Chapter 15

I wait at the little café with Zach where I told Cyndi to meet us. Its early in the morning and when we left everyone was asleep. No one asked about what happened when Caesar and I finally came out of my room. From the glare Constantine was shooting at Caesar I'm sure he thinks I was fucking him. Constantine should know better.

The bell to the restaurant rings and two people walk in. Usually, I'd be ecstatic to see them but today not so much. Cyndi is all bright smiles and so is Logan, her husband, and my father. When I don't return the smiles, there's fall from their face. They pull out their chairs and take a seat at the table.

"Hey sweetheart, how've you been. Is everything alright?" I swallow the lump that's starting to form in my throat. Instead of responding to her I grab Zach's right arm and place it on the table giving them a clear sight of what I want them to see. I don't trust myself to talk right now. Either I'll start crying or I'll get angry and I don't want to accidentally set this place on fire. Shock fills both of their features. I'm sure they were never expecting this to happen.

"Tell me mére, and this time don't lie, what am I?" She sits their speechless continuing to stare at Zach's wrist.

"When you were given the mark? What happened?" Cyndi asks.

"I heard a voice tell me that I needed to protect Jade and then the man who had shot Jade went up in blue flame."

"Angel fire." She states softly. Why did I even bother? I won't be getting any answers here. I get up without a word and leave. I'll figure it out on my own, somehow. I stand on the sidewalk of the empty street. I hear the bell from the restaurant ding again.

"She's only doing this to protect you."

"She could protect me without lying to me." My pére comes from beside me to stand in front of me. I meet the same kind hazel eyes as Ash. As an alpha wolf, he's tall and very muscled. Even though his hair is short it still manages to have curls here and there.

"She doesn't think she's lying. After she told you I asked her why she told you and she said, 'She might not be chosen yet but in time she will be, I know it."' I sniff to clear my stuffy nose but I don't dare let a single tear fall. I'm never going to cry again. "She loves you and everything she does is to keep you, your brothers and sister, and the school safe." I nod my head in understanding. What's done is done. I give my pére a hug and inside the little café, I can see Cydni talking to Zach staring at him as if he were an angel.

I drive us back to the house quickly and order Zach to get some sleep. He tries talking to me but I'm not ready to talk yet. I grab my trench coat which was placed back in the closet. In the back of the jacket is a hole left from the arrow. On the kitchen table, I leave a note that says one word, hunting.

I don't know where the hell I'm going but I need to get away. With my swords strapped firmly to my hips, I head to the garage and grab the keys to my bike. I speed out of the garage. I wind down the empty dark streets getting further and further from the house. Eventually, I ride into a city but since it's late there and only a few people are out.

So much for hunting. This place is like a dead zone.

The wind whips around the tendrils of hair that I didn't get into my ponytail. I inhale deep breathes of fresh air. Now that I'm far away I already feel better. Being around Zach reminds me of what a freak I am and unlucky for me, Cyndi didn't tell me anything to dispute that.

In the end, it's my own damn fault. I knew she was lying but decided to believe her anyway. A small part of me thought that if I believed hard enough maybe it'd be true. This is why I don't trust people. Or let anyone get close to me. It never ends well for me.

From my peripheral vision, I see something flash by. No, not something, someone. I take a left turn down the street I saw it disappear down. I wrinkle my nose when I get a whiff of its scent. Vampire, why is it always vampires.

The street dead-ends into an alley and at the end of it I see the vampire. She's gorgeous, for a blood-sucking monster. Long blonde hair silhouettes her pale face. Beady red eyes blaze back at me and she has her canines extended. They glint in the moonlight.

My question is why is she just standing there? What is she planning?

Then suddenly, my motorcycle is flipping and I'm thrown across the paved street until a generous wall helps me come to a stop. I groan and shake my head that I just smacked against the wall. Just when my headache was beginning to go away.

"That was easy." The vampire says. I look behind me to see my poor baby smashed to oblivion. They're going to pay for that.

"That was a dick move!" I yell as I get up and dust off my coat. At this point, I need to invest in a new one. "If you wanted to talk to me all you had to do was ask. Not destroy my poor bike." I say gesturing at what's left of it. From behind me a wolf and a demon emerge. The demon is lower level. The wolf too. Looks like all this Raiden dude can afford is the newbies.

