23: Tower

The tower looms over you. It casts a dark shadow over you and Dim, staring down with an ominous gaze. Five black bands, similar to the ones on your arm. It's unmoving shape stands out from the entire canyon. Everything seems funneled towards it, likes it's at the center of the world. You go up the steps, cracking a small smile. You can remember the tower. Everything makes sense. Dim walks behind, marveling at the behemoth.

"It's huge... Are you okay?"

"Never better."

Dim frowns, unsure of your reaction. You've changed. You're like a different person all together. You're stride is stronger and talk clearer. It's an interesting change. A fascinating one.

You both move in, coming to the base of the tower. Dim looks around, searching around the broken rocks and dead plants. There's nothing on it. No doors or windows. It's clear that it's the front of the tower, but there's no way in.

"What is this?"

"The tower," you respond.

"But there's no way in..."

"I know. That's the way I built it. Only I can get inside."

"You built it? What? But this place is... old..."

"I know," you say, looking back at her with a warm, comforting smile. "I'll open it up."

There's two circles on the wall. Two powers needed. You place your hand on the wall, pushing into it. The second and third rings on your wrist glow. Energy flows from your fire and into the wall. The stone structure becomes shaky and thin, splitting apart like curtains. Dim can see inside past you. There's nothing. It's an empty black void. After a moment, the darkness changes, turning into real things. The space inside expands out and solidifies. Another set of stairs leads up into the tower.

"What was that?" Dim asks.

"I opened the door, and brought the inside of the tower here. Come on, there's still more to open."

She follows you up into the tower. There still aren't any windows, but there's light. Everything is moving and remaining still at the same time. It's unsettling. She doesn't want to look at it. Dim closes her eyes, but opens them when you take her hand.

"There's no need to be afraid. I'm here. I'll keep you safe."

She blushes, unable to react. You're powerful, and now your personality is growing to match it. You glow with confidence. It's a lot different from when you first met.

After a while of stairs, you come up on another level section. An old machine sits on a platform. Or rather, what's left of it. It's broken down, falling apart in several places. Rust covers it and the parts inside are exposed and busted. Decayed wires run along the floor to a large metal door on the other side of the area, closed shut. Two more rings are painted on the wall.

"What's that?" Dim asks.

"A generator, but it's been dead for a very long time. One moment."

You raise your hand once again. The first and fourth rings glow, and a shimmering light appears over the broken machine. It's parts are bathed in a blue and green aura. It shakes and begins to move, cracking back into place. The pieces on the ground float up, moving back into where they fit in. It shifts back into their normal places, moving in reverse.

"Woah..."

Soon the machine is good as new. The pieces are back in place and the rust is gone. You place your hand on the mechanism on top and push a wave of energy through the wires. The cords on the floor glow as electricity moved into the door, turning it on. The metal panels slide open, revealing the next length of the path.

"The engine is restored and the energy has been focused," you say. "One last door."

"(Y/N)?... I'm... a little scared... What's at the top?"

"A special tool. It'll fix everything."

It's a vague answer, but she doesn't press it any further. The whole thing is too strange for her to understand. You seem to have a firm grip on this place, and that's good enough for her. She trusts you.

The final door. It's a simple wood door, sitting calmly in the stone wall, and above the door is a single black circle, and inside that circle is an eye. A stone eye, carved right out of the wall. It stares straight ahead, unblinking and unfocused. You smile and move up close, reaching up.

"The final door..."

The fifth ring on your arm glows. A wave of invisible power moves through the air and into the eye. It shakes and shifts, and suddenly blinks. Dim jumps back in surprise as the eye moves around, looking at the room it inhabits. It blinks and looks down at you, focusing on your face. It stares at you for a few moments before closing. There's a small click, and the door slides open slightly.

"What... that eye... it... came to life... Is that the power you used in the mountain?"

"Yes. I'm glad I found it then, otherwise we couldn't have gotten in. We're almost at the top."

She takes your hand, holding it tightly. You glance back at her momentarily. You look at her empty side where her left arm should be. A sickening feeling wells up inside you. She shouldn't have had to go through that. You sigh and look up the last few steps, knowing that it'll be for the best.

You arrive at the top. It's open, giving you a few of the world. You can look out down into the canyon, the mountains in the distance, still covered in smog. Closing your eyes, you see further. The poison waters. The broken towns. The monsters roaming the land. It hurts to look at. In the center of the room, a large chair rests, covered in strange colored stones and objects. It's different than the rest of the place. More important.

"This view... You can see the whole valley," Dim says.

You smile. It's happy, and sad. You come up behind her, placing a hand on her shoulder. She looks up at you, grinning.

"So... this is it. You're... home."

"Yes... I am."

You take Dim's hand, turning her to face you. You kiss her lightly, hugging her close. The warmth between you two heats up your body, making you feel good.

"Thank you, Dim. I couldn't have done this without you. You're the one that helped me remember my purpose. I'm going to repair this world, and it's all thanks to you."

She blushes, deepening the hug. In your arms everything seems right. None of the monsters matter, none of the world's problems matter. Everything is right. She closed her eyes, feeling contentment for the first time.

Then, she's gone.

There's no noise. No nothing. She was there, and gone in an instant. You drop your arms to the side, a frown falling onto your face. You know she was good, and that's why she needed to go. You don't want her to see what's coming next. An act of mercy. You look back out into the world. There are problems. So many problems. So much pain. Too much pain. This world isn't right. Even if there is a little good, it's not enough to fix the whole world. The bad outweighs the good. You wish things could be different, but there's no other way. You're powerful, but there's only one method to fix the dark world now.

You go back and sit on your throne, placing your hands on the long armrests. It focuses your power, multiplying it more than you ever could alone. You close your eyes, developing a clear image in your mind. An image of a better world, free of pain, free of Lurkers. Nothing happens, then there's a sudden pulse from the base of the tower. The five rings glow on your arm, and then the five rings down the side of the tower glow in tandem. It shakes and rises from the ground, separating from the earth.

Power pulses down into the dirt. It rises and falls, changing shape. The world groans, alerting the Lurkers. They failed in their mission. Everything starts to spin. The earth rotates faster and faster and faster, losing itself. The mountains and ocean flatten out, becoming nothing. The world turns into a glowing orb, spinning rapidly in the middle of space.

You push out with a massive burst of all your power. It shoots through the new earth, reshaping it. Everything grows and shifts, becoming different. Becoming new. Becoming better. It spins, growing new mountains valleys. Green ones, full of life. New life. None of the old world is left. There are no remnants of it. The people that once existed don't know. It's for the best. They won't suffer anymore. Maybe the new ones will have it better off.

Eventually, the world returns to its natural rotation. You release your hands from the armrest spots. Your arms burn as you lift them. You look out over the new valley. The holes surrounding your tower are still there; an eternal guard to your domain. You smile, hoping that everything turns out better this time around. You hope that whatever caused the Lurkers learned its lesson. You're weak after the reset, drained of almost all your energy. You slump back into your chair, closing your eyes for what seemed like the hundredth time, going back to sleep for a very long time. Hopefully, things will be different this time around.

You wonder who put you in that coffin before.
