Chapter 9
"Oh my God, what happened to you?" Cyndi jumps out of her chair and rushes toward me. She grabs my face and arms inspecting every inch of my skin.
"It looks worse than it actually is. I'll explain but we need to cover a few other things first." She drops her hands from my arms. The strained expression on her face lets me know it's hard for her to stay in dean mode and not go into full-blown mom mode. She nods her head in agreement and finally looks past me noticing the two boys.
"Hello, Barron. I'm glad to see that you are alright after whatever happened."
"I have your daughter to thank even though it pains me to say that." Cydni looks between the two of us with a questioning look.
"Later." I mouth to her. "Our first problem. Barron's guard has been compromised. We are not sure how many but we took out the ones who attacked us at his home. He needs to get to the council and be assigned new guards. I'd recommend some Nephilim."
"I'll make arrangements as soon as we are done." She heads to her desk and makes a call on her phone. "One of the schools' trainers is coming down to get you. He'll escort you to a room and stand guard until I've made arrangements." A solid knock sounds at the door. Cyndi gestures for Barron to answer. When I hear the sound of the door shut I continue.
"He is off my team." I point behind me while keeping my eyes locked with Cyndi. "He almost got himself killed by disobeying direct orders and I won't let him do it again. He's a risk to my team."
"Jade, I was only trying to help."
"Shut it, Zach!" I yell and hear the sound of glass shatter next to me. The back of my head starts throbbing. I take deeps breaths and clench and unclench my fists. Cyndi's attention snaps from the glass to me. "It's my fault." My temper cools itself but the throbbing continues. Great, my first headache not caused by a concussion.
"How did I not notice. The spell is gone. What happened?" She rushes back over to me and envelopes me in a hug. Now that the head of the werewolf council is gone the momma bear is out.
"I'm fine mére," I whisper to her.
"You had a demon inside of your head. You are not fine." Zach says. Cyndi stiffens in my arms and pulls away from me.
"He's off my team."
"We'll figure that out later. We have bigger problems. The school keeps you hidden but once you leave you won't be. I can't do the spell again. I'm too weak from the last time and I don't trust anyone else to do it. That means your abilities will also be much more difficult to control." Her wide green eyes access me worriedly.
"Don't worry about that. I need some rest and then I can use my powers to-."
"Using your powers is too dangerous." Before she can say anymore I step out of her arms.
"Not using them is too dangerous. If I hadn't used them Zach would be dead and so would I. The only reason I got him out was because of them. I can't hide them forever. Besides, I don't have a choice. No spell means that my powers are available and I need to learn how to control them or they'll control me. Those people hunting me want me because of what I can do. It's better I know how to use it against them. We need everything that can help us." I leave Cyndi and Zach in her office. For the first time ever my big bedroom is comforting. I lay out on the large soft bed and start mending up my walls.
I don't look at what's lurking behind them afraid of what I might find. Something's back there. Dark and dangerous, waiting, but I don't know for what. I lock off certain places more than others. I'll need to learn how to cloak myself completely and use what powers I can. I have to start somewhere in order to learn how to use them. I'm not sure how long I lay here but eventually, I get up to go take a shower.
After a quick rinse, I rummage around in my closet for something to wear. Yes, jeans! I pull out my pair of favorite black skinnies and pair it with a maroon cropped bustier. "Perfect," I say to myself. To pull it all together I throw on a pair of black knee-high combat boots.
My head turns to the door when I hear someone approaching. I wait for a second but no one knocks when they've reached my room. "I can hear you breathing. What do you want?"
"You can hear me breathing?" Zach asks through the door. Before he even finishes his sentence I'm at the door yanking it open.
"Yes, it seems my hearing is even better than it used to be. Don't make me repeat my question." I say glaring at him.
"I know I'm the last person you want to see but Cyndi told me to give you an hour before I came to see and its now-."
"What is your point." I interrupt. He takes a deep breath then stands up straight.
"I am still on your team. Cyndi's orders. She says this is my last chance." A crunching noise brings our attention to the now crushed doorknob in my hand. Better hearing and stronger as well. Things are going to become even more interesting than they already are. Instead of arguing I save my breath and time.
"You disobey an order again or get in my way and I'll kill you myself." Instead of coming up with a snarky comment or calling me a bitch he just nods.
"I was expecting you to be a lot more difficult."
"I don't have time to hash this out with Cyndi. We need to get back to the safe house and make sure everyone is okay." When he doesn't acknowledge me I flick him on the nose.
"What the hell?" He finally moves his eyes up to look at me.
"I know my tits are amazing but you are already making me want to kill you. You need to keep your eyes up here," I say pointing to my face, "and listen to me."
