The Awakening

It was a bright day in the town of Galena, IL. It was a quiet town to have a small family, a perfect family, or that's what Lydia and Jakob Nox thought when they moved here 5 years ago with their infant daughter Lenore. Their daughter was now five years of age and loved playing in the woods behind their small country home. One day she went missing for a few days her parents were in a panic but the child was eventually found and was safe, or so they thought. A few days passed but suddenly Lenore's appearance started to shift slightly. Her bronze colored skin was getting patches of pale coloring. Her mother was visited by the vision of a tall pale man with no face in her dreams, telling her that her daughter was now marked and her fate was sealed. When Lydia woke that morning, she brushed it off as just a nightmare brought on by the memories of old legends she heard as a child, but when she was playing with Lenore that morning she saw a slender tall figure standing in the shadows of the trees in the back yard. Lydia got wide eyed and grabbed her daughter by the arm and pulled her into the house. The five-year-old was confused by her mother's strange behavior.

"Lenore go upstairs and pack up your stuffed animals okay."

"Mommy? Why? Are you otays?" Lenore said soft and sweetly.

"Yes, Mommy is okay we are just going to go visit daddy at work, it will be fun." Lenore got a smile on her face a mile wide and ran to her bedroom to collect her favorite stuffed animals. Lydia was pacing as she kept an eye on the figure from inside of the house. Once Lenore had emerged with stuffed animals in her arms her mother snatched her up and quickly made her way to her car driving away to the restaurant in which her husband worked. She sat at a table ordering food for her daughter before going to the bar counter and waving her husband to follow her. Lenore sat there alone for a while all their other patrons of the restaurant staring at her as if she were the spawn of Satan himself. She just brushed it off and waited for the return of her mother. Once her mother returned she held a small container and was accompanied by Lenore's father.

"Come on hunnie bee, we are going to talk a little vacation. How's that sound." Jakob said forcing a smile on his face.

"Otay daddy!" Lenore exclaimed. She loved being with her parents, they always had fun together. The family left the restaurant and abandoned their life in Galena. They ended up moving to a very small and remote town in Vermont. Things went well, except for the constant bullying Lenore would get for her completion. Years past and Lydia and Jakob were able to put what had happened in the past behind them, that is until Lenore turned 16. Her completion was almost completely porcelain white and her blonde hair was turning black at the roots. Lenore noticed the change one morning when she woke up. She screamed from the bathroom for not only her hair changing in color but a strange marking had appeared under her right eye. Her mother sprinted into the bathroom startled by the scream of her daughter.

"What is it Lenore?!" Her mother exclaimed before seeing the shock and welling up with tears.

"M-Mom... What is happening to me?! I understand the skin condition b-but this... Mom is there something you aren't telling me." Her mother just looked away from her as tears rolled down her cheek. She simply walked away not wanting to talk about. Lenore got upset with her mother and just stormed off to her room. She tried to cover the mark with a blend of concealer and foundations. She grabbed a beanie along with her black jeans and a black disturbed hoodie from her closet. She got dressed and pulled the beanie far enough over her head to hid the blacking roots. She made her way down the stairs and walked past the kitchen where her mother and father were conversing quietly.

"Don't worry about me coming home tonight I am hanging out with Matt, Tyler, and Jasmine tonight." She said before grabbing her backpack and leaving out the door before her parents could say a word to her. They just exchanged terrified glances. When Lenore got to school, she was bombarded by hateful comments but she just ignored them as she put her ear buds in and blared music from her phone. Her blue eyes a misty pale tone today. When she saw her friend Jasmine as sprinted over to her and pulled out a single earbud.

"Hey Jasmine! You excited to hang out tonight?"

"Sorry... But I am not hanging out with you anymore you demon freak! Just look at you you're a mess I don't know who would ever want to be even involved with you." Lenore was caught off guard by the comment but was suddenly jerked back to reality.

"Yo, Earth to Lenore! You okay girl? You seem a bit more spacy than usual." She shook her head realizing what she had originally heard was a delusion.

"Y-yea I am fine. Just had some trouble at home this morning."

