Chapter 9: Seeking You
Dressed in a suit, Gabriel sauntered down the fleet of stairs. He headed towards the kitchen where his siblings already were gathered early in the morning. They were all scattered around the kitchen when he appeared. Viola's eager green eyes lifted. His sister jumped up from her seat.
"How did it go?" she asked erratically surprising everyone.
Gabriel groaned inwardly. His sister really had no lid on her big mouth.
"How'd what go?" asked Hunter who was sitting comfortably next to Hailey.
Gabriel sighed. "Seriously." He glared at Viola who raised both her hands in truce for her mistake.
Vincent looked between Gabriel and Viola. "You two are acting strange this morning," he remarked.
Gabriel went around Klaus and poured himself a cup of coffee. If he was going to tell everyone about last night, then he was going to need caffeine. Gabriel stood facing his family. All their puzzled eyes on him. "I met Sabrina last night," he told them.
"We know. We all did when she came for dinner," said Hunter.
Hailey laid her hand on Hunter's arm. "I don't think that's what he means."
Vincent straightened from leaning on the counter. "You met Sabrina again after you dropped her home?"
Gabriel's stern gaze was enough to tell them the answer to Vincent's question.
"What for?" asked Klaus.
Viola uncrossed her legs. "You told her," she stated more than asked.
Gabriel nodded to his sister. "I told Sabrina of my past, even about Robert," he said. Gabriel took a sip and looked around his family's expressions, that wasn't what he was quite expecting. They looked rather blank and confused.
"What brought this on?" asked Klaus. "You rarely open up to people."
"Sabrina is his mate," stated Viola. Her lips arising into a wide smile. "And it seems our brother has accepted, that even he needs a happily-ever-after."
Gabriel shook his head. He couldn't help but laugh at her. "Okay, I wouldn't go that far, Viola," he remarked. He wasn't one to believe in wistful notions.
Viola got off her seat and approached him. She wrapped her arms around Gabriel's waist, her head rested right over his heart. "I'm so happy for you," she said softly.
Gabriel set his cup down.
He leaned his head on his sister's and wrapped an arm around her. She was a grown woman who had trained to become a powerful wolf like her brothers. But to Gabriel, she was always the little girl he took to school and trained.
"I wouldn't have gone if you hadn't said what you did last night," Gabriel told her.
"I'm all up for a group hugs and cuddles, but why don't we celebrate this with champagne," suggested Vincent.
"It's eight in the morning," remarked Hunter. But Vincent just shrugged it off.
"Oh, come on, Vincent," said Hailey as she got out of her seat and opened her arms wide. "Congratulations, Gabriel." She wrapped her wide arms around Viola and Gabriel.
"Thanks, Hailey," said Gabriel.
"Me too-" It was sudden when Klaus abruptly joined and tipped them back from the force. But that wasn't all, Vincent and Hunter both attacked at the same time too, overly crowding their alpha.
"Alright everyone, I think the hugs are enough now," Gabriel said as he awkwardly stood in the middle of them.
"It'll never be enough," said Klaus from the group. "You deserve everything and so much more."
Surrounded by his family, Gabriel always knew that the reason he fought so hard every day was for the people in the room right now. These kids were his world and he would always protect them. Even if it meant staking his own life, which he gladly would for his pack.
"I love all of you," he said softly. "And I'm proud that you're my family."
"Oh shit-" the sudden voice behind Gabriel surprised everyone- "they're at it again, River!" It was Ryder who joined. "What are we all hugging about now?"
Vincent grinned. "What, jealous?" he jested.
Ryder took offence. "Pfft, as if," he said. "I'm just hurt that I wasn't invited."
Gabriel chuckled. "Where's your brother?"
Before Ryder could answer Gabriel, River sauntered into the house. Gabriel pulled away from his family. He was quick to close the short space between them when he wrapped his arms around River and Ryder. He was sure that he surprised the twins because even for them, this was a rare occasion.
"Gabriel's gone soft even before mating his supermodel," mocked Vincent. The crowd laughed and Gabriel scowled at Vincent for the judgement he was hearing so early in the morning.
"I wonder what he's going to be like after?" asked Hunter.
"Seeing how you became after mating Hailey. I think he'll have the same changes," remarked Klaus.
"What's going on over here?" asked Azura who also arrived for the impromptu morning meeting or celebration.
"Gabriel found his mate!" announced Viola.
Azura's mouth dropped open. But she contained her excitement. "Don't joke about this, Viola," warned Azura. "It's not funny-"
"She's not joking, Azura," pitched in Hailey.
The stoic enforcer's eyes softened. "Oh my god. Was it the girl from yesterday?" asked Azura and Hailey nodded. Azura turned her head to Gabriel. "Damn, you really did find her."
