Chapter 22: Hunt

It was dark outside when Gabriel left his office alone. He knew that at any moment now that his phone would ring and it would be time.

He crossed the street towards his car when a streak of alertness whizzed through his body. He stopped in his tracks and turned around. His eyes surveyed the dark street, the hidden alleyways, flickering lights and dumpsters between buildings, but nothing was traced by his wolf except a faint scent. Gabriel frowned when he realized that someone was following him. A surge of annoyance rapidly filled him. He really didn't need to kill someone before he went to Sabrina.

"You know it's not a good idea sneaking up on me," announced Gabriel. He turned to find a familiar face.

"I'm not known for good ideas," she remarked. Her voice was low and sultry, like rich velvet caressing bare skin. "How are you?" A woman stepped out from behind the shadows, her smile was small but sincere. "Gabriel."

Zero had returned to New York. She had layers of leather formed to fit her sturdy and tall figure, her trench coat dragged behind her reaching her heavy heeled boots. Her sterling blue eyes glistened under the street light and her black hair was chopped up to her rigid jawline. The infamous rogue alpha was still as formidable from when Gabriel first encountered her.

Gabriel matched her smirk. "It's good to see you," he didn't realize when he let out a breath of relief; it was always like that when anyone was around Zero. "So, what brings you to town?" Gabriel asked.

The silver gleam in her eyes was attentive to everything that moved around them on this dark street. "I heard you mated," she stated.

Gabriel finally understood then. "How'd you find out?" he asked her.

Zero looked at him unimpressed. "You seriously need to ask," she raised a brow. "Everyone knows that the great Centauri alpha has mated. It's creating quite the buzz around the world."

"I didn't know the world cared who I mated," added Gabriel idly.

"Oh, they care," she remarked. "More than you know."

Gabriel's mood darkened. "No one lets me live in peace."

"You can say that again," Zero sighed. "So, who is she?"

Gabriel's smile peaked through from under his dark frown. "Sabrina Sinclair," he told Zero. "She's everything I wished for."

"That's good," Zero laid her resilient hand on his shoulder. "You deserve the best."

Gabriel searched Zero's firm gaze. "What about you?" he asked. "Found anyone yet?"

Zero's smile widened. "I'm not in search of a partner," she said. "I like sticking to my solitude."

Gabriel chuckled. "You know you're not alone, right," he said. "All the rogue wolves follow you, even my pack respects you along with other pack alphas."

Zero's eyes softened. "True, I do have a very large pack of wolves that needs me," she said referring to the rogue wolves that she looked out for her entire life.

"So, you don't wish to mate?" asked Gabriel.

"No, I will when the time comes," she said. "Besides, I've heard it's impossible to resist once you've found your mate."

Gabriel grinned knowing full well that Zero spoke the truth. "That's true... no matter how much one tries to deny it."

"Also, do I look like someone who'd let her mate walk away?" Gabriel and Zero exchanged an amused look, that told them that the extreme possessive streak was in both of them.

"I wanted to thank you for joining me in the pack treaty," said Gabriel.

Zero smiled. "I'm glad we did," she said. "It's time for our kind to live in peace. I'm bored of killing assholes who don't fuck off."

Gabriel laughed. "So true."

Suddenly, Zero's eyes sharpened. "So, why don't you tell me why you got so nervous when I found you on the street?" Zero popped the bubble around him.

Gabriel's brows shot up. "I wasn't nervous."

"Yeah, save it," retorted Zero. Gabriel liked to believe that Zero was the older sister he never had. "What's going on?"

"My mate's being targeted," he told her.

"And now you are too," finished Zero. "Is this about Richard Brady?"

"You're quick to catch on," amazed Gabriel. "How'd you know?"

Zero's blue eyes glistened like the moon above them. "Because that's what brought me to town."

Gabriel nodded. "King informed me that Richard Brady didn't do anything to get himself killed," he said.

"I called King too," she informed.

"You called him," astounded Gabriel. "He talks to you?"

Zero nodded. "Of course, he does," she said. "Why?"

"That bastard gave me the boot and he talked to you," said Gabriel. "You're more dangerous than me."

Zero grinned. "Perhaps, I look friendlier," she jested.

"Seriously," Gabriel shook his head.