"What is it now? Your mom still on your case about tonight?" Jasmine said with a bit of concern.

"No... Something else..."

"Well you going to tell me or what?" Suddenly the first bell rang and the girls both let out small sighs.

"Guess I will have to tell you after school." Lenore sighed as she walked away waving bye to her friend. She went into the school building and time seemed to fly by. The classes were boring as usual but something peculiar during her final period. It was a small study hall class. Lenore saw something from the corner of her eyes out of the window on her right side. She let her gaze shift and her eyes widened and then closed in pain. She got up and tried to open her eyes but couldn't. The pain was spreading from her eyes to her entire head.

"Lenore! You need to stay in your seat till clas-" The teacher didn't finish her statement when she saw the small trickles of blood coming from her closed eyes. Lenore collapsed to her knees as she held onto her head.

"Matt! Take her to the nurse. NOW!" A boy in the back of the room ran up to Lenore and scooped her up in his arms and ran out of the room and down the hall making a sharp turn into a small office where the nurse sat at his desk.

"Nurse Smith we need your assistance."

"Hold on Matt I wil-"

"NOW!" Matt interrupted. The nurse turned and saw Lenore and his eyes widened. He motioned for Mat to set her down on the bed like bench. He examined her and tried to get her to take some aspirin.

"W-will it help with the pain?" Lenore asked hesitantly as she took the medication from the school nurse.

"It should." Lenore downed the pills and laid there for a moment before sitting up. She could open her eyes again but they had changed a strange shade of purple which puzzled the nurse and Matt. They both decided to shrug it off and nurse Smith handed her some tissues.

"Here you have quite a bit of blood on your face." He said softly. Lenore took the tissues and wiped the blood off her face along with most of the makeup, but before anyone else beside her self could realize she covered her right eye with her hair. The dismissal bell rang and she tried standing but was slightly wobbly. Matt helped her out of the office and to the school parking lot.

"Well I am taking you home, got that."

"But Matt we were supposed to hang out with Jasmine and Tyler today."

"That can wait another day. I can't have you sick so stay home and rest."

"Fine." She muttered as she got into the passenger side of his Impala. Once he got in her started the engine and drove her back home. Once they arrived he pulled into the drive.

"Remember rest."

"Yea I get it..." She leaned over and gave him a small kiss on the cheek.

"I love you Matt."

"I love you too."

Lenore got out of the car and made her way inside of the house. neither of her parents were home at the time. She let out a sigh of relief and walked into the bathroom pulling off the beanie. Her blonde locks were almost completely black now and her eyes a red violet color. She washed off the makeup from her face and stared in the mirror as tears streamed down her face.

"What is happening to me...." She muttered as she tried not to break down. She shook her head and wiped the tears from her face. She pulled off her hoodie and walked to the kitchen in her red tank top. She opened the fridge to look for something to eat but she caught a glimpse of someone in her back yard. It wasn't the same slender figure she saw at school. It was a boy about her age in a yellow jacket with a strange mask. She walked to the sliding door not breaking contact with him. She opened the door and called out to the boy.

"Hey?! Who are you? What are you doing in my yard?" The boy looked away and then vanished in front of her eyes. She was beyond confused now not knowing what to think. She only closed the door locking it before going back to the fridge and shutting it as well. She wasn't hungry anymore. She only wanted to lay down cause her head was starting to pound again. She walked to her bed room and laid there wondering what was going on. Memories of childhood flashing back though her brain causing the pain to increase.

"There is something missing.... Something I can't remember.... Galena..." She muttered. She was becoming lost in thought but was jarred back by the sound of the front door.

"Lenore? Are you home?" It sounded like her mother. She ran down the hall and into the living room but was greet by a strange looking creature. An apparition of a horned man. He was completely black except for his eyes and strange mouth like markings which were bright red. She screamed and ran back towards her room but she wasn't moving far.

"You cannot run from me child. This is your destiny." Its voice was raspy and deep.

"I don't Believe You!" Lenore yelled but suddenly everything went dark and she woke back in her bed with her mother peeking in.

"Lenore? Did you not hear me calling you?"