This is exactly what I needed. To let off some steam. Thank you for answering my prayer whoever's up there. I tilt my head up to the sky and a drop of water lands on my cheek. Even better, I love a good fight in the rain.

"What's a pretty little thing like you doing out so late?" She asks walking toward me.

"What you should really be asking is why isn't she dead or at least broken. No human could survive that without a scratch." The wolf asks. Human? I must be getting good at cloaking myself. I mentally pat myself on the back.

"I'm just lucky." I smile. They all continue walking toward me to cage me in.

"No one's that lucky sweetheart." That wolf may be young but he's smart.

"She isn't human." The demon says.

"Aw, don't ruin the surprise." I pout.

"Then what is she? Nephilim? I can smell the stench of angel blood on her." She really thinks I'm the one who smells? She smells like death and decaying flesh. Not a good combo. If she was a good little vampy like Dean and Constantine she'd smell like pastries instead and that'd be a lot more pleasant.

"You need to smell yourself some time because trust me, you smell a lot worst."

"Shut your mouth stupid bitch. Do you even know what I am?" She sneers.

"Of course I do. Even if I was human it'd be easy to figure out what has fangs and evil red eyes with pale skin to match. You know what else I know? Is how to kill you." I grab a dagger from my boot and throw it at her heart. Her dead body drops to the ground. That was a great shot. I turn to the two guys and see the wolfs eyes widen with shock. "Don't be so surprised sweetheart. After all, I'm not human." I grin and unsheathe my blades. The wolf growls and shifts into his wolf form. I guess he's not as new as I thought. He lets out a howl that I'm guessing is for backup. Wonderful, the more the merrier.

I look to my left and see the demon has disappeared. Coward. I'll find his weak ass later. I run toward the wolf and take advantage of the wet ground by sliding under him and slicing open his stomach. Great, now I smell like dog guts. It may have been messy but it was effective. I hear the approaching footsteps of a group of people coming my way. Four of them to be precise.

They turn the corner and I distinguish what each of them is. One sorcerer, two more wolves, and oh shit. Is that a lord vampire? Where the fuck did they find him? Well, here goes nothing. I charge and get one of the wolfs that was leading the group but before I get any further the vampire shoves me sending me into yet another wall. That's going to hurt for a while.

I know I'm a bad ass fighter and I act like I can do anything but a fucking lord vampire is no joke. If it was one on one even with him being stronger I'd eventually take him down but with two others to take care of this just got a lot more difficult. Challenge accepted.

The wolf has shifted into his form and is charging toward me. His thick coat of fur is a dark brown that looks matted and filthy. I want to give the guy a bath.

From my laying position on the ground, I grab a dagger from my shoe and throw it between his eyes. His body hits the ground with a thud and shifts back to human. Two down two more to go.

I pick up my sword that I set down to get my dagger and get up but I'm too slow. The vampire is in front of me right as I'm about to fully stand on my feet. He wraps a hand around my throat lifting me of the group and smashes me against the wall. I hear a crack as my head smacks against the wall once again. I swear if my head gets smacked against a wall one more time tonight someone's going to have a long and painful death. I swing my knee as hard as I can into his crotch. No matter what species they are the crotch is always a good spot to go. His grip on my neck loosens and that's all I need.

I smash my head as hard as I can against him and send him stumbling back. My feet land on the wet concrete silently. I swing my leg up and connect it to the side of his face. I hear the satisfying crack of his skull. It's a much better sound when it's coming from someone else's body.

From behind me, I hear the whoosh of a blade flying toward me. Then I feel it pierce my side. I grit my teeth together and yank the small blade out.

"You piece of shit." Now I have another hole in my coat. I wonder how much one of these costs. This one I got for free. He was dead so he didn't need it anymore.

I throw the blade back at him but my aim gets thrown off as I get tackled to the ground. In order to get the dagger out my back I had to drop my blade and now I just dropped my other one. Great! Rule number one, never lose your weapon. Technically it's not lost but if it's not in my hand it's no use in a fight.