"King's a good kid," believed Zero. "He's a bit rough around the edges and pricks everyone just to test them. However, I'm tougher than that. He tried his hardest to fuck with me, but I'm not that easy to scare."

Gabriel tilted his head. "Do I look easy to you?"

"No, but you're a softie for family," Zero retorted. "I just have to mention someone you love and I'll probably get punched in the face."

Gabriel opened his mouth but then he closed it. "I wouldn't punch a girl," he muttered.

Zero's grin widened into an amused chuckle. "And that's the difference between you and King," she stated. "King would kill anyone that fucks with him. He's no gentleman when it comes to revenge."

Gabriel understood Zero was warning him to be careful of King. "Anyways, did you find anything on Richard Brady?"

"Nope, and honestly I don't really care," said Zero. "If more wolves start to drop then I'll take action, but only Richard was killed so far. So, I don't see a problem."

"Damn, did anyone like Richard Brady?" Gabriel laughed at the poor guy who died and no one gave a fuck.

"That man gave me a lot of attitude," Zero told him. "And he tried to feel me up once too."

Gabriel gaped. "He did!"

"I was at my friend's party, so I couldn't do anything except break his wrist," she said.

"I didn't know," said Gabriel.

"Not many do," she added.

Gabriel knew nothing about Zero's life, he didn't even know her real name and no one on his team could find it either. Azura and her team tried for days to dig up information on Zero, but they all failed.

"What are you up to nowadays?" asked Gabriel.

"I'm on a new mission," answered Zero. Gabriel grew interested. "I held back for years until I was ready, but I think it's time for me begin," she explained further.

"What mission?" asked Gabriel.

"Cage fights," said Zero. "I am going to end all cage fighting organizations."

Gabriel knew all about cage fights. They were underworld associations that made millions off of kidnapping all sorts of wolves to fight in cages. It was disgusting people, that trafficked innocents to battle each other for years until death took them or they were sold off somewhere else as slaves.

"How will you do it?" asked Gabriel. "Cage fights is a large organization."

Zero raked a hand through her dark hair. "It's better if you don't know," she said sternly. "Some high-class people are going to be involved. So, if authorities ask you about it, you need to be able to say you don't know anything."

Gabriel bit back his smile. "It's sweet that you care about me," he said.

"It's not just you that I care for," Zero said strictly. "You have a family, a pack. They all rely on you, so you can't be in any trouble."

Gabriel softened. "A lot of people care about you more than me," he said. "Every single rogue wolf adores you, and every single person you save worships you, like I have."

Zero put her hand on his shoulder. "You're not going to start crying, are you?"

Gabriel rolled his eyes. "No."

"Good, because I don't have any tissues," she remarked. "And I don't need a man like you to cry on my shoulder."

Gabriel chuckled. "I can't wait until you find a mate and need me for advice," he said.

Zero looked confused. "You're the last person I'm coming to, buddy," she said.

"Uh huh," remarked Gabriel. "Hey, I'm getting married soon. Will you be able to make it to the wedding?"

"Do you want me to come?" she asked.

Gabriel looked into her blue eyes. "Yes, I do," he affirmed. "And I know my pack is dying to meet you again."

Zero smiled. "I'll be there."

"Where do I send the invite?" asked Gabriel behind her.

Zero looked over her shoulder. "I'll know," she waved at him before she walked off into the dark street, becoming part of the shadows again.

Gabriel got into his own car and drove with speed down the streets. Through the quiet roar of his car's engine, the phone rang. He answered the call he knew was River.

"He's here," said River darkly.

"Secure the area," commanded Gabriel. "I'm coming."

They cut the phone and Gabriel pressed on the gas.

-Sabrina's POV-

Sabrina was on the floor securing all the boxes tightly shut with tape, so they'd survive the move without opening.

Helen appeared beside her. "Hey, do you want to donate all these?" Sabrina turned and saw all the boxes packed in the hall.

"Yeah, they're just some books and old clothes," answered Sabrina hastily, since the trucks were waiting outside the house. Sabrina packed her shoes and she was extra careful not to ruin them. "I have more stuff than I thought," she grimaced.

Vincent chuckled behind her as he carried out the last remaining boxes. "Is that going to stop us from shopping though?" he teased.