"I-I'm sorry mom, I must have fallen asleep." She said trying to laugh.

"Well I went and bought dinner so if you are hungry."

"Thanks mom, I am absolutely starving. I have been having just one heck of a day." She chuckled as she got off her bed and walked to the doorway. She looked at her mom and for some reason her heart dropped. She could feel a worried energy coming from her and saw a fear in her eyes. She didn't say a word and neither did her mother but they just walked to the kitchen table where her father had already set up dinner. Her shot her a forced smile. She sighed as she sat in her chair wondering if she should say anything.

"Mom...Dad..." She said her voice low as she just stared at the empty plate in front of her.

"I-is there something from my childhood you are hiding from me? From back in Galena." She could feel the energy in the room shift and she regretted saying a thing.

"Hunnie... I wish we could tell you... W-we just can't." Jakob said as Lydia started to tear up.

"Why! Why can't you tell me anything?!" Lenore yelled as she slammed her hands on the table.

"I deserve to know! To know why I am turning into a ghost! Why my hair turning black! Why I have this mark! Even my eyes are changing! I deserve to know!" Lenore started tearing up as her mother cried.

"Lenore! Can't you see you are making you mother very upset."

"What about how I feel! I don't even know who I am! You know what I am done." Lenore stood up from the table and grabbed a pale grey off the shoulder shirt from her room.

"If you won't tell me I will find out myself."

"Lenore please don't We are safe here." She ignored her father and stormed out of the house and walked down the street. She pulled out her cell phone and called up her boyfriend Matt.

"~Hello? ~"

"Matt I need you to come pick me up please. I am down the street from my house."

"~Lenore? What's going on? O-Okay I am coming for you. ~"

"Thank you, Matt I just need to go to the forest."

"~I will be there soon. ~" The phone clicked as he hung up and her phone went black and she saw her reflection. Her skin was white as snow and hair black as night, but the scariest new feature were her eyes. They were blood red, the most unnatural color ever. She heard a honk and looked over to see Matt driving up.

"Get in and we can go." He said and she got into the car. Matt revved his engine and took off towards the forest. He stopped when they came to the entrance of the trail. Matt got out of the car followed by Lenore. He held his hand out to her and she took it with a smile. They walked the trail for a few hours but something strange happened. She could feel Matt's energy shift and engulf her. When she looked over at him he didn't look like himself. His skin was black with slits of red. He looked at her before throwing her against a tree.

"All you humans are stupid. I thought since you were chosen you would have a little bit of brains." He pulled a pocket knife from his pocket and took a step towards her. Her struggled to stand up after hitting the tree. A trickle of blood came from her mouth.

"C-chosen? What the hell are you talking about!" She snarled as she tried to turn from him but couldn't move.

"Your parents never told you. Sad, guess you will just have to die never knowing your purpose."

"Matt! What are you talking about! Have you lost your fucking mind!" She watched in horror as he flipped the blade open.

"I have never felt saner. You were supposed to become a proxy for my father's enemy... But we couldn't have that now could we... So, he sent me to imitate a meat suite and gain your trust... Make sure you were the one... and kill you." He quickly grabbed her arm and she instinctively tried to pull away but his grip was far too strong. She was terrified and tears began to roll down her eyes.

"This will hurt... A lot." He said before ramming the blade into her left eye. She let out a painful scream. He pulled the knife and threw it to the ground before he shoved two fingers into her eye socket and sloshed them around before ripping out her eye and throwing her to the ground.

"You are going to die alone...Bleeding with no one to mourn you... cause no one cares. Your parents hated you, towns people thought you were a devil spawn. You only had friends because they felt bad for you."

"B-But Matt... I love you."

"Awwwww sorry little girl but.... I never loved you." He walked back over to her and picked her up by the throat tightly.

"You have caused me more trouble than I would have liked. I hate playing babysitter. I wish he would have just let me slaughter you when we found out. I haven't killed a toddler before.... " He grinned and rammed her against a tree laughing manically as he kept pounding her against the tree repeatedly. He froze suddenly his grin fading slightly.