Throwing my elbow back as hard as possible I make contact with his head. I manage to roll on to my back but he's still on top of me.

"You bitch!" He yells as he clutches his eye. My elbow did some good damage. He takes his hands away and I notice his hands have ice crystals on them. That's not good. Raindrops cool my skin as they make contact with my warm flesh but the rain doesn't touch him. Before it can it turns to ice. Very not good.

He has the ability to freeze whatever he touches. A rare gift and powerful. If he touches me he can freeze one of my limbs off and I'm not in the mood for that. I can see my sword on the ground a couple inches away from my fingertips.

Come on, come on. I reach but it's just barely out of my reach. Come here! I yell at the stupid thing and then I feel the cool butt of the sword in my hand. No time to think about what just happened. I need to move, fast. His fists come down at my head but I move last second and it smashes into the concrete. I bring up my blade and slice his throat. He gurgles as blood spills from his throat and mouth. I can already see his flesh knitting together.

Shoving him off I get up and search for my other sword.

"Burn her." The vampire orders and I turn to the sorcerer. Thin red flames swirl around him. I thrust my blade into the vampires' heart silencing him. That wasn't as much of a pain in the ass as I thought.

"That's a bad idea," I warn but he doesn't listen. The fire surrounds me without burning my skin. Instead, it caresses me. I hold up my hand palm facing the sky and direct the flames to it. "I told you it was a bad idea." I smirk and thrust my hand out shooting the flames at him. They engulf his body. While he's distracted I charge toward him and snap his neck. His lifeless body falls to the ground.

"It's you." I hear someone whisper behind me.

"Look who decided to come back." I walk toward the demon who fled earlier. At least now I don't have to hunt him down. I scoop up my sword as I walk to him and close the distance between us. Instead of attacking, he kneels in front of me.

"My queen." Not a lot of things surprise me but that was on the list of things I never expected to hear.

"Your what?" I ask stupidly.

"My queen. You're are the one our master is looking for. You will release the demons from hell and we will finally roam free. You will lead demonkind to greatness as well as all those who side with you. You're our Desdemona." As he speaks he looks down but once he finishes he looks up at me with praise. Desdemona, where have I heard that name? From my vision. That can't be right. I'd never side with demons let alone lead them. "The one born of the light and the dark. A fire bearer with pitch black hair and eyes of blue. They're coming for you. Raiden will not rest until he has you. Nowhere you go is safe."

"If I were you, I'd worry about yourself." I raise my blades and cross them as I place them on either side of his head. Then I cut his head off. His blood sprays across my face and the front of my coat. I sheath my blades and make the journey back to the house.

That demon doesn't know what he's talking about. He's confusing me with someone else. Raiden may be after me but he's not going to put me or anyone else in charge. He'll free the demons and run the world. Not give that power to someone else.

That's not what you saw in your vision, a voice whispers in my head. You're lying to yourself. Your vision showed you the truth. Raiden talking to a girl in a blood red dress. Her name was Desdemona and he gave her everything. The whole world for her to rule and she called him-. No. No, it's not me.

I didn't notice I started running until my pace slows as I come to the front door of the house. The door bangs against the wall as I shove it open.

"Where the hell were you? We were worried about you." Zach yells at me when I enter. He was waiting by the door. I walk past him without saying a word. The rest of the group comes rushing to the door. "What happened? Are you bleeding?" I drop my trench coat and blades as I continue walking. Everyone stares at me waiting for an answer but I'm afraid to even open my mouth. Who knows what will come pouring out.

"It's not her blood." Constantine informs Zach. At some point on the way to my room I take my shoes off. I go to the bathroom and start the shower. Not bothering to take the rest of my clothes off I step inside and sit down under the cascading water. I bring my knees up to my body and clutch them tightly to my chest.

The door to the shower opens but I don't check to see who it is. An arm wraps around my shoulder. I breathe in and recognize who it is. I rest my head on his shoulder and we sit in silence.

"Do you want to talk?" Ash asks softly but I weakly shake my head to decline and we go back to sitting in silence. As I sit under the spray of the shower I ask myself again, what am I? And add a new question. Who am I?