"Probably not," she chuckled.

They all hurried and carried out the last boxes out of the house. The workers quickly emptied the house too. Sabrina did one final sweep of the place to make sure nothing was left behind. She reached her bedroom last and all the furniture had been moved with the cabinetry gone too. Helen really worked her magic with getting this house emptied and back on the market for sale.

Sabrina heard the ignitions of the trucks turn on and them leaving from the property. She bent down to check under the bed's frame to make sure nothing had fallen down there.

It was faint when footsteps approached behind her. Sabrina lifted and turned behind her looking into the dark room.

"Vincent, Helen?" she called out, but there was no reply. "Ryder?" still no reply. "Who's there?"

Sabrina stood alone in her bedroom. She realized that the shadows grew as she inched back into her bedroom. She reached for her cellphone but it wasn't with her. Suddenly, the footsteps stopped behind her.

"My angel," said a familiar voice. "Where do you think you're going without me?"

A chill crawled down her body and she froze. That voice! thought Sabrina. She knew exactly who had walked into her bedroom.

The door slowly closed shut and Jon Adler walked into the room. He was dressed in black, his bulky body loomed dangerously. His hands covered in leather and he held a long dagger.

"I didn't want to do this," Jon inched towards her. Sabrina couldn't make any move before Jon's massive form slammed into her. He pushed her onto the ground, his hands feeling her body and she growled as he collared her neck.

"What are you doing?" she gasped out.

Jon took out a syringe from his pocket. "This will calm you down," he said crazily. She let out a scream when he stabbed the needle in through her thigh and injected a white liquid inside her. "I won't hurt you," he said. "I could never hurt you." He threw off his gloves and felt her skin with his sticky palms.

Sabrina's whole body paralyzed. "You killed Richard Brady," she said even though her head spun. "Why?"

"Because he touched you," he answered crazily. "I don't like when you're touched. You can't be tainted." Jon's inky black eyes looked over Sabrina's face.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" she groaned. But she knew that she wasn't in any danger because Jon may be crazy, but like he said, he won't hurt her. "Look, Jon, my family is right outside. They'll hurt you if you don't stop. So, let go of me and we can talk about this."

His hands collared around her neck tightened. "I don't want to," he said. "You're mine and I hate that you rely on them and not me."

Sabrina fisted his thick wrist trying her hardest to loosen the grip. "You're hurting me, Jon," she choked out.

He loosened his hands. "I'm sorry," he whimpered back.

She coughed and turned to her side. Sabrina would love to transition into her wolf and kill this asshole but fighting him in this small space and he had a knife could be dangerous. Plus, the drug had taken effect on her body, so she wasn't transforming any time soon.

"What is that?" he asked. "Those marks?" Sabrina froze when she saw his eyes grow villainous. He slapped her hard and throttled her throat again. "Who laid their hands on you?"

"The love of my life, asshole!" she snapped.

Jon gaped. "You can't have anyone. I'm the only one for you," he whispered near her ear. "I'm your mate."

Sabrina gaped. "What? How do you-"

"I know all about your abilities," he laughed crazily. "I know that you wolves need to find your mate to survive. How do you think I found this drug?"

"You're insane," she snarled.

Jon pushed the straps of her dress down. "I'm your real mate, Sabrina," he whispered. "I should erase those marks and put mine. That's how it works, right? You mark your mate."

Sabrina struggled underneath him. "No, don't you dare!" she kicked and pushed, but he was too heavy for her. And she realized the more she struggled, the more the drug heightened.

Jon licked up her neck. "You taste better than I imagined," he said. Jon kissed up her throat then her cheek, but she moved her head back so he wouldn't touch her lips. "Make the same face you made during our photoshoot. I loved that expression. Were you thinking about me?"

"I was thinking of my mate," she said. "My Gabriel."

Jon's face paled and he hissed his mouth back. "He's not for you," he gritted out. "Stop bringing him up or I will kill you!" Sabrina lazed and her eyes looked at Jon with nothing but amusement. "Why are you smiling?" Jon asked.

"Because I'm not scared of dying," she said as his fists choked out her breath. "I learned what true family means now. And even if it was for a short while, they all showed me that I was worth fighting for. So, you can kill me Jon, but you can't kill the love I have for them... for... Gabriel."