"It's your lucky day bitch..." He said before he suddenly disappeared. Lenore was alone and scared bleeding heavily from her eye. She stood up wobbly and could barely see straight. Her vision impaired from missing an eye and the buildup of pressure in her head from being bashed against a tree so many times. Her body was weak and almost collapse on the ground before she could even take a step. She finally tried to walk and was stumbling through the forest her hands covered in her own blood and was now spreading on the trees as she used them to try and balance herself. She almost lost her balance a few times as she stumbled through the woods. She suddenly felt very light headed and fell to the ground. Her vision was fading in and out but she could make out a face or a mask staring at her before she blacked out from the loss of blood. The masked person picked her up and took her to an old abandoned house. Several days went by as they waited for her to awaken. It was on the night of a full moon three days after the incident that she woke up. She jolted straight up from the bed she was laying in. For a moment, she thought she was home but the she realizes the decerped look of the place.

"Where am I?" She asked herself as she tried getting off the bed. Once she was standing the room began to spin around and she fell back to her knees. A sudden sharp pain pulsed through her head and she grabbed her head with her hands.

"Uhhhg! W-what is happening?" She tried to stand again through the pain.

"You should really still be resting. You are in no shape to be up and walking around." She heard the voice coming from a corner of the room but could not see anyone. Her vision was mainly black. That's when she lifted her hand to her left eye to feel it bandaged up.

"Oh, my god.... I-it actually happened... A-am I dead?" She asked as terror filled her chest.

"Well that's a tough question... Yes and no. You still have a shred of humanity left but you are not allowed to go back to your previous life." The voice said.

"Now please lay back down you just woke up from a three-day coma." She felt a hand grasp her left shoulder and lead her back to the bed. She willing got back into and she caught her first glimpse of the person. One she hadn't seen before. His skin was a blackish color and he wore a blue mask with black eye holes. She fell silent and just stared at him.

"Since I am treating you, do I get to at least know your name?" He asked her.

"It Len-" She stopped and thought for a moment.

"It was Lenore Skye Nox...... B-but I think Luna will suffice for now." She said looking at the sheets of the bed. She wanted to forget her life before but once she started forgetting the older repressed memories started flowing back into her mind. The guy just nodded and seemingly disappeared into the darkness of the room. She strained her eye to make sure that he was gone before she got off the bed once again. She was starting to regain her balance and began walking towards the dark outline of a door. She took a deep breath as she made it to the door and grabbed the knob. Her hand flinched at the icy coolness of it. She turned it and pushed the door open slightly and peeked into a long corridor like hallway, but something was off. The hallway was lighted, it was dim but still bright enough to make her wince. She stepped out into the hall and for the first time realized she was no longer in her normal clothes. Her shoes were gone and she was only wearing an oversized long sweater that hung off her shoulders.

"Where am I?" She muttered to herself as she slowly walked down the hall. She had past many other doors and wondered if there were other people here, but more so why was she there. A sudden fear struck her as she heard footsteps coming up from behind her. She froze not knowing what was going to happen.

"Do you want to come play with me?" A small girls voice said from behind her. She turned to see a small child in a pink dress with nice brown colored hair. Something felt strange about the child but she brushed it off.

"I would love to, but I am trying to figure out where I am." Luna replied to the child before turning away. She felt a grasp on her wrist and then suddenly she was pulled to the ground. A gasp came from her as her back smacked onto the hardwood flooring.

"Come Play with Me." The little girl demanded. Luna stared wide eyed at her as a pain came from her left eye socket. The bandages were staring to stain red with blood coming from her eye socket. She was paralyzed with fear until she heard another voice.

"Hey! Don't attack her!" The little girl let go of her grip and backed up.

"I just wanted to play." She said before taking off down the hall. A pale hand extended to her and she looked up and saw the same guy from t her yard the day she got attacked by Matt. She hesitantly reached for it and paused a moment looking at the hand to him before she grabbed it. He helped her up from the floor.

"Why are you out here? You should still be in your room." She could feel a coldness in his tone but she tried to think of a good enough reason.

"I....uhhh... I was hungry. I was told I have been out for a few days now. So, I was hoping to find some food." She said nervously hoping he would believe her.

