Subway

It was a warm, sunny day in Brussels, Belgium. Anri and her elder brother Tim walked alongside each other down the busy streets. They were going to pick up their younger brother Henry from the airport. For the first time in five years, all three of them would be allowed to live together. For years, there was a constant custody battle between her father and his new wife and mother. Her father won over the children but didn't keep Anri because he "did not have the capacity". Henry was soon sent to a boarding school wth Tim in Luxembourg. However Tim was expelled due to getting in constant fights and was sent to a reform school in the Netherlands near their dad.  Anri thought that spending the next three weeks with her brothers was because of the death of her uncle Francis on her mom's side, who she was very close to.

Anri and Tim went down to the subway and submitted their tickets to the ticket manager and squeezed in the subway with several other passengers. As the doors came to a close, the lights flickered. Technical problems were not uncommon in this particular station. Tim sighed out of frustration as he pulled out a cigarette and lit it up.

" You're really going to smoke in this place?" Anri rolled her eyes.

" Shut up you idiot. It's a stress reliever." Tim inhaled the smoke gently.

Anri pretended she didn't hear Tim's childish insult " Just because you want to kill your lungs doesn't mean people don't value their own."

Tim mumbled something in dutch under his breath, and while Anri did speak dutch, she knew no slang in it since she was strictly forbidden from cussing in her house, but rather french slang which was heard from school. Any dutch slang she did know was more area specific. She figured it was something under the lines of " smartass". She cringed as he exhaled the dark grey smoke and began to cough. When the smoke began to fade, she noticed two dark, strange figures, all bundled up as if they were headed towards the harsh Russian snow. She looked away to avoid suspicion and let the thought go.

Two hours later, they finally reach their destination. Everyone quickly shuffled out. Anri and Tim rushed into the airport and went to the gate that Henry would be waiting at. Luckily for them, Henry was just getting off. As soon as he saw the two he ran and hugged Tim kola style and pulled Anri into the hug as well. Tim appeared uncomfortable but didn't exactly push Anri or Henry away. The embrace lasted a few seconds before Anri stepped back and Henry jumped off.

" I'm hungry. Let's get some food." Henry began walking towards the food court. Anri followed along happily, since she was feeling hungry herself.

Tim trailed behind slowly, not really caring just as long as they didn't make him eat. The three sat on a table while Henry and Anri ate some cheap airport food, or as Tim likes to refer it as; low class americanized food. Afterwards, they began to head to the subway, where rush hour would soon come to an end. The three teenagers huddled together onto the subway and waited for the train to get going. As people walked in, Anri noticed many police officers heading to the airport and one of the men she saw earlier was hurrying onto the bus. The man walked towards the very back and avoided all eye contact. Before the train could even start up, a very loud explosion sound filled the cart. Anri felt herself fly backwards, hitting a nearby pole on the head so hard that she was unconscious. Glass shattered everywhere and Tim felt his feet lift as he hit against the closed subway doors. Henry, who was sitting down, felt his body shift forwards and harshly hit the back of his chair, red blood dripped out of his lips which quickly grew pale.

Tim was barely conscious as the medics arrived and dragged people to the hospital. In fact, he couldn't even remember anything at all. He awoke in the hospital wrapped in bandages, and had an oxygen tube stuck up his nose. He looked slightly to his right and saw Henry who had appeared to be awake longer, though there was a patch on his right eye.

" You boys are lucky. Either one of you could've died." The nurse, who was tending them said in a gentle voice.

" Where is my sister?" Tim asked.

" What's her name?" The nurse asked.

" Anri Vermulen." Tim replied.

The nurse thought for a moment " I'll ask."

The nurse walked out and a few minutes later returned with a sad look on her face. She looked to Henry and asked " Is Anri your sister too?"

Henry nodded but looked puzzled. The nurse sighed " The doctor said she's dead. The collision on her head was very strong and caused her death."

The two boys's eyes widened. Henry fought back tears and shook his head " She can't be- She can't!"

Tim on the other hand fell in total silence. He couldn't speak. He couldn't move. He just stared blankly into space.

Weeks later, her funeral came around. Tim's smoking increased however what increased at the more alarming rate was his dosage of anti-depressants. He dressed nicely and slicked his hair back, he wore a red tie that resembled the ribbon Anri often wore. The funeral was small and simple. Henry was also there, wearing an identical suit and tie though instead of red, his was yellow. Many other relatives came, some friends also attended. Many spoke of both commemorating the horrible attacks committed by the terrorist of ISIS and commemorating the memory of Anri herself. However, Henry refused to speak. Instead, Tim
volunteered to. This was odd since many expected it to be the other way around. Tim stood at the podium and cleared his throat.

" My sister was only fifteen. Yet, she taught me more than any of my school teachers ever had. Which may not sound like a lot since the education system is completely rigged and full of politics. However, she really did show me a lot. She brought a light in my life that I wouldn't have had otherwise. She was kind, she was clever and she was always optimistic. Sometimes, I envied her. I could never be like that even if I tried. But I loved her regardless of that. The pain I felt could never be compared to an internet definition, the severity of it cannot be explained. I knew it was bad the moment my dosage of pills increased... And they will never understand that sometimes the actual habit has less to do with addiction and more to do with sanity." He stopped for a moment to take a deep breath and continued "It was as if I broke in half." He looked down into the casket. Anri was all cleaned up of blood. She looked just like she did when she slept. She wore a simple black dress and her ribbon as she normally wore it. He felt tears sting his eyes and his lip quivered. " I-I'm sorry.." He quickly walked off.

As the funeral came to it's conclusion, the rain which had been pouring down for weeks straight, finally stopped and the sun began to shine.