Jon's eyes soaked in wrath. "He doesn't love you," his choke tightened on her throat. "Only I'm meant for you."

Sabrina's eyes blackened. "Gabriel," her mate's name came off her lips as a whisper. But little did she know that her mate wasn't going to lose her yet either.

"I think that's enough," Gabriel appeared.

Jon gasped in surprise. He toppled back when Gabriel chucked him across the room singlehandedly. Sabrina coughed as her throat begged for air again. Ryder, River and Vincent had arrived and grabbed Jon. They weren't even surprised that he was the stalker. Sabrina got off the floor, she leaned back against the bed's frame. Gabriel's eyes glared at her throat, that had badly bruised marring her beautiful skin.

"What took you so long?" she asked through her coughing fit.

Gabriel bent down on the floor. "We needed the proof before we killed him," he said.

"What proof?" she asked.

"The cameras around the house recorded everything in here," said Gabriel.

Sabrina gaped at him. "How'd you even-"

"We've known for a while," informed River.

"Ever since the second attack," added Ryder.

"We knew the stalker would be back," said Gabriel. "So, we set a trap."

"Hold on, I don't have cameras around my house though," said Sabrina.

"I installed them," said River.

"When did you do that?" astounded Sabrina.

"When you got the package of hands," said River. "It took all night, but I got it done."

Sabrina smiled. "I can see why Gabriel doesn't lose his head," she remarked.

River grinned. "Now, for the fun part."

Vincent and Helen helped Sabrina off the floor and Azura was quick to inject an antidote for the drug. "He told me that he killed Richard Brady," said Sabrina. It didn't seem like Gabriel heard her because he looked as if he was ready to drink Jon's blood and then eat him for dinner.

Gabriel straightened to his full height. He shrugged off the jacket of his suit and rolled up his white sleeves. River and Ryder placed Jon, handcuffed to a chair serving him to their alpha.

"It seems that you have an obsession with Sabrina," said Gabriel idly.

Jon's eyes glared at Gabriel. "Because she's mine," he snapped. "You just met her now. I've known her since the beginning. Tell him, Sabrina!" Jon's eyes looked at Sabrina wildly and wanton. "Tell him how I helped you rise to fame and how much I love you."

Sabrina frowned. "And you think the best way to show me you loved me was killing Richard Brady?"

Jon's eyes popped open. "He touched you," he drawled. "No one touches you, even I can't."

"You're sick," said Sabrina.

Jon looked away from her. "You're the only one who's perfect for me," he said softly. "Nothing compares to your beauty."

"Okay, that's enough," said Gabriel. He slammed his fist into Jon's face, over and over again, until Jon's jaw turned purplish blue. Gabriel didn't stop until blood spluttered out of Jon's nose and mouth.

Jon spat blood out of his mouth onto the white floor. "Stop," he cried. "What did I do to deserve this?"

"I've seen hundreds like you-" Gabriel leaned into Jon's face, the man whimpered back and looked at Sabrina- "No," growled Gabriel as he covered Jon's gaze. "You don't get to look at her. The only thing you're going to see now before you die is my gun."

River handed Gabriel a revolver fully automatic and loaded. He held the pointer against Jon's forehead and he ruthless released the trigger. Three shots were deafening, they blared through the large room.

Sabrina and everyone else saw Jon fall to the floor, he was limp and definitely dead. She caught a glimpse and a rush of despair ran into her blood like ice. Gabriel had shot Jon once in the forehead and the other two shots were in the Jon's eyes. Gabriel really meant that the last thing Jon would see was Gabriel's gun.

But as scary as this was, Sabrina had realized that it was over. None of this would ever terrorize her again.

"Get this cleaned up," instructed Gabriel.

Azura was fast to grab the gun and her team had gotten started on their alpha's orders.

Gabriel returned to Sabrina's side. "It's done," he said softly. "You're safe now."

Sabrina sank into his arms. "I'm safe when you're by my side," she whispered and hugged Gabriel hiding her face in the crook of his neck. She inhaled his darkened scent, it still had remnants of feral danger that had surrounded Gabriel from killing Jon. But she didn't care because all she could feel was her mate and the strength of his wolf. And she knew that all she needed was her mate...her Gabriel.