"Well then Follow me I think there is some food we can get you." She nodded and followed behind him closely. They came to a staircase leading down and she paused, feeling an overwhelming dizziness. She couldn't understand why she felt like the entire building was spinning.

"Is everything okay?" He asked looking at her from behind the mask.

"I-I am f..." She stopped as the room began to contort and her eye widened in fear. The walls turned black and she was alone until a set of bright red eyes opened on what use to be a wall. They just stared at her in the darkness. She could feel the evil coming from them and her fight or flight senses kicked in and she took off running, but then everything went dark. She didn't see anything anymore until she heard a voice. The words were a blur but her vision was coming back to see a masked face staring at her from above. She looked around and felt a sudden pain run down her spin. She was laying at the bottom of the staircase.

"W-what just happened? How...how did I get down here..." She said watching as the mask boy extend a hand to her to help her off the floor. She took his hand and he pulled her up off the ground.

"Well you seemed like you were scared and took off running... but it was kind of over the edge of the stairs." She sighed hearing this from him. She wondered why she black out and why she saw what she did. She tried to shake it off.

"H-haha I must be really hungry if I am starting to see things." She tried to force a convincing laugh as she moved hair that had fallen in front of her good eye. He nodded and motioned for her to follow him. She walked behind him as he pushed open a large wooded set of double doors. Inside was what appeared to be a large dining room.

"You stay in here... I will be right back... Oh and if anyone bugs you just punch them." He chuckled slightly as he disappeared behind another door. She looked around the room trying not to give into her curiosity to much. This room seemed to pristine condition. She ran a hand over the smooth table surface. She heard footsteps behind her and thought it was the mask guy coming back. She turned around and gasped. There stood a boy looking at her but his face was strange. His mouth was sliced open in a permanent smile.

"Really?! Another one!" He walked up to her and she froze. She had never seen someone like this and it kind of terrified her.

"What's so special about you, huh?"

"N-Nothing.... I am just a normal person."

"Sorry that's a lie. You wouldn't be here if you were... Well at least not alive." She got a chill down her spine hearing his words. She saw him pull a knife from his hoodie pocket. She began backing up until she fell over a chair and hit the ground.

"I wonder if the boss would get mad if I gave you a few more cuts and bruises."

"I would rather you not injure me more..." Luna was suddenly filled with a strange anger. She pushed herself off the ground and tore the bandages from her face. She was tired of others trying to hurt her and not give her any answers. Her eye twitched as she stared at him the whites of her eye turning a deep black and the marking under it burning red.

"You know what.... Why don't you come give it a shot...? You won't scratch me! I am tired of the attacks and no one telling me a damn thing! WHY AM I HERE! WHERE AM I!" She yelled. Her raven hair started defying gravity and was floating and whipping around the air. She raised her hand slowly into the air and a chair raised from the ground. Blood and a strange black substance dripped from the empty socket of her left eye.

"I am done with it all!" She waved her hand towards him and the chair went flying. He quickly ducked and heard the chair shatter against the wall behind him.

"Yea normal my ass!" He snarled. He ran at her with his knife but was deterred when a hand grabbed his arm from behind and flipped him onto his back.

"Jeff that is enough. You should know better than to attack someone here of all places."

"What the hell Masky! She attacked me first! I have every right to stab her a few times." Jeff glared behind Masky at her but was slightly shocked when Luna collapsed to the floor smacking her face with a loud thud.

"What the fuck is up with her?" Jeff muttered as he picked himself up off the floor.

"It's a longer story than I want to tell.... But even I don't know everything about her. I know very little... He didn't tell me much... only to locate and get her." Masky sighed picked up Luna's limp body from off the ground and carried it to the door before stopping.

"Jeff.... I don't know what you did...but I fear you may have activated something that none of us are ready for." He then walked out of the dining room leaving Jeff just staring confused. Masky took her back up the stairs to the room she was given. He laid her on the bed and looked down at her.

"What is it about you.... Why is HE after you?" Masky whispered before shaking his head and leaving the room in darkness.