"Yeah. But it's still a work-in-progress," said Gabriel.
"Doesn't matter. Congratulations," Azura beamed a big fat smile for her alpha. Gabriel grinned, when suddenly, Ryder grabbed Azura and pulled her into their hug.
"When should we announce this to the rest of the pack?" asked Vincent.
Everyone started to discuss a game plan, but Gabriel stopped them. "I think it would be better if I get Sabrina to come over first," he said.
Ryder crossed his arms across his chest. "From what I've seen, she seems to like us," he commented.
"Never thought that that would happen," sighed Hunter. "Sabrina's not part of any pack, right?"
Gabriel nodded. "She's not," he told his brother. "I still have to convince her to join our pack and move here with me, with all of us."
"That's not easy for a lone wolf to agree to," said Hunter.
"Although, it makes things a lot easier for Gabriel," stated River. "He won't have to deal with any pack matters."
Gabriel titled his head. "You think I can't handle another pack to claim my mate?"
River put his hands on his waist. "I think you won't behave rationally about this," he said. "You go berserk on anyone that keeps anything from you."
Klaus snickered. "Imagine if another pack didn't approve of Gabriel."
"I could see why they wouldn't approve," remarked Hunter. The beta assessed Gabriel suspiciously.
"You know what, me too," added Vincent.
Gabriel scowled. "And why wouldn't this 'imaginary pack' approve of me?"
The group sauntered back into the kitchen ignoring his question, because they were either having way too much fun not telling him, or they would lose a limb if they had. River laid his hand on Gabriel's shoulder calming the alpha's rising anger down.
"I'm happy for you," River said. "Always will be." River joined the others in the kitchen to drink coffee and eat some breakfast before they got to work.
However, Gabriel had different plans today. "Sabrina wants to see the Institute," he told them.
Hailey lifted her head in curiosity. "That's great," she said with a smile. "Sabrina seemed very interested about our school."
Gabriel leaned against the doorframe as he enjoyed freshly washed strawberries. "I'm glad she is."
"Maybe that's because it gives you an excuse to see her," teased Vincent.
Gabriel glanced down at his brother. "Anyone that would want to contribute to the Institute is embraced openly," he said with poise.
"Oh really," Vincent snickered with the rest of the gang.
"Bring her by," said Azura slyly. "We'll be sure to show her a good time."
Ryder grinned over the rim of the coffee mug. "I can't wait to expose Gabriel's dirty little secrets to her."
Gabriel choked on the strawberry that was in his mouth. "What secrets?"
River bit back his amusement. "I think you know, Gabriel," he jested. "You better be careful."
Viola nudged the twins. "Stop joking around," she scolded.
Gabriel sighed in relief. The twins knew the most about Gabriel's adolescent and rebellious days, so it would be terrible if they got out of hand. "Thanks, Viola-"
"I'm going to be the one that tells Sabrina everything," Viola added cunningly.
Stumped. Gabriel rolled his eyes. "You guys are unbelievable," he scoffed. "Wait until it's your turn."
"Don't worry too much, Gabriel," said Klaus. "Hailey and I can show Sabrina the school, without any of these troublemakers with us."
"That's not fair," Ryder and Vincent objected first before anyone.
"Hold on, how am I a troublemaker?" asked Hunter.
"Seriously," Viola scoffed at Hunter. "You expose things without even trying."
Azura chuckled. "You might be the worst one out of all of us, Hunter."
"Klaus is right," said Gabriel. "I only trust Hailey and Klaus near Sabrina. The rest of you are banned from going anywhere near her." Gabriel moved around the kitchen after he declared his decision. He rinsed his hands and buttoned his suit's jacket. "I'm bringing her today, so-" he glared at the entire group of wolves- "Behave."
"Why is he talking to us like we're two-year old's?" asked Vincent.
"That's because you are," remarked Gabriel.
Ryder laughed. "He sure is," he agreed with Gabriel, which earned him a nasty kick from Vincent against his shin. "That hurt, asshole!" Vincent stuck his tongue out to Ryder who was seething with anger.
Gabriel moved around the kitchen and made his way towards the front door. "Don't burn the house down, you two," he warned.
"Are you going to pick her up from her house?" asked Klaus.
Gabriel nodded. "Yeah, why?"
"Empty-handed," remarked Klaus.
It clicked to Gabriel what his little brother was indicating towards. "Right," Gabriel smiled. "What should I take?"
"Flowers are always nice," suggested Hailey. "Perhaps something more personal would be better though. Does she have a favourite dessert or drink?"
Gabriel grinned when he remembered last night at her house. "She does," he mumbled. "Thanks, you two. I'll buy something before going to her house."
