.
And they both hung up.
Chilton was going to be so interesting come monday. But first, she had to survive the Friday Night Dinner.