"I wasn't staring at your chest I was staring at all of you." At that comment, I cross my arms and stare him down. "Not like that. You're different. There's something off about you but I can't tell what it is."
"Good, that's my goal. I'm trying to cloak myself. Hopefully, soon it'll cover that I'm different at all. I'm just trying to pass as a normal Nephilim or even human. That could come in handy." I shove past him and head to the schools' exit.
When we appear on the other side of the portal in the safe houses living room no one greets us. I look around and notice most of the doors are closed and hear the sounds of deep even breathing. They are all sleeping.
"What's he still doing here?" Constantine asks when he appears in front of us. "Sweet mother of God." He says when he takes in my outfit. He bites on his knuckles to keep himself from doing anything stupid.
"You saw me naked a few hours ago and now you're about to blow your load because of this," I say gesturing at myself.
"Luv, a few hours ago you were in a state of shock and because I'm a gentleman I thought it best not to bring up how I wanted to fuck you all day long but now that you're better, that changes everything." He gives me a grin that I know all too well and I can smell the lust pouring off of him.
"Same old Constantine. Always trying to shove his cock somewhere." From beside me, Zach lets out a low groan. He doesn't want to be here apparently. "If he fucks up, we'll kill him together," I say, bringing us back to the original topic.
"I'll enjoy that especially because of what he's been thinking about doing to you this whole time."
"Oh do tell," I say smiling. "He said he wasn't staring at my tits earlier but I didn't believe that for a second."
"He was thinking about doing a lot more to them than just looking." He says glaring at Zach. I laugh softly not wanting to wake the others.
"I'm right here you know. Stay out of my head. My thoughts are private." Zach glares right back at him.
"My telepathy skills are a little shabby. Barron was the first person I used them on in a while. I think I need a little practice."
"Don't you dare." Zach weakly threatens. I look into his eyes and see the image in his head. Looks like Zach isn't so sweet after all. I called that one immediately but apparently I was wrong about him being a virgin. The images circling around in his head definitely come from experience. It's like watching a porno with the two of us as the lead stars.
"Hey." Constantine bumps me causing me to lose the images. "I don't like another man causing your breathing to change like that." Being inside his head almost felt real. I look down at my arms to make sure that Zach's hands aren't in the act of stroking them. My neck where he kissed me feels warm. I absentmindedly rub my hand against the spot. When I look at Zach he's eyeballing where my hand is placed. "Get some sleep while you can. Cyndi will follow the plan we made and send a car to come get us. We can't risk someone being able to track a portal if we open one." Without a word, he heads off to the nearest empty room.
"Would you like to talk now?" Constantine asks when he hears Zach close his door. I let out a sigh and drop onto the nearest couch.
"Yes, we won't have another moment for privacy like this in a while. Tell me what happened. Why was everyone so afraid of me when I got back from." I pause trying to come up with the name but I can't. "What did I even do? I've never heard of anything like that before."
"After you took enough blood you bolted upright in the bed. We tried getting your attention but it was like you weren't even here." He walks over and takes a seat next to me.
"That's because I wasn't. It was as if I was flying. I followed his laugh to where he was."
"A minute or so passed and all of a sudden your eyes popped open but they weren't yours. They were black pits like a demon. You even smelled like one. Then you started talking but it didn't sound like you. It was so cold and lifeless." Then he stops.
"What else." I stare him down. "I can handle it. I want the truth."
"Your canines extended into fangs." He strokes my face gently but I move away. "If I had to guess you were feeding off of the demons' power. That's how you were able to track him. Not many demons are capable of getting into someone's mind without any type of a connection. I believe an archdemon is after you."
"What the hell does an archdemon want with me?"
"Jade you know why. He wants you for your power. No one knows what you're fully capable of but so far what you can do is extraordinary. You were able to beat him at his own game. If he can't have you on his side, then you're a threat to him."
"What am I?" I whisper looking into his eyes. He cups my cheek in his hand and I lean into his palm.
"I don't know but we'll figure it out, together. It'll be just like old times." His words make me move away from him. He still doesn't understand. Everything we had was based on a lie and it's over. For good. "You may not be tired but your body needs rest. Get some sleep." I nod in agreement and head to the room Ash is sleeping in. As quietly as I can I close the door behind me and unzip my boots. Ash scoots over to make room for me in the bed. I tuck my head under his chin and he tosses his arm over me.
"I'm glad you came back." He says softly and for the first time in a long time, I sleep.

This chapter was uneventful but I wanted to have a little cool down from the bit of action and drama in the last few chapters. Please vote, comment and share.