After a few moments of chatter and eating, Hunter spoke; "On the side note, why are we all sitting here like it's a day off?" he asked.
The all suddenly grew quiet. It hit them when they looked at the clock that it was closing in on eight-thirty, which meant that they were all terribly late. They all shot out of their seats and ran back to their bedrooms to get dressed for the day ahead. With a chuckle, Gabriel stepped out onto the porch with River, Ryder and Azura who were always promptly ready.
"Do you need me to come with you?" asked River.
"No, I got this," said Gabriel as he took out his sunglasses.
River nodded. "Be careful and come back right away. If anything feels off, you call me."
Ryder patted his brother's shoulder supportively. "You'd just scare Sabrina away, brother," said Ryder.
Azura snickered. "That's for sure."
River rolled his eyes. "Whatever-" he sauntered away with his arms crossed.
Gabriel got into his car and drove away from the property. The engine of his car was slick and quiet as he rode with speed down the freeway to Sabrina's house. He made a quick trip to the local winery to get the same bottle of Merlot wine, that they finished last night at her house.
Gabriel parked the car at the front of Sabrina's house. He was sure that she heard his car door close. He skipped up the steps of the porch and rang the bell of the front door. The door opened but it wasn't Sabrina who had answered. Rather it was a short woman, that had black short hair and thick-rimmed glasses. Gabriel met this woman at the gala, she was Sabrina's manager, Helen Chastain.
"Good morning," said Helen. Her brightly painted red lips lifted into a smile.
Gabriel took his sunglasses off. "Good morning," he said.
"I take it you're here to see, Sabrina?" she asked.
Gabriel didn't really understand why Sabrina's manager was grinning like a cat. "Yeah, she's expecting me."
Helen nodded. "Of course, now it all makes sense," she mumbled. "Well, come on in." Helen moved to the side and let him inside. She closed the door behind him. "You can take a seat." Helen took him to the same couch where he sat with Sabrina last night. "Would you like anything to drink, coffee or juice?"
"No. Where's, Sabrina?" He put the bag that contained the wine bottle on the counter.
Helen pointed upstairs. "She's getting dressed," she told him.
Helen sat across from Gabriel. It was strange to him that this human woman was watching him, just like how a wolf would. She had very large chocolate brown eyes, which would seem soft, but on Helen, they were intense and smart.
Gabriel bit back his grin. It was clear as day to him that Helen was loyal to Sabrina. Even if she wasn't a wolf, Helen surely had the qualities of one. He approved of the loyalty between these two friends, because one thing was sure that loyalty was hard to come by nowadays and it could never be bought. No matter how tempting the price tag seemed.
"You said it all made sense now," said Gabriel. "What did you mean by that?"
Helen pushed her glasses up her button nose. "Sabrina's not a morning person," she amused. "But when I arrived this morning, she was already out of bed."
Gabriel raised his brow. "So, you think it's because of me?"
"I know, for a fact, that it's because of you," Helen affirmed.
Gabriel sensed the tension in the air as soon as Helen's smile fell strict. Her warm eyes turn hard and she crossed her legs at the knee like Gabriel. "I know what you're thinking," he spoke first breaking the ice between them. "And I will never do such a thing to her to hurt her."
Helen nodded. "Good," she said. "Because even if you are a billionaire philanthropist, if you hurt Sabrina, I will ruin your life."
Gabriel grinned. "I have a friend just like you," he said remembering River who'd destroy anyone that fucked with Gabriel.
Helen looked down at her watch. "I don't know why she's taking so long," she grumbled. "I'll just go check on her."
"It's fine," Gabriel stood from his seat. "I'll go."
Gabriel sauntered up the series of stairs over to the large double doors at the end of the hall. He knew that it was Sabrina's room, because her scent was the strongest from this area, and that he could hear loud clanking from behind the door.
He knocked but she didn't seem to hear him. Gabriel entered the lounge area, with large white sofas, a coffee table and a blush pink rug. There was a balcony and a huge bed directly across from it. Gabriel was about to call out for her, but she beat him to it.
"Helen!" she called out from the other room, which he guessed to be the closet. "Can you come zip me up?"
Gabriel turned the corner. He found Sabrina clambering through her shoe-closet in an unzipped sky-blue dress, that reached her thighs. She had a white sandal clutched in her hand and it seemed she was looking for the other pair. Gabriel smiled at her clumsiness. He made it pretty obvious that it wasn't Helen who had arrived. But Sabrina was too stuck in her thoughts to take notice.
"Helen, hurry up. He should be here any minute," Sabrina motioned towards her back. "And this stupid shoe-" she released an aggravated groan- "this day can't get any worse."
