Chapter 6
"We get to ride in a limo?" Dean says happily. "Sweet. I like this job more and more by the second."
"I'm glad to hear that since you'll be protecting my ass for the next two weeks." We all pile into the car after Deyvon slides in. Dean immediately starts drooling over the interior and pressing buttons. Boys and their toys. As we merge onto the freeway the hairs on the back of my head stand on end. I look out the window to observe the surrounding cars.
"Abby put a shield on the car."
"Is their someone following us?" She asks as she begins working her sorcery. Blue sparks begin coming out of her hands and surrounding the car.
"Just being extra cautious. You can never be too safe." I say continuing to eye our surroundings. It has to be a random demon nearby. There's no possible way anyone could know we are here.
"Don't be so paranoid. There's no way someone is tailing us. Your plan is bulletproof." Abby reassures me.
"I know. I just had a feeling that something might be out there. I'm sure it's nothing. We should be at the hotel in half an hour." I lean back and watch the buildings as they go by. These next couple weeks are going to be really interesting. Protecting the prince when we know that someone is after him and making sure Zach doesn't get himself killed. He may have done well helping with the Nosferatu but if we run into a pack of demons that's a whole other situation.
After sitting in a ton of traffic the driver finally pulls into the private parking lot of the hotel. A young gentleman opens the car door for us.
"What room would you like me to take your bags to." He asks after closing the door behind me.
"Penthouse suite, we'll be up as soon as we check in."
"You must be Mrs. Davenport. We are delighted to have you staying with us. If there's anything you need feel free to ask. I'd love to show you around our beautiful city if you have the time."
"Thanks for the offer, sweetheart. I'll be sure to keep it in mind." I wink at the handsome man making him grin even wider.
"Poor guy thinks he's actually got a chance with you," Dean says laughing to himself as we enter the building.
"He would if I didn't have a job to do. A man with dark hair and light eyes is my weakness. I bet his body was to die for too."
"He was beautiful," Abby says sighing softly.
"Hello, dark hair and light blue eyes standing right here," Dean says pointing at himself.
"True." I laugh. "But I said a man and you're still just a boy."
"Ouch." Deyvon manages to say through his laughter.
"If you gave me a night I'd show you-."
"Not going to happen," I say smiling sweetly at Dean.
"I can help who's next." The young women behind the desk says perkily.
"Jade Davenport checking in."
"Can I see your I.D. please?"
"Of course. Here you go." I place the plastic card in her outstretched hand.
"Is everyone in your party here."
"Yes."
"Alright, then you're all set. Here are two room keys. To get to the penthouse take an elevator to the top floor and then there is a private elevator to your suit. You'll have to swipe the room key to access the elevator. If you have any questions or need anything feel free to ask. Their's someone at the front desk at all times. Enjoy your stay."
"Thank you." The receptionist gives me a smile as she hands back my I.D. and gives me the room keys. "Here Ash." I hand him the extra room key. The elevator quickly takes us up to the suite's floor. "Abby, Ash, Dean check the suit and call out when it's clear." Ash nods and swipes the key to open the door. They enter the room and split up to check around.
"How old are you," Zach asks me.
"Seventeen." Deyvon and I say at the same time.
"From where you came from isn't it rude to ask a woman's age?"
"Yes but as you can tell I'm not living among humans anymore and where I came from it's illegal for minors to check into hotels."
"Well, it's a good thing my license says I'm nineteen. I've had that thing since I was sixteen. It comes in handy when dealing with humans but here being underage isn't an issue. This place is owned by a very well-known ghoul. He owns hotels across the world to help travel easier for creatures of the night."
"That explains why every other person working here is a ghoul or vampire."
"Good observation. The night staff mostly consists of them and the day staff usually has more humans working. The kitchen staff is always supernatural. Wouldn't want the wrong people seeing what's on the menu here."
"Smart."
"Yes, it is. Now that the lesson is over please be quiet. We need to be ready in case someone is in the suite."
"No one is going to be in there. You know that right?" Deyvon asks.
"I know. I just wanted to end that conversation." Deyvon laughs next to me.
"And here I thought we were actually having a decent conversation where you weren't being a bitch."
"Sorry to ruin it for you. Let's go. It's clear."
"How do you know?" Zach asks confused.
"I heard all three of them say clear," I say tapping one of my ears. "You could have at least heard Abby when she said it if you weren't calling me a bitch. You seem to really like that word."
"Only because I haven't found a word that suits you better."
"You have got to see the top floor. There's a huge pool plus an open bar." Dean says excitedly as he runs down the stairs.
"We aren't here on vacation, Dean," I say rubbing my temples.