Gabriel closed the last remaining steps he kept between them. He towered over her and he was careful not to touch her ivory skin, that looked softer than silk. Gabriel was about to push her wavy hair over her shoulder, when she had done it herself. Sabrina gathered her hair in a fistful and lifted out of his way.
"You're awfully quiet," she remarked.
Gabriel almost burst out laughing, but he held it back. He pulled up the small zipper, and as he did, the constricting fabric molded to her mouth-watering figure. But before he could finish, Sabrina dropped her hair. Heavy curls skimmed the back of his hand sending an alarming sensation in his body. The jolt up his arm was enough to make his body catch on fire.
"Oh my god!" she exclaimed startling him. Gabriel was sure that he was found out now. She ran over to a rack of clothes and found the white sandal peeking from under it. "I found my shoe-" Sabrina bent down on the floor and swept up her shoe, with a cute smile and the shoe in the air, she turned and faced who she thought was her manager.
Gabriel tucked his hands in his pockets and leaned on the wall.
Sabrina's mouth dropped open when she saw him. Both of the shoes fell out of her hands and bounced on the floor around her bare feet. "Ga...Gabe...Gabriel-" she fumbled- "Oh god-"
Gabriel's gaze was hot enough to burn right through her. "Good morning, Sabrina," he grinned wickedly.
"Er- I thought you were-"
"Helen-" he interrupted and stalked up to her. "I know."
Her breath seemed caught in her throat. "Why didn't you say it was you that came?" she asked shyly.
Gabriel shrugged. "I thought you'd see me," he said. "But when you didn't, I couldn't help but play along." Sabrina's lashes lifted revealing her minty-green eyes. "Next time, be careful of your surroundings," he tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear.
"Even if it's just you?" asked Sabrina.
Gabriel ran his finger along the thin skin over her rapid pulse on her neck. "You should know this by now, Sabrina," his husky voice sent a chill down her body. "I'm the most dangerous man around here."
Sabrina sucked in a sharp breath. "Oh," she mumbled.
Gabriel's placed his hands on her small waist surprising her. He purposely circled around to her back, under her hair. He wickedly pulled her closer to his body, that she had to rest her hands on his biceps. Gabriel seized the zipper and fastened the rest of her dress, that he couldn't do before. Although, even after he was done, he hadn't moved away from her, because his body and wolf were incapable of separating from her. Sabrina's sensual scent was carried through the air around him, and it was maddening.
Gabriel bit back the urge to kiss her, then sweep her off her feet and show her what made him so dangerous. Sabrina's grasp on his arms tightened. He was aware that he made her anxious just by the darkness in his gaze and the intenseness in his pheromones, that seeped through both of them.
"We should head out," he said softly.
Sabrina nodded. "Yeah."
Gabriel ripped himself away from his blushing mate. She quickly rushed past him with her shoes in her hands, that were gathered near her chest. Gabriel turned on his feet and walked out of her closet over to the lounge room where she was putting on her sandals.
Sabrina swiftly got to her feet.
"Ready?"
"Yeah, let's go," she smiled at him. Gabriel extended his hand to her, which caught her off guard, but she gladly took it. "Oh, hold on-" she let go and ran back to her bedroom- "You forgot this yesterday." Sabrina walked back with his denim jacket in her hands.
Gabriel grabbed the jacket from her. "Oh, thanks," he said.
Sabrina and he joined Helen on the main floor. They found Helen in the kitchen on her laptop clicking away at the keyboard. "We're heading off," Sabrina told Helen.
Helen lifted her eyes from the screen. "Okay, I'll see you later," she said. "It was nice meeting you again, Gabriel."
Gabriel met her earnest gaze, that told him that she wasn't holding a facade in front of him, like most people would since they feared him. "Likewise," he said truthfully.
Sabrina looked past Gabriel over to the table in the living room. "Did you bring that?" she asked.
Gabriel went and grabbed the bag off the table passing it to her. "For last night," he said.
Sabrina looked in the bag and instantly beamed a smile when she saw the bottle. "Merlot," she said chirpily. "Thank you, that's very sweet of you." Sabrina left his side to quickly put the bottle away in her cabinet.
Gabriel thought that because he was close to Sabrina that he could smell her distinct scent from himself. But he soon realized that her scent was particularly coming from his denim jacket. The jacket in his grasp had her distinguished scent seeped into the fabric.
"Okay, let's go," said Sabrina returning to his side.
"Yeah." Gabriel lips lifted.
They left her house and got into his car, but his eyes stayed on Sabrina. He guessed that she probably wore his jacket after he had left it behind. That's why her scent lingered on the jacket. Sabrina Sinclair cracked through every wall inside him, that he used to guard himself. Gabriel knew now why his wolf was so crazed over this woman. She was purely made for them and them alone.