"Private jet, limos, and a pint house suite. You could have fooled me." Ash says as he flops onto the couch. He leans back with his hands behind his head. I roll my eyes at both of them.
"Do I need to remind you that we are protecting the prince of the Nephilim whose life has been threatened."
"Jeez, way to be a buzz kill," Ash mumbles as he removes his hands from behind his head.
"It'll be a while until sundown. You should all get sleep to help with your jet lag."
"But mom, I'm not tired." Dean pouts. I laugh and shove him out of my way.
"You know it's a good idea."
"She's right. After we all wake up we'll need to do a little shopping. You guys will need suits and the ladies will need gowns."
"That's not going to happen. You aren't leaving the hotel unless you need to. The fewer people that know you're here the better."
"Fine, then I'll have someone drop off some options."
"That's not a good idea either."
"Well one of them is going to happen so choose which one you'd rather."
"Have someone drop off the clothes tomorrow night. One of us will go get the clothing from the person. My favorite colors are black, red, and silver. No long sleeves or anything skin tight. I need to be able to move in case I have to kick somebodies' ass."
"A girl after my own heart." Abby giggles. "I also like orange. I'm tired so I'm going to bed like Jade suggested. If anyone needs a sleeping spell let me know." The guys follow behind her grumbling softly.
The soft sounds of snoring quickly fill the air. I grab my bags from beside the door and take them to the last available room on the downstairs floor. If only this were a vacation.
This is the most time any of my team has spent outside of the school for a while. We've gone on missions before but not for this long and nothing as important as this. Most our assignments last only a night. This is a whole new experience for them but it's what we've trained all our lives for. To kill demons and protect the world. Whether it be our prince or the humans living their lives obliviously.
"It's not fair everyone had to take a nap except you," Zach says interrupting my metal babbling and training routine.
"I already told you I don't sleep." I wipe the sweat dripping down my face off with my shirt.
"Don't sleep? Wouldn't you be dead if you didn't sleep?" He joins me on the training mats in the gym.
"You've found out every nightmare creature your parents told you wasn't real is but the thought of a person not needing sleep surprises you." I block his jab and throw a few of my own.
"It surprises me that you don't need any. The only things I've heard of that don't need sleep are angels and higher demons."
"That would be correct." I block his kick and charge at him connecting my knee to his stomach then a punch to his face.
"Then you're a full angel? You don't sleep or eat. I've never seen you put any food in your mouth. I've also heard that they have a hard time with their feelings. Maybe that's why you're such a pain in everyone's ass. I try my hardest to be nice to you but there's just something about you. Maybe it's your continuous scowl or bad attitude."
"I'm glad to hear that you actually know some information. I'm Nephilim. I'm just stronger, faster, and more powerful than all other Nephilim. I rarely need sleep or food. I'm the perfect soldier in everyone's eyes." Zach drops his arms and defensive stance. He takes in deep rugged breathes.
"How is that possible?" I drop my arms and even out my breathing. Sweat is making his hair stick to his forehead and his shirt cling to his chest.
"For me to answer that I have to trust you and I don't." He nods his head and steps closer to me.
"What do I have to do to earn it? I know your trust doesn't come easily."
"You could start with training more. You have a lot of potential. I can see it." I say looking into his eyes and taking a step closer to him without thinking.
"You know what you said about me was true. I do use my niceness to cover up how I really feel but you do the same thing too. Only with a different cover-up. What is it that you're hiding?"
"Why do you want to know so badly?"
"Because for some reason I want to know everything about you. I want you to trust me and I want for you to act like this all the time instead of using your attitude as a shield to block out the world." He tucks a strand of loose hair behind my ear.
"Let me ask you a question. How old do you think I was when I killed my first demon?"
"Probably when you came out the womb." He says smiling. I laugh softly and bite my bottom lip nervously. Talking isn't my strongest suit.
"I was twelve," I whisper looking down at his chest. "I was the top of my class. The only reason they hadn't sent me out in the field sooner was that I was in charge of watching Deyvon for so long. We always go on missions in groups. The one I was put in was graduating that year and the top of their class. All of them were going to the academy after graduating. When they found out I was going out with them on a hunt, of course, they were pissed. I was a child in their eyes and they didn't want to have to babysit me but I surprised them all. The first demon I killed had possessed a human. It was in a girl's body who was about sixteen. When it came time to kill it, I didn't hesitate. Not even a bit. I felt no remorse. They all couldn't believe the skill I possessed. I hunted with them until they graduated. What I didn't know was that the whole time I was being tested."
"For what?" I give a soft sad smile. Zach puts his hands under my chin and lifts my head up gently.
"Maybe some other time. For now, that's all I can give you." I remove my head from in between his roughened hands and leave the room wondering why the hell I just told him that.
